The majority of Roma population lives in inadequate living conditions, to which poor hygiene, poor diet, smoking, illegal drug consumption, and lack of physical activity are linked. These factors directly increase risks to their overall health. Besides limited access to healthcare, Roma population have also shown to have trouble communicating with healthcare staff and poor recognition of disease signs and consequently limited use of preventive measures. By developing and testing programmes, the project SORO should contribute to narrowing the gap in the health status between the Roma and general population ...
The objective of this study was to describe transmission chains of measles observed in Poland during 2008-2009. A decade ago, the incidence of measles in Poland declined and approached one case per million inhabitants one of the World Health Organization's criteria for measles elimination. Following a period of very few reported measles cases (2003 to 2005), an increase in incidence was observed in 2006. Since then, the incidence has constantly exceeded one case per million inhabitants. Of 214 measles cases reported in 2008 and 2009 in Poland, 164 (77%) were linked to 19 distinct outbreaks, with 79% of cases belonging to the Roma ethnic group. Outbreaks in the non-Roma Polish population had different dynamics compared to those in the Roma population. On average, measles outbreaks in Roma communities involved 10 individuals, seven of whom were unvaccinated, while outbreaks in the non-Roma Polish population involved five individuals, half of whom were incompletely vaccinated. The majority of

Systematic analyses of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) profiles in different populations may increase the efficiency of bone marrow donor selection and help reconstructing human peopling history. We typed HLA-A, -B, and -DRB1 allele groups in two bone marrow donor cohorts of 2402 Hungarians and 186 Hungarian Gypsies and compared them with several Central-European, Spanish Gypsy, and Indian populations. Our results indicate that different European Gypsy populations share a common origin but diverged genetically as a consequence of founder effect and rapid genetic drift, whereas other European populations are related genetically in relation to geography. This study also suggests that while HLA-A accurately depicts the effects of genetic drift, HLA-B, and -DRB1 conserve more signatures of ancient population relationships, as a result of balancing selection ...

Roma, an ethnic group of traditionally itinerant people who originated in northern India but live in modern times worldwide, principally in Europe. Most Roma speak some form of Romany, a language closely related to the modern Indo-European languages of northern India, as well as the major language of the country in which they live.
A median-joining (MJ) network of haplogroup H1a-M82 has demonstrated the sharing of identical Indian specific Y-chromosomal lineages between all Romani populations including Malaysian Indians as well as the Vlax Romanies (Fig. 2A and B). This common lineage of haplogroup H1a-M82 represents a common descent from a single ancestor providing a strong genetic link to the ancestral geographical origin of the proto-Gypsies [1]. According to Sengupta et al. [24] the age of microsatellite variation within haplogroup H1 in Indian populations is more than 9.7 +/- 4.4 ky. This time was estimated to be 992 years (95%CI 425-3472) in the Romani populations investigated by Gresham et al. [1] suggesting the Indian H1 haplogroup is the ancestral one ...

One of the most enduring persecutions against the Romani people was their enslavement. Slavery was widely practiced in medieval Europe, including the territory of present-day Romania from before the founding of the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia in the 13th-14th century.[211][page needed] Legislation decreed that all the Romani living in these states, as well as any others who immigrated there, were classified as slaves.[212] Slavery was gradually abolished during the 1840s and 1850s.[213][page needed] The exact origins of slavery in the Danubian Principalities are not known. There is some debate over whether the Romani people came to Wallachia and Moldavia as free men or were brought as slaves. Historian Nicolae Iorga associated the Roma peoples arrival with the 1241 Mongol invasion of Europe and considered their slavery as a vestige of that era, in which the Romanians took the Roma as slaves from the Mongols and preserved their status to use their labor. Other historians believe ...

Congenital Cataracts Facial Dysmorphism Neuropathy (CCFDN) syndrome is a complex developmental disorder of autosomal recessive inheritance. To date, CCFDN has been found to occur exclusively in patients of Roma (Gypsy) ethnicity; over 100 patients have been diagnosed. Developmental abnormalities include congenital cataracts and microcorneae, primary hypomyelination of the peripheral nervous system, impaired physical growth, delayed early motor and intellectual development, mild facial dysmorphism and hypogonadism. Para-infectious rhabdomyolysis is a serious complication reported in an increasing number of patients. During general anaesthesia, patients with CCFDN require careful monitoring as they have an elevated risk of complications. CCFDN is a genetically homogeneous condition in which all patients are homozygous for the same ancestral mutation in the CTDP1 gene. Diagnosis is clinical and is supported by electrophysiological and brain imaging studies. The major differential diagnosis is Marinesco

This second volume is concerned with the changes that are needed to improve the matching of health services to the needs of these groups. Its chapters analyse work on cultural competence in the USA and Europe, as well as the use of interpreters and cultural mediators to overcome linguistic and cultural barriers. Other topics covered include user involvement, services for unaccompanied minors and Roma communities, the relation between NGOs and mainstream services and the incorporation of non-Western approaches in Western health care. The final section of the book examines the health aspects of irregular migration in the Mediterranean region, viewed in the context of the complex political, legal and human rights issues that this phenomenon raises ...
The year wasnt even half over when I first heard Cate Le Bons Reward, but I knew it would be hard to top, and it did indeed prove impossible. The Welsh singer had been living in Los Angeles, but for this record she wrote the songs while living alone in Englands Lake District, and it shows. At times on previous records, her eccentricity seemed to overwhelm, but on Reward, its more, uh, rewarding. Especially great is the video for Home to You, which was filmed among the Roma community in Slovakia. Her angular riffs dont seem accessible at first, and then, weeks later, theyve become earworms. Delightfully odd earworms. Theres also a real warmth here that makes these songs comforting.. Sharon Van Etten has had a busy few years. She began acting (in the sadly-departed Brit Marling series The OA), finished a degree in psychology, got married and had a baby, and moved from New York to Los Angeles. She also completely reworked her sound for Remind Me Tomorrow, adding layers of synths in place ...
Living in the Covid pandemic lockdown in Ireland, one learns to appreciate ones health, to be grateful not to be lying in bed, in an ICU Yes its been an eye opener…….. What I miss • meeting people for breakfast Saturday mornings in a café. • being in solidarity with non-Irish nationals working on the front line, in the meat plants, being willing to listen • being in solidarity with people from, the Roma community, as they wait in line, at soup kitchens. Then comes spiritual reflection, being able to be with ourselves, alone, reflecting on the words of the Gospel….. People are anxious, worried about members of their families, not being able to visit, just waving to their loved ones, as they are behind doors. We have to have positive thinking, taking care of our health, minds, keeping spirits up. Other concerns:. • how we speak about the ...
Four cities, four different contexts, four different approaches, but one common objective: to become more resilient through the inclusion of third country nationals in their urban resilience plans.. We are talking about the four pilot cities of AMARE-eu. For each one, we have produced a video, to tell how they are tackling the challenges for resilience.. Catanzaro, located in the South of Italy, is trying to create a sustainable urban development, based on an inclusive approach, involving both the non-native citizens and a traditional Roma community. In particular, Catanzaro is trying to create a synergy between the Civil Protection, very active in a city with a high hydrogeological and seismic risk, and the Immigration sectors dealing directly with non-native communities.. ...

These two women have found for us the most amazing interpreter, Zsuzsi Zsusa who is knowledgeable about all things Hungarian. Describing herself as a Hungarian Central European mix there doesnt seem to be anything she doesnt know (at least something about). She speaks Swedish, English and a little German; without her on the team we wouldnt be able to talk and relate to the Roma people we are trying to reach. She lives in the VIIIth District and has such an engaging way with her that people are immediately put at heir ease. Today she confessed that she talks so much sometimes her jaw aches! Oh really ...

Photographic Workshop entitled Tell the photography took place in June 2009 at two locations: in Kamenci (mentors Luka Cjuha and Borut Krajnc) and at the premises of the Elementary School by Louis Adamic in Grosuplje (mentors Joco Žnidaršič and Jure Eržen). Participants were the children from the village Kamenci and the children from Roma settlements around Grosuplje. The participants of photographic workshops (including 18 children) are with the consent of their parents and elders led by students Yulia Sardelić and Ana Podvršič. At the first meeting, the mentors first briefly presented the work with the camera and the basics of photography and photojournalism. This was followed by practical work, shooting at selected locations. After completion of the workshop work, the participants together with trainers assessed the work done and got further instructions ...
Aluminium mining in Baphlimali, India, has caused environment devastation and has wrecked the lifestyle of thousands of Adivasis. For centuries, Adivasi communities like the Paraja, Jhodia, Penga and Kondh have been living amidst the Baphlimali foothills. For generations they have lived in harmony with nature. They lived through rain fed subsistence agriculture of millet, cereals, pulses, rice and collection of non-timber forest produce, e.g. nuts, roots and fruit Domestic animals like sheep, goat, cow and buffalo used to be a very important source of income too. With widespread mining activities and linked deforestation, they have lost access to forest products and to the much needed pasture land in the vicinity of their villages. This affects everyone but one tribal leader, Sumani Jhodia comments particularly on the impact on women who have an increase in domestic work hours since the disappearance of the forests, shrubs, bushes and contamination of water sources resulting from bauxite ...
Facial dysmorphism described in the CCFDN seems to become more obvious during late childhood and appears to be more prominent in males than in females.1 Indeed, in family 2, the male patient was the only affected person presenting dysmorphic features.. Concerning ocular abnormalities, cataracts in MSS are usually congenital but may also occur during childhood. No other developmental abnormality of the eye has been reported in MSS, as opposed to microcornea which appears to be a major clinical and probably a diagnostic criterion of CCFDN.. Moreover MSS and CCFDN syndromes differ regarding myopathic changes. Progressive muscle weakness and muscle atrophy were reported to be among the cardinal signs of MSS.12 Most muscle biopsy reports have described myopathic changes including variation in muscle fibre size, rimmed vacuoles, necrotic and regenerative fibres, numerous internal nuclei, nuclear degeneration, endomysial fibrosis, and fatty replacement.12-17 Sewry et al13 suggested that a unique dense ...

At least 30 mutations in the MFSD8 gene have been found to cause CLN7 disease. This condition typically starts in early childhood with the loss of previously acquired skills (developmental regression), recurrent seizures (epilepsy), muscle twitches (myoclonus), difficulty coordinating movements (ataxia), speech impairment, and vision loss. Mental functioning and motor skills (such as sitting and walking) decline with age. Individuals with CLN7 disease typically do not survive past their teens.. MFSD8 gene mutations that cause CLN7 disease likely lead to the production of a protein with altered structure or function. One MFSD8 gene mutation is responsible for almost all cases of CLN7 disease in the Roma population of the Czech Republic. This mutation replaces the protein building block (amino acid) threonine with the amino acid lysine at position 294 in the MFSD8 protein (written as T294K). A variety of other mutations cause the condition in other populations.. It is unclear how an altered MFSD8 ...
Bulgarian meat is among the most contaminated with antibiotics in the EU according to the seventh annual report of the European Medicines Agency on the sale of antibiotics for animals in 30 European countries in 2015. According to the report in Bulgaria, 1 kg of live weight averages 121 milligrams antibiotic, making it the eighth highest European antibiotic rating.. After this news circulated around agencies yesterday, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) did not comment but in the evening they came out with an official position that there is no excessive use of antibiotics in Bulgarian farms, that we do not provide prophylactic antibiotics to the animals, and that contaminated meat does not reach consumers at all. This position is understandable given that if the Bulgarian Food and Drug Administration acknowledges that Bulgarian meat is packed with medication there will be serious consequences for the agency itself, for the producers and hence for the market. There is a quarantine period for ...

Bulgarian head of state President Rossen Plevneliev has called on the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church to reconsider its decision to honour former monarch Simeon Saxe-Coburg in private and public liturgies as Tsar of the Bulgarians.. Critical media coverage of the decision by the churchs governing body said that the church appeared to think that Bulgaria had two heads of state.. Saxe-Coburg became king of Bulgaria in 1943 after the sudden death of his father, Boris III. A post-World War 2 referendum under communist domination abolished the monarcy, and the countrys first democratic constitution in 1991 made no mention of a monarchy.. After the fall of communism, Saxe-Coburg returned to the country and was elected prime minister in 2001, with his government serving a single term before participating in a socialist-led tripartite coalition government from 2005 to 2009.. On May 2, Plevneliev was among dignitaries at church ceremonies in the ancient former capital of Pliska as the ...

Magda Matache, Guest Editor: Romani Global Diaspora: Implementation of the Right to Health, in Health and Human Rights, December 2017. The Health and Human Rights Journal is calling for papers for a special section on Romani Global Diaspora: Implementation of the Right to Health to be published in December 2017. The special section aims to examine the implementation of the right to health in the case of Romani populations across the globe.. In this context, we draw readers attention to a new report from the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC). Titled Coercive and Cruel, the report details the appalling violation of Romani womens health and human rights in the Czech Republic. It reveals that for 50 years Romani women have been subjected to sterilisation without their consent, and often without being informed that such an operation would be performed on them.. Involuntary sterilisations are a flagrant violation of human rights, human dignity, and of the physical and mental integrity of the ...
G. vaginalis was most frequently present in samples obtained from Bulgarian women in age range 21-30 years.. For achieving the goal of this investigation, the Nugents score22 was taken as gold standard and the results from the other methods were compared with this score. As already published by other authors it was preferable to recommend the use of Ison/Hay method,23 because in that way we could evaluate vaginal smears in five more clearly distinguished grades with better segregation of the vaginal microflora.9,26,27 Using Gram straining in this study we detected high frequency of BV in symptomatic subjects (57.22%), in contrast to asymptomatic Bulgarian women (13.69%). We could also prove TVF in 11.09% of symptomatic and in 17.01% of asymptomatic subjects. Our results for TVF frequency are in unison with previously reported data in other studies from France and Australia.3,28 BV frequency in the present study with Bulgarian women is similar to that found in Nigerian women, with a slightly ...

In the early years after its independence, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia scrambled to maintain and reform its health systems. It was generally successful. Immunization rates dipped for a while but have since climbed to 90 per cent, due in part to UNICEFs regular provision of vaccines. Yet certain population groups and health-care issues still require extra attention. Today, UNICEF is working with the Government on strategies to fill these gaps. Maternal and child health care is one such concern. While the country has relatively low rates of maternal and infant mortality, a 2009 study supported by UNICEF found acute disparities in access to maternal and child health care, especially among rural residents and Roma communities. Islamophobia can be defined as the fear of or prejudiced viewpoint towards Islam, Muslims and matters pertaining to them. Whether it takes the shape of daily forms of racism and discrimination or more violent forms, Islamophobia is a violation of human rights and a threat to social cohesion. But, just as importantly, they are also concerned by the general rise in discrimination and xenophobia, whether it be active or passive. At this seminar held in Budapest in June 2004, Islamophobia was discussed within the wider context of racism and discrimination in Europe, in new and old forms.
