The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services charged under the Superfund Act to assess the presence and nature of health hazards at specific Superfund sites and to help prevent or reduce further exposure and the illnesses that result from such exposures.

Two years ago, we began research on the global use, release and production of hazardous chemicals. This internal research was part of a wider effort to help us reassess our Detox strategy. Audience research, corporate and policy intelligence, among other things, helped us decide which industrial sectors and chemicals to focus on. We asked: where in the supply chain of sector X are hazardous chemicals used and/or released? What are the current trends for this particular group of hazardous chemicals?
