Today I am reflecting on the power of culture. More than that, I am reflecting on the power of role models as drivers of the culture in our learning climates. I am so happy to be a clinician educator in an era that promotes feeling and acknowledging that being tired and overworked is no excuse for being unprofessional. Id like to think that our culture has evolved to something more empathic than walking up to the bedside of a twelve year old with a chemically decimated esophagus and who is fighting for his life, closing the door so his mom cant hear and saying, Gutcheck! (Bah-dump-bump ...

In terms of Herzbergs Theory of Motivation, the most important extrinsic (hygiene) factor was no satisfaction with their salaries compared to nurses salaries in other private hospitals in England, in the NHS and even at their own hospitals. However, most nurses were satisfied with the other extrinsic factors (organisation and administration policies, supervision and interpersonal relations). The most important intrinsic factors (motivators), influencing nurses job satisfaction was their lack of satisfaction with promotions (including the fact that their qualifications were reportedly not considered for promotions), lack of advancement opportunities and being in deadend jobs, and lack of involvement in decision- and policy-making activities ...
We found that shifts of 12 h or more for hospital nurses are associated with more reports of burnout, job dissatisfaction, dissatisfaction with work schedule flexibility and intention to leave. Additionally, all shifts longer than 8 h appeared to be detrimental to nurses job satisfaction. Our study indicates that working overtime on a shift is associated with poor nurse outcomes independent of the total hours worked on that shift.. We found an association between shifts of 12 h or more and all three subscales of burnout: this finding is in line with previous studies.16 ,20 Nurses may prefer working only three shifts of 12 h per week,16 however it appears to be at the expense of their psychological well-being. Employers should be aware of the multiple consequences of burnout, including higher risks of medical error, decreased quality of care,3 reduced well-being, and economic loss through increased absenteeism and higher turnover rates.32. Current literature tends to report that 12 h shifts ...
AIMS: We tested a modification of Leiter and Laschingers Nursing Worklife Model by examining the impact of structural empowerment on professional work environment factors that lead to nursing job satisfaction. BACKGROUND: The original model explains how five magnet hospital practice domains described by Lake (2002) interact to influence nurses work lives by either contributing to or mitigating burnout. METHODS: A non-experimental design was used. Five hundred randomly selected nurses in Michigan were surveyed (response rate 66%, n = 332). Instruments included the Conditions for Work Effectiveness Questionnaire-II, the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, and the Index of Work Satisfaction. Path analysis was used to test the model. RESULTS: The final model fit the data well (chi2 = 96.4, d.f. = 10, NFI: 0.90, CFI: 0.43, RMSEA: 0.18), supporting both hypotheses. CONCLUSIONS: The expanded Nursing Worklife Model demonstrates the role of empowerment in creating positive practice

Background: Swedish nursing home managers, who constitute the empirical focus of this thesis, hold overall operational responsibility for the nursing homes, which includes the care of residents, direct care staff and work environment. Aged care organisations are also expected to provide person-centred care. Working towards a person-centred approach poses new demands and leads to challenges for leaders, and there is currently limited knowledge of what characterises leadership that promotes a person-centred approach. In addition, an ongoing demographic shift in the aged care workforce entails further challenges, as the proportion of professional workers is decreasing. Leading a healthy work environment is therefore important for ensuring and protecting staff health. Based on this, it is important to explore nursing home managers leadership in relation to person-centred care and the work situation of staff.. Aim: The overall aim was to explore leadership in relation to person-centred care and the ...

We can create a third path. We can decide to meet this challenge head on. It is absolutely within our capacity to do so. We could develop tests that are fast, reliable, and ubiquitous. If we screen everyone, and do so regularly, we can let most people return to a more normal life. We can reopen schools and places where people gather. If we can be assured that the people who congregate arent infectious, they can socialize.. We can build health-care facilities that do rapid screening and care for people who are infected, apart from those who are not. This will prevent transmission from one sick person to another in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. We can even commit to housing infected people apart from their healthy family members, to prevent transmission in households. ...
Infections transmitted in health-care facilities kill at least 80,000 Americans each year. One common culprit? The germ-spreading handshake. According to a study recently published in the American Journal of Infection Control, a less formal fist bump might make a safer greeting between doctors and patients. We found that the handshake transferred 10 to 20 times more bacteria than a fist bump, says David Whitworth, a biochemistry lecturer at Aberystwyth University in Wales. ...

So how can the business world piece together the intricate puzzle of the right employee for the right job? Today, not only should applicants market themselves to companies, but companies need to also market themselves towards the types of employees they want working for them. Applicants can show their personal brand through a resume, networking, and interviewing. So how does a company present itself as a desirable place to work?. First, it is important for a company to let employees be themselves. As we have discussed in many previous sections, fostering a diverse work environment is the first step to allowing individuality in the workplace. However, an individualized management approach takes it a step further. For example, allowing employees to choose their own hours or wear what they want to the workplace allows for a truly individualized work experience. While these are not globally accepted ideas, they can be extremely beneficial to fostering a happy and healthy work ...
I think the feeling that, the worst feeling that happened for me, especially over those first few months, was feeling trapped. It was this sense that, you know, always in the past whatever awful thing that happened, there was some way of escaping. I could run away, I could quit my job; there was always a way of escaping it. And the realisation that this was happening to my body and there was nothing I could do to escape it, just made me feel desperately trapped. And it was very, very important to me to be not in a physical environment where I felt trapped, so I was in one hospital room where I was in a tiny, tiny little cubicle and I was already feeling emotionally so trapped, and then I got severe claustrophobia, and I had it so badly that my family actually managed to convince them to move me to another hospital. So as long as my physical environment wasnt oppressing me too much I was okay, but as soon as I got into any kind of closed space, that feeling of being trapped just got too much. ...
