Bone mineral density scans of the left proximal femur (total hip) and anterior-posterior lumbar spine were obtained by use of DXA, at Baseline, at end of therapy, and 1 year (48 weeks) after end of therapy. In case of abnormality or surgery of the left hip, the right hip was to be used. If both hips were affected, the participant was not eligible for DXA. Vertebrae L1 to L4 had to be completely scanned. At least 3 vertebrae had to be free of any abnormalities potentially interfering with DXA analysis (eg, fractures, large osteophytes), otherwise the participant was not eligible for DXA. Baseline was defined at Week 0. Change from Baseline was calculated by subtracting the Baseline value from the individual post-baseline values. Percentage change from Baseline = (change from Baseline / Baseline value) * 100. Least square means and 95% confidence interval has been presented ...

Three main factors play an essential role in the development of chronic hand eczema: excessive contact with water and irritants (cumulative-toxic stress), contact with allergens, and atopic diathesis, which has a genetic component. Individual hand eczema types are identified and named according to the main catalysts involved, i.e. cumulative-toxic, contact-allergenic, or atopic hand eczema. Activities that are stressful for the skin or involve repeated, excessive contact with water or skin-irritating substances at work or home can cause damage to the skins protective abilities and increase the chances of inflammation. This also applies to prolonged wearing of protective rubber gloves and similar materials, since sweating occurs within these gloves. Disturbance of the skins protective barrier also facilitates penetration by allergenic substances and promotes the development of contact dermatitis. Contact allergies play a very important role in the development of hand eczema. If the hand is ...
Although hand dermatitis is known to affect nursing students worldwide, the prevalence among their Australian counterparts has not been elucidated and the relative contribution of tropical environments is unclear. Therefore, we conducted the first investigation of hand dermatitis among 232 female, undergraduate nurses in tropical Australia using a previously validated methodology. Hand dermatitis prevalence rose from 10.8% in the first year to 27.4% by the third year and averaged 18.5% across all three grades. Pre-existing atopic dermatitis caused a 7.8-fold risk increase during logistic regression analysis (odds ratio [OR] 7.8, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.0-21.1, P , 0.0001). Overall, this study suggests that hand dermatitis is less common among tropical Australian nursing students than their counterparts around the world. The identification of atopic dermatitis as a hand dermatitis risk factor was, however, consistent with previous research conducted in non-tropical areas.. ...

Hand eczema is common and has an adverse impact on the lives of patients. There is a need for population-based surveys on the pharmacoepidemiological aspects, quality of life and impact of socioeconomic factors in hand eczema. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate these factors. A questionnaire-based nationwide survey of health was performed, including questions on hand eczema, use of pharmaceuticals and socioeconomic factors. Quality of life was estimated with the generic instrument Short Form 36 (SF-36). The questionnaire was sent to 7,985 persons (age range 18-84 years), response rate 61.1% (n=4,875). The 1-year prevalence of hand eczema in the study population was 7.5%. In this group, quality of life was lower. All dimensions of SF-36 were affected, most markedly general health and those dimensions reporting on mental health. In the group with self-reported hand eczema, 51% reported using topical pharmaceuticals. Hand eczema was more common among women (9.1%, n=2,630) than ...

We?re going to talk about Occupational Skin Disease, which we will call OSD. OSD is any abnormality of the skin that is either caused by, or aggravated by, the work we do. It is one of the most common health problems in the workplace. OSD accounts for nearly 10% of all days lost from work-related causes. (The highest, at 30%, is from muscle and bone problems.). OSD can be difficult to diagnose because there are so many causes of skin abnormalities. Infectious conditions, such as measles, can be passed from one person to another. OSD is not infectious so it can?t be caught or passed on.
Occupational skin disease (OSD) is the most common non trauma-related occupational illness and has a significant impact on food safety.

Background Occupational exposure to skin irritants, in particular to water, is an important risk factor for hand eczema. Objectives To assess occupational skin exposure to water in the general population. Methods As part of a public health survey in Stockholm, Sweden, 18 267 gainfully employed individuals aged 18-64 years completed a questionnaire with previously validated questions regarding occupational skin exposure to water. Results Altogether 16% reported exposure to water for (1/2) h or more a day, and 13% reported exposure to water more than 10 times a day. Furthermore, 7% reported water exposure of more than 2 h and 6% of more than 20 times a day. Women reported more water exposure than men and many female-dominated occupations were seen to comprise water exposure. Women were also more exposed than men within the same jobs. Young adults were more exposed than older. A total of 18% were employed in high-risk occupations for hand eczema. Fifty-nine per cent of individuals employed in ...

It is estimated that more than 13 million workers in the United States are potentially exposed to chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin. Dermal exposure to hazardous agents can result in a variety of occupational diseases and disorders, including occupational skin diseases (OSD) and systemic toxicity. Historically, efforts to control workplace exposures to hazardous agents have focused on inhalation rather than skin exposures. As a result, assessment strategies and methods are well developed for evaluating inhalation exposures in the workplace; standardized methods are currently lacking for measuring and assessing skin exposures.

Smoking has been identified as a risk factor for atopic dermatitis and hand eczema, but less is known about the association of exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) with hand eczema. The study aimed to investigate the association of SHS exposure with hand eczema and atopic dermatitis in a group of adolescents. We conducted a cross-sectional study among first-year college students. SHS exposure was measured by a self-administered questionnaire. Skin diseases were diagnosed by dermatologists in the field survey. Mixed models were used to estimate the associations. A total of 20,129 participants that underwent skin examination and a questionnaire survey were included in the analyses. The prevalence rates of atopic dermatitis and hand eczema were 3.86% and 3.35%, respectively. Crude and adjusted estimates consistently showed that exposure to SHS was significantly associated with atopic dermatitis and hand eczema in a dose-response manner. Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder mediated minimal or no effect

Sweets syndrome (SS), or acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis is a skin disease characterized by the sudden onset of fever, an elevated white blood cell count, and tender, red, well-demarcated papules and plaques that show dense infiltrates by neutrophil granulocytes on histologic examination. The syndrome was first described in 1964 by Robert Douglas Sweet. It was also known as Gomm-Button disease in honour of the first two patients Sweet diagnosed with the condition. Sweet described a disease with four features: fever; leukocytosis; acute, tender, red plaques; and a papillary dermal infiltrate of neutrophils. This led to the name acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis. Larger series of patients showed that fever and neutrophilia are not consistently present.[citation needed] The diagnosis is based on the two constant features, a typical eruption and the characteristic histologic features;[citation needed] thus the eponym Sweets syndrome is used. It is commonly assumed that hand eczema is linked to general atopic eczema, but a new study has found that hand eczema can exist independently from atopic eczema.. The new study, published in the January edition of the British Journal of Dermatology, has found that contrary to common the common assumption that hand eczema is linked to general atopic eczema, some hand eczema exists with no link to atopic eczema but with a link to filaggrin mutations in the skin.. Filaggrin is a protein that binds keratin fibres to epidermal cells and helps maintain a healthy skin barrier. Mutations in levels of Filaggrin production can be linked to hand eczema, without the presence atopic eczema.. [quote]What is commonly labelled as hand eczema is characterised by splits, itching, redness and lesions on the hands caused by very dry skin. Occupational skin diseases are ranked among the top five occupational diseases in many countries.[2] Occupational skin diseases and conditions are generally caused by chemicals and having wet hands for long periods while at work. Eczema is by far the most common, but urticaria, sunburn and skin cancer are also of concern.[3] Contact dermatitis due to irritation is inflammation of the skin which results from a contact with an irritant.[4] It has been observed that this type of dermatitis does not require prior sensitization of the immune system. There have been studies to support that past or present atopic dermatitis is a risk factor for this type of dermatitis.[5] Common irritants include detergents, acids, alkalies, oils, organic solvents and reducing agents.[6] The acute form of this dermatitis develops on exposure of the skin to a strong irritant or caustic chemical. This exposure can occur as a result of accident at a workplace. The irritant reaction starts to increase in its intensity ...

Whenever you hear the term treatment, you instantly affiliate the word to some technique - tested or untested - which eradicates a clinical condition that certain is struggling with. In acute or short-term conditions for example infections, treatments may support that expectation. On the other hand, when youre handling a chronic condition that is likely to be permanent, cure cant meet this expectation of completely eradicating the condition out of your existence. Under this angle, cure is just a way to manage the signs and symptoms of the condition to be able to live as easily as you possibly can.. Eczema is among the many chronic problems that affect mankind. Hence, an eczema treatment cannot treat the problem itself. However, an eczema treatment can treat the signs and symptoms that go together with it. Which means that every time your eczema flares up and results in rashes appearing in your body, youre playing not one other choice but to make use of eczema treatments every time. Eczema ...
