Vietnam represents a potentially very large health care, pharmaceutical, medical equipment and device market. Identified as one of the national development priorities, the Vietnamese public health care sector has received increasing budget allocations along with incentives for investment.. Healthcare provision is via mixed public-private system, with just over 1000 public and 130 private hospitals. These are not enough to meet rising demand and the Ministry of Health has announced plans for 45 new hospitals across Vietnam to relieve overcrowding. In Ho Chi Minh City (population 9 million) there are plans for four new hospitals, two of these will be a cancer hospital and a childrens hospital totalling US$500 million. Beyond construction there is a need for equipment and training, not just for medical staff but across all disciplines for running an efficient hospital and healthcare system. Currently, around 30,000 Vietnamese travel abroad for specialist treatment at a cost of more than US$1 ...

Healthcare professionals, as their patients, are clients of the healthcare system, in that their work requires the infrastructure, supervision, equipment, and physical setting to operate efficiently and cultivate a sustainable basic healthcare [1]. How well they respond to patients needs depends on various financial, professional, political, social, and personal factors [2]. In many countries, healthcare professionals are operating under serious policy, financial, organizational, and managerial constraints, with productivity, morale, and effectiveness suffering as a result. Principles for improving the values and skills of healthcare professionals were laudable but genuinely translating these into practice remained controversial. The recent World Health Organization global strategy on human resources for health: workforce 2030 has among its major principles to uphold the personal, employment and professional rights of all healthcare workers, including safe and decent working environments and ...
Very fewprivate clinics or test providers include information about Downs syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Pataus syndrome in their marketing and information materials. In the NHS, the development of balanced and up-to-date information about the conditions has been central to the aim of ensuring women and couples make informed decisions about NIPT. Public Health England has spent a year consulting with support organisations and families of people with the conditions to help them describe, as neutrally as possible, what having a child with one of these conditions might mean.[3] Yet, in the private sector, youre lucky if they have included the web address of a Downs syndrome organisation. At the Nuffield Council, we believe its only ethical to offer NIPT within an environment that enables women and couples to make informed choices, and the provision of high quality information about the tested-for conditions is crucial to this.. 3. Washington, D.C. - Today, the Open Markets Institute released Volume II of Americas Concentration Crisis, which presents exclusive data on market concentration in the healthcare industry. This new data, sourced from IBISWorld, comes as the Senate Judiciary Committee prepares for a hearing on June 12 on the implications of vertical consolidation in healthcare.. Our national healthcare debate too often misses the role of monopoly in driving up healthcare costs, says Open Markets Policy Director Phil Longman. What this report shows is that exorbitant prices in healthcare are largely a symptom of increasingly concentrated healthcare markets and that more rigorous antitrust enforcement is essential to solving Americas healthcare crisis. This new data demonstrates how a broad range of markets in the healthcare sector, from syringe manufacturing to dialysis centers, have become increasingly monopolized over time by a handful of major players. This growing monopoly power contributes significantly ...

Downloadable! Abstract: We study the effect of product market competition on the incentives to engage in earnings manipulation and we find that they crucially depend on the level of visibility of firm real activity in the marketplace. If investors can perfectly observe real firm output and sales, then CEOs are forced to act in the marketplace in a consistent manner with the earnings they are reporting. We show in a simple model how this is too expensive in more competitive markets and therefore competition should reduce rather than increase earnings manipulation. On the contrary, if investors and analysts cannot observe firm real output in the marketplace we show how manipulating earnings might be particu

Market share is never the final determinant of market power. It is used as a screen for further investigation and/or to shift the burden of proof. So, for example, an HHI (Herfindahl Hirschman Index) greater than 1700 or 1800 is triggers anti-trust investigations by the US government in the case of mergers and acquisitions. In the case of determining significant market power in telecom regulation (LIRNEasia is quite skeptical about the value of this approach in developing countries), market shares of around 35-45 percent shift the burden on the operator to prove that it does not have market power (the ability to set and maintain prices in simple language).. But in Bangladesh 20 percent market share is the magic number. And its not a rebuttable presumption; nor a screen. You go over 20 percent, you start paying more for the critical input of spectrum. This is the gist of the Market Competition Factor, I have described elsewhere as anti-consumer. The MCF for Citycell is 0.3, while it is 1.48 ...

Utahs entrepreneurial spirit - the free market drive to innovate to fulfill peoples unmet needs - is particularly strong and visible in Utahs healthcare sector.
By G Ananthakrishnan. In the absence of a robust state-funded health infrastructure providing free care, citizens have no option but to seek out private facilities. As a result, we have a burgeoning private healthcare sector, unregulated and often exploitative A single episode of major illness is enough to eat away the life-savings of most individuals in India . In fact, there is data to suggest that such illnesses push several families below the poverty line. The World Bank reported in 2002 that irrespective of income class, one episode of hospitalisation is estimated to account for 58% of per capita annual expenditure, pushing 2.2% of the population below the poverty line. Even more disconcerting is the fact that 40% of those hospitalised had to borrow money or sell off assets. During 1986-96, the number of people who could not access healthcare because of financial reasons doubled over the baseline. This obviously suggests a greater role for the public sector in healthcare. Yet, several ...
By. Aditi Ramdorai and Cornelius Herstatt. Working Paper No. 74, TIM/TUHH. Frugal innovations, characterized by their focus on affordability and retaining key functionalities of products/services, are emerging in the healthcare sector from India- ranging from low-cost healthcare delivery by hospitals like Aravind Eye Care that provides cataract surgery to around 300,000 patients at a cost of 18 USD per patient to product innovations such as the Jaipur Foot, a low-cost prosthesis. These frugal innovations represent disruptive innovations, innovations that are typically simpler, more convenient and more affordable. Disruptive innovations create growth potential for companies while opening up access to products and services that were previously beyond peoples reach. Low-income markets or Base-of-the-Pyramid [BOP] markets present new opportunities to Multi-National Corporations [MNCs] and scholars are calling MNCs to leverage BOP markets to create disruptive innovations.. Established incumbents ...
The Health Care Choice Act would substantially improve the functioning of health care markets and, through greater breadth and intensity of competition, the delivery of health care services from medical professionals.. Broader and More Intense Competition. State health insurance markets are increasingly concentrated and less competitive, often dominated by a few large insurers. Market consolidation has been accelerated by mergers and acquisitions, as well as by rigid state government policies that have discouraged carrier participation. In the individual market, insurance companies participation varies, and many markets are dominated by fewer and fewer number of large carriers. In many cases, this consolidation has been facilitated by misguided state government policy. Likewise, in the small group market, the declines are dramatic. In Marylands highly regulated small group market, for example, between 1995 and 2004, the number of participating insurers dropped from 37 to 9; two of the largest ...

Pharmacists in Uganda assist customers with recommending antimalarial medications (Photo credit: Maddy Marasciulo-Rice, Malaria Consortium). Presumptive treatment ― the overuse of antimalarials greatly increases the chances that malaria parasite resistance will develop and spread. In the future we might have one less weapon in our arsenal against these parasites. This overuse also means that the medicine is put over. How can rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) help treat malaria?. Fortunately, rapid diagnostic tests, or RDTs, allow malaria to be diagnosed quickly, accurately, and cheaply, using only a drop of blood and a few drops of a solution. The problem is―there is no official quality control within the private healthcare sector―the pharmacists who provide the RDT to the patient have no way to choose a good RDT from the many options on the market and the wrong choice could lead to inaccurate diagnosis. Furthermore, many of the RDT sales representatives havent been trained to properly ...
