The aim of this thesis is to investigate attitudes to functional foods (here defined as foods with health claims) among Swedish consumers and health-care professionals. The aim is also to survey demographics and health interests associated with the consumption of functional foods among Swedish consumers. Finally, the aim is to investigate health-care professionals knowledge of and willingness to recommend functional foods to patients.. Examples of functional foods used in the studies are probiotic fruit-drinks, probiotic milk-products, cholesterol-lowering spreads and fibre-rich bread with omega-3 fatty acids. Ten focus groups of consumers and three of health-care professionals were conducted. Two questionnaires were also used, one for consumers aged 17-75 years (n=2000) and one for health-care professionals (dieticians, n=100; registered nurses, n=200; physicians, n=200). Almost half of the consumers (48%) and exactly half (50%) of the health-care professionals responded.. The consumers ...

Most babies are positioned head down in the last four weeks in the womb, but if your baby is breech, and you are past your 36th week of pregnancy, your health-care professional may try to turn the baby around so its head is down near the birth canal. A technique called version is used to gently roll the baby around so the head is in the best position for labour and delivery. Your health-care professional will place his or her hands on your abdomen, then push or lift. You may be given a medication to relax the uterus and make the version procedure easier. During the procedure, your babys heart rate will be monitored and ultrasound may be used to check the babys position. Very rarely, version may cause problems with the babys heart rate or lead to early labour. Your health-care professional will be ready to deliver your baby if necessary, vaginally or by C-section. Sometimes, the baby will move back into breech position. If you believe your baby has switched positions again, discuss this at ...

TORONTO - For all the advancements in medical technology, Canada is mired in ancient times when it comes to simple data sharing among health-care professionals, the president of the Canadian Medical Association said Tuesday.. Establishing electronic medical records is the one of the best things Canada could do to improve its health-care system, Dr. John Haggie told a Toronto audience at The Economic Club of Canadas annual health care outlook panel.. Our current technology with health records is no different from the scrolls that Hippocrates used, said Haggie. Technology exists out there and its not being made relevant to the people who see patients.. Haggie was backed up by Dr. Robert Bell, president and CEO of the University Health Network, which includes three hospitals in downtown Toronto.. Reforming our primary-care system - the front-line family doctors, nurses and other health-care professionals who are the first point of contact with patients - would be a huge step in the right ...

It is well established that pharmacotherapy is fundamental to disease and symptom management. Adherence to medication regimens is therefore essential for improved patient health outcomes. In reality, however, many patients experience difficulty with medication taking resulting in suboptimal adherence. Given the consequences of this pervasive problem, non-adherence is increasingly recognized as one of the leading challenges that professionals face in contemporary health care. As health-care professionals, nurses have an important role in combating this problem. This paper therefore examines the literature surrounding medication adherence for the purposes of enhancing professional knowledge and practice in this area. Specifically, the impact of poor adherence from the patients, health-care professional and health-care system perspective is detailed to highlight the significance of this issue. The underlying philosophical attributes of adherence and the interchangeable concepts of compliance and ...

We report the risk of covid-19 in nearly 250 000 household members of healthcare workers. Previous evidence on the risk of covid-19 to household members of healthcare workers is sparse,15 despite evidence that their safety is of major importance to healthcare workers.14 We show that the risk of hospital admission with covid-19 was nearly twofold higher in household members of patient facing compared with non-patient facing healthcare workers. Therefore, the susceptibility of household members, as well as healthcare workers themselves, needs to be considered when assessing occupational risk.. Several studies have reported an increased risk of covid-19 infection and high prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in healthcare workers, especially in front line workers.2515161718 However, many of these reports were small, single centre, and cross sectional in nature and used methods highly susceptible to bias or restricted their populations to physicians and nurses.251920 In a large healthcare worker population ...

While these results may reflect causal associations, other possible explanations include confounding by factors possibly related to both STI acquisition and genitourinary condition risk such as recognized STI-risk factors/correlates, and other factors not typically considered in relation to STIs (e.g., general health-related behaviors or markers of such behaviors). Very few of these factors have been investigated in older populations in which ...

There are often situations in which patients feel they are being treated unlawfully by the clinics personnel, and even in a case with private healthcare providers. Incidents of unjust patient treatment have recently increased in the UK, which resulted into numerous legal appeals. Solicitors in Manchester report they have received an unprecedented number of advice requests concerned with discrimination in healthcare organizations in the last three months.. As long as you experience unfair service attitude from a healthcare provider based on the fact of who you are, you are likely to be discriminated and have every right to directly sue either the healthcare worker engaged, or the institution itself.. Discrimination issues are regulated by the Equality Act 2010: all prejudiced actions that contradict the Act are defined as unlawful. Prior to filing a lawsuit, you are to ensure there has actually been a discriminative assault. Given the case does not match the criteria of a discrimination act, you ...

We are again disappointed and frankly disgusted to see the leader of the medical center endorsing an inherently unhealthy, risky lifestyle. We remind you that this is offensive to members of the BIDMC who hold to moral principles and traditional values. But more to the point for a healthcare institution, is the fact that homosexual behavior involves well recognized higher risks of STDs, HIV and AIDS, anal cancer, hepatitis, parasitic intestinal infections, and psychiatric disorders. Life expectancy is significantly decreased as a result of HIV/AIDS, complications from the other health problems, and suicide. This alone should make it reprehensible to the medical community, regardless of your personal feelings for putting this on the politically correct list for inclusion and respect. This action again jeopardizes the credibility of BIDMC as a healthcare institution and dishonors a large proportion of its community who continue to hold to the conviction that homosexuality is immoral, ungodly, ...

A new study finds that healthcare workers in the United States are struggling with a suite of mental-health challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found that healthcare workers are at greater risk than the general public of experiencing health problems such as depression.. One striking finding is that, on average, healthcare professionals reported enough symptoms of depression to be diagnosed with clinical depression.. Our goal was to better understand the impact that COVID-19 was having on the mental well-being of healthcare workers, says Ann Pearman, corresponding author of the study and a senior research scientist in the School of Psychology at Georgia Institute of Technology.. What we learned suggests that anyone who identifies as a healthcare professional-whether its a physician or a support worker in a hospital-is at risk for mental-health problems that could be devastating if left untreated, says Shevaun Neupert, a professor of psychology at North Carolina State ...

The FDA has obtained preliminary results from the SEAS trial. The trial tested whether lowering LDL-cholesterol with Vytorin would reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems in people with narrowing of the aorta, the bodys largest artery. The five-year trial did not show a reduced cardiovascular risk. But, according to the FDA, a larger percentage of patients treated with Vytorin were diagnosed with and died from all types of cancer combined, when compared to treatment with a placebo. The FDA says patients can continue to take the drug. But the agency urged health-care professionals to monitor their patients for possible side effects and report them to the agency. While one recent clinical trial indicated higher rates of cancer for patients taking the drug, the FDA said two studies currently under way have shown no increased risk, according to an Associated Press report.. The FDA said it expects to receive a final study from the SEAS trial in about three months. It will then take an estimated ...

This report summarizes recommendations of the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) concerning influenza vaccination of health-care personnel (HCP) in the United States. These recommendations apply to HCP in acute care hospitals, nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, physicians offices, urgent care centers, and outpatient clinics, and to persons who provide home health care and emergency medical services. The recommendations are targeted at health-care facility administrators, infection-control professionals, and occupational health professionals responsible for influenza vaccination programs and influenza infection-control programs in their institutions. HICPAC and ACIP recommend that all HCP be vaccinated annually against influenza. Facilities that employ HCP are strongly encouraged to provide vaccine to their staff by using evidence-based approaches that maximize vaccination rates- p. 1 ...
Background. Burnout is a psychological reaction triggered by interaction between personal characteristics and stress factors. Reorganizations and downsizing with increased workload imply stress for health-care professionals. This is a study of burnout in nurses during a period with two comprehensive reorganizations. Methods. In this quasi-experimental retrospective cohort study, burnout was assessed in nurses with long work experience in three surveys during a 30 months period with two comprehensive reorganizations and downsizing of a hospital unit with mostly seriously ill patients with cancer. Burnout was measured with Bergen Burnout Indicator (BBI) at each survey, and Sense of Coherence (SOC) with Antonovskys questionnaire at the last survey. Results. One man and 45 women aged 30 to 65 years were invited to the surveys. There was a significant increase in burnout during the study period, the mean increase in BBI-score was 12.5 pr year (p , 0.001). The proportion of satisfied nurses at the ...
As we approach the end of October many of us are reminded about seasonal influenza. There are many ways to avoid the flu and prevent its spread including covering your cough, frequent hand washing, staying home from school or work when sick, and getting the flu vaccine. Getting a flu shot not only reduces a persons chance of catching the flu, it also reduces the risk of spreading the flu to others. In addition, flu vaccination often decreases the severity of the flu if you do get sick resulting in less time spent home from work or school.. A recent CDC report reveals that 77.3 percent of surveyed healthcare personnel reported receiving the flu vaccine during the 2014-2015 flu season (up slightly from 75.2 percent in the 2013-2014 season). Many hospitals and health systems now require healthcare personnel (e.g., nurses, physicians) to get a seasonal flu vaccine. These policies are a way to increase healthcare personnel vaccination rates as evidenced by the same CDC survey showing that flu ...
The outbreak of COVID-19 initiated in China, Hubei, Wuhan, and rapidly spread across the rest of the country in a mere period of 30 days.7 The major transmission route of COVID-19 is transmission via respiratory droplets and through close contact as well as the potential of spreading via aerosol transmission.8 Implementations of infection prevention and control can effectively limit the transmission of the virus and is of utmost importance to the personal safety of healthcare personnel.9 However, as of February 24, 2020, the NHCPRC reported at the WHO-China Joint Expert Inspection Team Press Conference that there were 3387 confirmed cases of healthcare personnel infected with COVID-19. This was analysed by the director of the National Hospital Infection Management and Quality Control Center and attributed to the poor understanding of the disease and limited self-protection awareness of healthcare personnel during the onset of the outbreak.10 Following the outbreak of COVID-19, the NHCPRC ...

Updated: May, 2011. Investigation of cases of HIV infection in healthcare personnel without identified risk factors is coordinated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health department HIV surveillance staff. These investigations have been conducted since early in the AIDS epidemic, but it was not until 1991 that a standardized investigation protocol was developed and implemented by CDC. Since then, healthcare personnel with HIV who are reported without any known risk for HIV infection are to be investigated by state and local health departments using this protocol, as Cases of Public Health Importance (COPHI). Because of the voluntary nature of the reporting system, there is likely underreporting of cases, and the relatively low numbers of documented and possible cases may not reflect the true numbers of cases in the U.S. Documented cases of occupationally acquired HIV are those in which HIV seroconversion is temporally related to an exposure to an HIV-positive ...
Bhutan Table of Contents Bhutans health-care development accelerated in the early 1960s with the establishment of the Department of Public Health and the opening of new hospitals and dispensaries throughout the country. By the early 1990s, health care was provided through some twentynine general hospitals (including five leprosy hospitals, three army hospitals, and one mobile hospital), forty-six dispensaries, sixty-seven basic health units, four indigenous-medicine dispensaries, and fifteen malaria eradication centers. The major hospitals were in Thimphu, Geylegphug, and Tashigang. Hospital beds in 1988 totaled 932. There was a severe shortage of health-care personnel with official statistics reporting only 142 physicians and 678 paramedics, about one health-care professional for every 2,000 people, or only one physician for almost 10,000 people. Training for health-care assistants, nurses aides, midwives, and primary health-care workers was provided at Thimphu General Hospitals Health ...
Originally published in September 2003). Question: What are the correct procedures following an exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials?. Answer: Answer: An exposure can be defined as a percutaneous injury (e.g., needlestick or cut with a sharp object) or contact of mucous membrane or non-intact skin (e.g., exposed skin that is chapped, abraded, or afflicted with dermatitis) with blood, saliva, tissue, or other body fluids that are potentially infectious. Exposure incidents might place dental health-care personnel at risk for hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, and therefore should be evaluated immediately following treatment of the exposure site by a qualified health-care professional. The following steps are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). The CDC provides an HIV PEP treatment hot line if questions about treatment or advice are needed. Call ...
In an era of an increasingly ageing society, part of healthcare for older adults can be provided in patients homes, and the need for home health care services (HHCSs) is increasing. This study sought to determine whether a gap exists between the views of community health professionals and the caregivers of disabled older adults towards HHCSs in Beijing, China. A cross-sectional study with two comparative questionnaire surveys was conducted in Beijing, China. One survey was administered to the caregivers of disabled older adults, and the other was administered to health professionals in community health service institutions (CHSIs). T-tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to explore potential differences between the views of caregivers and community health professionals towards HHCSs. We received 370 valid questionnaires from caregivers and 224 questionnaires from health professionals. Of the 370 caregivers, 314 (84.9%) were willing to apply for HHCSs for the older adults, but only 20.5% (N =

Parents are also encouraged to take pictures and to keep the baby with them for a while in their room. In some cases, there are burial and memorial service issues to be handled.
