Our previous studies showed that glycerol fermentation by Hafnia alvei AD27 strain was accompanied by formation of high quantities of lactate. The ultimate aim of this work was the elimination of excessive lactate production in the 1,3-propanediol producer cultures. Group II intron-mediated deletion of ldh (lactate dehydrogenase) gene in an environmental isolate of H. alvei AD27 strain was conducted. The effect of the Δldh genotype in H. alvei AD27 strain varied depending on the culture medium applied. Under lower initial glycerol concentration (20 gL-1), lactate and 1,3-propanediol production was fully abolished, and the main carbon flux was directed to ethanol synthesis. On the other hand, at higher initial glycerol concentrations (40 gL-1), 1,3-propanediol and lactate production was recovered in the recombinant strain. The final titers of 1,3-propanediol and ethanol were similar for the recombinant and the WT strains, while the Δldh genotype displayed significantly decreased lactate titer. ...

Here we report application of an electric discharge assisted mechanical milling (EDAMM) technique to synthesize various functional oxides. In this work we studied the effect of electric discharge milling conditions such as AC and DC discharges in helium, argon, nitrogen and oxygen on synthesis of complex oxide MgAl2O4 (i) from pre-mixed oxides as starting materials and (ii) from elemental powders by oxidation in oxygen plasma. Also a compound BaLa2Ti4O12 and CaCu3Ti4O12 was synthesized from elemental oxides by EDAMM and EDAMM and subsequent annealing, respectively. All samples were characterized using X-ray analysis. SEM was performed on MgAl2O4 samples and DTA on nanostructural CaCu3Ti4O12. By using EDAMM, single phase multi-element oxides can be formed in as little as 0.1% of the processing time required in conventional solid-state techniques.

I certainly wish there were more, or more importantly, the ones at Penn Station were working when I needed to use them. The other thing I dislike about the machines, and this really is a small thing to quibble over (but also a small thing to fix): the slot where you put in your credit card only accepts cards one way, and its not marked. Coliform bacteria are defined as rod-shaped Gram-negative non-spore forming and motile or non-motile bacteria which can ferment lactose with the production of acid and gas when incubated at 35-37°C. They are a commonly used indicator of sanitary quality of foods and water. Coliforms can be found in the aquatic environment, in soil and on vegetation; they are universally present in large numbers in the feces of warm-blooded animals. While coliforms themselves are not normally causes of serious illness, they are easy to culture, and their presence is used to indicate that other pathogenic organisms of fecal origin may be present. A thermal barrier coating composition is provided. The composition has a base oxide, a primary stabilizer, and at least two additional cationic oxide dopants. Preferably, a pair of group A and group B defect cluster-promoting oxides is used in conjunction with the base and primary stabilizer oxides. The new thermal barrier coating is found to have significantly lower thermal conductivity and better sintering resistance. In preferred embodiments, the base oxide is selected from zirconia and hafnia. The aim of this work is to show the basic elements of the verification of the methods applied in the microbiological laboratory when introducing the original method prior to release into routine work. The results show that the method is selective because it shows great ability to identify and count the microorganisms studied. Medium Chromocult Coliform Agar (CCA) is suitable for the isolation of coliform bacteria (C. freundii) and E. coli.
