Introduction: The E298D polymorphic variant of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (e-NOS) has been variably associated with myocardial infarction (MI) in different populations. Data relating to this variant are controversial also in Greece. Accordingly, we examined a possible association between the E298D polymorphism of the e-NOS gene and MI in a subgroup of the Greek population.. Methods: The study population consisted of 204 patients with a history of MI and 218 healthy control subjects without history or electrocardiogram suggestive of MI. All subjects were selected from the general population of the greater Athens area. Age, gender and BMI were not different between groups. From each participant genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes. The e-NOS E298D polymorphism was determined by Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) with melting curve analysis of PCR products from acceptor and donor probes specific for the polymorphism.. Results: The frequencies of the E298D (GG, ...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Most published reference values for lung function test (LFT) parameters introduce systematic bias. The aim of this study was to compare measured values of FEV(1) and FVC with the corresponding normal predicted values in a Greek population, and to produce reference equations for LFT parameters in this population.METHODS: In a cross-sectional study conducted in Macedonia, Greece, 1080 adult healthy, non-smokers (432 men, 648 women, aged 18-80 years), underwent spirometry. Measured values of FVC and FEV(1) were compared with predicted values determined using three existing sets of reference equations: one recently derived from a European population and two others widely used in Europe (European Coal and Steel Community; ECSC) and the USA (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey; NHANES III). Height and age were entered into the multivariate regression analysis to produce reference equations for LFT parameters.RESULTS: All three published sets of equations ...

The Rhodope Massif of northern Greece and southern Bulgaria has been variably interpreted as a fragment of pre-Alpine, Hercynian or Precambrian continental crust, that was actively involved in European margin convergent tectonics during the Mesozoic and Tertiary. Alternatively it is proposed in this thesis that, for central Greek Rhodope, the lithological associations and tectonothermal history are consistent with progressive south-directed crustal growth through deep-level underplating, or subcretion, of material of oceanic and continental margin affinity, which was transferred from footwall to hanging wall within a north-directed Palaeotethyan subduction system. Central Greek Rhodope comprises a sequence of schists, gneisses and migmatites of wide compositional variation which have undergone intense tectonic intermixing. Extensive marble units occur in association with amphibolites, retrogressed eclogites, meta-gabbros and ultramafic rocks. These are intercalated with meta-sedimentary ...
Biodegraded seep oils, devoid of n-alkanes and most isoprenoid hydrocarbons, were successfully correlated with subsurface crude oils in western Greece primarily using carbon isotopes and the more microbially resistant tricyclic terpane and aromatic steroid hydrocarbon distributions. All the studied oils seem to fit into three major genetic groups which are consistent with the geologic, tectonic, and geographic settings and are presumably related to different source-rock facies. Group I oils are typical of the abundant oil shows in the Epirus province, northwest Greece. Minor but consistent biomarker differences necessitated subgrouping of the Epirus oils, implying derivation from slightly different sources. Group II oils are located in the Katakolon area, northwestern Peloponnese. Group III oils, which are clearly distinct from the other groups, are centered in Zakynthos Island. An oil seep at Trifos, west central Greece, and a subsurface oil from Paxi Island, because of uncertain correlations, are
Dr. Patrinos, a genetic researcher, presented his profound studies of the impact of genetics on ALS, particularly with respect to Greek patients. His research has focused on the identification of genetic variants associated with sporadic, versus genetic or familial, ALS in Greek patients, which affects 95% of patients.. This work is exceptionally important, as it is the first time the complete genome sequencing of Greek patients has been analyzed. Patrinos is exploring different ethnicities and families, in an effort to understand this complex disease which is expressed with such varied phenotypes. Coming from the area of genetic diagnosis, Dr. Patrinos hopes that by providing earlier diagnosis, his findings will be able to effectively contribute to the work of teams like Professor Gravanis.. On understanding the human genome, and hence the basis of such diseases, Dr. Patrinos said We know the letters, and we know some words - but we cant read the whole book.. The event included a Q&A ...
Turkeys deputy prime minister Veysi Kaynak openly threatened Greece and claimed that the Turkish Armed Forces will prevent Greece in the Aegean Sea.. Speaking to state-run Anadolu News Agency, Kaynak said:. Greece, just like in Kardak [Turkish name for Imia] is trying to exploit tie islets but Turkey will not allow Greece to open new areas in the Aegean Turkey will not allow it to open new areas in the Aegean.. Greece is trying to do exploit the Kardak islets and other similar islets. The Turkish Armed Forces that have the responsibility for the border protection will not allow it. The Turkish forces will prevent such a development in any way.. It is not clear whether Kaynak was referring to Greeces plans to inhabit the islets in the Aegean sea and touristic exploit them, but this open threat is dropped like a bombshell in the middle of an escalation of tension between the two neighboring countries provoked by non-stop challenges by the Turkish side.. Kaynak sharply criticized Greeces ...
The aim of this study is to evaluate the psychometric properties of the DASS-21 in a non-clinical sample of the Greek population. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scales 21 (DASS-21) is a self-report instrument measuring anxiety, depression and stress. The validation was carried out in a sample of 12,868 Greek adults, ranging from 18 to 65 years old. Results showed that the DASS21 has satisfactory reliability and validity indexes. Moreover, the factorial structure of the scale matches the ones found in previous studies in many countries. The results of this study suggest that the Greek DASS-21 can be used as a reliable and valid instrument for the measurement of depression, anxiety and stress in the Greek population.

This is a timeline of the presence of Orthodoxy in Greece. The history of Greece traditionally encompasses the study of the Greek people, the areas they ruled historically, as well as the territory now composing the modern state of Greece. Christianity was first brought to the geographical area corresponding to modern Greece by the Apostle Paul, although the churchs apostolicity also rests upon St. Andrew who preached the gospel in Greece and suffered martyrdom in Patras, Titus, Pauls companion who preached the gospel in Crete where he became bishop, Philip who, according to the tradition, visited and preached in Athens, Luke the Evangelist who was martyred in Thebes, Lazarus of Bethany, Bishop of Kittium in Cyprus, and John the Theologian who was exiled on the island of Patmos where he received the Revelation recorded in the last book of the New Testament. In addition, the Theotokos is regarded as having visited the Holy Mountain in 49 AD according to tradition. Thus Greece became the first ...

N2 - For the last 38 years, Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) has been widely used as a dementia screening measure in everyday clinical practice as well as in both cohort and cross-sectional studies. Its validity and reliability for the Greek population has explicitly been documented. However, the effect of age and education on the subjects performance makes it necessary to reckon them in the estimation of the cutoff score. The purpose of this study is to estimate the prevalence of dementia in Greek population and determine the cutoff score by age and education-corrected norms. Cross sectional study of 630 patients older than 55 years, who live independently in Ilion and Helioupolis Municipalities was ...

Nicholas Apoifis, Anarchy in Athens: An Ethnography of Militancy, Emotions and Violence (Manchester: Manchester University Press, 2017). In his Ph.D. thesis Anarchy in Athens: An Ethnography of Militancy, Emotions and Violence, the Australian sociologist Nicholas Apoifis has taken on one of the hottest topics in recent anarchist history, namely the anarchist movement of the Greek capital.. Apoifis mentions that he originally wanted to conduct research in two more Greek cities, but that because of the sheer scale of the movement in Athens, I limited my research to this explosive city (p. 11). As far as the international perception of contemporary Greek anarchism is concerned, this makes little difference, as it focuses almost exclusively on what is happening in Athens anyway - in particular, in the Exarcheia neighborhood, which features prominently in Apoifiss book.. In a sense, Anarchy in Athens turns three books into one: there is the academic discussion of social movement theory; there is ...

The refugee camp in Nea Kavala, accessible through the road bordering the village, and which is in close proximity to a supermarket, has been in operation since the end of February 2016. It is an open structure, without restrictions on exit. It is operated exclusively by the military, that is, there is no civilian staff from the Ministry of Interior/Migration, which creates an issue regarding whose jurisdiction the camp is under. The camp lies outside the Diavata-Idomeni axis (though very close to the latter), and very few organizations visit it, so that very few humanitarian aid materials are available. Aid not distributed following a system, as no civilian staff is available to carry out this work. Staff present (reported on March 5, 2016) consisted of 7 people in total, all military, and the lieutenant in charge of the camp (who performs his duties on a shift basis) appeared to be fully aware of his duties, responsibilities, as well as of objective restrictions, as there is no aid, ...
I also group with Tuscans with the Genographic testing. My family is more from Emilia-Romagna on both sides. I guess Tuscany is close enough to northern Italian genetics in general. People from Turkey came through Northern Greece and then went into Tuscany. Geneographic shows this on their migration maps. I would assume Mr. Aydin that some people of Turkish ancestry are related to Greeks and Tuscans. Being on the Black Sea Coast of Turkey is rather close to the migration route of people from Turkey into northern Greece and then into northern Italy. I also group with Greeks, but have no Greek ancestry. I show up with a lot of marker in common with Otzi the Iceman. I also have the newer K1A that is common in northeast Italy and some think came from there. I also have the older U group mtDNA like U8 and U8b, showing that my maternal ancestors came into Europe 40,000 years ago and then down into Italy. My paternal ancestors most likely came in from Turkey or what people called Anatolia. Realize all ...

She was one of the few women with any power in ancient Greece, the priestess who presided over the oracle at Delphi, reading prophecies inspired by great god Apollo between the 8th Century BC and around 400 AD. She appears in many stories, in turns dancing and speaking in tongues and speaking lucidly in her own voice. Suspicions that there was a fissure below the temple from which poured gas which induced this state were discredited by the first team to excavate in 1892, but have since been reconsidered. The priestess went into a separate chamber where they could easily have been exposed to some form of hallucinogenic gas which gave them the vision. Delphi was also the centre of the earth for the ancient Greeks. Apollo was believed to have defeated a python on this spot, who was guarding the Earth Goddess Gaia, then freed. Afterwards Apollo lived here. Apollo was blamed for the earthquakes the area suffered and when the contact between he and the inhabitants facilitated by the oracle is taken ...

Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disorder of unknown cause that affects multiple organs. The cells of the granuloma are organized spatially as immune granulomas, the characteristic of sarcoidosis, as a result of an immunological response to an antigenic trigger. It has been suggested that infective agents, including mycobacteria, propionibacteria, parasites such as Schistosoma, and fungi such as Coccidioides, are likely triggers (but not as infection) in a genetically predisposed individual and that this initial event leads to the sarcoidosis granulomatous response (2). Other agents such as beryllium, zirconium, and aluminum can also trigger the granulomatous response (2). Most studies of a possible causal organism have focused on mycobacteria (8), but a convincing association between sarcoidosis and mycobacterial infections has yet to be established. Recently, using PCR techniques based on IS6110, MPB64, and mtp-40 amplification, we reported the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex ...

Athens categorically rejected the German proposal to cede control over its budget to the European Union as a precognition for the second bailout, the rescue package for Greece. We can never accept this. A similar proposal was made in the past by a Dutch minister. We do not even discuss about it senior governmental sources told Athens News Agency (quoted via in.gr).. AFP quotes another (?) Greek government source, saying that There is effectively a non-paper that was presented to the Eurogroup, said the source and stressed that Greece will not discuss such a possibility. It is out of the question that we would accept it, these are matters of national sovereignty. At the same time the source told AFP that such a move would require a change in (EU) treaties.. The proposal as published by newspaper Financial Times triggered strong reactions in Greece. Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou (PASOK) described it as the product of a sick imagination. Tts an issue of sick imagination, ...
The movement in Greece to get Berlin to pay up has become stronger over the last few years as Athens experiences financial hardships following austerity measures, which were a prerequisite of being given the bailout money, to stop the country from falling into financial ruin.. The left-wing Syriza government has decided to raise the issue of war reparations again with Berlin.. Germany has never properly paid reparations for the damage done to Greece by the Nazi occupation, Prime Minister Tsipras, the leader of the anti-austerity Syriza party, said in March. The crimes carried out by the Nazis are still vivid, and we have a moral obligation to remember what the forces did to the country.. Berlin has flatly denied it owes Athens any more money, saying it already paid Greece war damages of $25 million in the 1950s, equivalent to $220 million today, and also paid out 115 million Deutschmarks (a sum worth around $230 million today), to victims of Nazi crimes in the early 1960s.. A 2012 report by ...

Greece achieved independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1830. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between supporters of the king and other anti-communist and communist rebels. Following the latters defeat in 1949, Greece joined NATO in 1952. In 1967, a group of military officers seized power, establishing a military dictatorship that suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country. In 1974 following the collapse of the dictatorship, democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. In 1981, Greece joined the EC (now the EU); it became the 12th member of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in 2001. Greece has suffered a ...

In the aftermath of the victorious Balkan Wars, Greece was in a state of euphoria. Her territory and population had doubled with the massive liberation of Greeks from Ottoman rule and, under the dual leadership of Constantine and Venizelos, her future seemed bright. However Constantine had been ill with pleurisy since the Balkan wars and almost died during the summer of 1915. This state of affairs was not to last, however. When World War I broke out, a dispute appeared between the king and the government about the responsibility for the external policy of the state in case of war. Constantine was faced with the difficulty of determining where Greeces support lay. His first concern as King was for the welfare and security of Greece. He rejected the early appeal from Kaiser Wilhelm that Greece should march on the side of Germany and stated that Greece would remain neutral. Sophie, Constantines queen, was popularly thought to support her brother Kaiser Wilhelm, but it seems that she was actually ...

Distancing themselves from the 1995 Interim Accord, Greece sees the 2008 NATO decision on enlargement as powerful leverage to force Skopje to compromise on the name issue. Officials note that, even should the GOG decide to approve Macedonias entry as FYROM, there is no guarantee that the Greek Parliament will approve it. Contacts with both the GOG and the GOMs Athens-based representatives suggest that both sides are looking for an America ex machina to solve this problem for them. The global financial crisis emerging in 2008 struck Greece especially hard, whereas Scandinavian countries were less affected. This has created a unique opportunity to study the long-term effect of community stress on populations. Increasing frequencies of mental health issues and poorer perceived health among the Greek population have been reported. The physiological marker of long-term stress, cortisol in hair, is applied in this study together with measures of perceived health and stress, depression and anxiety. Our aim was to study self-reported and physiological stress, perceived health, including mental health, in the general population of Greece compared to Scandinavia, in order to assess long-term effects of the economic crisis on these parameters. A cross-sectional comparative study of adult (18-65 years) Primary Health Care visitors from semi-rural areas in Greece (n = 84) and Scandinavia (n = 140). Data collection was performed in 2012, and encompassed a questionnaire with a variety of health

By Renee Maltezou and Jan Strupczewski | ATHENS/BRUSSELS ATHENS/BRUSSELS Greece and its international lenders remained at odds in talks to release fresh bailout loans to Athens on Wednesday as Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said a deal was needed this week and accused creditors of playing games and causing delays.Talks between Greece, the European Union and International Monetary Fund have stuttered for months due to differences over Greeces fiscal progress, labour and energy market reforms, rekindling worries of a new crisis in Europe.Euro zone finance ministers will discuss the state of Greek negotiations on Friday at an informal meeting in Malta, but officials said a full deal there was unlikely. Tsipras said he would ask for an EU leaders summit if there was no deal this week and accused some creditors of being obstinate. The Greek economy is ready to leave the crisis behind it

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - The commander of forces fighting the U.N.-supported government in Libya visited Athens Friday in a bid to counter Turkeys support for his opponents, ahead of a weekend summit on Libya in Berlin. Gen. Khalifa Hifters surprise trip to Greece came two days before the Berlin summit, which aims to halt the conflict in oil-rich Libya that is being fueled by competing international support for the warring sides.. Separately, the Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin would be attending the meeting in Germany. Turkey, which has promised to send troops to back Libyas government against Hifters offensive, is at odds with Greece over oil-and-gas drilling rights in the East Mediterranean. In November, Turkey and the Libyan government in Tripoli signed a controversial maritime deal delineating a boundary between the two countries in the Mediterranean. Libya has been divided between two competing governments since 2015, one based in Benghazi in the east and the other ...

Wetlands constitute one of the most important ecosystems on Earth yet two thirds of Europes wetlands have been lost in the past 100 years. Europes wetlands are still under threat from land use change and pollution and are among the most endangered ecosystems. Urbanisation in Mediterranean coastal wetlands has resulted in the destruction or fragmentation of valuable habitats and in particular coastal lagoons are among the most threatened. Careful planning and management of tourism and regional development can contribute to the safeguard of wetlands and also benefit the local community and economy. Oropos lagoon located in NE Attica, Greece, constitutes one of the few remaining wetlands within Attica. Within the last 30 years the original size of the lagoon decreased to nearly half due to urbanization and vehicular trafficking. Currently the lagoon occupies an almost flat coastal area of approximately 65 ha that hosts important bird species and coastal plant communities and continues to be under ...

The financial crisis has had a tremendous impact on Greeces economy, exacerbating existing problems. The health sector has been seriously affected by the economic situation, and the two Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) that Greece has signed since 2010 dictate a series of measures that focus on the reduction of public expenditure. Daphne Kaitelidou and Eugenia Kouli outline some of the main effects the crisis has had on the Greek health system.. In Greece, the negative repercussions of the economic crisis have already led to increased demand for services. Rising unemployment has led to falls in household income, resulting in patients seeking services covered by statutory health insurance funds, rather than paying privately, meaning there are additional pressures on the public health system. Since the beginning of the crisis, the Greek government has had to act to increase contributions to the health system, reduce the coverage of the National Health Services Organisation (EOPYY), and reduce ...

Adiponectin is an adipose tissue secreted protein known for its insulin sensitising and anti-atherogenic actions. To this date two adiponectin receptors have been discovered, adiponectin receptor 1 (ADIPOR1) and adiponectin receptor 2 (ADIPOR2). The aim of this study was to investigate the association of ADIPOR2 gene variations with coronary artery disease (CAD). Eight common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) spanning the entire ADIPOR2 locus were chosen to perform association studies with anthropometric and metabolic parameters in a Greek population. They were classified as either CAD (stenosis |50% in at least one main vessel) or non-CAD individuals in accordance with coronary angiography data. Genotyping was performed using a microsphere-based suspension array and the Allele Specific Primer Extension (ASPE) method. Expression of ADIPOR2 protein and mRNA in circulating CD14+ monocytes were determined using flow cytometry and real time Polymerase Chain Reaction assays respectively. There was a
The OECDs Development Assistance Committee (DAC) conducts periodic reviews of the individual development co-operation efforts of DAC members. The policies and programmes of each DAC member are critically examined approximately once every five years. DAC peer reviews assess the performance of a given member, not just that of its development co-operation agency, and examine both policy and implementation. They take an integrated, system-wide perspective on the development co-operation and humanitarian assistance activities of the member under review.Since its last peer review, a severe economic recession brought about significant cuts to Greeces national budget - including official development assistance. However, Greece has maintained its commitment to development co-operation. In response to the refugee and migration crisis Greece mobilised resources and its population to provide significant support to asylum seekers and refugees, and adapted its domestic policies to create conditions for peaceful co
In some parts of Greece, private hospitals and clinics have begun marketing a medical tourism product. They attempt to sell appointments with staff and consulting physicians, diagnostic tests and surgical procedures. At the same time, spas and thalasso resorts that promote recreational, relaxation and rejuvenation services have been in operation for some time and are themselves responsible for a significant portion of turnover from tourism in Greece. Many have won worldwide recognition on many Best of lists created by industry, magazine publishers, and trade associations. They are fabulous!. Private hospitals in Greece have yet to develop a fully-operational marketing strategy, identify source markets, point advertising and promotion in the direction of those source markets, and round out the product promotion and delivery strategy as well as a measurement and evaluation system to see if it is working. They are the first to admit that they dont really know how to prepare a strategy for ...

Average benzene home and personal levels in six monitoring campaigns varied between 6.0-13.4 and 13.1-24.6 μg/m3, respectively. Urban levels varied between 15.4 and 27.9 μg/m3 with an annual mean of 20.4 μg/m3. Wind speed seems to determine largely home levels and personal exposure. Proximity to busy road holds also an important influence on indoor benzene levels. Adjusted for seasonal or climate variation, other significant prognostic factors of personal exposure were home levels, total time spent outdoors and transportation mean. Time spent outdoors explains the strong relationship between occupation and personal levels of exposure. Wind had similar effect in clearing indoor and urban pollution in Athens; lessen personal exposure and home levels about 2-2.5 μg/m3 per 1 m/s increase in speed.. ...
The smoking habits of 9,276 high-school students (15-18 years old) in six cities of Northern Greece were studied using a questionnaire in order to determine the prevalence and possible risk factors for initiation of smoking. We observed that 29.6% of high-school students (32.6% of boys and 26.7% of girls) were current smokers. A percentage of 43.3% had started smoking before the age of 14. Reactive behaviour towards parents and teachers advice (40.2%) and the existence of smoking friends (40.1%) were the main reasons of initiation. A well-planned integrated anti-smoking campaign is urgently required, especially among students and teachers.
The horse chestnut tree is native to Asia and northern Greece, but it is now cultivated in many areas of Europe and North America. The tree produces fruits that are made up of a spiny capsule containing one to three large seeds, known as horse chestnuts. Modern extracts of horse chestnut are usually made from the seeds, which are high in the active constituent aescin (also known as escin).. Horse chestnut leaves have been used by herbalists as a cough remedy and to reduce fevers. The leaves were also believed to reduce pain and inflammation of arthritis and rheumatism. In traditional herbal medicine, poultices of the seeds have been used topically to treat skin ulcers and skin cancer. Other uses include the internal and external application for problems of venous circulation, including varicose veins and hemorrhoids.. The seeds are the source of a saponin known as aescin, which has been shown to promote circulation through the veins. Aescin fosters normal tone in the walls of the veins, thereby ...
Ptolemy I Soter (; Greek: Πτολεμαῖος Σωτήρ, Ptolemaîos Sōtḗr Ptolemy the Saviour; c. 367 BC - January 282 BC) was a companion and historian of Alexander the Great of the Kingdom of Macedon in northern Greece who became ruler of Egypt, part of Alexanders former empire. Ptolemy was pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt from 305/304 BC to his death. He was the founder of the Ptolemaic dynasty which ruled Egypt until the death of Cleopatra in 30 BC, turning the country into a Hellenistic kingdom and Alexandria into a centre of Greek culture. Ptolemy I was the son of Arsinoe of Macedon by either her husband Lagus or Philip II of Macedon, the father of Alexander. Ptolemy was one of Alexanders most trusted companions and military officers. After the death of Alexander in 323 BC, Ptolemy retrieved his body as it was en route to be buried in Macedon, placing it in Memphis instead, where it was later moved to Alexandria in a new tomb. Afterwards he joined a coalition against Perdiccas, the ...

Detection of autoantibodies giving nuclear rim pattern by immunofluorescence (anti-nuclear envelope antibodies - ANEA) in sera from patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a useful tool for the diagnosis and prognosis of the disease. Differences in the prevalence of ANEA in PBC sera so far reported have been attributed to the methodology used for the detection as well as to ethnic/geographical variations. Therefore, we evaluated the prevalence of ANEA in sera of Greek patients with PBC by using methods widely used by clinical laboratories and a combination of techniques and materials. We screened 103 sera by immunoblotting on nuclear envelopes and indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) using cells and purified nuclei. Reactivities against specific autoantigens were assessed using purified proteins, ELISA, immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry. We found higher prevalence of ANEA when sera were assayed by IIF on purified nuclei or cultured cells (50%) compared to Hep2 commercially available slides

Lesbos became known as an all-European model for solidarity. Resisting the xenophobia that was growing in Greece and in Europe as a whole, the citizens of Lesbos reached out to the refugees, refusing to listen to those who were promoting hate. The neo-fascist anti-immigrant party known as Golden Dawn gained less support in recent elections in Lesbos than in most other parts of Greece.. The good will of the people of Lesbos is currently being tested by the wave of migrants arriving on our shores. According to estimates, more than 20,000 refugees have arrived in our island alone in the first five months of 2015. There are no systems in place to deal with them.. Yes, the European Community has dedicated resources to the refugee problem, but most of that has gone into patrolling the borders in hopes of stemming the flood of refugees-not to helping those who arrive on European shores.. Those who arrive in northern Lesbos are currently being welcomed and fed by volunteers, but the Coast Guard does ...

Greece has been on a charm campaign here in the United States, and considering its deep economic woes, you can imagine why. In the five years since we last conducted a broad tasting of Greek white wines, they have stepped from a curious and ambitious side note to something truly exciting. The usual smattering of nonnative grapes has appeared, too; Sauvignon Blanc has become a power player, more welcome than Chardonnay, perhaps, but something of a lost point amid Greeces indigenous grape bounty. Modern Moschofilero may be a mid-grade response to Albarino, but it is hard not to see the truth of terroir in the Assyrtiko grape, with its vines curled in basket-like coils to capture moisture and survive on the arid isle of Santorini. 2011 Gaia Estate Thalassitis Santorini Assyrtiko ($26, 13%): With wineries in both Nemea and Santorini, Gaia offers a perfect snapshot of modern Greek wine, and its Thalassitis is its calling card, the height of winemaking applied to Santorinis terroir.
