The astonishing improvement of high-throughput biotechnologies in recent years makes it possible to access a huge amount of genomic data. The association between genomic data and genetic disease has already been and will continue to be applied to personalized healthcare. Health information management (HIM) professionals are the ones who will handle personal genetic information and provide solid evidence to support physicians diagnoses and personalized treatment strategies, and therefore they will need to have the knowledge and skills to process genomic data.

The incidence of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) is on the rise worldwide and Ghana continues to show an increasing trend especially for hypertension and diabetes. The NCDs surveillance system in Ghana was established through the District Health Information Management System in 2008 to detect and monitor morbidity, mortality and risk-factor trend for evidence-based public health decision making. However, it is not known if the NCDs surveillance system is effective in achieving its set objectives. We evaluated the performance and usefulness of the Eastern Regional NCDs surveillance system to identify and utilize opportunities for system improvement. We used the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for surveillance system evaluation. We interviewed stakeholders, reviewed records and data collection tools, observed processes and analyzed data on hypertension, diabetes, sickle cell and bronchial asthma from 2006 to 2010 using Epi info version 3.5.1. Between 2006 and 2010, the proportion
A National Minimum Data Set (NMDS) is a core set of data elements agreed by the National Health Information Management Group for mandatory collection and reporting at a national level. One NMDS may include data elements that are also included in another National Minimum Data Set. A NMDS is contingent upon a national agreement to collect uniform data and to supply it as part of the national collection, but does not preclude agencies and service providers from collecting additional data to meet their own specific needs. The National Health Data Dictionary contains definitions of data elements that are included in NMDS collections in the health sector, including data elements used to derive some of the performance indicators required under Australian Health Care Agreements (bilateral agreements between the Commonwealth and State/Territory governments about funding and delivery of health services). The following pages contain the Admitted patient care NMDS and its associated data elements and data ...

Few investigators have used robust analytic methods to assess risk factors and outcomes for surgical site infections (SSIs) after craniotomy and craniectomy (CRANI) procedures. We performed a retrospective study among patients undergoing CRANI procedures between 2006 and 2010 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) to assess the effect of an intervention (e.g., limiting Gliadel wafer use among patients with malignant brain tumors) on the trend of SSI rates, to identify independent risk factors for SSIs, and to evaluate one-year postoperative patient outcomes associated with these SSIs. We abstracted demographic data and clinical data from medical records or from the UIHCs Health information Management System. We identified 104 patients with SSIs and selected 312 controls. Of SSIs, 88% were deep incisional or organ space infections, 70% were identified after patients were discharged from their initial hospitalizations, 32% were caused by Staphylococcus aureus alone or in combination with

The subject of Unique Patient Identifiers pops up with clockwork regularity in the healthcare discourse. A recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) titled Has the Time Come for a Unique Patient Identifier for the U.S.? points out that HIPAA initially mandated patient identifiers. Reason prevailed and the requirement was abandoned. The article goes on to list, correctly, all the issues related to duplicates and split records and their dire consequence from financial costs to potential loss of life. Just a few short years ago the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) issued a petition calling for unique patient identifiers citing much of the same issues and making a proposal for a voluntary solution. That effort also failed to get much traction either. While the problems cited are very real, it is not at all clear how a unique identifier would solve the problem, in spite of the very bold claims.. apply different design patterns and techniques to different types of computer networks. This is the second course in the Cisco Networking Basics Specialization. The Specialization will focus on security in the network environment, with the goal of identifying and implementing solutions to improve the security of computer networks.. Note: This is a focused course with a lot of emphasis on the specific of each type of attack and protection techniques. While every solution is important, applying one method over another is not always easy. In this course, we will look at different methods to protect different types of information, as described in the order in which they are typically implemented. While it may seem like an exercise in futility that we are focusing on attacks against computers, it is in fact an exciting opportunity to learn about new protection techniques and find out which approach is best suited to protect information at different levels of protection.. All of the lectures, quizzes, ...
New high throughput experimental techniques have turned the life sciences into a data-intensive field. Scientists are faced with new types of problems, such as managing voluminous sources of information, integrating heterogeneous data, and applying the proper analysis algorithms; all to end up with reliable conclusions. These challenges call for an infrastructure of algorithms and technologies to supply researchers with the tools and methods necessary to maximize the usefulness of the data. eScience has emerged as a promising technology to take on these challenges, and denotes integrated science carried out in highly distributed network environments, or science that makes use of large data sets and requires high performance computing resources.. In this thesis I present standards, exchange formats, algorithms, and software implementations for empowering researchers in the life sciences with the tools of eScience. The work is centered around Bioclipse - an extensible workbench developed in the ...

Low-rate denial of service (LDoS) attacks send attacking bursts intermittently to the network which can severely degrade the victim systems Quality of Service (QoS). The low-rate nature of such attacks complicates attack detection. LDoS attacks repeatedly trigger the congestion control mechanism, which can make TCP traffic extremely unstable. This paper investigates the network traffic characteristics, in which variance and entropy are used to evaluate the TCP traffics characteristics, and the ratio of UDP traffic to TCP traffic (UTR) is also analyzed. Thus, a detection method combining two-step cluster analysis and UTR analysis is proposed. Through two-step cluster analysis which is one of the machine learning algorithms, network traffic is divided into multiple clusters and then clusters subjected to LDoS attacks are determined using UTR analysis. NS2 simulation platform and test-bed network environment aim to evaluate the detection approachs performance. To better assess the effectiveness of the
To successfully realize the ubiquitous network environment including home automation or industrial control systems, it is important to be able to resist a jamming attack. This has recently been considered as an extremely threatening attack because it can collapse the entire network, despite the existence of basic security protocols such as encryption and authentication. In this paper, we present a method of jamming attack tolerant routing using multiple paths based on zones. The proposed scheme divides the network into zones, and manages the candidate forward nodes of neighbor zones. After detecting an attack, detour nodes decide zones for rerouting, and detour packets destined for victim nodes through forward nodes in the decided zones. Simulation results show that our scheme increases the PDR (Packet Delivery Ratio) and decreases the delay significantly in comparison with rerouting by a general routing protocol on sensor networks, AODV (Ad hoc On Demand Distance Vector), and a conventional JAM (Jammed

In addition to increased collaboration and communication, benefits include a reduction in treatment expenses. Duplicate tests, the time involved to obtain missing health information, the cost to print, mail, scan, or fax health records, and time on the phone verifying their delivery are all eliminated. According to one study, this equates to a $17,160 annual reduction in expenses. That money can instead be used to pay for new testing and diagnosis technology for the physician office, lab, or hospital ...
