Q: Ive not too long ago adopted one feminine and two male guinea pigs. They are throughout 2 months outdated. Im ready for the boys to be the best weight to have them fastened. Im too scared to have the feminine fastened in case she is already pregnant. Once the males are fastened, will they depart my little feminine alone? They at the moment comply with her far and wide. I wish to add one other feminine to the group as soon as the boys are fastened, however I dont need to do this if its going to trigger fights. They have greater than sufficient room to roam and play of their two-level, split-level "home" with loads of hidey-holes.. A: Having a male guinea pig fastened is not going to change his pure propensity to need to mate with the feminine. It will solely insure that there isnt any conception after the act. In the scenario you describe, having just one feminine who will cycle each 17 days means she is not going to solely have the undesirable advances of 1 male, however she might be ...
A total of 20 healthy adult male guinea pigs were used in this study to investigate the anatomical, histological and morphometrical characteristics of the kidneys, ureter and urinary bladder. The gross anatomical study showed that the right kidney had a bean shape with reddish pink color whereas the left kidney had a heart shape. The renal cortex appeared darker than medulla with reddish brown color, while the medulla was pale in color. The mean thickness of cortex was more than that of medulla in both left and right kidneys and the ratio of cortex to medulla was 1.06: 1 in both kidneys. The mean length of right ureter was 10.3±0.62 cm while the mean length of left ureter was shorter. The filled urinary bladder appeared as a pear-shaped hollow sac situated in the pelvic cavity and only the rounded cranial part of bladder was expanded. Four histological regions of renal tubules were found in kidney. The Proximal convolutes tubule is first longest and coiled segment of renal tubules which originate from

Here are some of the top reasons guinea pigs are wonderful pets:. 1. They are cute Kids are drawn to guinea pigs because they are so cute and cuddly! They can be active, but they can also be a cuddly friend in your lap, and most of them dont bite. I dont think I have ever met someone who didnt think our guinea pigs are cute. We even taught our guinea pigs to squeal for food when we whistle.. 2. They are a good size. Guinea pigs are a great size, and they dont run away like smaller animals (such as hamsters). They are comfortable to hold in your lap, and usually dont run off. (Most guinea pigs run when you go to pick them up, but that is normal). We have owned numerous hamsters, and they are always on the move and a bit fragile compared to guinea pigs, and we found that their small size did not make them cuddly.. 3. They are easy to care for. Guinea pigs are fairly low maintenance, and you can even leave them home for a few days if you go away for a weekend. They do need a roomy cage, but ...
Data are presented on the formation of a linoleic acid oxygenation product under basal conditions by guinea pig alveolar macrophages (AM). Under non-stimulated conditions 20 × 106 AM released about 1 nmol 9-hydroxylinoleic acid (9-HODE) during a 15 min incubation. Surprisingly, guinea pigs are not related to pigs, nor did they originate in Guinea. Though they no longer exist in the wild, guinea pigs are cavies indigenous to South America, with fossil records dating back to 9,000 B.C. Domestication began around 5,000 B.C. for food by tribes in the Andean region and remain a popular food source in South America today. There are 13 recognized breeds of guinea pig, and each is characterized by differences in hair color, texture, sheen and patterns present. Guinea pigs are very social animals and are popular as household pets in Western societies.. In guinea pig ventricular myocytes, 2 LVACCs can be distinguished under nominally Na+-free conditions on the basis of their sensitivity to the blockers Ni2+ and TTX as well as by their distinct electrophysiological properties. The Ni2+-sensitive current shares many characteristics with ICa(T) previously identified under similar conditions.26 When studying ICa(T) of guinea pig ventricular myocytes, almost all investigators eliminated INa by using Na+-free superfusion solutions.2 21 25 26 27 Most investigators even added Na+ channel blockers like TTX to the external solutions to block any residual current due to Na+ contamination or Ca2+ permeation.27 The presence of TTX certainly excluded the characterization of ICa(TTX) described here.. The ICa(TTX) characterized in the present study corresponds well to the ICa(TTX) described previously in human atrial17 and rat ventricular 18 myocytes. An ICa(TTX) was also detected in 1 study involving guinea pig ventricular myocytes; the IC50 value of 2.4 ...

Ideal housing for guinea pigs are hutches approximately 0.9 sq metre per adult guinea pig, although they need plenty of exercise outside their hutch. Hutches and runs should ideally be placed out of the sun and sheltered from the rain and ideally hutches should be raised off the ground. In the winter, the hutch will have to be moved into a garage or outhouse.. Straw or wood shavings are ideal for guinea pigs in outdoor hutches and wet bedding should be removed on a daily basis. Hutches should be completely stripped out and scrubbed, ideally once a week during the summer and more regularly during the winter when guinea pigs spend more time inside. In the winter its also advisable to put plenty of hay in the hutch for your guinea pig to burrow in. ...
Guinea pigs need large open air cages in which to romp and frolic. They should have a diet of 1/8 cup of high quality grass-based guinea-pig pellets daily, as per manufacturers instructions. They should also have unlimited grass hay, and at least one cup of a variety of veggies. Guinea pigs like to be held in hand. Guinea pigs should be kept in cages larger than 7.5 square feet or 10.5 square feet for 2 pigs. They should always have a friend as guinea pigs are social animals. Breeding guinea pigs are not recommended as the rate of pregnancy complications is high.[3]. For their diet guinea pigs generally prefer fresh fruits and vegetables.[4]. ...

They must be fed fresh vegetables and a commercial food made for guinea pigs. Rabbit food, for example, is not fortified with the vitamin C that guinea pigs must have in their diet. Like humans but unlike most other mammals, guinea pigs cannot synthesize their own vitamin C, but must obtain this vital nutrient from the food they eat in order to stay healthy. Also like humans, if guinea pigs cannot get enough vitamin C they will suffer from scurvy and ultimately die. Commercial vitamin C pills are also an excellent source. There are several approaches for feeding the pills, but in practice most guinea pigs quickly learn to like them. After a brief period of friendly-force-feeding, the animals start eating the pills from their owners hands, making it an ideal source of essential vitamin C. Oranges can be fed, but some guinea pigs will develop irritations on their lips from the acid. Guinea pigs are probably the smallest grass-eating mammals. Grass digestion requires a special digestive system: ...

Several conflicting models have been used to characterize the gating behavior of the cardiac delayed rectifier. In this study, whole-cell delayed rectifier currents were measured in voltage-clamped guinea pig ventricular myocytes, and a minimal model which reproduced the observed kinetic behavior was identified. First, whole-cell potassium currents between -10 and +70 mV were recorded using external solutions designed to eliminate Na and Ca currents and two components of time-dependent outward current were found. One component was a La3(+)-sensitive current which inactivated and resembled the transient outward current described in other cell types; single-channel observations confirmed the presence of a transient outward current in these guinea pig ventricular cells (gamma = 9.9 pS, [K]o = 4.5 mM). Analysis of envelopes of tail amplitudes demonstrated that this component was absent in solutions containing 30-100 microM La3+. The remaining time-dependent current, IK, activated with a sigmoidal ...

Guinea pigs live in the wild in South America, living in rocky areas, grasslands and forest edges. They live in groups of about 10 adults, and live in burrows, either dug by themselves or by other animals. They are most active at night, when they come out and forage on a wide variety of plant materials. The guinea pig was first domesticated as long ago as 2000BC in the Andes in South America, in the region now known as Peru and Bolivia. They were originally kept for food, but some may have become family pets for the children at that time. Guinea pigs were not often bought; rather they were given as presents, especially as wedding gifts, or as gifts to special guests or children! They would be kept in the household kitchen, where they would be allowed to run around freely. At this time the guinea pig also played the role of the evil spirit collector in traditional healing rituals. In Andean medicine the guinea pig was rubbed over the body of a sick patient, and when it started squeaking they ...

Guinea pigs are fantastic little critters to have as pets. These intelligent little rodents are not only easy keepers, they are entertaining and fun to watch. However, choosing a guinea pig can be a bit challenging as each breed has very different personalities, grooming requirements, and feeding requirements. Before you run out to pick one up as a pet, make sure you understand their individual needs and what youll need before committing to any adorable guinea pig.. To begin with, you should consider adopting a guinea pig rather than purchasing one from a store. Most shelters have many of these little guys up for adoption. If youre looking to adopt for a child, this is even more important as you will have the added advantage of teaching your son or daughter about the importance of saving a life. Humane education is an area where most children are seriously lacking, so its really up to the parent to teach their children about the responsibilities of pets and how to care for them.. Purpose: The objectives of this study were to compare the functional expression of muscarinic and purinergic receptors in the urinary bladder of 2 species, rat and guinea pig under comparable experimental conditions; and to test whether the receptors in males and females differ. Methods: Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) techniques were used to identify gene expression profiles in bladder smooth muscle (total n=8 rats, 7 guinea pigs) and mechanical responses to nerve stimulation and applied acetylcholine (ACh) in the presence of specific antagonists were used to identify functional receptor sub-types (total n=12 rats, 16 guinea pigs). Results: RT-PCR indicated that M2 and M3 were the predominant muscarinic receptor genes in both the male and female rat and guinea pig bladders. The phasic component of the nerve-induced contraction was greater in guinea pigs vs. rats. The tonic component and the ACh response were inhibited by the M3 receptor antagonist, darifenacin (10-6 M, ...

You are likely to hear your guinea pig make a wheeking sound more than any other noise. The really interesting thing about a guinea pig wheeking is that they only tend to do it when they are around humans.. Scientists have conducted studies on this. They discovered that a guinea pig living in the wild will make wheeking sounds at all or very rarely. Only when a guinea pig has a human owner and becomes domesticated does a guinea pig start wheeking.. This means that wheeking is their way of communicating with us. Isnt that amazing? And what does this wheeking sound mean most of the time? Well your beloved cavy is telling you that they are hungry and they want you to give them food!. So how do you recognize this wheeking sound? Well thats easy because it sounds exactly as you read the word. Think about a dog that woofs or a cat that meows. The sounds that they make are identical to the way that you read the words arent they?. So when a guinea pig wheeks it is the same thing. Now we accept that ...

Animal laboratory. Technician holding a guinea pig Cavia sp. in a laboratory. Guinea pigs are used for various types of research. They are used for genetic manipulations, safety tests on chemicals and drugs, and for the study of infectious organisms. Laboratory guinea pigs are used as experimental animals because they produce a litter of young several times a year. Also their size and relative genetic similarity to humans is ideal for medical and toxicity tests. The technicians clothing helps to maintain clean room conditions. The modification of the Maguire method is designed to detect weaker allergens. The method derives from the "split-adjuvant" technique, in which chemical allergen and Freunds adjuvant are administered separately to the skin rather than as an emulsion. A topical application of a 0.1 mL aliquot of the test substance was applied to the clipped and depilated backs of 10 male guinea pigs (approximately 300 g) 4 times in 10 days. At the time of the third application, 0.2 mL of Freunds adjuvant was injected intradermally at one point adjacent to the insult site. After a 2-week rest period, the guinea pigs were challenged on the clipped flanks with the test material on 1 flank of each animal. The challenge site was evaluated for erythema and edema at 24 and 48 hours. A moderate erythema and/or edema in 2 or more guinea pigs was considered sufficient to classify the test material as a potential human skin sensitizer. Ten additional guinea pigs were treated with the diglycidyl ether of ...

The wild guinea pig lives on a diet of grasses and leaves and has developed a specialized gut which is adapted for this high fibre and coarse diet. The large intestine contains bacteria which break down the grass fibre to make it digestible. The guinea pig passes the fibre through the gut twice to make sure all the nutrients are absorbed. This means that they produce and eat a special kind of faeces (poop) which many owners do not ever see as their guinea pig eats them directly from their bottom. These faeces are dark, sticky and smelly, and are called caecotropes.. Because of this specialised gut and the constantly growing teeth the adult needs a high fibre, restricted carbohydrate, restricted protein and virtually no fat diet to stay healthy.. Vitamin C.. Guinea pigs are unique amongst our small pets, as like us, they cannot make their own vitamin C and must get it in their diet. We recommend 50 mg per adult guinea pig per day if there are no vegetables in thier diet, and 25 mg/day for those ...

AU - Maylie, J.. AU - Adelman, J. P.. PY - 1993. Y1 - 1993. N2 - A clone encoding the guinea pig (gp) min K potassium channel was isolated and expressed in Xenopus oocytes. The currents, gpI(sK), exhibit many of the electrophysiological and pharmacological properties characteristic of gpI(Ks), the slow component of the delayed rectifier potassium conductance in guinea pig cardiac myocytes. Depolarizing commands evoke outward potassium currents that activate slowly, with time constants on the order of seconds. The currents are blocked by the class III antiarrhythmic compound clofilium but not by the sotalol derivative E4031 or low concentrations of lanthanum. Like I(Ks) in guinea pig myocytes, gpI(sK) is modulated by stimulation of protein kinase A and protein kinase C (PKC). In contrast to rat and ...

While it is not recommended that guinea pigs be bred in captivity, if you find that your pet is indeed pregnant, you will want to be well equipped for the impending delivery. We will read on pregnant guinea pigs care, so that you are in a better position to take care of your pet during pregnancy.
We are all down as our little Apple Jack passed away last night. We think it was one of 3 possible things...too many carrots, some sort of illness that guinea pigs get or possible frightened from the cat. There were no wounds but she was a very timid piggie. Still, Sampson (our cat) might have watched them but woudnt hurt them (I hope). I think it was too many carrots and a greedy piggie. Im going to seriously limit carrots which are like sugar to guinea pigs and rabbits. So, if they have any sort of diabetic sort of tendency, they will not get hurt. I feel sad and annoyed. This is the second guinea pig to pass and during the winter, too. I thought maybe it was too cold but guinea pigs are naturally cold living critters ...

Antibody-like structures present on cell surfaces may be detected by means of an assay using chemically modified bacteriophages. Guinea pig spleen and peritoneal cells bound specifically the chemically modified bacteriophage T4. The reaction occurred at low temperatures and in the presence of inhibitors of protein biosynthesis and of pinocytosis. Upon exposure to the corresponding hapten, the dinitrophenyl (DNP)-phages or the penicilloyl (Pen)-phages could be released from cells and subsequently counted. The specific binding of DNP-bacteriophage T4 was almost abolished after prior treatment of cells with an affinity labeling reagent.. The ability of peritoneal macrophage cells to bind the modified phage was due to the cytophilic antibodies passively adsorbed in vivo or in vitro. No such reaction occurred when cells from normal guinea pigs were used. In the spleen suspension, most of the modified phages were bound to non-adhering lymphocytes. Spleen cells from both normal and immunized guinea ...
Guinea pigs live up to six years, so they have to pack a lot of living in that short time to keep the species going. Nature has a way of taking care of such things, which may explain why females can reproduce so much. Female guinea pigs go in season throughout the year.

My 9 year old daughter is in love with her guinea pig. She and my 5 year old son acquired these cuddly creatures a few weeks ago. Sydney had been begging for a pet for a couple of years. We already have a shih-tzu. However, she has wanted something to call her own. We had delayed getting an additional pet for as long as possible I think. After doing a lot of research on hamsters versus guinea pigs, we decided that a guinea pig would be more of what she is wanting in a pet -- soft, cuddly, small, doesnt run away from you, not vicious. Anyway, Coconut is her guinea pig and Luke has a guinea pig named Lizzie. The two little ladies live in a cage which we made from a design we saw on http://www.cavygages.com/. The cage stays in Sydneys room and she is responsible for cleaning it out and keeping the area clean. I think she would live in the "pig pen" herself if wed allow her to. Here is a picture I took yesterday of Sydney and Coconut. It was taken with my new camera! I finally decided on the ...
Guinea pigs should have time every day to play and exercise in a small room or enclosed area that does not have any openings through which they could escape. They should always be supervised when theyre out of their cages because they will chew on anything that they find. Cavies enjoy simple toys like cardboard tubes, empty oatmeal or coffee containers with smoothed edges, and bricks or rocks for climbing. Guinea pigs teeth are constantly growing, so they need chew toys that will help wear down the teeth. Recommended items include: branches and twigs that havent been sprayed with pesticides and/or small pieces of unpainted, untreated wood. Common signs of illness in a guinea pig include sneezing, crusty eyes, dirty ears, severe diarrhea, hair loss, weight loss, noticeable change in behavior, and bloody or gritty urine. If a guinea pig is showing any of these symptoms, take her to a veterinarian immediately. Maintenance Like any other pet, your guinea pig should be tended to each and every day.
The guinea pig is a gentle, highly social rodent, that commonly serves as a companion animal and an experimental model in North America and Europe. Food preferences are established early in life, and a guinea pig can refuse to eat if their food type or presentation is changed. For this reason, small mammal veterinarians recommend exposing juvenile guinea pigs to a variety of chows and vegetables. Guinea pigs also do not tolerate environmental changes well. When exposed to something perceived as dangerous, the response of the guinea pig is generally to freeze, or less commonly flight.
The risk of being a human guinea pig should be immediately obvious. Drug companies have all sorts of complications with their drugs after they have been approved by the FDA and been on the market often for years. As a human guinea pig, you are bypassing this process. So how does the job search work? Most people find work as human guinea pigs by looking at want ads that are requesting people to participate in studies. It should be clearly stated that this is a job that can come with serious, potentially very serious, long-term health risks. A human guinea pig many only be required to test a product as simple as a new wax based lip balm, or a human guinea pig might be required to test a powerful new drug that could damage any number of internal organs. In short, examine what is being asked of you with extraordinary care. If the testing of drugs is required, it is probably best to err on the side of caution and simply pass on the opportunity.. ...

I chose A Tale of Two Guinea Pigs by Lisa Maddock because I happen to know the author. I met her because her daughter was in my Girl Scout Troop. Also, who wouldnt want to read about a book about guinea pigs? They are just so cute and it sounded interesting too. First things first about this book, it was a funny mystery, which I love mysteries, and I havent read a funny one before, so this was different! Molly Jane is a girl of about nine or ten and loves animals, but cant have a pet, except her bird Tweets, because her dad is allergic to animals like cats and guinea pigs (which she loves!). It also doesnt help that her parents rent out their garage/apartment to someone who has guinea pigs and wont let Molly see them. When Amelia, who owns the guinea pigs, is out of town, she has Mollys mom take care of them and Molly is not allowed to see them. Molly starts to hear them squealing from their cage, which makes her very curious. So, one night, while her mom is at a baby shower and has ...

Grasses are the primary staple in a guinea pigs diet. They meet most of the needs of the rodent known scientifically as cavia porcellus. But there are a number of supplemental foods that can help supply missing nutrients and liven up their diet.. Foraging is one way to accomplish that, but it requires some care. There are a number of wild plants that are safe for cavies. Dandelions are a favorite, but are better when theyre relatively immature. Plantains are safe and white clover will be appreciated, just as it is for rabbits. Clover is rich in calcium, phosphorus and magnesium that guinea pigs need. Yarrow is fine, as are chickweeds.. But there is a variety of plants that are toxic, such as buttercups. So, unless you have a good eye for what is what, it may be best to avoid foraging until after your research is advanced.. If you feed raw grasses, foraged or not, rather than pellets, cavies will do better with young, fresh material. Green, leafy hay is much preferred to the stemmy parts. Its ...
The domestication of guinea pigs dates back hundreds of years. Animals raised for food or the laboratory are of a species (Cavia porcellus) that is not found in the wild. Its closest relatives are the Brazilian guinea pig (C. aperea) and the montane guinea pig (C. tschudii) from western South America including Peru. ...
Guinea Pig Reproduction. The first thing to remember, and the most important, is that female guinea pigs should have their first litter before seven months of age. If they fall pregnant after this age, then it becomes extremely life-threatening for a female to deliver. We never advocate breeding guinea pigs, as one in five females die in childbirth. Homes are also scarce, and due to the high number of accidental pregnancies (usually occurring in pet shops and new owners who were incorrectly told the sex), inbreeding has become a major contributing factor to the high incidences of genetic abnormalities.. This is all too common a scenario, however: a guinea pig arrives home after being incorrectly identified as either male or female (note that it is very difficult to determine the gender of young pigs). They are put into cages with existing family members and voila… someone is pregnant. Or very often, they have already been impregnated at the pet store. The new owner never had any intention of ...

Give your guinea pig a good hair day. Sure, guinea pigs may be a bit slobbish (just a bit!) around their house - but when it comes to keeping themselves well-groomed, theres rarely a hair out of place. Theyre happy to doll up on any given day. However, brushing your piggy pal on a regular basis will help keep his coat in good condition AND give you the chance to check for problems such as lice, or sores on his skin. Just how much youll need to brush will depend on how long your twitchy sidekicks fur is. Long-haired guinea pigs will need to be brushed - and any matts, combed out - each day. If it helps, matts and loose hair are best teased out, by hand. And if you asked a breeder, they would recommend trimming your longhaired guinea pig so his hair isnt dragging on the ground. Using a wide-tooth comb on this little dude is also best, as a stiff brush will pull the hair right out - YEOW! Short-haired guinea pigs will need a good brushing at least once a week - thankfully, matts arent usually a

Crude synaptosomes (P2 fraction) were prepared from striatum, hippocampus, or cerebral cortex of young adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (150-200 g), from cerebral cortex of adult male C57BL/6 mice (25-30 g), or from cerebral cortex of adult male guinea pigs (400-500 g) as described. 26 Synaptosomes were suspended in HEPES buffered medium (composition: 140 mm NaCl, 5 mm KCl, 1 mm MgCl2, 1.2 mm Na2HPO4, 5 mm NaHCO3, 10 mm d-glucose, and 20 mm HEPES/NaOH, pH 7.4), collected by centrifugation at 8,000 g for 10 min, and stored on ice for up to 5 h until use. Release of endogenous glutamate was measured by an enzyme-linked fluorometric method. 27 Synaptosomal pellets (0.5 mg protein, determined by the method of Bradford 28) were resuspended in HEPES buffered medium plus 16 μm bovine serum albumin, 1 mm NADP+, 100 U l-glutamate dehydrogenase, and 1.3 mm CaCl2(1.5 ml final volume). Previously we had developed a triple gene mutant of M. tuberculosis (MtbΔmms) harbouring disruption in three genes namely mptpA, mptpB and sapM. Though vaccination with MtbΔmms strain induced protection in the lungs of guinea pigs, the mutant strain failed to control the hematogenous spread of the challenge strain to the spleen. Additionally, inoculation with MtbΔmms resulted in some pathological damage to the spleens in the early phase of infection. In order to generate a strain that overcomes the pathology caused by MtbΔmms in spleen of guinea pigs and controls dissemination of the challenge strain, MtbΔmms was genetically modified by disrupting bioA gene to generate MtbΔmmsb strain. Further, in vivo attenuation of MtbΔmmsb was evaluated and its protective efficacy was assessed against virulent M. tuberculosis challenge in guinea pigs. MtbΔmmsb mutant strain was highly attenuated for growth and virulence in guinea pigs. Vaccination with MtbΔmmsb mutant generated significant protection ...

Optimal expansion of the cultures from an individual colony was achieved by repeated stimulation with allogeneic cells in conditioned media. Mapping studies using stimulator cells from inbred and outbred guinea pigs and blocking studies with alloantisera and xenogeneic monoclonal antibodies to guinea pig Ia antigens indicated that these T cell colonies were specifically stimulated to proliferate by Ia molecules. In addition, these xenogeneic monoclonal anti-Ia antibodies had selective and differential inhibitory effects on the ...
