Breast carcinoma rarely occurs in cases of foreign body granulomas following liquid silicone injection. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the use of all silicone injection products in 1992, liquid silicone injection for breast augmentation continues to be performed illegally. We herein report a case of breast carcinoma following liquid silicone injection in a 67-year-old female. A total of 45 years after liquid silicone injection, the patient had felt a breast mass in the right breast. Mammography showed a smooth mass that retracted the right nipple. Due to the presence of a marked acoustic shadow caused by the granulomas, evaluating the mass on ultrasonography was difficult. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a lobulated mass under the right nipple. The mass exhibited low signal intensity (SI) on T1-weighted images and intermingled high and low SI on T2-weighted images. Heterogeneous early enhancement with central low intensity was noted on dynamic contrast-enhanced
A close exposure of the eyes of synthetic materialused in stuffed toy animals, blankets, beddings andpullover sweaters may cause penetration of the conjunctivaby synthetic fibres. Usually, foreign bodies, that comes into contact with the ocular surface areremoved by the eye protective mechanisms as blinkingand tearing (2, 4, 5). Occasionally, foreign bodiesmay be retained in the eyelid fornix, encapsulated bythe mucous, embedded in the underlying stroma andmay induce a local inflammatory response (6, 7, 8).This may cause synthetic fibre granuloma formation inthe conjunctiva, which condition is commonly knownas „teddy bear granuloma because of the origin ofthe synthetic fibres (1, 2).. Foreign body granulomas of the conjunctiva causedby synthetic fibres were first described by Weinbergand associates, in 1984.3 Since then eighteen caseshave been reported in the literature (1). The ages ofthe reported patients ranged from 26 months to 17years (2, 3). The granulomas usually were presented asa ...

Discussion. The foot is the second-most common location for retained foreign bodies.3 Such retention is especially frequent in developing countries where walking barefoot is very common. Thus the feet are at risk for trivial injuries, which can result in inflammation or infection.4 The foreign bodies most often retained in the hand and foot are thorns, glass, needles or wooden fragments. Retention of these foreign bodies results in a soft-tissue or bony granuloma.5 A retained foreign body can present in numerous ways, including mechanical dermatitis, cellulitis, abscess, foreign-body granuloma, peritendonitis, tendonitis, pericapsulitis, synovitis, acute septic arthritis or chronic monoarticular non-suppurative inflammation. Many aetiologies have been described to explain the pathogenesis in the sudden flare-up after a period of latency: low-grade infection, protein coating of the foreign body, toxins, mitogens in the foreign body and the crystalline structures of the foreign bodies.1 Taking a ...
Charcoal, also called black carbon, is used for preoperative localization of tumor (mainly for breast tumors) or needle track localization after biopsy (mainly sarcomas biopsy, due to a potential risk of tumor seeding along needle track with this type of tumor).. Foreign-body granulomas can lead to false-positive findings of FDG PET/CT due to strong FGD uptake. On unenhanced CT, granulomas can show variable configurations, as delimited oval or round shape, or amorphous and linear configuration. Charcoal-induced granulomas usually show a spontaneous high attenuation, due to the high density of carbon particles, and no remarkable enhancement after contrast injection. On US studies, charcoal granulomas are characterized as irregular-shaped lesions, most often with hyperechogenicity and posterior shadowing. On the contrary, tumor recurrences often appear hypoechoic.. As described by Jin Woo Choi, charcoal is known to be a safe and biologically inert material when injected subcutaneously and may ...

Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are preferred vehicle for nano drug delivery in cancer therapy. However, the effects of SWCNTs alone in vivo situations are not well explored. Thus, the need of the hour is to find out SWCNTs induced cellular reactions within the organism using standard neurotoxicological approaches. Since military personnel are often inflicted with brain or spinal cord injury during combat operations either by gunshot, missile explosions, fall or direct blunt or sharp trauma to their CNS inducing life threatening illnesses, we have undertaken a series of investigation to study nanodrug delivery and its consequences in animal models using in vivo research. We found that SWCNTs alone induced potential neuronal injuries that is size and dose related indicating a need to find out co-administration of suitable drugs to reduce SWCNTs induced brain pathology in vivo. In this connection Cerebrolsyin, a balanced composition of several neurotrophic factors and active peptide fragments is

We thank you very much for allowing us to respond to the letter by Marchiori et al1 submitted in response to our recently published paper titled Parasitic infections of the lung: a guide for the respiratory physician.2. We agree with the authors that the condition may be a difficult diagnostic challenge, but in textilomas (gossypibomas) there is nearly always a history of previous surgery. In a fairly large series of CT scans performed on textilomas, Kopka et al3 observed that in seven patients gas bubbles were found inside the textiloma with a typical pattern. These patients did not have any abscess formation; however, it is interesting to note that the radio-opaque marker inside a textiloma was seen in nine patients but did not lead to a diagnosis in all of them. The authors also found that, from in vitro studies, gas bubbles were demonstrated in all surgical sponges scanned 1 hour afterwards. It is interesting that the number of gas bubbles were not significantly reduced after 6 months. CT ...

The Raman D-band feature (∼1350 cm[-][1]) is examined with 2.54 eV excitation for pure bulk carbon single-wall nanotube samples before and after treatments that increase defect densities. Upon employing mass-transport-limited oxidation to introduce defects, the D-band intensity increases approximately linearly with reaction time. A relatively constant ratio of the D-band intensity and the major tangential G-band intensity (D/G) is observed for the purified samples examined at 2.54 and 1.96 eV suggesting a characteristic number of defects is introduced for given synthesis and purification processes. The DIG ratio is ∼1/90 and 1/40 for excitation at 2.54 and 1.96 eV, respectively ...

This invention relates generally to a forming an array of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in an electric field and compositions thereof. In one embodiment, a purified bucky paper of single-wall carbon nanotubes is used as the starting material. Upon oxidative treatment of the bucky paper surface, many tube and/or rope ends protrude up from the surface of the paper. Disposing the resulting bucky paper in an electric field results in the protruding tubes and or ropes of single-wall carbon nanotubes aligning in a direction substantially perpendicular to the paper surface. These tubes tend to coalesce to form a molecular array. In another embodiment, a molecular array of SWNTs can be made by combing the purified bucky paper starting material with a sharp microscopic tip to align the nanotubes ...
Given the PET-CT findings, supplementary examination revealed no visual abnormality however these calcifications were palpable. The patient provided an added history that she had silicone dermal injections for facial rejuvenation six months prior.. Besides their use for facial rejuvenation, injectable dermal fillers are used for HIV-associated facial lipoatrophy, Romberg disease, and post-surgical/traumatic facial disfigurement [1]. Dermal fillers demonstrate an increased FDG uptake which is non-specific. Complications from dermal fillers include cellulitis, non-inflammatory nodules, foreign body granulomas, non-granulomatous inflammation, and abscess. These are all hypermetabolic on PET-CT and are of similar appearance to uncomplicated injectable dermal fillers. This FDG uptake is due to increased glycolysis in macrophages. Acutely, a mild degree of inflammation occurs with most types of fillers and is usually transient [3]. This increased FDG uptake may decrease and even disappear with time, ...
On December 20, 2011, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced it issued the worlds first reference material for single-wall carbon nanotube soot. According to NIST, nanotube-laden soot is the primary industrial source of single-wall carbon nanotubes, perhaps the archetype of all nanoscale materials. NIST states that the new material offers companies and researchers a badly needed source of uniform and well-characterized carbon nanotube soot for material comparisons, as well as chemical and toxicity analysis. ...
This invention relates generally to a method for growing single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) from seed molecules. The supported or unsupported SWNT seed materials can be combined with a suitable growth catalyst by opening SWNT molecule ends and depositing a metal atom cluster. In one embodiment, a suspension of seed particles containing attached catalysts is injected into an evaporation zone to provide an entrained reactive nanoparticle. A carbonaceous feedstock gas is then introduced into the nanoparticle stream under conditions to grow single-wall carbon nanotubes. Recovery of the product produced can be done by filtration, centrifugation and the like ...
C59N magnetic fullerenes inside single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are used to probe the density of states (DOS) on the host tubes using electron spin resonance (ESR). The C59N radicals are separated by C60 fullerenes to prevent dimerization and C59N-C60 heterodimers are formed at low temperatures. The electron spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, of the heterodimers is deduced from the homogeneous ESR line-width. The analysis is supported by saturation ESR studies. The inverse of the heterodimer T1 follows a linear behavior in the 20-300 K temperature range, the so-called Korringa law, evidencing a metallic DOS on all tubes in a bundle. An important technique to increase the solubility and reactivity of carbon nanotube is through functionalization. In this study, the effects of functionalization of some single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were investigated with the aid of density functional theory. The SWCNT model used in the study consists of a finite, (5, 0) zigzag nanotube segment containing 60 C atoms with hydrogen atoms added to the dangling bonds of the perimeter carbons. There are three water-dispersible SWCNTs used in this study that were functionalized with (a) formic acid, as a model of carboxylic acid, (b) isophthalic acid, as a model aromatic dicarboxylic acid, and (c) benzenesulfonic acid, as a model aromatic sulfonic acid. Binding energies of the organic radicals to the nanotubes are calculated, as well as the HOMO-LUMO gaps and dipole moments of both nanotubes and functionalized nanotubes. Binding was found out to be thermodynamically favorable. The functionalization increases the electrical dipole moments and
Field emission properties of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) grown on iron catalyst film by plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition system were studied in diode configuration. The results were analysed in the framework of Fowler-Nordheim theory. The grown SWCNTs were found to be excellent field emitters, having emission current density higher than 20 mA/cm{sup 2} at a turn-on field of 1.3 V/μm. The as grown SWCNTs were further treated with Oxygen (O{sub 2}) plasma for 5 min and again field emission characteristics were measured. The O{sub 2} plasma treated SWCNTs have shown dramatic improvement in their field emission properties with emission current density of 111 mA/cm{sup 2} at a much lower turn on field of 0.8 V/μm. The as grown as well as plasma treated SWCNTs were also characterized by various techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy before and after O{sub ...

Single-wall carbon nanohorns (SWCNHs), which have multitudes of horn interstices, an extensive surface area, and a spherical aggregate structure, offer many advantages over other carbon nanomaterials being used as a drug nanovector. The previous studies on the interaction between SWCNHs and cells have mostly emphasized on cellular uptake and intracellular trafficking, but seldom on epithelial cells. Polar epithelium as a typical biological barrier constitutes the prime obstacle for the transport of therapeutic agents to target site. This work tried to explore the permeability of SWCNHs through polar epithelium and their abilities to modulate transcellular transport, and evaluate the potential of SWCNHs in drug delivery. Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell monolayer was used as a polar epithelial cell model, and as-grown SWCNHs, together with oxidized and fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated bovine serum albumin-labeled forms, were constructed and comprehensively investigated in vitro and in vivo.

There are two theories for the development of a cholesterol granuloma. In the obstruction-vacuum theory, Eustachian tube dysfunction is thought to cause mucosal edema, which can result in repeated episodes of bleeding and subsequent formation of cysts surrounding the blood. The cysts gradually expand.. In the exposed marrow theory, on the other hand, hyperplastic mucosa is thought to invade underlying bone and expose the bone marrow, which, in turn, bleeds.. Either way, a combination of trapped blood and a surrounding chronic inflammatory response lead to the formation of a cholesterol granuloma. In our patient, the etiology is most likely related to Eustachian tube obstruction caused by previous surgery and radiation for a trigeminal schwannoma.. Histologically, cholesterol granulomas contain yellow-brown fluid consisting of cholesterol crystals, red blood cells, and blood break-down products.. Cholesterol granulomas are surrounded by a fibrous tissue capsule and can be located in any part of ...

Autori: Yuan Chen, Dragos Ciuparu, Sangyun Lim, Yanhui Yang, Gary L. Haller and Lisa Pfefferle. Editorial: Journal of Catalysis, 225(2), p.453-465, 2004.. Rezumat:. Catalyst pretreatment and CO disproportionation reaction conditions were observed to strongly affect the diameter uniformity of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) grown on Co-MCM-41 catalysts. The prereduction and CO disproportionation reaction temperatures were varied systematically while the carbon loading and the SWNT diameter uniformity were monitored by TGA, Raman spectroscopy, and TEM. The state of the catalyst during prereduction and the size of the cobalt clusters formed during the SWNT growth process were monitored by in situ XANES during the prereduction of the Co-MCM-41, and ex situ EXAFS of catalyst samples was performed after carbon deposition. These experiments allow development of correlations between the SWNT quality and the state of the catalyst. Control of the cobalt cluster size in the Co-MCM-41 catalyst is ...

Clinical evaluations and diagnosis of foreign body reactions pose a challenge as they depend on the type of foreign body involved, the duration of its presence, symptoms associated and the clinical picture.. A careful evaluation of the radiographs is essential as the foreign bodies have different radiodensities, sizes and shapes. Their appearance is influenced by a number of factors which include its power to attenuate the x-ray beam which determine its radiodensity, superimposition of these objects with the anatomic hard tissue structures and the exposure parameters. 10 Any materialistic substance which is not naïve to the human body is a foreign object and will evoke an immune response as a foreign body reaction resulting in a granuloma formation. There are circumstances in which the substances that provoke the acute inflammatory reaction are particulate and larger than the phagocytes and could not be digested by the reacting neutrophils causing a response namely granulomatous inflammation. ...

Granuloma is a term in medical dictionary for a minute collection of immune cells which are known as macrophages. Granulomas figure while the immune system tries to wall off substances which it recognizes as foreign body but is not capable to remove. Such substances comprise infectious organisms like bacteria and fungi and other materials like sutureas well as keratin fragments. So, a granuloma is a particular kind of inflammation that can take place in a wide various kind of diseases. The adjective granulomatous means distinguishing by granulomas. All granulomas may contain extra cells and matrix. These contain neutrophils, lymphocytes, multinucleated giant cells, eosinophils, fibroblasts and collagen (fibrosis).. ...

Both divinyl benzene copolymer (plastic) beads and schistosome eggs produce inflammatory reactions after intravenous deposition into the lung of a mouse. As reported previously, the schistosome egg granuloma is an immunologic reaction of the delayed hypersensitivity type; this inflammatory process is prevented by immunosuppressive measures, and characteristically demonstrates an anamnestic response. In contradistinction, the plastic bead granuloma appears to be characteristic of a foreign body reaction; it is unaffected by immunosuppressive measures and does not demonstrate an anamnestic response with repeated exposure. The data in this report suggest that the granuloma formation around plastic beads is a nonimmunologic reaction induced by chemical mediators of inflammation. This proposal is supported by the following findings: the plastic beads activate Hageman factor in normal human and mouse plasma; the plastic beads induce vascular permeability-enhancing activity as measured in guinea pig ...

The album opens with Throes of Death, and it opens with a surprisingly slow build up. This is not to say it takes its time to establish itself though, as not far into it we are treated to the heavily thrash influenced sounds that is OSDM. It features great riffs and unique progression that does not feel incredibly randomly strewn together, however it does not feel incredibly unique truthfully. While relatively masterfully made and composed, it does feel like it simply is a composite of previously created death metal albums from the late 80s of Death Metal. There is also the matter of mastering, in which I feel it could have been done better.
