The Nursing Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS) has been conducted in schools in 39 countries and the Gaza Strip/West Bank (identified as sites for the remainder of this paper). In half the sites, over 20% of the students currently smoked cigarettes, with males having higher rates than females in 22 sites. Over 60% of students reported having been exposed to secondhand smoke in public places in 23 of 39 sites. The majority of students recognized that they are role models in society, believed they should receive training on counseling patients to quit using tobacco, but few reported receiving any formal training. Tobacco control efforts must discourage tobacco use among health professionals, promote smoke free workplaces, and implement programs that train health professionals in effective cessation-counseling techniques ...

In the 2015−16 application cycle, White applicants represented the largest group. Whites accounted for twice as many applicants as Asians, the next larg-est group.8 American Indian/Alaska Native applicants and enrollees have nearly doubled when viewed in combination with other groups. During the last five years, more than 50% of White applicants ultimately enrolled in dental school.9 The upward trend contin-ued in 2016 for Whites, Asians, and Hispanic or Latino accepted applicants. In 2016, Asian applicants had a dental school enrollment rate of 49.8%, and the Hispanic or Latino applicants had an enrollment rate of 50.7%, nearly equaling the 54.5% enrollment rate of accepted White applicants. However, the number of Latino applicants (1,098) was significantly lower than White applicants (5,752). (See Table 1.). The proposed national satisfaction poll would be a costly and pointless exercise, says Lee Harvey The Higher Education Funding Council for Englands proposed national student survey is a misleading, intrusive, expensive and ultimately worthless venture. The original proposal was to survey graduates about their experience, but Hefce now proposes to survey students halfway through their final year. This is an unacceptable intrusion into university life that will damage existing improvement processes based on internal explorations of student satisfaction. Many universities conduct institution-wide surveys of the student experience. These are designed to address issues of concern to students and are linked to action cycles. The proposed survey in January 2005, which will neither contribute to the improvement action process nor provide any useful information, will clash with these important internal processes, also scheduled for the spring term. The result will be low response rates on one or ...

T his months newsletter is focused on interprofessional collaboration-a topic that is timely not only because of the work currently being done by the many valuable institutional and organizational partnerships within and without the osteopathic medical education (OME) community, but also because of the shift in both health care and medical and health professions education toward more interprofessional collaborative models. There is growing evidencei that when health care professionals work together to care for patients, patients receive better quality care and better health outcomes. However, generating a framework that essentially remodels the health care system is far more complicated than simply understanding and supporting the concept. While evolving changes in payment models from fee-for-service to prospective payment system of health care delivery provide an environment for team-based care, in order for national interprofessional collaborative practice to become a reality, committed ...
Fields & Barry (2016) go on to clarify this bigger picture: Delivering primary care within a value-based model involves much more than changing contracts and compensation. It requires a proactive clinical focus, in which patients at high risk for disease progression are identified for early intervention, patient education services are expanded, care is coordinated across sites and specialties, and redundant, non-evidence-based treatments are eliminated-all with three key objectives: making patients healthier, providing high-quality care, and reducing the total cost of care. (p. 2). More than a decade ago, the Institute of Medicine reported the need for ongoing education and training of health professionals to meet the changing needs of healthcare consumers. The report, A Bridge to Quality from the 2003 Health Professions Education Summit, called for innovative approaches in education to equip health professionals with new skills and roles in order to best respond to the shifting needs of ...

Multidisciplinary fragmentation contributes to myriad medical errors and as many as 98,000 patient deaths per year. The Institute of Medicine has proposed steps to improve healthcare delivery, including providing more opportunities for interdisciplinary training. The authors describe the interprofessional education (IPE) program at Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) in Pomona, California. In 2007, 9 colleges at WesternU-including the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-undertook an IPE initiative that resulted in creation of a 3-phase program. Part of the IPE development process involved identifying core competencies that were nontechnical and nonclinical and common to all healthcare professions. The IPE development and implementation process and the identified competencies were analyzed for their relationship to the tenets of osteopathic medicine and the core competencies of osteopathic medical education. Although these tenets and core competencies were not ...

Beyond simply expanding health insurance coverage, the ACA emphasizes preventive care as a strategy to both improve the health status of Americans and control costs. The law provides increased grants to health professions education institutions for the training of primary care physicians, physician assistants and dental professionals. In order to address potential shortages that might be driven by the ACA, and take full advantage of the ACAs focus on preventive care and integrated care delivery, Congress and state legislatures need to focus on expanding the health work force and supporting collaboration between health workers. Funds are necessary to expand medical education, as well as training for physician assistants, nurses and nurse practitioners, laboratory workers, pharmacists and pharmacy staff,

The case studies describe the development of successful prevention, population health, and public health programs in graduate health professions education programs, as well as in 2-year and 4-year undergraduate institutions. Authors chosen to develop case-studies worked closely with discipline-specific APTR Healthy People Curriculum Task Force organizations or the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) to complete 47 case-studies in a variety of disciplines.. Case-Based Series in Population-Oriented Prevention (C-POP) ,, The Case-Based Series in Population-Oriented Prevention (C-POP) was developed to address national objectives for prevention education in a format that recognizes the students abilities and preferences for case-based learning. This series uses small-group discussion cases that can be adapted to a ...

Health professions education has benefitted from standardized patient (SP) programs to develop and refine communication and interpersonal skills in trainees. Effective case design is essential to ensure an SP encounter successfully meets learning objectives that are focused on communication skills. Creative, well-designed case scenarios offer learners the opportunity to engage in complex patient encounters, while challenging them to address the personal and emotional contexts in which their patients are situated. Therefore, prior to considering the practical execution of the patient encounter, educators will first need a clear and structured strategy for writing, organizing, and developing cases. The authors reflect on lessons learned in developing standardized patient-based cases to train learners to communicate to patients during times of diagnostic uncertainty, and provide suggestions to develop a set of simulation cases that are both standardized and diverse. Key steps and workflow processes that
Polarized secretion of Drosophila EGFR ligand from photoreceptor neurons is controlled by ER localization of the ligand-processing machinery. The uptake of information and generic cialis available communication technologies (ICTs) in health professions education can have far-reaching consequences on assessment. SAR of potency enhancing P2-P3 groups coupled with ketoheterocyclic warheads to provide cathepsin K inhibitors have been described. The relatively high overuse injury incidence rate and the high recurrence rate for (severe) thigh muscle strains, especially during games, warrants prevention strategies.. With the administration of nifedipine (Adalat), the grade of nephrocalcinosis could be generic cialis available significantly reduced. Taken together, these results support the hypothesis that proper ...
