A previous Croakey post put a strong case that mandatory bicycle helmet laws are having a detrimental effect on public health.. Now a leading public health and cycling advocate, Clinical Associate Professor Chris Rissel from the University of Sydney, has weighed in to the debate - suggesting that the laws are failed public policy.. He writes:. I agree with Sue Abbott that the legislation for mandatory bike helmets is failed public policy.. There is little evidence to support the view that there was a drop in head injuries as a result of the helmet legislation. Any observation of the head injury rate since 1950 shows that this declining in New South Wales BEFORE the introduction of mandatory helmet legislation, and certainly before the self-reported level of helmet use increased. This is consistent with the general decline in motor vehicle related fatalities and morbidity in NSW from 1950 to the present, but in particular between 1980 and 1990.. It is most likely that a series of changes in ...
Objective Helmet use in Dutch recreational skiers and snowboarders (DRSS) remains low. This study evaluated the effects of exposure to a nationwide intervention on relevant determinants of helmet use and helmet use in DRSS. Methods The intervention mapping protocol was used to develop an in-season intervention programme targeted at adult DRSS. A prospective single-cohort study was conducted to evaluate the impact of intervention exposure on determinants of helmet use (ie, knowledge about head injury risk and preventive measures, risk perception, attitudes to head injury risk and helmet use and intention to helmet use) and self-reported helmet use. A random sample of 363 DRSS from an existing panel participated in this study. Data were collected using online questionnaires before and immediately after the 2010/2011 intervention season. In a separate sample of 363 DRSS, intervention reach was assessed after the 2010/2011 season. Results Overall, no significant associations were found between ...

Since 1994 in Canada the rate of bicycling injuries, including those to the head, has decreased among young people. In six provinces where helmet legislation was implemented, we observed a steep decline in the rate of hospital admissions for young people with cycling related head injuries (54% reduction) compared with provinces and territories without legislation (33% reduction). In adults over this same period we observed a 26% reduction in the rate of admissions for head injuries in provinces that implemented helmet legislation, compared with no reduction in provinces without legislation. While these results superficially suggest an important effect of legislation, after taking baseline trends into consideration we were unable to show an independent effect of helmet legislation on the rate of head injuries per hospital admission for a cycling related injury one year after the implementation of legislation, either overall or according to the age group of cyclists targeted by the ...
In the present study, we determined that the portrayal of seatbelt and helmet use during primetime US television programming was more prevalent than previously cited in other studies, but still below national averages. We found that only 62%, 47%, and 9% of characters on the most popular primetime television programs were portrayed using seatbelts, motorcycle helmets, or bicycle helmets, respectively, when engaged in the corresponding transportation activity. These proportions differ from other reports, which estimate the prevalence of safety belt and bicycle helmet use in films and television programs to range from 10% to 35% and 3% to 6%, respectively.7,8,9,10,11,18 We could only identify one study that calculated the prevalence of motorcycle helmet use in the media.18 This study evaluated the 50 top grossing G and PG rated movies and found that the driver was wearing a helmet in three of five (60%) motorcycling scenes. Much of the variability in published estimates can be attributed to ...

Children and adolescents aged 20 years and younger comprise more than half of the estimated 85 million bicycle riders in the U.S. It has been long-known that bicycle-related injuries result in more emergency department visits for children than any other recreational sport. However, this study looks beyond emergency department visits to examine hospitalizations, and estimates that approximately 10,700 children are hospitalized annually for a bicycle-related injury in the U.S. with an average length of stay of three days. Bicycles are associated with more childhood injuries than any other consumer product except the automobile, said Gary Smith, MD, DrPH, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy, faculty member at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and one of the study authors. The high rate of hospitalization and use of healthcare resources identified in our study supports the need for increased attention to bicycle-related injuries.. This study is the first of its ...
Study author Colin Clarke says he set out to assess New Zealands mandatory helmet laws and came to his conclusion by pooling injury and behavioural data from various sources.. But correlation does not imply causation - and this is one reason Clarkes analysis falls down.. Randomised controlled trials (RCT) are the gold standard when trying to establish a causal link between factor A and outcome B. However, not every potential causal link can be studied this way.. In Clarkes analysis, enacting a mandatory helmet law is factor A and negative events such as premature deaths constitute outcome B. But his paper fails to meet any of the necessary criteria to establish a causal relationship. This generally requires at least four stages of analysis:. 1) strength of relationship 2) correct temporal ordering 3) presence of dose response 4) elimination of potential confounders.. Lets see how Clarkes analysis shapes up against this criteria.. 1) Strength of relationship. The first step in establishing a ...
The law here is that cyclists must wear helmets, but in Europe it is not mandatory, and yet its much safer to cycle. Some say helmets make cycling more dangerous and others that they actually cause brain injury and the law should be repealed. The debate makes climate change look like a walk in the park.

Most of the welding helmets reviewed are passive welding helmets which are far more affordable than auto-darkening helmets. The low prices of the passive welding helmets are a result of the lack of automatic technology in contrast to the auto-darkening welding helmets and the fewer parts needed to manufacture them.. They are extremely lightweight and compact. The replacements for a passive welding helmet are very affordable. Their operation is as easy as it gets. You dont have to know anything about adjusting light sensitivity controls or delay controls and you dont need to change the batteries of your welding helmet. This means that you dont have to spend extra money on replacements too.. We have also reviewed two auto-darkening welding helmets e.g. Tanox Auto Darkening Solar Powered Welding Helmet and the Solar Powered Welding Helmet Auto Darkening Professional Hood, they are also lightweight and compact and cheaper than the standard auto-darkening welding helmets.. Conclusion. These best ...
It is estimated that over 44.3 million children and youth ride bicycles in the United States. Bicycles result in more childhood injuries than any other consumer product except automobiles. Children between the ages of 5 and 14 are at the highest risk for bicycle injury. These injuries are usually caused by collision with a fixed or moving object or a fall. Children between 10 and 15 years old have the highest rate of death. Traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability in bicycle crashes, but also injuries to the musculoskeletal system and internal organs can lead to death.. Bicycle helmets are the single most effective way for preventing significant bicycle injuries. It is estimated that wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head and brain injuries by 63 to 88 percent and facial injuries by 65 percent.. The United States consumer product safety commission (CPSC) has established federal safety standards for all bicycle helmets sold in the United States. Helmets that meet ...

Does this cool new helmet have a name? Nope, not yet. KTMB didnt reveal the name of the smart helmet or its specifications but were looking forward to learn more about it.. However, the helmet may be KC N901, judging from its shape and design, which has been ...
Some people dont think that bike helmets are not as effective as the helmets that motorcyclists use. They say that these helmets arent protective enough. Is it true? The answer is no. Bike helmets have been doing their jobs of protecting peoples head in case of an accident. Helmets have helped lower the risk of having traumatic brain injuries.. You reduce the risks of having a brain injury by half when you wear a helmet. When you wear a helmet, the chances of breaking bones in the facial region gets smaller. Do you think those reasons arent good enough? Wearing a helmet at all times is like wearing seatbelts. You wear seatbelts because it is the safe thing to do, but it doesnt mean you wont be hurt in case of an accident. You wear a seatbelt to avoid further damage when you accidentally get in a crash. Wearing bike helmets allows you to lower the risk of having severe injuries.. In 2013 alone, 494,000 people were rushed to the emergency room because of bike-related injuries. There were ...

Downloadable (with restrictions)! Road traffic accident fatalities lead to important private and social costs in the metropolitan areas of most low and middle income countries. An important share of these fatalities is due to injuries to the head and the neck. Helmets can provide efficient protection, but many drivers do not use them. We focus on helmet use behavior among motorbike users in Delhi. We use a detailed data set collected for the purpose of the study. To guide our empirical analysis, we rely on a model in which drivers decide on self-protection and self-insurance. The empirical findings suggest that risk-averse drivers are more likely to wear a helmet and that this has no systematic effect on speed. Helmet use also increases with education. Drivers who show a higher awareness of road risks seem to be both more likely to wear a helmet and to speed less. Controlling for risk awareness, we observe that drivers tend to compensate between speed and helmet use. The results can provide a basis for

The Magic of the Cycling Helmet:. Observations on Bicycle Helmet Safety, Protection and Efficacy. Bob Wheeler, sometime statistician. The question is, what things does a cycling helmet protect you from, and how effective is it? Do you know? Really! Ill tell you what I think, and maybe encourage you to puzzle a bit about it when the mood strikes you. The Wikipedia article on bike helmets is one place to start.. A helmet is guaranteed to protect you from cuts and scrapes and mussed hair and other hazards of the road. It is a magic amulet that shields you from bad things and guarantees your safety as you mix with autos that sometimes squeeze you to the side of the road. In addition, wearing one makes you a good person, knowledgeable about cycling and clearly removed from the hoi polloi who wear odd clothes and ride upright clunkers. In any case, the club has a rule about it.. I wear a helmet when I cycle, and have done since the first Bells were made. I have crashed, broken helmets and showed ...
It s really easy to make the safest helmet on the planet, just add ten centimeters or why not fifty centimeters of foam to the helmet problem is no one would buy it. Therefore, any helmet is a compromise between function and esthetics. Luckily, there are certifications that state the minimum performance for a helmet, so any helmet on the market will at least perform this well. However, as we know that many crashes involve forces way higher than the certifications state, and the more we look into the levels of our pro athletes, the more horrified we get over the incredible forces in some high speed crashes. This is why we make sure that we have a big margin to the allowed levels on all our helmet. Once we have managed to reach a satisfactory level of shock absorption we can focus on other important features. On some helmets we add further protective features, on others we focus on increasing ventilation or decrease weight ...
Editor,-Several case-control studies have estimated the association between wearing of a bicycle helmet and head injury due to a bicycle crash.1 Hagel and Boivin recently argued that these studies do not need the rare disease assumption in order for us to accept the odds ratio as an estimate of the incidence rate ratio.2 In support of their argument, Hagel and Boivin described a hypothetical case-control study in which the study population is thought of as people riding bicycles.2 The cases were those who had a head injury after a crash. The controls were randomly sampled from all bicycle riders, regardless of whether or not they had just crashed. Such a study would seek to answer this question: if two bicycle riders, one helmeted and one not, set out on a ride, which is more likely to sustain a head injury? We agree with the contention of Hagel and Boivin that the odds ratio from such a study would estimate the incidence rate ratio, even if it were common for bicyclists to crash and sustain ...

Within the COST Action TU1101 the working group WG 1 is dealing with acceptance criteria and problems in helmet use while bicycling concerning conspicuity, thermal stress, ventilation deficits and other potential confounding. To analyze the helmet usage practice of bicyclists in Europe a questionnaire was developed in the scope of working group 1 to collect relevant information by means of a field study. The questionnaire consists of some 66 questions covering the fields of personal data of the cyclist, riding und helmet usage habits, information concerning the helmet model and the sensation of the helmet, as well as information on previous bicycle accidents. A second complementary study is conducted to analyze if the use of a bicycle helmet influences the seating geometry and the posture of cyclists when riding a bicycle and if the if the helmet vertically limits the vision. For this purpose cyclists with and without helmets were photographed in real world situations and relevant geometrical ...

The product is currently in R&D and is taking pre-orders on Indiegogo. The upside: the SMART helmet nicely integrates the technology into an existing product that a cyclist would already use. Thats a win. But I do wonder that by solving one problem if it doesnt create two others: one of safety and two of adding additional weight to the helmet. Beginning with the latter, most cycling helmets are painstakingly designed to be lightweight and it seems a little counterintuitive to add the additional weight of the hardware and battery to the helmet. More importantly, Im curious about the safety of helmets with circuitry embedded in the helmet itself.. Personally, I would much prefer a more versatile wearable such as the LuLuLemon heart rate monitor sports bra that I could wear during various types of physical activities. But then again, Im not SMARTs target audience. ...

[email protected] For Immediate Release. Murray, Utah, May 11, 2015 - Consumer Reports just released a new study that confirms what the Brain Injury Alliance of Utah has been sharing for years: Wearing a bicycle helmet will protect your brain in the event of an accident or fall, and possibly save your life.. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 87% of people killed nationally in a bicycle accident in the past twenty years were NOT wearing a helmet. In Utah, bike accidents are the third leading cause of traumatic brain injury resulting in over 1,400 hospital visits or deaths per year.. George Gehling, Executive Director at the Brain Injury Alliance of Utah shares the importance of making a small investment into the safety of your brain, With summer fast approaching, more and more people will be riding their bikes out and about, it makes it more important that we use bike helmets. You dont need to trade your hypothetical arms and legs in exchange for a good helmet. BIAU ...
Pretty big assumption. Id assume that with facial injuries a helmet would have been a non factor,. The report just released by the JAMA (thats made the news rounds for the last two weeks) states that only 16% of bicycle injuries are head injuries.. There were just over 15,000 bicycle hospitalizations (ages 18+)in 2012/2013 so roughly 2400 head injuries for those two years (ie 1200 a year).. There is no differentiation of facial (helmet wont help) and skull injuries in the study. But considering in most situations with a bicycle incident you are more likely to face plant than land on the top or back of your head, its pretty safe to assume that the helmet will only be a factor in at best (being pretty generous here) 600 bicycle injury incidents a year.. Now consider that the most recent and likely effectiveness rate (done by averaging the results of the most reliable studies on helmet effectiveness) put the effectiveness rate of helmets reducing injury by 0-25% (pretty wide margin eh…this ...

Walter (2011), www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21819836 (New South Wales, Australia). The head injury results in all these population-level longitudinal studies, and the AIS3/4 head/brain injury results in the Carr study, are consistent with the (hospital control) results of the Thompson Cochrane Review, and the Attewell and Elvik meta-analyses, of case-control studies.. Two factors are likely to be responsible the Dennis minimal effect finding: collinearity (between time and time since intervention); and such a tiny number of pre-law data points for Ontario (30% of the 1994 injuries, law was Oct 95) and British Columbia (19% of the 1994 injuries, law was Sep 96).. Dennis et al. cite the Scuffham and Walter studies as being limited by sample size or methodological quality. However both the Scuffham and Walter analyses took baseline trends into account, and had (more than) adequate sample sizes. Macpherson claimed that the Povey and Scuffham analyses, and a preliminary (1992) MUARC study by ...

While motorcycle helmets do help to reduce the severity of traumatic brain injury, they are not foolproof. When it comes to all but the most minor motorcycle accidents, it is virtually a given that the biker will suffer some form of traumatic brain injury. The same thing is usually true with car crashes. Sixty-one observational studies were selected of varying quality. Despite methodological differences there was a remarkable consistency in results, particularly for death and head injury outcomes. Motorcycle helmets were found to reduce the risk of death and head injury in motorcyclists who crashed. From four higher quality studies helmets were estimated to reduce the risk of death by 42% (OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.50 to 0.68) and from six higher quality studies helmets were estimated to reduce the risk of head injury by 69% (OR 0.31, 95% CI 0.25 to 0.38). Insufficient evidence was found to estimate the effect of motorcycle helmets compared with no helmet on facial or neck injuries. However, studies of poorer quality suggest that helmets have no effect on the risk of neck injuries and are protective for facial injury. There was insufficient evidence to demonstrate whether differences in helmet type confer more or less advantage in injury reduction. ...

The source of the United States consistent reversal of decisions is the struggle from the aforementioned federal and state separation of powers and the goals of special interest groups who feel that helmet laws infringe too much upon their freedom of choice. Several arguments are brought forth from various groups seeking to keep helmets optional when riding. One argument is that helmets cause additional injuries, particularly to the neck when involved in an accident. At first, it may seem entirely plausible given the mass of the helmet and the expected violence and intensity of an accident. However, reports from investigating this claim disprove this assertion. Significant spinal injuries occurred in 51 cases (4.4 per cent), and no significant association with helmet use was apparent. (AFP 832) The report was unable to find any conclusive evidence that this claim is true and reduces it to an urban legend. The article went on to say Â…that the use of motorcycle helmets reduces head injuries ...

When the American War ended in 1975, the Vietnamese began the difficult task of reuniting their nation. The Doi Moi reform process launched in 1986 has led to rapid urbanization and socio-economic development. By the mid 1990s, Vietnams economy was booming, with most people switching with staggering speed from bicycle to motorcycle use. In urban areas, automobile numbers also burgeoned in response to economic growth. Vietnam seemed to be making a change to motorized vehicles more rapidly than any other country in the world.. With motorization came traffic incidents, and with traffic incidents came preventable motorcycle injuries and deaths. The need to change behavior - to somehow get Vietnamese of all ages to wear motorcycle helmets - was clear.. Motorcycle helmets became mandatory in Vietnam on December 15, 2007. When residents and visitors stepped outside that Saturday, they faced a beautiful, colorful sea of helmets on the heads of the adults and children riding by. ...
BACKGROUND: Approximately 600,000 ski- and snowboarding-related injuries occur in North America each year, with head injuries accounting for up to 20% of all injuries. Currently, there are no major institutional recommendations regarding helmet use for skiers and snowboaders in the United States, in part owing to previous conflicting evidence regarding their efficacy. The objective of this review was to evaluate existing evidence on the efficacy of safety helmets during skiing and snowboarding, particularly in regard to head injuries, neck and cervical spine injuries, and risk compensation behaviors. These data will then be used for potential recommendations regarding helmet use during alpine winter sports. METHODS: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE databases were searched using the search string helmet OR head protective devices AND (skiing OR snowboarding OR skier OR snowboarder) for articles on human participants of all ages published between January 1980 and April 2011. The search yielded 83,
Authorities and different agencies never failed to remind the public about the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle, or even bicycle. As everyone already knows, motorcycle helmets are used to protect the head of the rider and passengers, if there are any.. Whether you are the victim of a motorcycle accident, or the rider liable for it, as long as you are not wearing a helmet, the chances of acquiring head and brain injuries are high. Severe injuries may require legal assistance from a Los Angeles Motorcycle Accident Attorney.. There are 4 components that make helmets effective: the outer shell (disperses and lessens impact energy before it reaches the head) impact-absorbing liner (reduces and absorbs the shock), comfort padding (makes wearing more comfortable), and a retention system (the chin strap which secures the helmet on even during a crash).. The following are just some of the injuries to the brain a person can acquire in the event he gets into a motorcycle accident ...
Taken from the US Department of Transportation.. The number of people killed in motorcycle crashes in the United States increased dramatically in the decades prior to 1980, reaching a peak of 5,097 fatalities in that year. In the last two decades of the century, the nationwide incidence of motorcycle fatalities has declined, dropping to 2,106 fatalities per year in 1997 (1), 62 percent below the 1980 peak. Some, but not all, of the drop can be attributed to a decline in riding. Between 1980 and 1997, the number of motorcycles registered in the United States fell by 35 percent, from a high of 5.7 million to 3.7 million. The fact that the decline in fatalities has far outstripped the decline in registrations, however, suggests that the widespread introduction of helmet laws, training programs, and public education campaigns during the last two decades has had a measurable impact on the number and severity of crashes. Even so, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has estimated ...

The relatively young sport of snowboarding exhibits high injury rates. The current efforts to characterise the injury pattern of snowboarders focus largely on the general snowboard population and upper extremity injuries, the most common injury site in snowboarders as a whole. Snowboarding continues to evolve as a sport. This includes a steady progression in the degree of difficulty of the manoeuvres conducted by athletes and an increase in the number of snowboarders attempting such manoeuvres. The injury patterns across the skill levels are markedly different, and it is imperative that the research directed towards understanding the disparate lower extremity injury pattern of elite-level snowboarders is increased.. Review: Injuries in Elite and Recreational Snowboarders. ...
A True Game Changer. The 6D ATR-1 off-road motorcycle helmet has changed the industry forever. Introduced in 2013 it was the first motorcycle helmet ever manufactured incorporating technology that reduced angular acceleration and low-threshold impact energy transfer to the brain during crash impact. This was accomplished by 6Ds revolutionary Omni-Directional Suspension (ODS) system.. The 6D ATR-1 was the Game Changer in 2013, and today it is still the most effective off-road helmet available for athletes looking for the ultimate in head protection. The ATR-1 is certified to exceed US DOT FMVSS 218 and ASTM F3103 (US), ECE 22.05 (47 Countries World-Wide), AS 1698 (Australia) and ACU (UK) standards.. ,. p class=font_8>. ...
Over the Labor Day weekend, I was out taking my morning walk in Fenwick Island. As a pediatrician, I spend my time observing the children that I see. I made two observations during my walk that were interesting. The first was related to bicycle riders. I saw several families out riding their bicycles together. What was interesting was that some of the children were wearing helmets and some were not. The parents of the children were similarly attired. Those whose children wore helmets had helmets of their own. Those whose children were not wearing helmets also were without helmets. Two different lessons were being taught. One group of parents was teaching their children a lesson about bicycle safety. They not only taught that lesson but also demonstrated it. They wore helmets too. The other group of parents was teaching their children to not ride safely. Since they were in Delaware, they were also teaching their children to break the law. They were doing this with their actions. Both behaviors ...

The most obvious and straightforward reason is comfort. It can get hot in your helmet, and ventilation keeps the internal temperature low. Not only is comfort essential if you want to enjoy riding your motorcycle, but it also allows you to focus on the road so you can stay as safe as possible. Secondly, and more importantly, proper ventilation keeps the glass from fogging up. This is especially important when it is humid or raining. It can be downright dangerous if you helmets glass fogs up and you cannot see. Finally, the ventilation helps keep the interior lining from smelling bad. You will need to clean the lining of your helmet occasionally no matter what, but proper ventilation greatly extends how long you wait in between cleanings.. What Makes for Good Ventilation. There are a few things you should look for when looking for a motorcycle helmet sale. First and foremost, make sure the helmet designers actually considered ventilation when they made the thing. If there is at least some system ...

Wow. I cannot believe the number of anti-individualist and/or collectivist comments coming from pro-helmet-wearing riders in response to this article. Maybe its just that the helmet topic brings out the collectivist or authoritarian-oriented holier-than-thou riders, and the rest of us just ignore the topic. I feel compelled to respond in the interest of balance.. Full disclosure: Age 43. Been riding morotcycles for 37 years. Prefer dual-sports, adventure touring, and sportbikes. Never owned a cruiser; probably never will. Currently own four motorcycles. I wear a helmet most of the time (80%+), but not always. I have had plenty of spills when I was younger, fortunately never a head injury either with or without a helmet.. First, the argument that the government (i.e., taxpayer funding) owns (or regulates) the roads and thus has the right to tell us what to do for our own good (wear helmets, fasten seatbelts, limit speeds, purchase only vehicles approved by the authorities, etc.) is no ...

A direct correlation between motorcycle sales and fatalities is bad new for motorcycle riders. To our knowledge this is the first study to examine feature-specific injury rates and potential risk factors for TP snowboarding injuries. Data collection methods were found to be accurate and reliable for age and sex information. There was substantial to perfect agreement for most risk factors for injured snowboarders, including feature use.27 Self-reported risk factors were confirmed with reliable sources where possible. The overall injury rate of TP snowboarders was estimated at 0.75/1000 runs. Feature-specific injury rates were higher for features that supported aerial manoeuvres or a large drop to the ground. Aerial features facilitate more air time and we hypothesise that snowboarders may have more opportunity to lose their sense of body position/orientation and land with more force and this increases the likelihood of injury.. Research suggests that TP injuries are more severe than those on regular slopes.15 ,16 ,18 One study reported an overall TP injury rate of 0.62/1000 ski and ...

The most commonly used safety equipment was helmets (69% overall), even in Toronto where use of helmets is not required of adults. This reflects the emphasis on helmets as the major safety measure for bicyclists in Canada [27]. Use of lights was uncommon (~20%), but it is required at night in both jurisdictions, and these laws were followed by about the same proportion of cyclists as complied with helmet legislation in Vancouver (~77%). Use of lights at dusk and dawn is also mandated by legislation, but this was much less prevalent in our study. The use of lights in the daytime was rare. Since 1990, the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard has required that all motor vehicles be equipped with front daytime running lights, so it is interesting that the potential for increasing the visibility of cyclists via use of lights in daytime has not been recognized either in law or by individuals. A new development related to this issue is bike share systems. These are being implemented in various ...
As we have discussed in previous blog posts (like this one discussing the likelihood of catastrophic injuries when in a motorcycle crash), motorcycles are common sights on the Los Angeles roads and freeways. Unfortunately for the riders, statistics show that a motorcyclist is five times more likely to be injured in an accident than the occupant of a car and a motorcyclist is more likely to die in a collision than the passenger or driver of a car. There something to be said for having tons of steel protecting you against other vehicles. Whether you drive a motorcycle or another type of vehicle in Southern California, drive carefully ...
Do you always wear a helmet to protect yourself as you ride a motorcycle? If the answer is no, then you may want to pay attention to the following research results.
Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death and a major cause of morbidity among school age children. A survey of the educational needs concerning injury prevention of a group of fifth and sixth grade children (ages 10-12) in Holliston, MA, revealed educational deficiencies, including bicycle safety, seatbelt use, firearms use, and water safety. It is well known that the use of helmets can prevent bicycle injuries. Yet, not one of the children in this study reported using a bicycle helmet. Although most States have laws requiring seatbelts for young children, school age children are not covered by this legislation. The hazards of firearms have been well-documented. But it is clear that the children surveyed were in need of education about firearms; nearly half had used some form of firearms. Individual counseling by pediatricians combined with school- and community-based programs can address injury prevention. It is anticipated that many pediatricians will begin using the questionnaire ...

Apparently Im bad at math. Youre supposed to replace your motorcycle helmet approximately every 5 years (Ive heard) because the protective layers degrade over time and the helmet is less effective. I thought that I had been riding for 5 years, but upon closer scrutiny from Miranda it has only been 4 seasons. In any case, the other night I got drunk and ordered a helmet for $300 USD. My original helmet was about $200 CAD, but I sought better protection given my added knowledge. My upgrade, if I decide to keep it, will be Snell 2010 certified, whereas my original helmet was merely DOT. Thats the major difference.. Im guessing that it will be D-loop instead of the clicky-ratchet fastener on my Joe Rocket helmet. That gives me slight pause because I imagine it will be difficult to do with gloves on, and on probably 10 or more occasions Ive ridden off while forgetting to do my helmet up so itll be even more of an adventure pulling over and taking gloves off to fasten it, but I imagine its ...
The 2014 riding season in Ontario was notable for also being the most deadly one in years, with 32 Ontarians perishing in motorcycle crashes all year. As Summer winds down, a sobering statistic shows that 2015 is on course to be an even worse season. To date, 29 have died on Ontario roads already this year.. The Ontario Provincial Police are reminding motorcyclists to practice defensive riding to protect themselves from motorists who may not see them and always be ready to react to another motorists mistake.. Sharron St-Croix, Executive Director of the Rider Training Institute reinforces that warning, saying that We as riders need to understand that riding within the rules of the road will not always keep us safe, we have to ride tactically. We need to ensure that we are seen. Noting that the worst interaction between bikes and cars comes when a car is turning left, St-Croix suggests that there are strategies such as changing position within a lane to ensure that a rider is not camouflaged by ...
Use of motorcycles helmets significantly reduces the risk of fatality or serious brain injury to riders in the event of a crash, but riders often do not wear helmets in warm weather because of thermal discomfort. We propose to develop an innovative ventilation and cooling system that will maintain a cool, dry environment inside the helmet while also meeting applicable safety standards. The key the .... ...
Featured prominently in the February 2012 American Motorcyclist is a full page ad for Allstate Insurance that depicts one of the worst characterizations of motorcycle safety Ive ever seen in the magazine.. Before I get to their ad, first a little history on Allstate and their support of the motorcycling community. According to the October 2001 issue of American Motorcyclist, Allstate was one of the insurance companies that was blacklisting certain high performance motorcycles because apparently they were terribly unsafe. The list of motorcycles they blacklisted showed they had no clue about motorcycles, and even if the concept of not insuring certain motorcycles because they were unsafe was valid, they missed the mark when they targeted certain motorcycles.. For example, they banned every motorcycle made by Moto Guzzi, and Ducati. Were they racist against Italians or what? Sure Ducati has a reputation of making some great sportbikes, but they also make adventure bikes and sport touring bikes. ...
