Max Wertheimer (1880-1943), Kurt Koffka (1886-1941), and Wolfgang Köhler (1887-1967) founded Gestalt psychology in the early 20th century.[6] The dominant view in psychology at the time was structuralism, exemplified by the work of Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894), Wilhelm Wundt (1832-1920), and Edward B. Titchener (1867-1927).[7][8] Structuralism was rooted firmly in British empiricism[7][8] and was based on three closely interrelated theories: (1) atomism, also known as elementalism,[8] the view that all knowledge, even complex abstract ideas, is built from simple, elementary constituents, (2) sensationalism, the view that the simplest constituents-the atoms of thought-are elementary sense impressions, and (3) associationism, the view that more complex ideas arise from the association of simpler ideas.[8][9] Together, these three theories give rise to the view that the mind constructs all perceptions and even abstract thoughts strictly from lower-level sensations that are related ...
Our visual world is hierarchically organized. Hierarchical processing is frequently investigated using Navon figures (large letters made up of smaller ones). In young adults, many studies reported faster reaction times (RT) to target letters presented at the global level [i.e., global precedence (GP)]. Furthermore, an age-related decline of this GP has been reported. We tested whether deficits in perceptual grouping via Gestalt laws (Gestalt principles of Proximity and Continuity) might contribute to this decline. In a directed attention task with valid and invalid cues, 20 young (mean age 22) and 20 older (mean age 57) male subjects had to indicate whether a target letter appeared at the global or local level of a Navon figure. The number of local letters forming the global figure was modulated in 5 steps. As expected, during valid trials, young adults showed a GP that linearly increased with increasing numbers of local letters (i.e., GP enhancement). This suggests that GP is related to perceptual

article{897de195-2872-4fbd-a994-ffa44f635d84, abstract = {,p,Gestalt psychology has traditionally ignored the role of attention in perception, leading to the view that autonomous processes create perceptual configurations that are then attended. More recent research, however, has shown that spatial attention influences a form of Gestalt perception: the coherence of random-dot kinematograms (RDKs). Using ERPs, we investigated whether temporal expectations exert analogous attentional effects on the perception of coherence level in RDKs. Participants were presented fixed-length sequences of RDKs and reported the coherence level of a target RDK. The target was indicated immediately after its appearance by a postcue. Target expectancy increased as the sequence progressed until target presentation; afterward, remaining RDKs were perceived without target expectancy. Expectancy influenced the amplitudes of ERP components P1 and N2. Crucially, expectancy interacted with coherence level at N2, but not at ...

The purpose of the present study is to try to establish if perception is a determinate factor of performance on the Bender Gestalt Test. In a study which is attempting to determine the effects of perceptual factors as compared to motor factors on the Bender Gestalt Test, it would seem necessary to separate the two factors.
Gestalt focuses on meeting clients where they are at in the moment and providing support to their experience. At our core, humans are dynamic and adaptive beings always attempting survival. Gestalt refers to this as creative adaptation. Sometimes, however, the way we adapt isnt helpful in all circumstances. We may experience feeling stuck or at an impasse. The therapy session is intended as a safe place to both identify these patterns of adjustment and explore alternate ways of adapting. This is an experiential form of psychotherapy, which may include using exercises to help foster new awareness, understanding and techniques for self support.. Please contact the clinic if you would like to learn more or determine if working together is the right fit for you.. ...
Akiyoshi Kitaoka (北岡 明佳, Kitaoka Akiyoshi, born August 19, 1961) is a Professor of Psychology at the College of Letters, Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan. In 1984, he received a BSc from the Department of Biology, University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba, Japan, where he studied animal psychology (burrowing behavior in rats) and (at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Neuroscience) neuronal activity of the inferotemporal cortex in macaque monkeys. After his 1991 PhD from the Institute of Psychology, University of Tsukuba,[1] he specialized in visual perception and visual illusions of geometrical shape, brightness, color, in motion illusions and other visual phenomena like Gestalt completion and perceptual transparency, based on a modern conception of Gestalt Psychology.[2] ...
The notion of order appears in Gestalt psychology (Koffka, 1935), and is related to arrangements of objects where their relative placement has significance. As such, order may consist of specific regularities (laws), and these may interact synergistically (Wagemans, Wichmann, & de Beeck, 2005). It was suggested that the visual system seeks order (e.g., symmetry) so as to make sense of sensory signals. The ability of the visual system to detect regularities has been proposed as a method of compressing information to reduce redundancy (Attneave, 1954). Gestalt principles considered under this view are functions of the perceptual machinery that group information together and thus provide an economical description of visual reality. Order in the form of repetitive and symmetrical patterns is also aesthetically preferred (e.g., Newell, Murtagh, & Hutzler, 2013) and has been utilized historically for artistic and architectural purposes. In nature, perfect order rarely exists, and the visual system has ...
Genome-wide gene expression profile studies encompass increasingly large number of samples, posing a challenge to their presentation and interpretation without losing the notion that each transcriptome constitutes a complex biological entity. Much like pathologists who visually analyze information-rich histological sections as a whole, we propose here an integrative approach. We use a self-organizing maps -based software, the gene expression dynamics inspector (GEDI) to analyze gene expression profiles of various lung tumors. GEDI allows the comparison of tumor profiles based on direct visual detection of transcriptome patterns. Such intuitive gestalt perception promotes the discovery of interesting relationships in the absence of an existing hypothesis. We uncovered qualitative relationships between squamous cell tumors, small-cell tumors, and carcinoid tumor that would have escaped existing algorithmic classifications. These results suggest that GEDI may be a valuable explorative tool that ...

As directional errors under a fixed 2D visuomotor rotation are known to decrease approximately exponentially (Krakauer et al., 2000), we made separate exponential fits to the sequences of azimuth and elevation errors for each of the adaptation paths. For every path, this fit was done with three parameters: speed of azimuth learning, speed of elevation learning, and the initial offset from the maximal error (see Materials and Methods for details). The dashed lines on Figure 3A show the adaptation paths corresponding to each fit.. As the adaptation paths were very similar in each of the four quadrants (Fig. 3A,B), we flipped all of them to the first quadrant to increase the sample sizes. Average movement trajectories are shown on Figure 4D; the black ticks show the moment after which the trajectories become significantly different (p , 0.05, Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon test applied as described above). Adaptation paths corresponding to the late movement hand positions are shown on Figure 4A (p , 10−10 ...

Depicted are the two tones of a just fourth 3:4 (at frequencies f1 = 3 and f2 = 4 of a normalized frequency scale) after passing through an invented transfer system with a relatively modest quadratic as well as cubic non-linear amplitude characteristic which reduces their original amplitude from 60 dB to about 59 dB. For greater clarity, the original two tones are sine tones, i.e. they possess no overtones, and the transfer system is predominantly linear with just one each quadratic and cubic element added.. We observe that this transfer creates several previously not present tones at different frequencies. The tone at frequency 0 is naturally inaudible; it represents a slight change in air pressure for the duration of the interval. At frequency 1 we notice the difference tone f2 - f1 of the original interval. Its amplitude in this example is about 32 dB lower than that of the interval tones and certainly not easy to detect. At frequency 2, however, we find, as a result of the non-linear ...

The sensorimotor organs of mouth, eyes, ears and limbs measure the distance between one and the other. How far away is what I long for? How near is what has become terrifying? Sometimes the distance feels vast as if meeting is simply impossible. Other times, distance shrinks, offering possibilities to feel part of another. Subjective, relational, and perceived, the experienced distance gently expands, abruptly contracts, lightly envelops, or harshly represses.. The ...
Man! Around twelve years ago I started hitting the heavy bag and lifting weights. Even though I grew up playing a variety of sports (until I got, err sidetracked with less healthy activities in high school) I had previously resisted pumping iron as being a little too meat-headish. It was therefore a pleasant surprise how much I thoroughly enjoyed getting pumped up (okay sorta, genetics has an unfortunate hand in this) while listening to intellectually stimulating works like Break Stuff (yeah Limp Biskit). With weights I discovered a totally fun, healthy obsession- the perfect activity for the off-running days which provided the same mind slowing, endorphin buzz along with ample justification for supersizing my McDs french fries. The only draw back was that I had no clue what the hay I was doing - you know like proper form - and managed to tweak the hay out of my lower back.. It got so bad I considered putting the kibosh on activities like weights, running, combing hair, brushing teeth, and ...

Our considerations have strong implications for object recognition and the philosophy of perception in general. In the model of Figure 1C, the visual input is subjected to a bank of filters, each with its fixed receptive field size and profile. In the next stage, the outputs of the filters are integrated (i.e., pooled) leading to more complex feature processing (and larger receptive fields). Object recognition occurs in a truly mechanistic and stereotyped fashion. In fact, the goal and beauty of these models is to explain perception by basic neural circuits, such as linking crowding to pooling, thus breaking down the complex problems of vision into simple, mathematically treatable computations. This stereotypical procedure is aimed to naturalize, (i.e., replace) the subjective aspects of vision, such as grouping and good Gestalt. However, our results challenge this view. It seems that a flexible grouping stage cannot be avoided (flexible in the sense that subtle changes in the spatial layout ...
In keeping with this semesters mission to Communicate the Relevance of our work to diverse audiences TPC coordinator Danve Castroverde (He Lab) will introduce us to the CommKit from the Broad Institute. Danve will use the CommKit as a Guide to lead a discussion on Figure Design & Creation. The CommKit is a collection of guides to successful communication in the biological sciences, written by the BRCL Fellows. Their goal is to share how we, as graduate students, postdocs, and research scientists, think about conveying technical information to a range of audiences. For example, take these two quotes from the CommKits Figure Design section:. Figures are any visual presentation of your results and they come in a variety of forms. Graphs, diagrams, photos, drawings, schematics, and maps are all types of figures. Despite this variety, the purpose of all figures is the same - to provide evidence to support your message.. From Between Magic and Logic: The Perceptual Art of Edna Andrade, by Joe Houston:. Andrades interest in visual perception was made emphatic in the dazzling Color Motion-64 (1964) (plate 9), a singular work that portended a dramatic shift in her practice. Despite the title, the painting is composed entirely of dramatic contrasts of black and white laid out in checkerboard fashion across the square format of her canvas (any color we may experience is a perceptual anomaly). The equivalent values of the black and white squares provide the ultimate stasis between figure and ground or positive and negative forces. Gestalt psychologists, whom Andrade was reading at the time, invoked this motif as the ultimate either/or structure: either the white squares are perceived as advancing to the foreground, or they are seen as advanced to the background; the organizing mind must choose one or the other of those possibilities at any given instant, even if it teeters back and forth between those two modes. ...
A couple of years back, I was in a 9 month training program called Shamanic Soul Coaching™, created by Francesca Gentille. This method is her own, created from her own personal experiences, and her experience with a number of other psychological and shamanic systems (e.g., Inner Voice Dialogue, Gestalt, Shamanic Depth Psychology, Shamanic Soul Retrieval, Jungian Psychotherapy, and Caroline Myss:Sacred Contracts.) It also bears some resemblance to another system that Francesca did not study, called the Internal Family Systems Model. Each of these systems can work well for some people; each of them have their own flavor and particular applications. One thing all of them share, is that they agree that within each individual there are multiple parts to the Inner Reality. The work of the individual, of the soul, is to engage in conscious integration, compassion, and internal dialogue, in order to bring these parts into harmonious interaction and balance. Its a journey that most people never ...

Stern argues rightly that our perceptions of vitality forms are gestalts. They are holistic judgments that summarize a wealth of complex information that are more than the sum of their parts. But he provides five elements that contribute to a vitality form-movement, force, time, space, and intention or direction. Movement unfolds over time, takes place in space, is experienced as the result of a force with a certain level of intensity, and has a direction or an intention. Since these are components of vitality forms they should help us see how vitality forms are individuated.. While brooding and languorous might share deliberate motion without sharp acceleration, over an extended period of time, they differ in intensity (force) and the amount of psychic space they occupy. Brooding is a more intense and all consuming feeling state than is languor. Furthermore, brooding differs from languor in its intentional focus. Someone who broods is inward looking and the self is experienced as having ...

The holiday started with a visit to Christina Lake and Doug Bell in Falmouth. Weve been meaning to visit them again for ages but its not a place to just drop in, it requires a bit of planning and time to travel. Its always lovely to see them, such good fannish fans, and we seemed to spend the whole weekend gossiping and planning (and eating ice-cream, and drinking cocktails & nice wine and eating) and occasionally talking about books. They have a lovely house with a view of the harbour if you are high enough up. From the attic where we slept you can see a gorgeous panorama but its a ladder and a flight of stairs down to the bathroom, which certainly precludes drinking too much or the temptation to make it the main bedroom. I enjoy spending time with Chris and Doug enormously and then never stay in touch in the interim. I guess its because it is the gestalt that is so marvellous. Perhaps we ought to set up conference calls with all four of us from our three different locations calling in ...

One of the most common infections acquired in the acute care setting is a catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) resulting from medical treatment that requires an indwelling urinary catheter (IUC). The number of IUC device days is the most important determinant of bacteria collection on the device. The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental practice improvement project was to determine to what degree a relationship exists between a nurse-directed protocol for IUC removal and device days at the project site, a rural hospital in southeastern North Carolina. Theoretical foundations used for this project were Lewins change theory and Tanners model of clinical judgment. The project used a quantitative methodology and a quasi-experimental design to analyze data from the electronic health record (EHR). A convenience sample (N = 110) was chosen for this project from patients admitted to the medical-surgical floors with an IUC for 4-weeks before and 4-weeks after the ...

Brain-imaging research has predominantly generated insight by means of classical statistics, including regression-type analyses and null-hypothesis testing using t-test and ANOVA. Throughout recent years, statistical learning methods enjoy increasing popularity especially for applications in rich and complex data, including cross-validated out-of-sample prediction using pattern classification and sparsity-inducing regression. This concept paper discusses the implications of inferential justifications and algorithmic methodologies in common data analysis scenarios in neuroimaging. It is retraced how classical statistics and statistical learning originated from different historical contexts, build on different theoretical foundations, make different assumptions, and evaluate different outcome metrics to permit differently nuanced conclusions. The present considerations should help reduce current confusion between model-driven classical hypothesis testing and data-driven learning algorithms for
