Genome-wide gene expression profile studies encompass increasingly large number of samples, posing a challenge to their presentation and interpretation without losing the notion that each transcriptome constitutes a complex biological entity. Much like pathologists who visually analyze information-rich histological sections as a whole, we propose here an integrative approach. We use a self-organizing maps -based software, the gene expression dynamics inspector (GEDI) to analyze gene expression profiles of various lung tumors. GEDI allows the comparison of tumor profiles based on direct visual detection of transcriptome patterns. Such intuitive "gestalt" perception promotes the discovery of interesting relationships in the absence of an existing hypothesis. We uncovered qualitative relationships between squamous cell tumors, small-cell tumors, and carcinoid tumor that would have escaped existing algorithmic classifications. Our considerations have strong implications for object recognition and the philosophy of perception in general. In the model of Figure 1C, the visual input is subjected to a bank of filters, each with its fixed receptive field size and profile. In the next stage, the outputs of the filters are integrated (i.e., pooled) leading to more complex feature processing (and larger receptive fields). Object recognition occurs in a truly mechanistic and stereotyped fashion. In fact, the goal and beauty of these models is to explain perception by basic neural circuits, such as linking crowding to pooling, thus breaking down the complex problems of vision into simple, mathematically treatable computations. The holiday started with a visit to Christina Lake and Doug Bell in Falmouth. Weve been meaning to visit them again for ages but its not a place to just drop in, it requires a bit of planning and time to travel. Its always lovely to see them, such good fannish fans, and we seemed to spend the whole weekend gossiping and planning (and eating ice-cream, and drinking cocktails & nice wine and eating) and occasionally talking about books. They have a lovely house with a view of the harbour if you are high enough up. From the attic where we slept you can see a gorgeous panorama but its a ladder and a flight of stairs down to the bathroom, which certainly precludes drinking too much or the temptation to make it the main bedroom. After distinguishing between "trait" and "character," I argue for the value of adopting Theodosius Dobzhanskys 1956 definition and framework for understanding "trait," which holds that traits are just "semantic devices" that artificially impose order on continuous biological phenomena. I elaborate on this definition to distinguish between trait validity (compliance with Dobzhanskys trait definition) and trait utility (usefulness of a trait). As a consequence of this elaboration of the meaning of "trait," it becomes clear that considerations of adaptation, function, homogeneity and natural kinds have clouded discussions of the meaning of "trait" per se. The number of adjudicated delinquents is rising along with the need to develop effective deterrents and rehabilitative programs. Most rehabilitative efforts, when evaluated individually, do not show any significant degree of effectiveness or appreciable decrease in recidivism. Research in other fields suggests that delinquency is a group phenomenon. This study was conducted to examine existing treatment programs for juvenile offenders to determine if recidivism rates were related to differences in counseling theory and methods. The sample consisted of 728 juveniles assigned to three different non-residential programs in southern Arizona. Program A (N=305) was eclectic in its basic counseling theory; program B (N=365) placed emphasis on Gestalt theory; and program C (N=58) stressed Adlerian theory, placing added importance on peer-group techniques. This paper presents a model of applied creativity which identifies the cognitive processes involved, and shows how they are related. Previous concepts of cognition, intelligence and learning are integrated with a number of significant themes in creativity research, and their relationships to the proposed model are discussed. Knowledge apprehension and knowledge utilization are identified as two bi-polar dimensions of cognitive activity involved in creative thinking. These two dimensions form the basis for a dynamic model of applied creativity, which identifies four distinct and successive stages of the creative process called generation, conceptualization, optimization, and implementation. There is no "number" for relative amplitudes for defining when a T wave is "larger-than-it-should-be" for the QRS complex in the same lead. Thats because many factors contribute to appreciating when this situation occurs - including the clinical reality that there can be normal repolarization variants in which T waves look remarkably prominent. Initially in our learning process - interpretation of any tracing is slow, because it takes us lots of time to remember to assess each step in our systematic approach, let alone recognize if something is normal or not. This chapter outlines a specific interpretation of information ethics (IE) as an e-nvironmental ethics. In Section 4.1, I introduce the foundationalist problem in computer ethics (CE). In Section 4.2, I argue that the ethical questions prompted by ICTs put classic macroethics under pressure. In Section 4.3, I propose a model of IE as a macroethics that can deal with ICT-related ethical problems better than other macroethics; and, in Section 4.4, I argue that IE can provide the theoretical foundation for CE. In Section 4.5, I outline the patient-oriented, ontocentric nature of IE. In Section 4.6, I make explicit the four ethical principles supported by IE as a macroethics. In Section 4.7, I defend the view that IE counts as a macroethics rather than a microethics and compare it to other approaches. In Section 4.8, I further clarify the nature of IE as a macroethics by analysing three applications of IE.
The private and public ICT service-provisioning infrastructure is a digital eco-system lacking coordinated engineering and management. The dependability and performance in normal operation with failures having minor consequences, needs to be managed by optimizing the resources allocated to a service. Furthermore, the system (including societal, operation and technical issues) must prepare for restoration of service after a major event such as common software breakdown, security attacks or natural disasters. There is currently no theoretical foundation to control the societal and per service dependability of ICT infrastructure in the digital eco-system. No foundation is established for optimization, consolidated management and provision of this infrastructure, neither from a public regulatory position, nor from groups of autonomous (commercially) co-operating providers positions. Progressive advances in the measurement of complex multifactorial components of biological processes involving both spatial and temporal domains have made it difficult to identify the variables (genes, proteins, neurons etc.) significantly changed activities in response to a stimulus within large data sets using conventional statistical approaches. The set of all changed variables is termed hot-spots. The detection of such hot spots is considered to be an NP hard problem, but by first establishing its theoretical foundation we have been able to develop an algorithm that provides a solution. Our results show that a first-order phase transition is observable whose critical point separates the hot-spot set from the remaining variables. Its application is also found to be more successful than existing approaches in identifying statistically significant hot-spots both with simulated data sets and in real large-scale multivariate data sets from gene arrays, electrophysiological recording and functional

Although devices of all shapes and sizes currently dominate the technological landscape, human-computer interaction (HCI) as a field is not yet theoretically equipped to match this reality. In this article we develop the human-artifact model, which has its roots in activity theoretical HCI. By reinterpreting the activity theoretical foundation, we present a framework that helps addressing the analysis of individual interactive artifacts while embracing that they are part of a larger ecology of artifacts.
