In recent years, gold compounds have gained more and more attentions in the design of new metal anticancer drugs. Numerous researches have reported that gold compounds, in addition to their widely studied cytotoxic antitumor effects, also reverse tumor immune escape and directly facilitate the functions of immune cells, leading to enhanced anticancer effects. This review mainly summarizes our current understandings of antitumor effects of gold drugs and their relationships with various aspects of antitumor immunity, including innate immunity, adaptive immunity, immunogenic cell death, and immune checkpoints, as well as their roles in adverse effects. Some recent examples of anticancer gold compounds are highlighted. The property of gold compounds is expected to combine with anticancer immunotherapy, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, to develop new anticancer therapeutic strategies.
Metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) is a newly emerging phenomenon in which the near-field interactions of fluorophores with the plasmons in metallic nanostructures can lead to substantial fluorescence enhancements. In the present study, we have investigated the use of silver-gold nanocomposite (Ag-Au-NC) structures, prepared by the galvanic replacement reaction of silver with gold, as plasmonic substrates for MEF. We have observed significant enhancement in the fluorescence intensities and decrease in the fluorescence lifetimes of two commonly used dyes, ATTO655 and Cy5, using the fabricated Ag-Au-NC substrates. Interestingly, the fluorescence enhancement depends on the amount of residual silver present in the substrates after the galvanic replacement reaction. CZTS nanocrystals have been synthesized by Khare et al. using the thermal decomposition of diethyl dithiocarbamate complexes of copper(II), zinc and tin(IV) in mixtures of oleic acid and octadecene.85 The spherical nanocrystals produced by this method had diameters of 2, 2.5, 5 or 7 nm by HRTEM depending on the decomposition conditions employed. Injection of oleylamine at 150 °C produced nanocrystals of 2 nm diameter. Injection of oleylamine and octadecene at 150 °C gave 2.5 nm nanocrystals. A higher decomposition temperature of 175 °C afforded nanocrystals with diameters of 5 and 7 nm were formed. To avoid the thermal decomposition of the tin precursor under the latter synthetic conditions, it had to be co-injected with oleylamine and octadecene. Oxygen-containing functional groups such as epoxy, hydroxyl, carboxylic, and carboxyl groups have a great influence on the luminescence properties of graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs). Understanding their roles is essential for the design and optimization of GOQD performance. Herein, we investigate the effect of epoxide functional groups in GOQDs on the luminescence mechanism through passivation of the epoxide functional groups using the alkyl ligand oleylamine. Luminescence in the assynthesized GOQDs has two separate origins: intrinsic states derived from localized sp2 carbon subdomains and extrinsic states formed by oxygen-functional groups. When the oleylamine ligand is conjugated on the GOQDs, intrinsic PL emission from the localized sp2 carbon subdomains decreases. Past, present, and future research into hepatic stellate cells (HSCs, also called vitamin A-storing cells, lipocytes, interstitial cells, fat-storing cells, or Ito cells) are summarized and discussed in this review. Kupffer discovered black-stained cells in the liver using the gold chloride method and named them stellate cells (Sternzellen in German) in 1876. Wake rediscovered the cells in 1971 using the same gold chloride method and various modern histological techniques including electron microscopy. Between their discovery and rediscovery, HSCs disappeared from the research history. Their identification, the establishment of cell isolation and culture methods, and the development of cellular and molecular biological techniques promoted HSC research after their rediscovery.
