Downloadable! Let a societys unhappiness be measured by the aggregate of the levels of relative deprivation of its members. When two societies of equal size, F and M, merge, unhappiness in the merged society is shown to be higher than the sum of the levels of unhappiness in the constituent societies when apart; merger alone increases unhappiness. But when societies F and M merge and marriages are formed such that the number of households in the merged society is equal to the number of individuals in one of the constituent societies, unhappiness in the merged society is shown to be lower than the aggregate unhappiness in the two constituent societies when apart. This result obtains regardless of which individuals from one society form households with which individuals from the other, and even when the marriages have not (or not yet) led to income gains to the married couples from increased efficiency, scale economies, and the like. While there are various psychological reasons for people to become

Philosophy of happiness is often discussed in conjunction with ethics. Traditional European societies, inherited from the Greeks and from Christianity, often linked happiness with morality, which was concerned with the performance in a certain kind of role in a certain kind of social life. However, with the rise of individualism, begotten partly by Protestantism and capitalism, the links between duty in a society and happiness were gradually broken. The consequence was a redefinition of the moral terms. Happiness is no longer defined in relation to social life, but in terms of individual psychology. Happiness, however, remains a difficult term for moral philosophy. Throughout the history of moral philosophy, there has been an oscillation between attempts to define morality in terms of consequences leading to happiness and attempts to define morality in terms that have nothing to do with happiness at all.[32] In the Nicomachean Ethics, written in 350 BCE, Aristotle stated that happiness (also ...
Happiness is one of those elusive things that people believe they want really bad, but cant describe what it is exactly. For the unhappy, all they know is that happiness is something else, its not what theyre feeling, its not what theyre going through. Some think happiness is joy, excitement, others associate it with lack of problems and stress. The fact is most people dont know what happiness is and even when they claim theyre happy, theyre probably not! Excitement and joy are not happiness! Happy moments dont make a happy life. Relying on positive feelings is dangerous because it can be addictive. If you convince yourself that happiness is a state of bliss and enjoyment, youll always be seeking for a thrill, for those exciting moments when you feel alive. The rest of your life seems boring. You think that youre not happy because you dont experience pleasure all the time.. If you believe happiness is lack of problems and stress, you tend to feel bothered by the slightest threat ...
The implication of spontaneous and induced unhappiness to peoples decision style is examined. It is postulated that unhappy individuals have a greater tendency to avoid frequent losses because these can have depleting effects, and unhappy individuals are more sensitive to such effects. This is evaluated in Study 1 by using an annoying customer call manipulation to induce negative affect; and by examining the effect of this manipulation on choices in an experiential decision task (the Iowa Gambling task). In Study 2 we examined the association between self-reported (un)happiness and choices on the same decision task. In Study 1 the induction of negative affect led to avoidance of choice alternatives with frequent losses, compared to those yielding rarer but larger losses. Specifically, this pertained to the advantageous alternatives with frequent versus non-frequent losses. In Study 2 unhappiness was similarly associated with less exposure to frequent losses; while extreme high happiness was associated
The happiness workout. If youre feeling miserable, medication might not be the answer for you. Rebecca Hardy discovers the power of positive thinking Tuesday October 30, 2007. The Guardian Misery: its everywhere these days. We are all popping happy pills like Smarties, checking ourselves into the Priory and stocking up on happiness books. But for every report telling us it is all down to our ever-longer working hours, additive-laden food and endless commutes, there is a growing body of scientific research suggesting that happiness is, quite literally, a state of mind.. You have to decide to be happy, says Paul Jenner, author of Teach Yourself Happiness. Most people think happiness is something that arrives by itself, like rain. But it isnt. Barring seriously depressed people, most westerners have plenty to be happy about, but they choose to focus on things they havent got. It really is that simple.. Scientific research is starting to back this idea up. Rather than happiness being ...
We all want to be happy, right? But most of us probably dont even have a concrete idea in mind about what we really mean when we think about happiness.. Thats because happiness is largely a concept, and a complicated one at that. It can be especially difficult for most of us to think about happiness in todays age, as were constantly checking our social media accounts only to find more and more updates about how were living on a planet full of pain. These instant reality checks have caused me to redefine the term happiness itself. I no longer think of happiness as fuzzy-wuzzy. I can no longer associate it with a smiley face and the everyday greeting, Have a nice day.. We need to redefine happiness. We need to conceive of happiness more like well-being, a sense of stability that is not contingent on the external, and can exist regardless of whatever turbulent events happen in the world.. Happiness, like all emotions, comes and goes. Still, there are behaviors and attitudes we can adopt ...

Happiness comes in so many different forms that it can be hard to grasp. Unhappiness, on the other hand, is easy to identify; you know it when you see it, and you definitely know when its taken ahold of you.. And lets face it, happiness and work do not always go hand in hand. A 2013 Gallup study, which reported data from more than 180 million people, found that just 13% of us consider ourselves to be happily engaged at work.. Those who do rate themselves as happy are 36% more motivated, six times more energized, and twice as productive as their unhappy counterparts.. Happiness actually has less to do with your circumstances than you might think. A University of Illinois study found that people who earn the most (more than $10 million annually) are only a smidge happier than the average Joes and Janes who work for them, and psychologists from the University of California found that genetics and life circumstances only account for about 50% of a persons happiness. The rest is up to ...

I learned that it was a relatively new research field known as positive psychology. Prior to 1998, almost all psychology was about trying to figure out how to get people who had something wrong with them more normal. But most psychologists and researchers never ...

Well, at least from a neurological perspective.. This weeks image is a colourful MRI scan displaying the spectrum of happiness; found within the neural mechanisms of the research participants who took part in the Kyoto study. Researchers discovered that participants who scored highest in happiness surveys exhibited a greater mass of grey matter in the precuneus, a region in the medial parietal lobe.. So what leads to this physical manifestation of happiness? The team at Kyoto were able to link a larger precuneus to those who were generally more satisfied, and able to find more meaning in life. Interestingly, these people who felt happiness most intensely, and therefore had a larger precuneus, also experienced sadness less intensely ...
Perhaps I am totally wrong or a bit confused. My emotions and expressions, methods of how I express myself are different from most people. I have always equated happiness to something temporary, it lasts for a short period of time and then it disappears. Much like a butterfly, rainbow or a giant soap bubble that floats so gracefully through the air only to pop before your eyes. Truly happiness is nice plateu or mountain to climb but eventually there is the descent back to level ground all over again. These moments of happiness can be life changing and very emotional. Without any shadow of doubt, being happy is a choice you make every single day of your life.. But for me, I want more than just happiness -. Because of the gaps and holes in my own life experience, healing has not always been easy. To be open and honest about it, sometimes I still struggle with it but I refuse to give up even after being knocked down so many times. Becoming aware of the pain and suffering of others all around it is ...
Both the fulfilment of affection, status, and behavioral confirmation needs and their role in happiness may differ along the adult lifespan. We examined age-graded differences in (a) the fulfilment of the need for affection, status, and behavioral confirmation, (b) disharmonious profiles of need fulfillment (e.g., high affection but low status), and (c) the associations between these needs and happiness. Data from 11,406 Dutch respondents (age range 18-87 (M = 44.82, SD = 14.62), 67% female) were collected via hoegekis.nl and categorized over six age groups (early, young, middle-aged and late adults, young-old and oldest-old). Age-graded differences in social need fulfilment and their link to happiness were examined using regression analyses. Need fulfillment profiles were identified with LCA cluster analyses. Age-graded differences in social need fulfilment were virtually absent (Cohens d = 0.20 or smaller) and their link with happiness was stable across the age groups. Social need fulfilment ...
Scientific research has shown that happiness has real medical implications. There is proof that happiness has a physiological effect on conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.  People who are happier heal more quickly, have stronger immune systems and, on average, live longer, says Ed Diener, professor of psychology at the University of Illinois and author of Happiness: Unlocking the Mysteries of Psychological Wealth. Prof Diener points to studies by Sarah Pressman, assistant professor at the University of Kansas Psychology department, and her colleague Sheldon Cohen. Volunteers who had a positive attitude were found to be less likely to develop a cold when exposed to the virus. The duos most recent study found a link between happiness and fast recovery from surface wounds.. Hilary Tindle, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, co-authored an August 2009 study of just under 100,000 women which found that those with an optimistic outlook had a 90 per cent ...
What is happiness for me? I just recently learned some new things that actually allows me to answer this question. I have been on a personal struggle as of late trying to figure out why I couldnt be happy. The last two to three years to be exact. It took someone telling me Only worry about the things you can control. We are in charge of our own happiness. We make our own choices which in turn shape our lives. The choices might not always be the best ones, and they may even take us down the wrong path. But those are life lessons and we are meant to learn from them. Once we learn from them, they help us to make better choices. For me, I found that one statement meant everything to my happiness, which Ive learned is quite simple to reach. It was about getting rid of the drama in my life and toxic people, you know, the ones that just simply drain you of all your energy. They drain you of your spark and your spirit. So in answer to your question, happiness for me involves two places, at home on ...
The books goal is to justify morality by arguing both that it is harmful to oneself to immorally harm others, and that living as happily as possible is achieved by living as virtuously as possible. It starts by showing how morality and self-interest are not conceptually at odds, and two arguments are given, one ontological and the other epistemological, for the conclusion that immorality harms its perpetrators self-respect, and thereby their happiness. An examination ensues of a developmental theory of practical rationality, wherein we learn to value what truly contributes to happiness by first appreciating that our own egoistic happiness is not the most important thing in the world. On this view, immorality is not the product of irrationality, but rather the product of having bad values or a stunted sense of value. From here, the benefits of living morally are easily seen. The cardinal virtues, courage, justice, temperance, and wisdom constitute our happiness though they are not sufficient for

Downloadable! The issue of what determines subjective well-being has been at the centre of a recent flurry of research in the economics field. A necessary part of this understanding is the role relative positions (economic, social, geographic) of economic agents, particularly individuals, play in life (commonly referred to in the literature as rivalry). In this paper we concentrate on whether the structure of happiness equations of South Africa are the same/similar to those of developed countries. The analysis uses three of the Durban Quality of Life Studies. Firstly these three data series are pooled and a variety of covariates are tested for their significance on happiness. These include age, marital status, employment status, household income and relative household income. Next we estimate yearly cross-sectional models to see if there are consistent findings of what determines happiness across the period considered. Our findings indicate there maybe some structural differences between results from
If you ask most people what they want in their lives and what is most important, they will likely tell you that they want to be happy. The desire for happiness is a universal want. It transcends culture, geography, age, and social status. The topic of happiness even finds its way into the academia, an example of its pervasiveness.. The most popular course at Harvard Medical School is a course on happiness. Taught by Harvard psychology professor Tal D. Ben-Shahar, Ph.D., the course is so popular that students wait a year or longer to get in.. A Different Take. Happiness is traditioanlly defined as a state of well-being and contentment, joy, a pleasurable or satisfying experience; yet many people report that happiness is elusive or too often fleeting at best.. Modern happiness gurus like Ben-Shahar offer an altered take on what happiness is or can be. They invite us to walk around the subject and take a different look at the almost mystical feeling called happiness. They suggest not an Ill be ...
We have to turn our backs on happiness if we are to find it. This is because much of what we define as happiness is just ego-validation, and egos are the source of our discontentment. As long as we pursue happiness, we will never find it.
Double Happiness by Jeanne Ming-Braintingham. However, the tools found in happiness research are those I practice in my recovery from depression and anxiety, even though, theoretically, I can be happy and depressed at the same time. I came up with my own recovery program that coincides with the steps toward happiness published in positive psychology studies.. 1. Sleep. Sleep is crucial to sanity because sleep disturbances can contribute to, aggravate, and even cause mood disorders and a host of other illnesses. The link between sleep deprivation and psychosis was documented in a 2007 study at Harvard Medical School and the University of California at Berkeley. Using MRI scans, they found that sleep deprivation causes a person to become irrational because the brain cant put an emotional event in proper prospective and is incapable of making an appropriate response. Chronic sleep deprivation, especially, is bad news. It often affects memory and concentration. And, according to one recent study, ...
Because there are chemicals released into the body when we are in a state of happiness or bliss, it is physically impossible for humans to experience true happiness all the time. Being it is a state of mand rather than a place or location to reach, we can and do have as much or as little control over our own happiness as we choose. We cannot be happy every moment of every day. Our lives are always changing as well as the ones around us. We are the only ones who are in control of our minds. Along with free will, it all makes it a part of life and that is what can make it so great. I really enjoyed the info you produced in your posting. Thank you. ...

BackgroundThe results of recent decades of psychology have shown that happiness and resilience can predict the hope of women with breast cancer, but does quality of life play a mediating role in the relationship between these variables?AimsThe purpose of this study was to investigate the Hopefulness Prediction Modeling based on Resilience and Happiness Considering the Mediating Role of Quality of Life in Women with Breast Cancer.MethodThe research method was descriptive and of structural equation modeling. The statistical population of this study included all patients with breast cancer referring to Cancer Institute of Imam Khomeini and Milad hospitals in Tehran. Purposeful sampling method was used to select the sample. In this way, 300 patients with breast cancer were selected based on the criteria of entering and leaving the research. The research instruments were Omid Schneider et al. (1991), the Conor-Davidson Resilience Questionnaire (2003), Oxford Happiness Scale (1989), and World Health
We all know that a pit bull smile is completely irresistible, but now the whole world gets to see what weve been talking about! The United Nations has chosen a pit bull to be the face of world happiness for International Happiness Day on March 20th.. Macy is a four-year-old pit bull terrier dog whose sweet face will be on one of six stamps for World Happiness Day, the one stamp that was chosen as the cover for their promotional brochure.. Macy was deemed unadoptable at a high kill shelter, but was then rescued by Grateful Dogs, a rescue organization in the San Francisco area that saves dogs facing imminent euthanasia. Jackie Shen fostered Macy, but foster mom quickly became forever mom.. Before meeting Macy, Jackie was actually a little intimidated by pit bulls. I had never considered myself a pit bull person, and if I were honest, they scared me a little, Shen said. However, Macy completely blew my stereotypes and preconceptions out of the water. The thing Macy loves above all else is human ...
With the financial crisis in 2008 deepening its impact all over the world, the reconsideration of development has come to the center of the stage of social science. Instead of entirely relying on the gross domestic product measurement for development evaluation in tradition, policymakers, scholars and media begin to pay attention to happiness studies. Along with the increasing importance of global governance, national happiness becomes a new consensus to measure development internationally, which will surely put some weights on public policy making and global governance.. According to the standard provided by the World Bank, China has become an upper-middle income economy. How to avoid the middle-income trap is of great significance to Chinas development. Chinese national happiness studies not only provide new perspectives to complete the existing framework of analyzing development mechanism, but also offer great values on policy making.. On January 23, the Brookings-Tsinghua Center will host ...

The DSM - often referred to as The Bible of Psychiatry - lists over 300 (!) mental disorders.. Remarkably, I learned today, happiness is not one of them. Turns out that psychologist Richard Bentall was as surpised as I am. So in 1992 he proposed to classify happiness as a mental disorder, because it is statistically abnormal, consists of a discrete cluster of symptoms, is associated with a range of cognitive abnormalities, and probably reflects the abnormal functioning of the central nervous system.. Moreover, according to Bentall, happiness reflects a lack of contact with reality.. I think he has a fair point.. ...
Socrates must do this in order to defend against the claim that justice is incompatible with happiness, as happiness is commonly understood, which is to say, as εὐδαιμονία was commonly understood among the Greeks, who ordinarily took material prosperity to be a central component of the εὐδαίμων life. The disjunction between Socratess revisionary idea of εὐδαιμονία, in which it is analytically tied to δικαιοσύνη, and the one pressed by his interlocutors, in which εὐδαιμονία and δικαιοσύνη are at odds, comes up again and again in the Republic. Platos idea of εὐδαιμονία denies the identification of εύδαιμονία with ἡδονή, but it would be implausible as an idea of εύδαιμονία - and certainly it would be implausible for us as an idea of happiness - if it failed to acknowledge some relationship between εὐδαιμονία and ἡδονή. In fact, Platos view on the relationship between ἡδονή ...

Aristotle begins the Nicomachean Ethics by asking what the final good for human beings is. He identifies this final good with happiness, and in the rest of Book I, asks what happiness is. It happens that parents take diligent care of their children, and try to play the role of providers of happy-destinies. They arrange for a better school, a better college; everything for the sake of their kids. Children seem to have everything except happiness. They are lucky but not happy. Why is it so? Usually people come to the conclusion that the parents should not have helped the children; instead, they should have let the children get everything for themselves, Nobody helped us in our youth.. But why? Why not help children if there is a possibility? What kind of people would we be if we denied helping children due to abstract educational constructions or due to vindictive feelings, as the ant to the dragonfly, I have worked and so should you (Krylov)? We are not moralizing ants, and children are not dragonflies. We have another relationship; we love children and are ready to help them.. When parents help their children they are not making a mistake. The mistake is made when the parents ...
Could perfect happiness consist of perfect love?. Heres a line of argument that it couldnt. Constitutively central to love are the desire for the beloveds good and for union with the beloved. A love is no less perfect when its constitutive desires are unfulfilled. But perfect happiness surely cannot be even partly constituted by unfulfilled desires. If perfect happiness consistent of perfect love, then one could have a perfect happiness constituted at least partly by unfulfilled desires.. When this argument first occurred to me a couple of hours ago, I thought it settled the question. But it doesnt quite. For there is a special case where a perfect loves constitutive desires are always fulfilled, namely when the object of the love is necessarily in a perfectly good state, so that the desire for the beloveds good is necessarily fulfilled, and when the union proper to the love is of such a sort that it exists whenever the love does. Both of these conditions might be thought to be satisfied ...

What makes a life worth living? Most of us pursue happiness. The American constitution even considers it an unalienable right. But what is happiness? A feeling of joy running through your body? A life filled with happy moments? Recognition, stable relationships or the absence of suffering? Paradoxically, the pursuit of happiness can lead us away from a good life, and make us strive for the unreachable or sacrifice the good life for instant satisfaction. Research even purports to tell us which countries have the highest happiness scores, and which activities create feelings of happiness within us.. Meditative silence brings us closer to our own spontaneous inner flow. This enhances our contact with ourselves and with others. How does this relate to happiness and the good life? What are the dilemmas encountered when searching for a meaningful life? The reflections discussed in this webinar are based both on research and experience with Acem Meditation. ...

Description: Scholars of the social sciences have devoted increasing attention of late to the concept of human happiness, mainly from sociological and psychological perspectives. This groundbreaking volume, which includes twelve essays from scholars of the New Testament, the Old Testament, systematic theology, practical theology, and counseling psychology-along with an extensive introduction and epilogue by the editor-poses a new and exciting question: what is happiness according to the Bible? Informed by developments in positive psychology, the contributions explore representations of happiness throughout the Bible and demonstrate the ways in which they impinge upon both religious and secular understandings of happiness.. Subjects: Bible, Literature, Methods, Social-Scientific Approaches, ...
Even though I know suffering and pain, I choose to be happy. Even though I have to deal with sadness, I pursue joy. I realize the most important strategy to achieve happiness is to choose this path. I make the choice to stay positive during challenges. I choose to focus on the good things despite the negativity around me. Whatever happens, I am still in control of my emotions.. I get to decide how I feel. I get to select how I react to the words and actions of others. I am responsible for my own happiness. I know happiness is a conscious decision. Both my mind and body play a role in the joy I feel. I let go of fear, worry, pain, anxiety, stress, and jealousy. I avoid sorrow and anger. I get rid of resentment before it builds up. I feed my happy side with positivity. I pay attention to my judgments, criticisms, or negativity. I notice my moaning and stop it before it affects my happiness. I constantly express gratitude. I see the wonderful things in my life and thank the universe for them. This ...

Excellent question. J.S. Mill regarded the Greatest Happiness Principle as the moral truth. The principle states that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness. Mill then equated happiness with pleasure, following Benthamite tradition. After all, both Bentham and Mill are called utilitarians. This equation however causes a lot of confusion to many readers thereafter.. Mill uses pleasure differently from Bentham. To Bentham, pleasure refers to sense-perceptional, mental states. For example, a beer lover can obtain such a mental state when he tastes Stone Ruination. Benthams idea of pleasure then is similar to Nozicks pleasure of the Pleasure Machine. To Mill, this idea of pleasure is swines pleasure since animals can equally have sensation-related pleasures. Mill maintained that human pleasures obtain when human beings exercise human specific faculties (e.g., reasoning ability). Mill uses writing a poem, ...

Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project, says of loneliness, The more Ive learned about happiness, the more I have come to believe that loneliness is a terrible, common, and important obstacle [to happiness]. We have all experienced loneliness in our lives. We know that it is an experience that is not about being alone. We can be by ourselves in solitude and never feel lonely. Or we can be with a crowd of people and feel completely, totally alone in the world.. What Sparks Loneliness. If loneliness is not related to being alone, then what circumstances create this sad and sometimes debilitating feeling? How can we be proactive in avoiding these circumstances and enriching our emotional lives with greater happiness?. In a study conducted by the National Institute of Aging, researcher John T. Cacioppo notes: The main psychological difference between lonely and non-lonely people is that the former perceive stressful circumstances as threatening rather than challenging and cope passively ...
This time of year is all about saying thanks and expressing our gratitude for all that we have. But did you know that gratitude is directly related to happiness? Recently, my fabulous, almost 90-year-old grandma expressed her gratitude in such an amazing way. She was telling me sad stories about her friends-their various ailments, illnesses, sick spouses and family members. As she and her friends get older, she told me, the more she has realized that if everyone threw their keys into a bowl and could pick randomly to have different life experiences, shed still choose to take her own key back.. It was so nice to hear her say how grateful she is for her life and that looking back, she wouldnt change a thing.. Its really a simple equation-the more grateful you are, the happier you will be.. Having a positive outlook on life helps you with truly feeling grateful. But just saying you are grateful isnt enough-you truly have to feel it. Thats when the magic happens. So how do you make sure you ...
by Dee Ann Newbold Happiness-its a feeling we all desire regularly. Our active minds sometimes like to help us create different ideas on achieving happiness, but focusing on the moment, combined with a simple acupressure technique, can bring a feeling of contentment that anyone can tap into at any time.. Seeing the moment of right now brings perspective to what is really happening. Focusing on being in the moment can help reduce the stress and fear that comes from thinking about stories of the past or creating ideas of a future that hasnt yet happened. Looking for the silver lining can help to focus on positive outcomes-for example, if there is a driver cutting people off in traffic, instead of getting angry, think that perhaps the driver is helping to slow down traffic to safer speeds.. The acupressure point known as Pericardium-6 is about two and one-half inches below the crease of the wrist, about where a wristwatch is worn. With the palm of the hand is facing you, grab the Pericardium-6 ...
See ALL 2020 USA Retreats. Vipassana meditation is one of many meditation styles available at present time. I consider this technique to be the strongest and fastest of all the meditations in releasing your emotional pain, removing blocks and making someone happier. This technique was practiced and taught by Buddha (it is not a Buddhist religion practice) and brought back to life by S. N. Goenka 2000 years later. The Buddha brought to the world a wonderful path. He taught how to purify the mind, not just at the surface level as many other meditation practices do, but at the depth, at the root level. The teaching is not to convert people from one organized religion to another organized religion; it is to convert them from misery to happiness, from bondage to liberation. Mr. Goenka followed his souls call and organized Vipassana Association, which is very active in spreading this beautiful technique throughout the world.. Through the centuries Vipassana meditation have helped thousands of ...

Positive mood Positive mood can be caused by many different aspects of life as well as have certain effects on people as a whole. Good mood is usually considered a state without an identified cause; people cannot pinpoint exactly why they are in a good mood. People seem to experience a positive mood when they have a clean slate, have had a good night sleep, and feel no sense of stress in their life. There have been many studies done on the effect of positive emotion on the cognitive mind and there is speculation that positive mood can affect our minds in good or bad ways. Generally, positive mood has been found to enhance creative problem solving and flexible yet careful thinking.[4] Some studies have stated that positive moods let people think creatively, freely, and be more imaginative. Positive mood can also help individuals in situations in which heavy thinking and brainstorming is involved. In one experiment, individuals who were induced with a positive mood enhanced performance on the ...
This meta-analysis used 9 literature search strategies to examine 137 distinct personality constructs as correlates of subjective well-being (SWB). Personality was found to be equally predictive of life satisfaction, happiness, and positive affect, but significantly less predictive of negative affect. The traits most closely associated with SWB were repressive-defensiveness, trust, emotional stability, locus of control-chance, desire for control, hardiness, positive affectivity, private collective self-esteem, and tension. When personality traits were grouped according to the Big Five factors, Neuroticism was the strongest predictor of life satisfaction, happiness, and negative affect. Positive affect was predicted equally well by Extraversion and Agreeableness. The relative importance of personality for predicting SWB, how personality might influence SWB, and limitations of the present review are discussed.

Purpose This study assessed the long-term stability and instability of subjective well-being during post-school transition (i.e., transition from adolescence to young adulthood) and evaluated the determinants of transition stability. Methods Using two cohorts from a national representative longitudinal study, the Longitudinal Study of Australian Youth (N = 20991), latent profile analysis and latent transition analysis were conducted to examine transition patterns among subjective well-being profiles for youth from age 17 to 25. Multinomial logistic regressions were conducted to evaluate whether key socio-demographic variables were associated with transition stability. Results We identified: (1) three subjective well-being profiles: Low (30%), Moderate (50%), and High (20%); and (2) three major transition patterns among these subjective well-being profiles: stable, partially-stable, and unstable. The majority of youth had stable transition patterns during the transition from adolescence to adulthood.

The way out of the bleak economic outlook resulting from Covid, experts tell us, is to put ourselves in a gloomy mood and prepare for calamity.. They first said that we are quickly becoming a Myanmar, a military state, but when that prognosis started to be considered ludicrous, they have now changed their tactics to say that we are on the verge of becoming a Lebanon.. We are undoubtedly facing an economic crisis which is mainly linked to Covid and the resulting global and local slump. But, we are not far, far from the desperate situation in which Lebanon finds itself.. It is a country that has virtually no sources of income. There is therefore no point in dwelling on the fictitious comparison of Lebanon which is good for fools and their colleagues.. The way out of the current economic crisis is not to repeat doomsday scenarios or wrap ourselves in a shroud of disaster.. Thats the last thing a V-shaped pickup requires. Why aim for a V-shaped pickup, one might ask? This is because such a rebound ...

Couples therapy is similar to individual psychotherapy in that in both treatments the presenting symptom is unhappiness and dissatisfaction. In individual treatment the disappointment is about yourself and or about your job, your friends or your spouse. In the process of therapy you learn about the ways you might be contributing to your unhappiness by repeating old patterns that were developed as a child, but are not working for you as an adult.. In couples therapy, one or both of you are disappointed in the other. For example, a wife might complain: My husband doesnt understand me. Her husband might insist that he does understand and say: Nothing is good enough for her. Each of you wants something from the other you are not getting. The wife wants her husband to understand what she wants and needs without her having to tell him-- the way a mother has an intuitive sense of when an infant is hungry. He, on the other hand, may want her to say hes a good boy and instead shes telling him ...
In the transition from secondary to tertiary education, first-year students experience stress due to the academic, cultural, and social environment they must adapt to. This may negatively impact their subjective well-being, which in turn may negatively influence academic performance and increase the probability of dropping out. We report findings from a two-wave online study involving first-year students enrolled in a sociology course at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Leuven (Belgium). Students completed self-report questionnaires on sociodemographic background, subjective well-being, parental relationship quality, and personality, at the start (Time 1) and end (Time 2) of the first semester. 194 students (35%) completed measures at both times. Results show that subjective well-being decreased from the beginning to the end of the first semester. Well-being at university was positively, and feelings of depression negatively, related to subjective ...
