State regulations on health education have evolved over a period of time. The first portion of the regulation that was developed involved the teaching of family life education. This became effective on July 1, 1970. Next came the regulation regarding HIV/AIDS prevention education. This began as an emergency regulation on October 6, 1987 and was adopted as a final regulation on May 2, 1988. Finally, when the regulation was put forward on comprehensive health education instruction, all three sections were compiled under the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR), Title 13A. State Board of Education, Subtitle 04 Specific Subjects, Chapter 18, Programs in Comprehensive Health Education. The repealing of the separate regulations on the teaching of family life education and HIV/AIDS prevention education and compiling them under COMAR 13A.04.18 occurred on March 27, 1991 ...
Working with hundreds of security awareness programs has taught me one thing, people are key. One of the quickest ways I can determine if an awareness program is going to be successful is by asking how many people are dedicated to the awareness program. Budget is not the indicator, fancy metrics are not the indicator, people are the indicator. If you have just 30% of one persons time dedicated to your awareness program, you will fail. Could you image the results if one-third of one person is all you dedicated to your EndPoint security or Incident Response efforts? If you want to change organizational behavior (Stage 3 of the Security Awareness Maturity Model) you need at least 1.4 FTEs (Full Time Employees) dedicated to your awareness program. If you want to go beyond behavior and change culture and measure that change, you need at least 2.6 FTEs. And that is for organizations with 5,000 employees. How do we know this? Simple, we have hard data from over 1,000 security awareness professionals ...

Depression is a common disorder among adolescents. If left untreated, it can cause significant disability, illness, and even death. Teens with depression often engage in risky health behaviors, such as smoking, drug and alcohol use, unprotected sex, and unhealthy eating and exercise patterns. By reducing these health risk behaviors, depressed adolescents may be able to avoid negative health consequences and improve their physical and mental health. This study will determine the effectiveness of a health education intervention in reducing risky health behaviors in adolescents with depression.. Participants in this study will be invited to enroll during a visit to a participating primary care clinic. Participants will be randomly assigned to either partake in a health education intervention or receive standard care. Both groups will continue to receive treatment through their primary care clinic. Those participants receiving standard care will be referred to special programs as needed to reduce ...

Yup, its still Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.. In fact, I stand corrected. It is the Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.. And I have a sneaking suspicion that youve forgotten that-that to you its Cord Blood Awareness Blog Month, or International Group B Strep Awareness Month-or even Eye Injury Prevention Month-but within all those months youve forgotten about Minority Mental Healths existence.. Which is just par for the course.. But its a deadly serious issue-and maybe if we all knew a little bit more about it, wed be able to keep it in our heads just a wee bit longer.. Its hard to know where to start.. Maybe with this treasure: According to the American Psychiatric Association, one out of every three African-Americans who needs mental health care actually receives it.. And, apparently once theyve gotten it, theyre not that thrilled with what theyve got. The APA also found that, compared to the general population, African-Americans tend to ...

In developing health education programs, the content, teaching modality, and person designated to provide information all merit consideration. A common problem with health education content is that health professionals provide too much detail regarding pathophysiology and too little regarding the daily management of illnesses.. It is important to assess patient beliefs and current practices concerning a condition and to use that information as a foundation on which to build health education programs. If the health program is broadly implemented, important information from community members can be gleaned in focus groups before initiation of the program to address those areas of greatest concern for the target group. Cultural information can be well incorporated here as it relates to the area of health education. For example, if the intervention is nutrition counseling, inclusion of common foods, methods of preparation, and typical units of food measurement is necessary.. Successful intercultural ...

The FDA states that The Real Cost campaign ads will run nationwide beginning on February 11 Read More.... The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched its first public health education campaign -- The Real Cost" -- to prevent and reduce tobacco use among at-risk young people ages 12 to 17. Over 3,200 youth under the age of 18 smoke their first cigarette every day in the U.S -- and another 700 become daily smokers. FDA will use advertising on TV, radio and the Internet, as well as in print publications, movie theaters and outdoor locations to highlight the effects of smoking such as loss of control due to addiction and health effects like tooth loss and skin damage. In a similar effort, CVS Caremark has said it will stop selling tobacco products at more than 7,600 stores across the U.S.. ...

STARS: Sistas Talking About Real Solutions is a health education intervention for African-American women, ages 18-29 aimed at reducing their risk for HIV. A total of 855 subjects were recruited from three Kaiser Permanente Medical Centers. Members were randomly selected from the membership database and sent a letter via mail introducing them to the project and inviting them to participate. Letters were followed up with a phone call and potential participants were screened for eligibility. To be able to participate, participants had to be African-American, female, between the ages of 18-29, single, and have at least one act of unprotected sexual intercourse within the last 6 months. Members who were eligible and willing to participate completed a 1-hour baseline assessment survey; STD testing for Chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and HPV; a vaginal swab that was used to determine if they had unprotected sex. Ive had a few HIV tests in my time, but Ive never gotten totally used to them. My first test was when I was in 12th grade. Terrified of what I would hear, I never went back for the results. The second was a few months later. I was living abroad and was on a program that required an HIV test. When an envelope from the lab arrived almost a month later, I refused to look inside and instead handed it to my roommate. Then I held my breath as she read the word "negative." A few years after that, I got tested at a clinic which promised results in 20 minutes. On the bus ride there, I glanced out the window and saw the word "AIDS" glaring at me in huge red letters. I was convinced it was a sign--and not a good one. But like the previous results, ... ...
Regional public education campaigns in the United States to promote more appropriate use of antibiotics among outpatients are underfunded and seldom evaluated for effectiveness, concludes a study presented at the 49th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy in San Francisco on 12-15 September.. "The main problems in the US are that the programmes are not adequately funded or evaluated," said the studys lead author, Benedikt Huttner, from Geneva, Switzerland. Many operate on $100 000 (£60 000; $70 000) a year or less, which pays for little more than the salary of a programme administrator. "There is very little money left over for the interventions themselves," … ...

Traditional HIV/AIDS education campaigns have not been completely effective in curtailing new infections. One potential reason behind this is that most of the infections occur among individuals who are willing to take risks when it comes to sexual behaviour, and campaigns have failed to specifically target these people. This column describes a new HIV intervention trialled in Lesotho that used a lottery to target such individuals and incentivise safer practices. HIV incidence was reduced by more than a fifth in treatment groups over the trial period. These results, combined with practical and cost advantages, suggest that such interventions could prove invaluable in the fight against HIV.. ...
