Public engagement with science describes intentional, meaningful interactions that provide opportunities for mutual learning between scientists and the public. Mutual learning refers not just to the acquisition of knowledge, but also to increased familiarity with a breadth of perspectives, frames, and worldviews. Goals for public engagement with science include civic engagement skills and empowerment, increased awareness of the cultural relevance of science, and recognition of the importance of multiple perspectives and domains of knowledge to scientific endeavors. In order to
The adrenergic hormones, norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (EPI), are critically important during embryogenesis and cardiovascular development, yet their specific mechanisms of action remain mysterious. Disruption of the dopamine β-hydroxylase (Dbh) gene results in an inability to produce NE and EPI, which leads to death in utero between embryonic days 10.5 (E10.5) and E15.5 from apparent heart failure. To determine genes differentially expressed by the loss of adrenergic hormones, Affymetrix® GeneChip microarray analysis revealed 23 genes (of the 22,000 analyzed) that are significantly altered 2-fold or greater in E10.5 Dbh-/- hearts. Of these altered genes, 31% (7 of 23) are linked to metabolic regulation. The gene encoding for NADH dehydrogenase [ubiquinone] 1 beta subcomplex subunit 2, Ndufb2, for example, is a subunit of the mitochondrial complex 1, and displayed a 2.1-fold change in Dbh-/- embryonic hearts. This led us to investigate the metabolic health of these Dbh-/- embryos. ...

A new study suggests that people who are obese with no health complications are still more likely to develop heart disease than those who are not overweight and in similar metabolic health. Previous research suggested that obese people might be protected from cardiovascular events if they didn’t have poor metabolic health, a condition sometimes referred to as metabolically healthy obesity.

BACKGROUND: Studies examining the association between dairy consumption and metabolic health have shown mixed results. This may be due, in part, to the use of different definitions of dairy, and to single types of dairy foods examined in isolation.. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to examine associations between dairy food intake and metabolic health, identify patterns of dairy food consumption and determine whether dairy dietary patterns are associated with outcomes of metabolic health, in a cross-sectional survey.. DESIGN: A 4-day food diary was used to assess food and beverage consumption, including dairy (defined as milk, cheese, yogurt, cream and butter) in free-living, healthy Irish adults aged 18-90 years (n=1500). Fasting blood samples (n=897) were collected, and anthropometric measurements taken. Differences in metabolic health markers across patterns and tertiles of dairy consumption were tested via analysis of covariance. Patterns of dairy food consumption, of different fat ...

Neuroenhancement refers to the targeted enhancement and extension of cognitive and affective abilities based on an understanding of their underlying neurobiology in healthy persons who do not have any mental illness. As such, it can be thought of as an umbrella term that encompasses pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods of improving cognitive, affective, and motor functionality, as well as the overarching ethico-legal discourse that accompanies these aims. Critically, for any agent to qualify as a neuroenhancer, it must reliably engender substantial cognitive, affective, or motor benefits beyond normal functioning in healthy individuals, whilst causing few side effects: at most at the level of commonly used comparable legal substances or activities, such as caffeine, alcohol, and sleep-deprivation. Pharmalogical neuroenhancement agents include the well-validated nootropics, such as racetam, vinpocetine, and phosphatidylserine, as well as other drugs used for treating patients suffering ...

It is also known that the oral administration of L-theanine to rats results in a decrease of serotonin and an increase of catecholamine in the brain. L-Theanine has been confirmed to be safe in animal experiments. We found that the oral intake of L-theanine caused a feeling of relaxation among the human volunteers examined. These observations led us to conduct experiments on the effects of the administration of L-theanine on brain waves. Eight female university students were selected as volunteers. Four of them were ranked as Grade I (the highest anxiety) and the remaining four as Grade V (lowest anxiety) in an investigation done by the manifest anxiety scale ...
