BACKGROUND: Hantavirus infections cause potentially life-threatening disease in humans world-wide. Infections with American hantaviruses may lead to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome characterised by severe cardiopulmonary distress with high mortality. Pulmonary involvement in European Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) infection has been reported, whereas knowledge of potential cardiac manifestations is limited. We aimed to comprehensively investigate cardiopulmonary involvement in patients with PUUV-infection.. METHODS: Twenty-seven hospitalised patients with PUUV-infection were examined with lung function tests, chest high-resolution CT (HRCT), echocardiography including speckle tracking strain rate analysis, ECG and measurements of cardiac biomarkers N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-ProBNP) and troponin T. Patients were re-evaluated after 3 months. Twenty-five age and sex-matched volunteers acted as controls for echocardiography data.. RESULTS: Two-thirds of the patients experienced ...

One of the complicating factors associated with remote sensing. In the semi-arid, like the Southwest US, the reading of the satellite does not fit well with the actual amount of vegetation. The image shows both the vegetation and soil bare, and depending on the the type of soil, you can get false readings, says Glass. Another factor that makes it difficult is the vegetation. I visited the Four Corners region during El Niño next in 1998 and 1999 and realize that the risk of disease does not depend on the vegetation, per se. Broad categories of vegetation for the high and low risk areas, but it was not simple matter said pinon juniper forests of high risk or low-lying salt bush low risk ...

AN OUTBREAK of hantavirus infection that hit southern Argentina in December seems to have been the first in which the virus was transmitted from person to person. Hantaviruses, which at first cause flu-like symptoms but can eventually kill by filling the sufferers lungs with fluid, are usually spread by rodents. People contract the disease when …
Treatment for HantavirusThe earlier Hantavirus infection is treated, the better the chances are for recovery. The disease can become life threatening within a few days of early symptoms, so its very important to get medical treatment right away. Patients are usually admitted to hospital and given oxygen to help them breathe.

Hantaviruses cause serious human diseases, Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), depending on the virus type. Currently no vaccine exists and the existing drug therapy for hantavirus infections is mainly supportive. MicroRNAs are short non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression. They play important roles in many biological processes, including cell differentiation, development and diseases like cancer. miRNAs have also been found to be involved in viral infections. The aim of this project was to investigate the miRNA expression during Hantavirus infection, and analyze the difference in miRNA expression between pathogenic hantaviruses (Hantaan virus), non-pathogenic (Prospect Hill virus), and mock-infected cells. Aberrantly expressed miRNAs could have potential as therapeutic targets.Focus assay was used to quantify the virus, and a stay in Berlin was organized to get instructions from Dr. Rang. However, the optimization of the assay was not ...
The rodent borne Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) causes haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in central and northern Europe. The number of cases has increased and northern Sweden has experienced large outbreaks in 1998 and 2006-2007 which raised questions regarding the level of immunity in the human population. A randomly selected population aged between 25 and 74 years from northern Sweden were invited during 2009 to participate in a WHO project for monitoring of trends and determinants in cardiovascular disease. Health and risk factors were evaluated and sera from 1,600 participants were available for analysis for specific PUUV IgG antibodies using a recombinant PUUV nucleocapsid protein ELISA. The overall seroprevalence in the investigated population was 13.4 %, which is a 50 % increase compared to a similar study only two decades previously. The prevalence of PUUV IgG increased with age, and among 65-75 years it was 22 %. More men (15.3 %) than women (11.4 %) were seropositive (p | 0.05). The identified
Amidst outrage of the Coronavirus spread, China has reported another outbreak of a deadly disease, Hantavirus.. In a report by Chinas English tabloid, Global Times, on Monday, revealed that a person from Yunnan Province died while on his way back to Shandong Province for work on a chartered bus.. He was tested positive for #hantavirus on Monday and other 32 people on bus were tested.. In a research, An orthohantavirus or Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread mainly by rodents and can cause varied disease syndromes in people worldwide. Infection with any hantavirus can produce hantavirus disease in people.. Hantaviruses in the Americas are known as New World hantaviruses and may cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Other hantaviruses, known as Old World hantaviruses, are found mostly in Europe and Asia and may cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).. Each hantavirus serotype has a specific rodent host species and is spread to people via inhalation of aerosolised virus ...
Puumala is the most common hantavirus serotype in Europe and is spread mainly by the red bank vole. Between 1 July 1992 and 31 January 1994, an outbreak of Puumala virus-induced nephropathia epidemica (NE) occurred in the Belgian Ardennes. Serologically confirmed cases (n = 41) were compared with two groups of asymptomatic seronegative controls. Risks identified included sighting of living rodents, exposure to rodent droppings, and trapping rodents during the 4 weeks preceding onset of symptoms. Activities during this 4-week period that presented the greatest risk were woodcutting, reopening of a nonaerated room, and strenuous physical effort. This is the first case-control study on risk factors for NE in Europe. In comparison with the American form of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which is spread by deer mice, professional activity appears to be a more important risk factor for acquisition of hantavirus in Europe.. ...
Since the recognition of hantavirus as the agent responsible for haemorrhagic fever in Eurasia in the 1970s and, 20 years later, the descovery of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in the Americas, the genus Hantavirus has been continually described throughout the World in a variety of wild animals. The diversity of wild animals infected with hantaviruses has only recently come into focus as a result of expanded wildlife studies. The known reservoirs are more than 80, belonging to 51 species of rodents, 7 bats (order Chiroptera) and 20 shrews and moles (order Soricomorpha). More than 80genetically related viruses have been classified within Hantavirus genus; 25 recognized as human pathogens responsible for a large spectrum of diseases in the Old and New World. In Brazil, where the diversity of mammals and especially rodents is considered one of the largest in the world, 9 hantavirus genotypes have been identified in 12 rodent species belonging to the genus Akodon, Calomys, Holochilus, Oligoryzomys,
We isolated Andes virus (formal name: Andes virus [ANDV], a species in the genus Hantavirus), from serum of an asymptomatic 10-year-old Chilean boy who died 6 days later of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). The serum was obtained 12 days after his grandmother died from HPS and 2 days before he became febrile. No hantavirus immunoglobulin (Ig) G or IgM antibodies were detected in the serum sample. After three blind passages, ANDV antigens were detected in Vero E6 cells by immunofluorescence assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and ANDV RNA was detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. A fragment of the virus genome showed 96.2% nucleotide identity with that of prototype ANDV. To our knowledge, this is the first isolation of any agent of hemorrhagic fever with HPS from a human and the first such isolation of hantavirus before symptoms of that syndrome or HPS began ...
Populations of bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) were monitored during a 4-year study in southern Belgium to assess the influence of agonistic behavior, reproductive status, mobility, and distribution of the rodents on the dynamics of Puumala virus (abbreviation: PUUV; genus: Hantavirus) infection. Concordance was high between data from serologic testing and results of viral RNA detection. Wounds resulting from biting or scratching were observed mainly in adult rodents. Hantavirus infection in adults was associated with wounds in the fall, i.e., at the end of the breeding season, but not in spring. In addition, sexually active animals were significantly more often wounded and positive for infection. Hantavirus infection was associated with higher mobility in juvenile and subadult males. Seroconversions observed 6 months apart also occurred more frequently in animals that had moved longer distances from their original capture point. During nonepidemic years, the distribution of infection was patchy,

Hantavirus infection is acute zoonosis clinically manifesting in two forms: Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), caused by Old World hantaviruses, and Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), caused by New World hantaviruses. Mild form of HFRS, Nephropaia epidemica (NE), is diagnosed in Tatarstan region of Russia, while HPS is endemic in Americas. Humans become infected by inhaling virus contaminated aerosol of urine and feces. The pathogenesis of NE and HPS remains largely unknown. Endothelial cells are identified as the main target; however no cell damage due to virus replication has been documented. There is no single factor identified to explain the complexity of the NE and HPS pathogenesis; therefore, it has been suggested that cytokine storm may play crucial role in disease presentation. In order to identify the serological markers distinguishing NE and HPS, team led by Dr Svetlana Khaiboullina (University of Nevada, Reno, USA) and Prof Albert Rizvanov (Kazan Federal University, ...
Recently two Sacramento County residents were hospitalized with Hantavirus infections. Though they contracted the virus in a neighboring county, it is important for Sacramento County residents to be cautious when engaging in rural outdoor activities such as hiking or camping. Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome is a severe, sometimes fatal, respiratory disease caused by infection with a Hantavirus that is carried by rodents. The virus is not transmitted person to person. ...
Hantaviruses infect human endothelial cells (ECs) and cause two diseases marked by vascular permeability defects: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Vascular permeability occurs in the absence of EC lysis suggesting that hantaviruses alter normal EC fluid barrier functions. Hantavirus-infected endothelial cells are hyper-responsive to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) which directs changes in EC adherens junctions and induces paracellular permeability. However, VEGF-directed responses are regulated by cellular microRNAs (miRNAs). The hantavirus nucleocapsid (N) protein binds cellular and viral RNA and reportedly co-localizes with P-bodies where miRNAs mature. These findings suggest that hantaviruses may modify miRNA regulation of EC protein expression. Here we analyzed miRNAs within endothelial cells infected by the HPS-causing Andes hantavirus (ANDV). The levels of 352 human miRNAs were evaluated within ANDV-infected ECs using ...
The confirmed case involves an individual who became ill after handling potentially infected mice that were captured in the wild as part of a research project at the school. The project has since been terminated. The patient has been hospitalized and is expected to make a full recovery.. Tippecanoe County health officials say a small number of individuals who worked in the lab and may have been exposed to the mice have been identified. Those individuals have been contacted and are being monitored for symptoms.. As of April 2014, 639 hantavirus cases have been reported to the CDC from 34 states since first recognized in 1993 in the US. This is the third hantavirus case reported from Indiana.. Hantavirus is a potentially life-threatening disease spread to humans by rodents that has symptoms similar to influenza.. Hantavirus is carried by rodents, especially deer mice. The virus is found in their urine and feces, but it does not make the animal sick.. It is believed that humans can get sick with ...
Press Release - Public Health Officer Dr. Rick Johnson) Although mice carry the hantavirus all year, this is the start of the season when humans typically begin activities that put them at risk of being exposed to the hantavirus. Spring cleaning activities, such as opening up closed buildings that have been unused overwinter, often provide habitats for deer mice and become sites for human exposure to the hantavirus. Although hantavirus infections are relatively rare, it is not unusual for us to have several cases per year in the Eastern Sierra. The risk of death is significant. Individuals cleaning areas where the mice may be present are well advised to heed the recommendations below in order to avoid exposure.. Hantavirus is carried by certain species of rats and mice, and especially the deer mouse, pictured above. Infected rodents shed the virus in their urine, droppings, and saliva. The virus can be transmitted to people when infected mouse urine, saliva, droppings, or nesting materials are ...
Out of 60 mice trapped and tested within the past month, seven were found with the hantavirus, said Dean Peterson, deputy director for San Mateo Countys Environmental Health. Five of the seven infected rodents were deer mice -- the most common host, which like to nest inside abandoned and boarded-up dwellings, such as summer cabins in rural settings. Last year in San Mateo County, two rodents out of 70 were infected with hantavirus, which is transmitted to humans through contact with the feces, urine or saliva of infected animals. If caught in time, however, patients can be hooked up to lung and oxygen machines until the infection clears -- generally within three to 45 days, according to Lucia Hui, public health biologist for the state Department of Health Services. Other Bay Area counties have been free of the disease, officials said. Since 1993, when hantavirus was first discovered in the United States in the Southwest, 19 Californians have contracted the disease, Hui said.
After two recent deaths in different states, hantavirus is slowly making its way across the United States. What is the deadly virus? Largely spread by rodents, hantavirus presents much like the flu. But, with a 40 percent death rate and a history in foreign countries, hantavirus shouldnt be taken lightly.
Hantaviruses cause life-threatening diseases in human worldwide. Rodents, insectivores and bats are known hantaviral reservoirs, but lack of complete genomic sequences of bat-borne hantaviruses impedes phylogenetic and evolutionary comparison with those of rodents and insectivores. Here, a novel bat-borne hantavirus, Laibin virus (LBV), has been identified in a black-bearded tomb bat in China. The complete genomic sequence shows that LBV is only distantly related to all previously known bat-borne hantaviruses.
Tick-borne infections are endemic in Switzerland with borreliosis being the most frequent one, followed by the vaccine-preventable tick-borne encephalitis and more rarely by anaplasmosis, rickettsioses and babesiosis. Short characteristics of these infections are presented. The main preventive measures for stays in endemic regions include not leaving forest tracks and wearing closely fitted clothes and shoes, impregnated with an insecticide. Following at-risk activities, clothes as well as the body should be searched for ticks and they have to be removed using a tick removing tool. The body area of the tick bite has to be observed and a physician visit is strongly urged in case of rising fever and/or of erythema migrans. Hantavirus infections: Nephropathia epidemica is a zoonosis caused by the Puumala type of hantavirus and transmission occurs by inhaling aerolized excretions of the bank vole. There is no known human to human transmission. The incidence of this infection varies in a cyclic ...
There is no specific treatment, cure, or vaccine for hantavirus infection. However, we do know that if infected individuals are recognized early and receive medical care in an intensive care unit, they may do better. In intensive care, patients are intubated and given oxygen therapy to help them through the period of severe respiratory distress.. The earlier the patient is brought in to intensive care, the better. If a patient is experiencing full distress, it is less likely the treatment will be effective.. Therefore, if you have been around rodents and have symptoms of fever, deep muscle aches, and severe shortness of breath, see your doctor immediately. Be sure to tell your doctor that you have been around rodents-this will alert your physician to look closely for any rodent-carried disease, such as HPS.. ...
In Europe, hantavirus disease can hardly be called an emerging zoonosis; it is rather a rediscovered disease. Since 1934 an epidemic condition with primarily renal involvement has been described in Sweden. Nowadays, hundreds to thousands of cases per year are registered in Fennoscandia, fluctuating with the numbers of the specific Arvicoline-rodent reservoir, the red bank vole, which carries the main European serotype, Puumala (PUU). In the early 1980s, the rat-transmitted serotype, Seoul (SEO), caused laboratory outbreaks throughout Europe, and recent reports also suggest sporadic, wild rat-spread hantavirus disease. In the Balkans, at least four serotypes are present simultaneously: PUU, SEO, the Korean prototype Hantaan (HTN) or HTN-like types, and Dobrava, the latter causing a mortality rate of up to 20%. Moreover, recent genotyping studies have disclosed several PUU-like genotypes spread in Europe and/or Russia by other genera of the Arvicoline-rodent subfamily: Tula, Tobetsu, Khabarovsk, ...
Unlike COVID-19, hantavirus is not mainly transmitted through the respiratory system, but a patients excreta and blood can be contagious, virologists said, after a Chinese worker died of the hantavirus on Monday.
Andes virus (ANDV) is a member of the genus Hantavirus. Little is known about structure and function of the hantaviral L protein. Sequence alignments revealed a putative RNA-dependent RNA polymerase domain in the center and an endonuclease at the N terminus. Studying hantaviral L proteins is difficult, because recombinant L protein expression in mammalian cells is very ineffective. Deletion analysis revealed that the N terminus determine the low-expression phenotype. This work demonstrates that ANDV L protein expression can be rescued upon mutation of catalytic amino acids and further conserved residues of the putative endonuclease domain. In addition, wild-type ANDV L rather than expressible L mutants suppressed the level of mRNA and reduces protein expression. Expressible ANDV L mutants colocalized with the cellular processing (P) bodies, ANDV N and NSs protein, but not with the glycoprotein Gc. This work suggests that ANDV L protein possesses an endonuclease at the N terminus suppressing the ...

Some 10,000 people who stayed in tent cabins at Yosemite National Park this summer may be at risk for the deadly rodent-borne hantavirus.
SAN FRANCISCO - Yosemite National Park has begun trapping and killing deer mice whose growing numbers may have helped create the conditions that led to a hantavirus outbreak that has infected eight park visitors, killing three, public health officials sa
So far this year in Colorado, one person has died and two others have been sickened from Hantavirus. Its a respiratory disease carried by deer mice and transmitted by inhaling dust contaminated with the virus.
The hantavirus has been reported within many species of rodents and man worldwide. It has been confirmed that an antigenically-related group of viruses is causing the HVDs that are being reported in different parts of the world. These agents also share similarities in their epidemiological and ecological characteristics. Adult rodents show persistent infection but there are no clinical manifestations and they secrete virus for prolonged periods. A viraemia develops in the rodent after innoculation and it is then that the virus is disseminated throughout the body. The virus is found in the lungs, spleen and kidneys for long periods in the rodent, if not its whole life. Horizantal transmission between rodents is greatly facilitated by saliva. It is expected that man gets infected through the respiratory route via the aerosols of virus particles excreted by rodents in their lungs, saliva, urine and faeces. Rodent bites have also led to reported cases of transmission. Horizontal transmission among ...

Yosemite National Park authorities have doubled the estimate of those likely infected in a recent outbreak of the hantavirus, a deadly pulmonary disease commonly carried by mice and other rodents.
Many people who stayed in the park this summer have complained of what they considered a lack of information from Yosemite officials. Park spokespeople have said the initial notifications went to the group of visitors considered most at risk. Spread through urine, droppings or saliva of infected rodents, hantavirus takes one to six weeks before causing symptoms in humans, officials said. The disease generally is transmitted when people come in contact with an enclosed area that has been infested by mice.. The disease is rare - 587 cases were diagnosed nationwide from 1993 to 2011, of which about one-third were fatal, according to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But the cases at Yosemite are more unusual. Public health authorities said they had not heard of more than one case of the disease in the same location within a year.. News of the outbreak has rattled visitors, who travel across the globe to the national park. Park rangers have fielded thousands of calls through ...

Infections are found on or in just about every product and also setting in the world from dirt to water to air. Theyre essentially located anywhere there are cells to affect. Viruses getting developed to contaminate every form of life, from animal to plant as well as from fungi to microorganisms. Nevertheless, infections often be rather particular concerning just what sort of cells they affect. Plant infections are not outfitted to affect animal cells, as an example, though a certain plant infection might infect a number of associated plants. Often, a virus may affect one animal as well as do no harm, but reason chaos when it gets into a special however closely sufficient related creature. For example, the Hantavirus is carried by deer mice without much noticeable result on the rodents. But if Hantavirus enters a person, it creates an impressive and also frequently fatal disease marked by extreme bleeding.Single-Minded Objective Infections exist for one purpose only: to recreate. A virus is an extremely tiny infectious agent that is only able to live inside a cell. Basically, viruses are composed of just two parts. The outer part is a protective shell made of protein. This shell is often surrounded by another protective layer or envelope, made of protein or lipids (fats). The inner part is made of genetic material, either RNA or DNA. A virus does not have any other structures (called organelles) that living cells have, like a nucleus or mitochondria. These organelles are the tiny organs that maintain a cells metabolism (life processes). A virus has no metabolism at all. Because a virus lacks organelles, it cannot reproduce by itself. To reproduce, a virus invades a cell within the body of a human or other creature, called the host. Each type of virus has particular types of host creatures and host cells that it will invade successfully. Once within the host cell, the virus uses the cells own organelles to produce more viruses. In essence, the virus forces the cell to ...
