In 1946, Hawaii was placed on the United Nations list of non-self-governing territories. America transmitted annual reports on Hawaii to the United Nations Secretary General from 1946 until September 1959. By a letter of September 17, 1959, after a statehood vote in Hawaii with 94 percent approval (of the 35% of eligible voters; there were a total of 133,000 votes for annexation out of an eligible voting population of 382,000), the United States notified the U.N. Secretary General that Hawaii had become a state of the Union in August 1959 and that the United States would thereafter cease to transmit information to the United Nations. The United Nations accepted this notification and removed Hawaii from the list of non-self-governing territories, recognizing the statehood of Hawaii.. The acceptance of statehood for Hawaii was not without its share of controversy. Many Native Hawaiians in Hawaii protested against statehood. Also, various bills of admission were stalled in congressional hearings ...

On the 18th of January 1778 James Cooks expedition found the first 4 islands of the Hawaiian archipelago. Famed explorer charted them on the map and named them Sandwich. 18th of January is marked in history as the day of the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. If you examine modern maps, we can see that the Hawaiian Islands represent an archipelago that consists of 24 islands and atolls, located in the North Pacific Ocean. Since 1959 Hawaii is the 50th states of the U.S.A. Immediately, as James Cook came ashore, he saw a crowd of natives, who fell to his knees and began to express their respect. Hawaiians believed that the God-man is a stranger. Aborigines believe in the existence of the God Rono, once gone out to sea and promised to return in a century.

On Saturday, January 23, 2016 the Ticked Off Music Fest held its fifth event since 2013 and its first event off of the contiguous US mainland. It was hosted in a location that most people would think to be the last place where Lyme disease could appear… the island of Oahu, Hawaii.. Even in the Lyme community, Hawaii is thought to be a bit of a safe zone where no ticks exist and incidents of infection and Lyme patients is nil. I admit to being of this mind when I got a call in the fall of last year from two Lyme patients living on two separate islands in Hawaii, inviting us to host an event there.. The first thing I asked these women was the first thing people asked me when I announced we were doing our next event in Honolulu… Is there Lyme disease in Hawaii? The fact that these Lyme patients were infected on the mainland and then moved to Hawaii wasnt a stretch of the imagination, and the fact that a high percentage of the islands is populated with military personnel who are getting ...

However, the quarantine requirement was supposed to end on August 1. But it was moved forward to September and now it is moved to October 1, the government announced.. The quarantine free reopening was delayed because of many factors Ige said. One reason was that in the US there is a recurrence of new cases every day. It also includes California, which is one of Hawaiis main visitor markets.. However, there has been an increase in cases in Hawaii. The Hawaii Department of Health on August 19, reported 261 new coronavirus cases. The total number of cases is now 5,609 cases statewide since February 28, 2020.. This was an extremely difficult decision to make. This delay will further hurt our economy, but as Ive always said-we will make decisions based on the best available science and facts prioritizing the health and safety of Hawaii residents, Governor Ige said in a statement.. Once the coronavirus testing option starts, travelers from other states coming to Hawaii will have to get a ...

The native Hawaiian honeycreepers represent a classic example of adaptive radiation and speciation, but currently face one the highest extinction rates in the world. Although multiple factors have likely influenced the fate of Hawaiian birds, the relatively recent introduction of avian malaria is thought to be a major factor limiting honeycreeper distribution and abundance. We have initiated genetic analyses of class II β chain Mhc genes in four species of honeycreepers using methods that eliminate the possibility of sequencing mosaic variants formed by cloning heteroduplexed polymerase chain reaction products. Phylogenetic analyses group the honeycreeper Mhc sequences into two distinct clusters. Variation within one cluster is high, with dN , dS and levels of diversity similar to other studies of Mhc (B system) genes in birds. The second cluster is nearly invariant and includes sequences from honeycreepers (Fringillidae), a sparrow (Emberizidae) and a blackbird (Emberizidae). This highly ...

Katharina is a gifted healer of the spirit and the body. I was in Kauai in May of 2014 with my husband, and we had arranged for Katharina to give us each massages on our first day in Kauai. We both found her touch to be deeply healing, so we then arranged to spend the day with her to hike and to Connect with the healing land of Kauai as she so gently puts it. On our arranged day, Katharina picked us up and took us to a beautiful beach and over slices of fresh papaya she gently explained the ancient wisdom of the Hawaiian culture and the power that resides in the 6 million year old spiritual places on Kauai. She introduced us to the profound tradition of the Hawaiian Bowl of Light, light that we are all born with, and we performed a meaningful ceremony on the beach to initiate our day of interior and exterior exploration. In a little more than 6 months after the Hawaii Superferry filed for bankruptcy here in Hawaii, Rep. Joe Souki introduced a bill to do a feasibility study on creating a statewide ferry system, along with a Hawaii State Ferry System Authority to operate that system between the islands. Of course government thinks it can do better than a private company that spent millions of its own dollars to operate a ferry system in Hawaii and failed. Government has access to what it thinks is unlimited taxpayer funds and makes all the laws - two things the private sector does not have at its disposal. We grocery shopped at Walmart first, then Foodland for things we couldnt find at Walmart. No matter where you are in the world, Walmart always has the best deals. However, when things are expensive at Walmart, you cant help but think about the poor locals who have to shop in Hawaii all the time for every day things. I just balked at the high prices of so many things. I have forgotten how expensive it was to live in Hawaii and I know for a fact that people there make much less than people on the mainland. I know prices are all relative but were Vancouverites and food and every day things for us is quite affordable. For instance, green onions are as much as 6 times more expensive in Hawaii. Many things are 2 to 3 times more. A few things were cheaper such as pineapple, papaya, macadamia nuts, mahi mahi, and wine. We focused on buying things that were local or that were cheaper and worked our food menu around that. When the farmers market in our area opened on Thursday, we went there and ...

Hawaii lawmakers have proposed a number of bills this year aimed at making sure Hawaii is better prepared to deal with a toxic spill in the wake of the September molasses leak at Honolulu Harbor that killed thousands of fish and devastated coral reefs. A ruptured pipeline caused a quarter million gallons of molasses to spill into the harbor, sparking intense public scrutiny of Matson shipping company as well as state agencies charged with regulating the harbor, in particular the Hawaii Department of Transportation. Hawaiis Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR) is proposing to fine Hale Mahaolu more than $155,000 for failing to protect workers and the public from the risk of asbestos exposure. Hale Mahaolu is a nonprofit corporation that owns and manages affordable housing for elders and families. According to DLIRs Occupational Safety and Health Division, the companys managers knew that units at the Lahaina Surf Complex in Maui contained asbestos. Licensed asbestos abatement contractors had been hired to do work there in the past. But between January and June 2013, the company allowed non-licensed contractors as well as its own employees to perform construction work at the complex that brought them into contact with asbestos. Dear Friend,. Despite telecom industry pushback, including a formal submission by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), the Hawaii County Council, which represents the entire Big Island of Hawaii and over 200,000 residents, overwhelmingly passed a resolution calling for wireless companies to halt 5G deployments due to health and environmental risks.. Only one council member, Tim Richards, voted against the resolution, saying that it didnt go far enough and that the County should investigate scrapping all cellular infrastructure on the island and invest in a safe fiber optic network instead.. The resolution that was passed is based on our sample 5G resolution which you can access via the 5G Action Toolkit here.. Congratulations to the 5G action group in Hawaii for facilitating this great win and the hundreds of residents who submitted testimony in support of the resolution. About 5000 km from the nearest landmass, the oceanic islands of the Hawaiian Archipelago are some of the most isolated on Earth, and they present some interesting biogeography and conservation issues (MacDowall 2003). By the 1980s, there were eighty-four recorded endemic species within the archipelago and twenty-nine of these species were listed as endangered by the International Council for Bird Preservation (Scott et al. 1988). One endemic bird of interest is the Hawaiian Hawk (Buteo solitarius), which is only one of two endemic raptors found within the archipelago (USFWS 1994). Given that island birds are more vulnerable to extinction than similar continental land birds (Restani and Marzluff 2001), thorough and effective conservation practices need to be utilized to maintain their population within the Hawaiian Archipelago. However, some argue that the Hawaiian Hawk has reached a sustainable population size and call for downlisting or even delisting it from the Endangered Species Act of ...
