Making Education Work for the Middle Class. A) Simplify the Department of Education by Block Granting Most of its Budget to the States. Ron Paul, Rick Perry and Herman Cain all tried appealing to conservatives in the primaries in 2012 with the simple-minded proposal that we should simply abolish entire Federal departments. There is a certain libertarian appeal toward deleting expensive and useless departments with good-sounding mandates but bad results. We get that. But the public - the conservative public - rejected such notions and elected the guy that wanted to streamline the government and increase state power in an attempt to make government work properly, rather than giving up on government entirely. We believe most in the middle class want to see their government achieve results, rather than gambling that the results will happen naturally without government interference. We believe the GOP must embrace the notion of governing. One way to do that, is to let the states make decisions about ...

Regulation of alcohol in the United States uses a three-tiered system that perpetuates big businesss control on the alcohol industry and has helped maintain a cartel-like hold on the marketplace ever since the end of alcohol prohibition in 1933. The power the distributor has on the market cannot be underestimated. In order for alcoholic products to be sold, the law requires you to go through a distributor who has been licensed by the state to sell to the retailer. This means if you decide to import or start up a brewery, youll have to acquire a distributor license yourself and deal with the subsequent overhead cost associated with it. The other option is signing a contract with an existing distributor who will sell your beer while expanding their own distributing network. The cost here is perpetuating the control big business has on the alcohol industry. Laws regarding alcohol vary depending on which US state you reside in but generally, its required by law to ONLY sell beer to properly ...
Like most things the government does, its approach to fixing the auto industry/energy/environment problem is broken. Badly broken. Wrong-headed. Misguided. Appallingly stupid. And sad. It always amazes me that when we have an industry more-or-less crippled by poorly thought out government regulation, the answer to fixing it is in more government regulation. What a concept.. Recent polls show that only 26% of Americans think the governments plan to bail out GM is a good idea, and only 42% of GM car owners are even somewhat likely to buy GM again. Clearly, most of us dont think were on the right track for fixing this mess. But there are things that can be done, and the industry can survive and progress without massive government meddling, spending, and regulation.. So heres my 7-step plan for addressing the auto industry/environment/energy situation. Amazingly, theres not one single step that requires new regulation or money for the auto industry. Manufacturers in the healthcare industry are facing a mix of cost and pricing pressures, from government regulations to changes in how hospitals pay for their goods. The solution: Companies will have to work smarter and more efficiently to keep up.. Makers of medical devices and equipment are feeling the squeeze. Research published last year by Emergo Group, a consulting firm for the medical device industry, revealed that pricing pressure is a big concern for these companies. About one-third of executives said pricing pressure is a top challenge facing their business. Among companies with 250 or more employees, 61% said pricing pressure was among their biggest challenges.. Where is the pressure coming from? It starts at the top, with government regulation. Perhaps the biggest example is themedical device excise tax enacted in 2013 as part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The 2.3% tax has led 43.5% of companies to adjust their operations in some way-by raising prices, investing less in research ...

Changes in government policy, legislation (including tax) or regulatory interpretation applying to companies in the financial services and insurance industries in any of the markets in which Prudential operates, which in some circumstances may be applied retrospectively, may adversely affect Prudentials product range, distribution channels, capital requirements and, consequently, reported results and financing requirements. Also, regulators in jurisdictions in which Prudential operates may change the level of capital required to be held by individual businesses or could introduce possible changes in the regulatory framework for pension arrangements and policies, the regulation of selling practices and solvency requirements. Furthermore, as a result of the recent interventions by governments in response to global economic conditions, it is widely expected that there will be a substantial increase in government regulation and supervision of the financial services industry, including the ...

First off, there is a problem with this reasoning. Not every human being responds the same to every chemical substance. Every human body is different; you know that simply from hearing about individuals allergic reactions-one is allergic to cats or penicillin, another is not. So you know the reasoning is off. One shoe does not fit every foot. Likewise one vaccine may be safe for one individual and cause autism for another. There is no vaccine, no medicine that is a sure thing. Drugs and foods and all chemical substances may cause allergic reactions, may induce side effects, create catastrophe or lead to death. There is uncertainty about every chemical that is man made. That is why we have the FDA and government regulation and agencies like the CDC to monitor our drug safety and weigh the levels of uncertainty. If a drugs danger risk outweighs its benefits, they will pull the drug and ban it. Unless, of course, government agencies are not independent bodies but are pressured and controlled by ...
Nearly 30 years ago, as a chemistry student I was studying the dangers of trans-fats versus cis-fats. The difference, cis fats are naturally occurring and have health benefits, while trans-fats are man-made and have known adverse effects on heart and overall health. Eventually, there were government regulations placed on manufacturers who included trans-fats in their products but by then much of the damage had been done. Technically, the food industry helped create the obesity crisis and contributed to the rise in cardiovascular disease as well as diabetes.
My body, my choice! My body, my choice! The popular slogan chanted by pro-choice supporters during pro-life gatherings is a defiant declaration to all anti-abortion advocates and lawmakers, a womans uterus is off limits to any and all government regulations. Its a statement which - supposedly - represents freedom for all women to decide the fate of an unborn child. Yet, upon a closer review, when you compare the phrase with how abortion supporters actually apply it, the freedom to choose is not what the phrase represents. If abortion supporters were really about choice, they certainly wouldnt be offended by those who believe that every child… Keep Reading ...
Perception: Drones are as easy to use as smartphones.. Reality: Enterprise drones are a different class than hobbyists toys. Just operating them commercially requires training, certification, and compliance with emerging government regulations. To fully utilize them in industrial applications and maximize their business value requires deep integration into existing business processes and workflows, a thorough understanding of their data security implications, and expertise in flight operations and fleet management.. When we call a capitalist society a consumers democracy we mean that the power to dispose of the means of production, which belongs to the entrepreneurs and capitalists, can only be acquired by means of the consumers ballot, held daily in the marketplace.. ~ Ludwig von Mises. Regulations are nothing but government-imposed standards enforced at gunpoint. If you do not believe that this happens at gunpoint, feel free to defy any and all government regulation and then defend your property when they come to fine or jail you: the guns will appear. Regulations violate your property rights. As a sovereign individual, you should be free to enter into any voluntary contract with customers. If the contract has terms that you deem beneficial, you can sign it; if it does not, then you can freely reject it and find another option. If you are the entrepreneurial kind, you can start your own business and compete against those whom you felt were not up to par.. Government regulations cause chaos. Recently, ...
This is the result of parents demanding too much government involvement in keeping us safe. Many parents were doing what worked, conscientiously shopping for quality. But because many feel that the government needs to be heavily involved in child safety, the government has responded favorably and gotten involved. You either want broad government regulation of toy safety or you dont. Personally I dont. I feel competent to make smart choices for my family all by myself. You can read his further points here. In fact I agree with many of Krugmans observations in what I thought was overall a useful post. Its just that I think a lot of other viewpoints are living in a fantasy world too.. That said, Krugman grossly underestimates the costs of government regulation. For one thing, government regulations are a major obstacle to the infrastructure improvements which Krugman is so keen on. To use Krugmans own pick of the cherry, he wrote another post defending the DMV for its on-line service and reasonable wait times. It was not always so, but on top of that lets not forget the Virginia DMV just tried to put Uber and other ride-sharing services out of business (Krugman himself wrote rapturously about Uber a few weeks ago and how it held out the promise of a society with diminished car ownership in some locales. I say bring it on.) Fortunately the regulators were temporarily overriden in this case, although they may reemerge as an obstacle in a subsequent bargain. ...

Biotechnology R& D Spending Is Being Scaled Back Already drug companies have begun to hold the line on R& D expenditures in expectation of lower earnings. This is having a direct effect not only on their own development efforts, but on their commitment to biotechnology. As a recent Wall Street Journal article noted, leaks and policy trial balloons are helping to wreck havoc on small biotechnology firms. 28 As a result, many promising therapies are being shelved because of a growing lack of resources and a concern about price controls. One executive put it this way:. We know that our ACE inhibitor has promise in preventing hardening of the arteries but we cant commit the resources to prove its effectiveness. The fact is, generics are coming on the market and they will grab more business. We will never get our investment back on such a project.. Henri Temeer, Chairman of Genzyme and one the pioneers of the biotechnology business, believes that price controls will lead to dumbing down ...

HB 815 amendment 1 & 2 and HB 1263 amendments 5 & 6 were passed out of the Illinois Senate Public Health Committee last night, advancing to the full Senate floor for a debate and possible approval later today. As we highlighted yesterday, the legislation would ban a plethora of firearms including semiautomatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns, and pump action shotguns, forcing residents to register them with State Police as a pre-cursor to confiscation. The two bills, which are being spearheaded by Democratic Senate leader John Cullerton and have a 50-50 chance of passage, would also severely restrict private gun ranges by placing them under government regulation. If passed the bills would ban most all semi-auto handguns, rifles, and shotguns as well as pump rifle and shotguns. According to Budget 2021, the federal government proposes to impose excise duties on vaping products under the EA.8 This new duty would apply to vaping liquids that are produced or imported into Canada for use in a vaping device, whether or not they contain nicotine. Cannabis vaping products would be exempt from this duty, as they are already dutiable under the EA as cannabis products. There would be certain other exemptions, such as for vaping products (i) taken for analysis or (ii) destroyed in accordance with government regulations.. Proposed duty rate. The proposed framework would impose a one-time flat fee on every 10 milliliters (ml) of vaping liquid. The 2021 budget does not specify the exact rate of duty, but proposes a rate of duty which could be in the order of $ 1.00 per 10 ml or fraction thereof, in an immediate container (that is, ie the container containing the liquid itself) . This duty would be imposed and payable at the time of packaging for final retail sale, with the last ...
British Petroleum Visionaries. by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, Editor of NaturalNews.com, Tuesday, May 25, 2010. (NaturalNews) The Gulf of Mexico oil catastrophe, now in its 35th day, has struck land, coating tourist beaches, marshes and shorelines with a greasy black filth that metaphorically represents the corporate greed that now dominates the U.S. economy. We are all awash in the dark slime of corporations gone bad, and now were paying the price for allowing these companies to dominate our media, our government and our entire economy.. You might think government regulators could have prevented all this, but thats hardly the case. This disaster isnt merely about a government regulation failure; its about what happens when you let corporations rule Washington.. Reporters threatened with arrest by U.S. Coast Guard under orders from BP. British Petroleum has been steamrolling both the federal government and the press over this oil catastrophe in the Gulf. For starters, the U.S. Coast Guard ...
2/6/2015. Call it the largest plan for government regulation that no one can read - at least, the largest in almost five years. This time, though, even Congress cant read it yet, even if they were so inclined. The plan comes from FCC chair Tom Wheeler, and it imposes Barack Obamas vision of Net Neutrality by regulatory fiat. FCC commissioner Ajit Pai says to get ready for a government takeover - and lots and lots of new taxes…. …Call this the Nancy Pelosi Method of Regulation.. Yes, this worked out so well five years ago that we should just trust our regulators to keep us away from the fog of controversy. Never mind all of that stuff you learned in civics about representative government, transparency, and accountability…. The complete article, with video, is at Hot Air.. PCIHIPAA, a leading HIPAA compliance solution provider, was named one of 2017s Top 10 Healthcare Solution Providers by Healthcare Tech Outlook.. SANTA MONICA, CA, UNITED STATES, October 11, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ - Patient care is advancing in ways that promise great dividends to both healthcare providers and technology developers. In order to make healthcare more successful, profitable and responsive to patient needs, healthcare organizations are leveraging the power of technology to ensure compliance by changing healthcare trends, guidelines, laws, and government regulations. In fact, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights has conducted random HIPAA audits in 2017, because of the rising number of claims that protected health information has been compromised. As the Office for Civil Rights has become more aggressive with HIPAA enforcement, large settlements have become widespread, and penalties for HIPAA noncompliance are now a recurring reality. It is ...
sic]). But those privileges come at the cost of accepting an extensive and intrusive set of government regulations on official union activity. The result is not only a violation of the rights of employers to refuse to bargain with union reps, but also a substantial government subsidy for conservative unionism as against competing forms of union organizing, like those practiced by anti-establishmentarian, radical unions like the Industrial Workers of the World - tactics like minority unionism (crowded out of the market by government-subsidized majoritarian collective bargaining), wildcat strikes (illegal under the Wagner Act), secondary strikes and boycotts (illegal under the Taft-Hartley Act), general strikes (ditto), union hiring halls (double ditto), and so on. The combination of government privilege with government controls may benefit the select outfits that toe the establishmentarian line and get their hands on the government loot. But it does so at the expense of the goals that those ...

Pharmaceutical company stocks increased between 4 and 9 percent immediately following the election of Donald Trump. Trumps views on reducing government regulations for drug prices provide pharmaceutical companies some relief from the continued scrutiny of their pricing practices. In addition, the defeat of Proposition 61, a measure on the California ballot to lower drug prices for state agencies, was also a win for the pharmaceutical industry, which spent more than $100 million on efforts to defeat the initiative. Analysts speculate both developments may mitigate state efforts to address drug pricing. Peter Loftus and Denise Roland with The Wall Street Journal have the story (subscribers content).. Lawrence J. Nelson: Clinical laboratories that perform genetic analysis are subject to regulations under CLIA to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results they produce from PGD. Government regulation of what may be tested for is quite a different matter. Although the Supreme Court has never decided the issue, persuasive arguments have been made that individuals have a constitutional right to reproduce without interference by the state. To the best of my knowledge, no court has ever held that the state may, consistent with the Constitution, assert any direct control over human embryos that exist in vitro. I find it very difficult to imagine what the states legitimate interest would be in forbidding individuals from deciding which of their embryos are to be implanted following PGD or from determining, in collaboration with the professionals involved, what genetic testing would be done on the embryos.. Arthur L. Caplan: I feel that 3 main laws ought to be in place for PGD: (1) setting ...

International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) is a set of United States government regulations that control the export and import of defense-related goods on the United States Munitions List (USML).
The health of our businesses is (or should be) a concern for all of us. As 2012 is still in its infancy, lets take some time to reflect on new and upcoming regulations. Why? Because regulations are a part of the reason we are stuck between 8 and 9 percent unemployment and why business leaders are so uncertain of our economic future and unwilling to invest in it to create jobs. Its a vicious circle.. This vicious circle has consequences, as explained by Cynthia Magnuson of the National Federation of Independent Business. She indicated that Washingtons recent policies have worsened the three top concerns among employers: healthcare costs, corporate tax complexity, and increased government regulations. Another business leader suggested that we need to drain the regulatory swamp.. Over the past three years, that swamp has gotten deeper. There are currently more than 4,200 proposed federal rules awaiting approval. Those that impact small businesses have increased more than 11% since 2009. The ...
Lightweight materials help to decrease the weight of the vehicle and reduce energy consumption. Technological advancement, worldwide increase in vehicle production and rise in disposable income are the major factors driving the growth of automotive lightweight material market. Government regulation on environmental and standard enforced to cut down CO2 emission and technological evolution are driving the global automotive lightweight materials market. High cost associated with lightweight materials may restrain the growth of automotive lightweight materials market.. Chassis and suspension comprise more than 30% of the overall weight of the vehicle, which creates the huge market for the lightweight materials. The lightweight materials which is used in chassis and suspension are AHSS and aluminum. The plastic materials segment is likely to grow at the fastest rate in the forecast period due to increased usage of plastic in automobile interiors, such as seats, dashboard, instrument panel, and ...
A CSR study has been published on US consumers utilizing what is being described as benchmark data. Researchers started collecting the data back in 1993, and the study reveals that 63% of US consumers are hopeful businesses will take the lead to drive social and environmental change moving forward, in the absence of government regulation. 78% want companies to address important social justice issues, while 87% of consumer polled said they will purchase a product because a company advocated for an issue they cared about.. In addition to this, it has been revealed that 76% of US consumers will refuse to purchase a companys products or services upon learning it supported an issue contrary to their beliefs.. You can download the study here. A summary was also published by Sustainable Brands.. ...
I think it would be presumptuous of me to try and outline all of the issues right now, because I have to confess Im not as well versed in this as perhaps I should be because of my newness to this job. In addition, weve had many things that have required my attention since I have actually gotten on board. Nevertheless, I certainly think we need to look at the full range of possibilities, always leaning in the direction, if we can, that there not be government regulations on the research that is being done. I think there is great benefit, when it doesnt compromise national security, to be able to openly publish results of scientific research. For the time being, and I want to say for the time being, the current policy is just that of the NSDD 189, which we talked about earlier. This particular directive spells out, just about as clearly as anything possibly could, what the position is that research is either classified or it is not classified, but not in-between ...

Madam Speaker, I rise today to express my concern over another example of rampant government regulation.. For seventeen years, the Food and Drug Administration has sought to ignore congressional intent and create a vast new regulatory regime for dietary supplements. Millions of Americans, including many of my constituents and my family, rely on dietary supplements as part of their everyday health maintenance routine. Moreover, they play an important role in ensuring that people take individual responsibility for preventative health care. We all can agree that the FDA should not limit Americans access to dietary supplements….. Last week, the comment period on the FDAs draft guidance closed. Now that theyve heard from the public, and now that Im sure theyve heard from countless Americans who share my concern, I urge them to go back to the drawing board and ensure that they do not limit Americans access to dietary supplements.. ...
A clinical trial is a research study on human volunteers designed to answer specific health questions. The purpose of a clinical trial is to find out whether a medicine or treatment regimen is safe and effective against a specific condition or disease.. Clinical trials compare the effectiveness of the study medicine or treatment against standard, accepted treatment or a placebo. (A placebo is an inactive substance used to compare results with an active substance). Early (phase I) trials establish the safety, toxicity, and safe dosing ranges of a new treatment.. A clinical trial may be sponsored by a government agency, such as the National Institutes of Health, or a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company. All clinical trials are guided by government regulations. These rules make sure that participants are not likely to be harmed and that they fully understand the risks and benefits of participating. ...
Great video.. The guy is definitely off on taxes and regulation. I cant tell if thats because he truly believes those two are superior tools, or because he knows he will never convince a timid, skeptical public without throwing them in with the deal (and pretending hes on board).. But either way, regulation cannot be enforced effectively, let alone efficiently, especially when compared to the alternative of market competition and media exposure. Ironically, the media will bust a company lying to customers (a good thing) and immediately thereafter whine for government regulation (sighhhh). Taxes are indeed theft. And the extra programs that these taxes, these resources, fund are guilty of the same crimes as any other government program and government spending. (i.e. Theft, as you said.). He did, however, brilliantly hit on two points that I had forgotten about long ago. One of them is: But think of the children!! If there is one emotional reflex stopping this issue from being resolved ...
In order for any of the 17 SDGs to be realistically achieved, or for serious progress to be made by 2030, the involvement of non-governmental actors is essential. An approach sufficiently supported by the private sector is more likely to succeed than a governmental approach on its own. The SDGs require action on every level of society and government regulations and contributions alone are not pervasive enough.. According to a 2016 Brookings report, private investments and financial flows have drastically increased over the past two decades. Official Development Assistance (ODA), donated by governments now accounts for just 10% of financial flows; private flows comprise the remaining 90%. Furthermore, a Sustainable Development Solutions Network (a Global Initiative for the UN) Report explains that the SDGs compel a global partnership, one in which states must coordinate and cooperate with multinational businesses in order for the SDGs to be realistically achieved. Although the success of this ...

This study aims to determine the extent of the Important Role of Leadership in dealing with the Corona Virus Pandemic (COVID 19) where researchers use research methods in the literature and this type of research is descriptive, which describes the characteristics of a phenomenon that can be used as a basis for decision making to solve problems in a study. The implementation of the policy of applying Large Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) which based on Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) No. 1 of 2020 which focuses on controlling economic stability amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Of course, this Perppu is finally considered too ignoring the public health element in the face of a pandemic. Hopefully the researchers hope that the government as a leader in this country continues to try to improve the cure rate and reduce the death rate due to Covid 19 so that Indonesia will bounce back and improve its economy.. ...
In our current economic state of government regulation, even the most careful businesses can be susceptible to state and federal government-initiated lawsuits and administrative actions, toxic tort lawsuits, including putative class actions, and lawsuits instituted by non-governmental organizations (
Rather than complaining about litigiousness, or the New York Times, why not do an honest piece about corporate responsibility, or lack thereof which is the real issue at hand. I havent read anything that disputes the impact of whisk(e)y production on the growth of the Baudoinia fungus. So there seems to be broad agreement that the spread of the fungus is a mess that is created by the distilling industry. Why them shouldnt the burden of mitigating this impact be borne by the industry that profits from its creation? Honest allocation of the real cost of industrial impacts on society should the cornerstone of a free market society. This can be done one of several ways, through government regulation, through the courts, or through a industry pro-actively taking responsibility for their impacts and voluntarily bearing the costs of their mitigation. If the bourbon industry doesnt want to be sued or regulated then why cant they take responsibility for the mess the fungus makes in the surrounding ...

Id like to join in on the blame game that has come to define our national approach to the ongoing environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. This isnt BPs or Transoceans fault. Its not the governments fault. Its my fault. Im the one to blame and Im sorry. Its my fault because I havent digested the worlds in-your-face hints that maybe I ought to think about the future and change the unsustainable way I live my life. If the geopolitical, economic, and technological shifts of the 1990s didnt do it; if the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 didnt do it; if the current economic crisis didnt do it; perhaps this oil spill will be the catalyst for me, as a citizen, to wean myself off of my petroleum-based lifestyle. Citizen is the key word. Its what we do as individuals that count. For those on the left, government regulation will not solve this problem. Governments role should be to create an environment of opportunity that taps into the innovation and entrepreneurialism that define us ...

In mixed market economies, manufacturing occurs under some degree of government regulation.:….^. Remember to take a look at our ...

Wehrmann 2005. An analysis of the land market insitutions in Accra showed that the weakest point is the implementation. The questions now is why are the formal institutions not implemented sufficiently. Apart from limited financial means and human capacities, lack of coordination and cooperation etc. a main problem is the lack of acceptance of formal institutions. This might partly be due to long procedures and high (official as well as inofficial) costs but it also reflects peoples general perception of and attitude towards the state. Whats the reason for it? The negligence of autochthonous institutions and the attempt to replace them by external models (European institutions) have in certain cases resulted in non-acceptance and viola¬tions of government regulations by traditional authorities. Multiple sales of land by different traditional chiefs (head of stools, head of families) and the violation of land use regulations by individuals represent the most common forms of land conflicts. In ...
Science has come a long way with regard to the consideration of sex differences in clinical and preclinical research, but one field remains behind the curve: human statistical genetics. The goal of this commentary is to raise awareness and discussion about how to best consider and evaluate possible sex effects in the context of large-scale human genetic studies. Over the course of this commentary, we reinforce the importance of interpreting genetic results in the context of biological sex, establish evidence that sex differences are not being considered in human statistical genetics, and discuss how best to conduct and report such analyses. Our recommendation is to run stratified analyses by sex no matter the sample size or the result and report the findings. Summary statistics from stratified analyses are helpful for meta-analyses, and patterns of sex-dependent associations may be hidden in a combined dataset. In the age of declining sequencing costs, large consortia efforts, and a number of useful
