Aim: To assess the repeatability of Eger macular stressometer (EMS) measures of photostress recovery and determine their association with other measures of visual function.. Methods: EMS photostress recovery time was measured in 90 patients with bilateral exudative age related macular degeneration (AMD), 19 with bilateral atrophic AMD and 47 with both forms of the condition (mean age 79 (SD 13) years). Measurements were made on two occasions separated by 1 year. Intrasession repeatability was assessed by repeating the measures after a 10 minute recovery period at the first visit. Distance visual acuity was measured with a logMAR chart, near visual acuity with a MNRead chart at 25 cm, contrast sensitivity with a Pelli-Robson chart, and the presence of central visual disturbance assessed with an Amsler grid. A questionnaire was used to assess self reported difficulties with glare recovery.. Results: The average EMS recovery time was 11.0 (SD 8.9) seconds, decreasing by 1.6 (5.2) seconds on ...
The results of the present study suggest that MP significantly improves three aspects of visual performance in glare: (1) photostress recovery, (2) disability glare, and (3) visual discomfort. Previous studies of these phenomena 3,19,28,29 used Maxwellian-view optical systems, in which the action of the iris in modulating the amount of light entering the eye is bypassed. In addition, the ability of dark-pigmented irides to absorb more incident light than light-pigmented irides 42 is also discounted by Maxwellian view. The results of the previous studies indicated that visual performance in glare was strongly associated with MP level. However, given that the deleterious effects of glare are strongly dependent on the amount of light reaching the retina, Maxwellian view is a rather artificial situation. In fact, the data from our subjects show that iris constriction diameter during glare exposure ranged from 1.0 to 2.5 mm. This represents a more than sixfold difference in the amount of light ...
Glare Sensitivity is a debilitating loss of visual acuity in bright lighting, such as when near a bright light source or outdoors in bright sunlight. Patients suffering from glare sensitivity will be unable to see the separate contours of brightly lit objects, and their surroundings may merge into a "wall" of bright white. Glare sensitivity may be a symptom of certain eye conditions or could be a temporary side effect from some eye procedures and surgeries.. Glare sensitivity can be a symptom of:. ...

CIE 146:2002 CIE Equations for Disability Glare. Three disability glare equations have been defined to extend the classic Stiles-Holladay equation to take account of the effect of age, the effect of ocular pigmentation and to extend the angular domain over which the equations are valid. They all describe the veiling luminance L veil (in cd/m²) due to a point glare source at an angle Theta (in degrees) to the line of sight that gives rise to an illuminance E glare (in lx) in the plane of the observers eye, and they do so with adequate accuracy within their respective validity domains ...

Purpose: To investigate whether a small angle glare test in a clinical setting can produce and detect a significant decrease in contrast sensitivity with age in normal young and elderly eyes. Methods: Contrast sensitivity (CS), with and without glare, was measured in 20 subjects. The subjects were all fully corrected. CS was measured using the "Freiburg Visual Acuity & Contrast Test" (FrACT) software running on a Macintosh imac (CRT). In our set-up the software uses a 4AFC-method, and the test distance was 4 meters. Glare was induced by a Fostec DCR® II light source with a randomised fiberoptical bundle mirrored into the centre of a Landolt C test target. Full test symmetry was accomplished by using this glare set-up. The test target and the glare source subtended an angle of about 1.3° and 0.2° respectively, yielding a 0.5° glare angle. The target mean luminance was 61 cd/m2 and the illuminance at the eye was 15 lux with glare. Results: We measured 20 subjects (20 to 59 yrs) with no known ...
I read your Digisix review and the somewhat negative Dante Stella review linked to from your web page. I just received a Digiflash today and noticed something that might be a reason for the inconsistency Dante Stella noticed. The measuring gate, or time over which the light is sampled, appears to be very short. I noticed about a 2/3 stop variation when measuring computer screens and under flourescent lights at the US 60Hz standard. Under a flourescent with a bad ballast that flickers visibly, I am getting about 4 stops of variation in the reading. Under steady light, the readings appear to be repeatable to the resolution of the 1/3 stop display.. .... I did some further testing, but without "proper" lab equipment, and posted some notes about the meter on APUG.org under Articles , Equipment Reviews: http://www.apug.org/forums/article.php?a=131 I found that with high frequency flourescent ballasts (probably in the 10-20kHz range, the bulb was unlabeled in that regard), the readings were steady ...

Earlier you saw how we can control tone through exposure--that is, we can darken…a tone by underexposing to put it back to its true dark value.…Remember, your light meter is assuming that everything its pointed at is…middle gray and is trying to calculate exposure settings that will reproduce the…scene as middle gray.…Tone also has an impact on color.…Take a look at our flowers again.…This is a different set than we have used before.…My light meter is looking at them and assuming that they are middle gray, and…its calculating some exposure values to reproduce them as middle gray, and here…is what its coming up with here.… Now, they look pretty good.…They look like colorful flowers. But as I look at the scene with my eye, I see…that they are actually a little darker;…they are a little more saturated than what I am getting here.…If I dial in just a tiny little bit of exposure compensation, I am going to…dial in a 1/3rd-stop exposure compensation and watch what ...
A method for calibrating an electronic vision device, such as a personal glare reduction device, having a darkened spot in its field of view includes the steps of fixing the lens coordinates of the darkened spot to correspond to a calibration site in the field of view, and moving the glare reduction device to place the darkened spot in line with the glare source. A processor evaluates a correction angle on the basis of the new direction to the glare source, as measured by a directional light sensor on the glare reduction device. The apparatus of the invention includes a controller that includes the processor, a memory, a light sensor, and a user interface element.
Correct exposure for digital capture is complicated by several factors, including whether you are shooting raw or JPEG, (or raw + JPEG), and whether your camera has an exposure bias. Determining exposure bias is a required first step on which all other exposure decisions are based.. Exposure bias occurs two ways: the in-camera meter can have a bias, and the sensor response, relative to the ISO setting, can have a bias. To tell which might be occurring, youll need to photograph an 18% gray card with a continuous light source using the cameras meter. Set the camera to raw + JPEG and shoot 1/3 stop brackets from -1 to +1. Next, use a trusted incident light meter to determine the correct exposure and shoot the same brackets. If the in-camera JPEG looks correct for the incident-metered "0" exposure, but the camera-metered "0" exposure looks lighter or darker, then there is an in-camera meter bias. If the histogram of the incident meter "0" setting is not exactly in the middle, then the sensor is ...
But in 2003 a group of researchers from the United Kingdom (with apparently nothing else to do for amusement) built a light source from a "cardboard tube lined with non-conducting aluminised plastic, resulting in a light intensity of 1,100-1,200 Lux at the maternal abdomen as measured with a hand-held light meter." After an ultra-sound confirmed that the fetus was looking forward (really, they did this too) they turned the light on and off. And all this took place while the mother and her in-utero child were lying in a functional MRI scanner, which was used to look for activation of the little fetal brain in response to the light. Of the nine subjects they tortured in this way, one could not be analyzed due to motion, three did not show any significant activation, and five showed significant activation. Oddly, none of the fetal brains that responded showed any activation of the occipital lobe, that part of the brain in which the primary visual cortex is located and which responds to light. ...
In March 2011and June 2012, recruits were incubated at 31, 41, 70, 122 and 226 µmol photons m-2 s-1 under ambient (493 µatm) and high PCO2 (878 µatm). After 5 days, calcification was measured gravimetrically and survivorship estimated as the number of living recruits. Light inside each container was measured twice daily using a small (1 mm diameter) cosine-corrected PAR sensor attached to a pulse amplitude-modulated fluorometer (Diving-PAM, Heinz Walz GmbH, Effeltrich, Germany). The small size of the sensor allowed light to be measured ~1 cm above the coral recruits while they were inside the plastic container and beneath the treatment lids. This sensor was calibrated using a separate light meter (LI-1400 Datalogger fitted with a LI-192 sensor, LI-COR Biosciences).. ...

I cant reproduce the story of this camera since I bought it at ebay. I dont even know how much it costed. I think it was cheap, I am always looking for bargains. For some reason I had to take the lens out and try to repair something. This something was, perhaps, related to the reload of the shutter. But I came to the conclusion that it was not possible for me to repair it and besides a small special spring that cares about the Iris diafragm to keep closed or opened was missing or felt down as I took the lens out. I still had it working with its lens but not always. Other features like light meter or range finder where also not working. The camera stood there until ...

The objective of this study was to determine vulnerability to pattern-related visual stress in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). A total of 20 ME/CFS patients and 20 matched (age, gender) controls were recruited to the study. Pattern-related visual stress was determined using the Pattern Glare Test. Participants viewed three patterns, the spatial frequencies (SF) of which were 0.3 (low-SF), 2.3 (mid-SF), and 9.4 (high-SF) cycles per degree (c/deg). They reported the number of distortions they experienced when viewing each pattern. ME/CFS patients exhibited significantly higher pattern glare scores than controls for the mid-SF pattern. Mid-high SF differences were also significantly higher in patients than controls. These findings provide evidence of altered visual perception in ME/CFS. Pattern-related visual stress may represent an identifiable clinical feature of ME/CFS that will prove useful in its diagnosis. However, further research is required to establish if ...
The arbitrator is not philosophically opposed to the use of non-West Coast comparators, as proposed by the city. once initial comparability on the basis of population is established, however, one must be aware of other factors that may make direct comparison less appropriate (e.g. grossly different economics, standards of living, etc.). The arbitrator does not believe that SB 750s limitation of comparables jurisdiction to communities and cities of similar population size precludes further rational analysis regarding which similarly sized communities are most appropriate for comparison. For example, the Citys overall compensation comparison is seriously skewed by the inclusion of some jurisdictions that have very little beyond gross population in common with Portland, Oregon. The data for the city of New Orleans shows a police compensation rate less than one-half of that of Portland and some 40% below the mean of the other comparators. The rate of compensation of New Orleans police officers ...

Page 1 of 2 - EV to F-Stop conversion - posted in General Discussion: Hello, I shot a 16mm short film yesterday on Double X negative film (ISO 250) and my AC used the EV mode on the light meter by mistake. We were getting an 11 most of the day (which was cloudy and even), which seems to correspond to a 5.6 F stop on our light meter (at a constant shutter speed). Do you think I could save the footage by pushing the film 2 stops or would it be best to sit in on the telecine? thank you...

Raw scores were relative discomfort judgments: the frequency a particular image or image category was chosen as more uncomfortable out of the paired comparisons. These raw scores were then converted into scores on a Thurstone scale (Thurstone, 1927; Tsukida & Gupta, 2011). Each stimulus was compared with each other stimulus N times. The first step was to calculate, for all comparisons between two stimuli A and B, the number of times that stimulus A was judged to be the more uncomfortable. These counts were then converted to probabilities by dividing by the number of comparisons between A and B. The difference between A and B on the discomfort scale was then calculated as the inverse of the standard normal cumulative distribution function. For example, if stimulus A was chosen as the more uncomfortable on half the trials, the calculated difference value is 0. The final discomfort for each stimulus is then given by the mean of the calculated difference in discomfort in comparisons between A and ...
