Introduction: The E298D polymorphic variant of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (e-NOS) has been variably associated with myocardial infarction (MI) in different populations. Data relating to this variant are controversial also in Greece. Accordingly, we examined a possible association between the E298D polymorphism of the e-NOS gene and MI in a subgroup of the Greek population.. Methods: The study population consisted of 204 patients with a history of MI and 218 healthy control subjects without history or electrocardiogram suggestive of MI. All subjects were selected from the general population of the greater Athens area. Age, gender and BMI were not different between groups. From each participant genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes. The e-NOS E298D polymorphism was determined by Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) with melting curve analysis of PCR products from acceptor and donor probes specific for the polymorphism.. Results: The frequencies of the E298D (GG, ...

The Rhodope Massif of northern Greece and southern Bulgaria has been variably interpreted as a fragment of pre-Alpine, Hercynian or Precambrian continental crust, that was actively involved in European margin convergent tectonics during the Mesozoic and Tertiary. Alternatively it is proposed in this thesis that, for central Greek Rhodope, the lithological associations and tectonothermal history are consistent with progressive south-directed crustal growth through deep-level underplating, or subcretion, of material of oceanic and continental margin affinity, which was transferred from footwall to hanging wall within a north-directed Palaeotethyan subduction system. Central Greek Rhodope comprises a sequence of schists, gneisses and migmatites of wide compositional variation which have undergone intense tectonic intermixing. Extensive marble units occur in association with amphibolites, retrogressed eclogites, meta-gabbros and ultramafic rocks. These are intercalated with meta-sedimentary ...
Biodegraded seep oils, devoid of n-alkanes and most isoprenoid hydrocarbons, were successfully correlated with subsurface crude oils in western Greece primarily using carbon isotopes and the more microbially resistant tricyclic terpane and aromatic steroid hydrocarbon distributions. All the studied oils seem to fit into three major genetic groups which are consistent with the geologic, tectonic, and geographic settings and are presumably related to different source-rock facies. Group I oils are typical of the abundant oil shows in the Epirus province, northwest Greece. Minor but consistent biomarker differences necessitated subgrouping of the Epirus oils, implying derivation from slightly different sources. Group II oils are located in the Katakolon area, northwestern Peloponnese. Group III oils, which are clearly distinct from the other groups, are centered in Zakynthos Island. An oil seep at Trifos, west central Greece, and a subsurface oil from Paxi Island, because of uncertain correlations, are
Dr. Patrinos, a genetic researcher, presented his profound studies of the impact of genetics on ALS, particularly with respect to Greek patients. His research has focused on the identification of genetic variants associated with sporadic, versus genetic or familial, ALS in Greek patients, which affects 95% of patients.. This work is exceptionally important, as it is the first time the complete genome sequencing of Greek patients has been analyzed. Patrinos is exploring different ethnicities and families, in an effort to understand this complex disease which is expressed with such varied phenotypes. Coming from the area of genetic diagnosis, Dr. Patrinos hopes that by providing earlier diagnosis, his findings will be able to effectively contribute to the work of teams like Professor Gravanis.. On understanding the human genome, and hence the basis of such diseases, Dr. Patrinos said "We know the letters, and we know some words - but we cant read the whole book.". The event included a Q&A ...
Turkeys deputy prime minister Veysi Kaynak openly threatened Greece and claimed that the Turkish Armed Forces will prevent Greece in the Aegean Sea.. Speaking to state-run Anadolu News Agency, Kaynak said:. "Greece, just like in Kardak [Turkish name for Imia] is trying to exploit tie islets but Turkey will not allow Greece to open new areas in the Aegean Turkey will not allow it to open new areas in the Aegean.". "Greece is trying to do exploit the Kardak islets and other similar islets. The Turkish Armed Forces that have the responsibility for the border protection will not allow it. The Turkish forces will prevent such a development in any way.". It is not clear whether Kaynak was referring to Greeces plans to inhabit the islets in the Aegean sea and touristic exploit them, but this open threat is dropped like a bombshell in the middle of an escalation of tension between the two neighboring countries provoked by non-stop challenges by the Turkish side.. Kaynak sharply criticized Greeces ...
This is a timeline of the presence of Orthodoxy in Greece. The history of Greece traditionally encompasses the study of the Greek people, the areas they ruled historically, as well as the territory now composing the modern state of Greece. Christianity was first brought to the geographical area corresponding to modern Greece by the Apostle Paul, although the churchs apostolicity also rests upon St. Andrew who preached the gospel in Greece and suffered martyrdom in Patras, Titus, Pauls companion who preached the gospel in Crete where he became bishop, Philip who, according to the tradition, visited and preached in Athens, Luke the Evangelist who was martyred in Thebes, Lazarus of Bethany, Bishop of Kittium in Cyprus, and John the Theologian who was exiled on the island of Patmos where he received the Revelation recorded in the last book of the New Testament. In addition, the Theotokos is regarded as having visited the Holy Mountain in 49 AD according to tradition. Thus Greece became the first ...

Nicholas Apoifis, Anarchy in Athens: An Ethnography of Militancy, Emotions and Violence (Manchester: Manchester University Press, 2017). In his Ph.D. thesis Anarchy in Athens: An Ethnography of Militancy, Emotions and Violence, the Australian sociologist Nicholas Apoifis has taken on one of the hottest topics in recent anarchist history, namely the anarchist movement of the Greek capital.. Apoifis mentions that he originally wanted to conduct research in two more Greek cities, but that "because of the sheer scale of the movement in Athens, I limited my research to this explosive city" (p. 11). As far as the international perception of contemporary Greek anarchism is concerned, this makes little difference, as it focuses almost exclusively on what is happening in Athens anyway - in particular, in the Exarcheia neighborhood, which features prominently in Apoifiss book.. In a sense, Anarchy in Athens turns three books into one: there is the academic discussion of social movement theory; there is ...

The refugee camp in Nea Kavala, accessible through the road bordering the village, and which is in close proximity to a supermarket, has been in operation since the end of February 2016. It is an open structure, without restrictions on exit. It is operated exclusively by the military, that is, there is no civilian staff from the Ministry of Interior/Migration, which creates an issue regarding whose jurisdiction the camp is under. The camp lies outside the Diavata-Idomeni axis (though very close to the latter), and very few organizations visit it, so that very few humanitarian aid materials are available. Aid not distributed following a system, as no civilian staff is available to carry out this work. Staff present (reported on March 5, 2016) consisted of 7 people in total, all military, and the lieutenant in charge of the camp (who performs his duties on a shift basis) appeared to be fully aware of his duties, responsibilities, as well as of objective restrictions, as there is no aid, ...
I also group with Tuscans with the Genographic testing. My family is more from Emilia-Romagna on both sides. I guess Tuscany is close enough to northern Italian genetics in general. People from Turkey came through Northern Greece and then went into Tuscany. Geneographic shows this on their migration maps. I would assume Mr. Aydin that some people of Turkish ancestry are related to Greeks and Tuscans. Being on the Black Sea Coast of Turkey is rather close to the migration route of people from Turkey into northern Greece and then into northern Italy. I also group with Greeks, but have no Greek ancestry. I show up with a lot of marker in common with Otzi the Iceman. I also have the newer K1A that is common in northeast Italy and some think came from there. I also have the older U group mtDNA like U8 and U8b, showing that my maternal ancestors came into Europe 40,000 years ago and then down into Italy. My paternal ancestors most likely came in from Turkey or what people called Anatolia. Realize all ...

She was one of the few women with any power in ancient Greece, the priestess who presided over the oracle at Delphi, reading prophecies inspired by great god Apollo between the 8th Century BC and around 400 AD. She appears in many stories, in turns dancing and speaking in tongues and speaking lucidly in her own voice. Suspicions that there was a fissure below the temple from which poured gas which induced this state were discredited by the first team to excavate in 1892, but have since been reconsidered. The priestess went into a separate chamber where they could easily have been exposed to some form of hallucinogenic gas which gave them the vision. Delphi was also the centre of the earth for the ancient Greeks. Apollo was believed to have defeated a python on this spot, who was guarding the Earth Goddess Gaia, then freed. Afterwards Apollo lived here. Apollo was blamed for the earthquakes the area suffered and when the contact between he and the inhabitants facilitated by the oracle is taken ...

Athens categorically rejected the German proposal to cede control over its budget to the European Union as a precognition for the second bailout, the rescue package for Greece. "We can never accept this. A similar proposal was made in the past by a Dutch minister. We do not even discuss about it" senior governmental sources told Athens News Agency (quoted via in.gr).. AFP quotes another (?) Greek government source, saying that "There is effectively a non-paper that was presented to the Eurogroup," said the source and stressed that "Greece will not discuss such a possibility. It is out of the question that we would accept it, these are matters of national sovereignty." At the same time the source told AFP that such a move would "require a change in (EU) treaties.". The proposal as published by newspaper Financial Times triggered strong reactions in Greece. Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou (PASOK) described it as the product of a sick imagination. "Tts an issue of sick imagination, ...
The movement in Greece to get Berlin to pay up has become stronger over the last few years as Athens experiences financial hardships following austerity measures, which were a prerequisite of being given the bailout money, to stop the country from falling into financial ruin.. The left-wing Syriza government has decided to raise the issue of war reparations again with Berlin.. "Germany has never properly paid reparations for the damage done to Greece by the Nazi occupation," Prime Minister Tsipras, the leader of the anti-austerity Syriza party, said in March. "The crimes carried out by the Nazis are still vivid, and we have a moral obligation to remember what the forces did to the country.". Berlin has flatly denied it owes Athens any more money, saying it already paid Greece war damages of $25 million in the 1950s, equivalent to $220 million today, and also paid out 115 million Deutschmarks (a sum worth around $230 million today), to victims of Nazi crimes in the early 1960s.. Greece achieved independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1830. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between supporters of the king and other anti-communist and communist rebels. Following the latters defeat in 1949, Greece joined NATO in 1952. In 1967, a group of military officers seized power, establishing a military dictatorship that suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country. In 1974 following the collapse of the dictatorship, democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. In 1981, Greece joined the EC (now the EU); it became the 12th member of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in 2001. Greece has suffered a ...
In the aftermath of the victorious Balkan Wars, Greece was in a state of euphoria. Her territory and population had doubled with the massive liberation of Greeks from Ottoman rule and, under the dual leadership of Constantine and Venizelos, her future seemed bright. However Constantine had been ill with pleurisy since the Balkan wars and almost died during the summer of 1915. This state of affairs was not to last, however. When World War I broke out, a dispute appeared between the king and the government about the responsibility for the external policy of the state in case of war. Constantine was faced with the difficulty of determining where Greeces support lay. His first concern as King was for the welfare and security of Greece. He rejected the early appeal from Kaiser Wilhelm that Greece should march on the side of Germany and stated that Greece would remain neutral. Sophie, Constantines queen, was popularly thought to support her brother Kaiser Wilhelm, but it seems that she was actually ...

REASON: 1.4 (B) AND (D). 1. (C) SUMMARY: With elections widely expected in late September, GOG officials and undeclared political candidates are raising the bar for Macedonias NATO entry. Distancing themselves from the 1995 Interim Accord, Greece sees the 2008 NATO decision on enlargement as powerful leverage to force Skopje to compromise on the name issue. Officials note that, even should the GOG decide to approve Macedonias entry as FYROM, there is no guarantee that the Greek Parliament will approve it. Contacts with both the GOG and the GOMs Athens-based representatives suggest that both sides are looking for an America ex machina to solve this problem for them. In 499 BC, the Ionian city states under Persian rule rebelled against the Persian-supported tyrants that ruled them.[17] Supported by troops sent from Athens and Eretria, they advanced as far as Sardis and burnt the city down, before being driven back by a Persian counterattack.[18] The revolt continued until 494, when the rebelling Ionians were defeated.[19] Darius did not forget that the Athenians had assisted the Ionian revolt, however, and in 490 he assembled an armada to conquer Athens.[20] Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Athenians - supported by their Plataean allies - defeated the Persian forces at the Battle of Marathon, and the Persian fleet withdrew.[21]. Ten years later, a second invasion was launched by Darius son Xerxes.[22] The city-states of northern and central Greece submitted to the Persian forces without resistance, but a coalition of 31 Greek city states, including Athens and Sparta, determined to resist the Persian invaders.[23] At the same time, Greek Sicily was ...

The purpose of this study was to examine self-care behaviors of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus living in the Metropolitan Area of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece. The Summary of Diabetes Self-Care behaviors measurement was administered to 215 patients, out of which 177 were eligible to participate (87 males). Patients, aged 30 years or more, were recruited through a university hospital day-clinic. Older patients (,65 years), as well as those with "higher educational level" did not distribute their daily carbohydrate intake equally. Nevertheless, they were more likely to adapt to their physicians recommendations regarding medication and to regularly perform suggested blood glucose checking. Exercise patterns were more often found for higher educated, earlier diagnosed males. Younger patients were less likely to follow their healthcare professionals recommendations, regarding diet, medication intake, blood glucose checking, foot care and exercise compared to older patients. These results ...

A 48-hour nationwide general strike against austerity measures and privatisations was launched on Tuesday, ahead of a parliamentary vote on the governments Medium-Term fiscal programme on Wednesday at the conclusion of an ongoing debate in the 300-member House and on the programmes Implementation Law on Thursday. Protest rallies will also be held in Athens, Thessaloniki and throughout the country on both days. The strike, called by the countrys two major umbrella federations GSEE and ADEDY, representing the private and public sectors respectively, is expected to bring transports and public services to a standstill. Athens will be without public transport on both days with the exception of the Athens Metro, which will run normally after train drivers decided to suspend their mobilisations in order to facilitate transportation to and from rallies and demonstrations. Posted on 02/04/2013 9:41:13 AM PST by Nachum. Tens of thousands of neo-Nazis rallied in Athens in support of Greeces far-right Golden Dawn party, in the movements largest demonstration of support since its rise to power in last June s general election. Men dressed in military uniforms, holding torches, donning swastikas and chanting anti-immigrant slogans, marched through central Athens in what was reportedly a memorial event paying tribute to the party s fallen soldiers, The International Business Times reported. This is a day of remembrance. Its a day to remember that Golden Dawn is here to stay. And so long as it does, there will be hope for the country, Golden Dawn spokesman Ilias Kassidiaris told supporters. Hundreds of riot police and security officials were deployed to the scene of the march, which took place near the prime ministers office and the Turkish embassy in Athens, according to The Times. The party, which has become notorious for its blatant anti-Semitic and xenophobic ...
European Union leaders are considering the option to ring-fence Greece in order to stop the massive inflow of migrants coming from Turkey.. Despite the agreement with Turkey for 3 billion euros in financial aid in exchange for stemming the boat loads of migrants going to Greece, the inflow has not been reduced in the slightest. After the failure to cooperate with Turkey, the European Commission is considering more drastic measures.. EU leaders are considering blocking the passage to Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and offering financial aid to the non-EU Balkan country.. However, this would mean that tens of thousands migrants will end up stranded in Greece. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has warned Europe that Greece might become a "black box" for refugees.. The plan was discussed on Wednesday by EU ambassadors after Slovenias prime minister Miroslav Cerar, sent a letter to his EU counterparts urging assistance to FYROM to prevent irregular migrants from crossing the Greece-FYROM ...
Despite the nascent recovery, widespread discontent with austerity measures helped propel the far-left Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) party into government in national legislative elections in January 2015. Between January and July 2015, frustrations between the SYRIZA-led government and Greeces EU and IMF creditors over the implementation of bailout measures and disbursement of funds led the Greek government to run up significant arrears to suppliers and Greek banks to rely on emergency lending, and also called into question Greeces future in the euro zone. To stave off a collapse of the banking system, Greece imposed capital controls in June 2015 shortly before rattling international financial markets by becoming the first developed nation to miss a loan payment to the IMF. Unable to reach an agreement with creditors, Prime Minister Alexios TSIPRAS held a nationwide referendum on 5 July on whether to accept the terms of Greeces bailout, campaigning for the ultimately successful "no" ...
