Junior Research Groups were set up for the first time at the Robert Koch Institute in 1999. They are oriented towards the research tasks of the Institute. For the Robert Koch Institute they represent a possibility to react flexibly to current topics. With the Junior Research Groups additional prerequisites have been created for the employment of PhD students at the Robert Koch Institute. They also offer young scientists an opportunity to set up their own working groups.. The Junior Research Groups are to cooperate in their scientific work with the Departments and Project Groups at the Robert Koch Institute. The topics of the Groups established so far have been selected accordingly. The research activities are subject to internal control by the Research Council of the Robert Koch Institute and the topics are defined in coordination with the Scientific Advisory Board of the Robert Koch Institute.. At present there are two Junior Research Groups. They are headed by a scientist in charge and elect a ...

Background Since July 2004, routine varicella vaccination is recommended by the German Standing Vaccination Committee in Germany. Health Insurance Funds started to cover vaccination costs at different time points between 2004 and 2006 in the Federal States. Nationwide representative data on vaccination coverage against varicella of children under two years of age are not available. We aimed to determine varicella vaccination coverage in statutory health insured children under two years of age in twelve German Federal States using data from associations of statutory health insurance physicians (ASHIPs), in order to investigate the acceptance of the recommended routine varicella vaccination programme. Methods We analysed data on varicella vaccination from 13 of 17 ASHIPs of the years 2004 to 2007. The study population consisted of all statutory health insured children under two years of age born in 2004 (cohort 2004) or 2005 (cohort 2005) in one of the studied regions. Vaccination coverage was determined

The mosquito Aedes japonicus japonicus, originally restricted to temperate East Asia, is now widespread in North America and more recently has become established in Europe. To ascertain the putative number of separate introductions to Europe and examine patterns of expansion we analyzed the genetic makeup of Ae. j. japonicus populations from five cemeteries in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, two western German federal states, as well as of specimens from populations in Belgium, Switzerland, and Austria/Slovenia. To do so, we genotyped individual specimens at seven pre-existing polymorphic microsatellite loci and sequenced part of the nad4 mitochondrial locus. We found evidence of two different genotypic signatures associated with different nad4 mitochondrial haplotypes, indicating at least two genetically differentiated populations of Ae. j. japonicus in Europe (i.e. two distinct genotypes). Belgian, Swiss, and Austrian/Slovenian populations all share the same genotypic ...
In 475 Borrelia-infected Ixodes ricinus (2155 ticks investigated) from southern Germany the most common Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato species was B. garinii (34.3%) followed by B. afzelii (25.1%), B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (22.0%), and B. valaisiana (12.7%). B. spielmanii sp. nov. was detected in 5.9% of the 475 infected ticks. Hints for a focal distribution were found for B. spielmanii sp. nov. and B. garinii OspA type 4. In 242 patient isolates, dominance (66.9%) of B. afzelii for skin could be confirmed, while frequency of B. garinii in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) isolates (51.1%) was comparable to the frequency in nymphal ticks (51.6%). Four patient isolates from southern Germany and two from Slovenia, all isolated from erythema migrans, could be assigned to B. spielmanii sp. nov. Within this new species high sequence identities were found for rrs, fla, and ospA while rrf-rrl, ospC, and dbpA were less conserved: three new ospC and two new dbpA sequence types were found. This genetic ...

By prophylactic vaccination of adults and especially children against measles, the pharmaceutical industry has earned Billions over a 40-year period. The judges at the German Federal Supreme Court (BGH) confirmed in a recent ruling that measles virus do not exist though. Furthermore: There is not a single scientific study in the world which could prove the existence of such virus so far. This raises the question of what was actually injected into millions of German citizens over the past decades. According to the judgement by the Supreme Court, it may not have been a vaccine against measles.. The Federal Supreme Court (BGH) has ruled in the measles virus trial. The First Civil Senate of the BGH has confirmed the judgement by the Higher Regional Court of Stuttgart (OLG) of the 16 February 2016. The sum of €100,000 which Stefan Lanka, PhD microbiologist had offered as a reward for scientific proof of the existence of the alleged measles virus does not have to be paid to the plaintiff. Older adults are more prone to develop adverse drug reactions (ADRs) since they exhibit numerous risk factors. The first aim was to analyse the number of spontaneous ADR reports regarding older adults (| 65) in the ADR database of the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) and to set them in relation to i) the number of ADR reports concerning younger adults (19-65), and ii) the number of inhabitants and assumed drug-exposed inhabitants. The second aim was to analyse, if reported characteristics occurred more often in older vs. younger adults. All spontaneous ADR reports involving older or younger adults within the period 01/01/2000-10/31/2017 were identified in the ADR database. Ratios concerning the number of ADR reports/number of inhabitants and ADR reports/drug-exposed inhabitants were calculated. The reports for older (n = 69,914) and younger adults (n = 111,463) were compared using descriptive and inferential statistics. The absolute number of ADR reports involving older

The Roman Catholic faith was accepted in parts of Germany from the fifth century after Christ onward. In the 1200s, German Crusaders, called the Teutonic Knights, conquered pagan Prussia (Preußen) and converted it to Catholicism. Catholicism remained the predominant faith of Germany until the 1500s, when the Reformation movements of Martin Luther and the Swiss religious reformers began to take hold. There was much conflict between Catholics and Protestants. In the 1550s, the Catholic Church began a counter reformation movement. The Thirty Years War, which swept across central Europe from 1618 to 1648, had its origins in religious conflicts between rulers of parts of Germany and Austria. After the war, the Catholic, Lutheran, and Reformed churches were the only recognized state churches. Smaller religious groups, such as Jews, Mennonites, and Huguenots, were still persecuted by the Protestant and Catholic churches. Roman Catholics have remained predominant in southern Germany than in northern ...

Today more than two million people with Turkish migration background live in Germany making them the largest ethnic minority in the country. Data concerning language skills and the perception of medical information in hospitalised patients with Turkish migration background (T) are scarce. Our study is the first to gather quantitative information on this important subject. T and hospitalised German patients without migration background (G) of our university hospital were prospectively included into a cross-sectional study and completed a questionnaire - each group in the appropriate language (T: Turkish, G: German). 121 T and 121 G were included. Groups significantly differed in age (T: 44.9 ± 17.8, G: 56.9 ± 16.7y) and proportion of males (T: 37.2, G: 54.5%) but not regarding the proportion of college graduates (T: 19.3, G: 15.7%). The majority of T was born in Turkey (71%) and is of Turkish nationality (66%). 74% of T speak mainly Turkish at home; however, 73% speak German at work. 74.4% of T self
The Überlingen mid-air collision occurred at 21:35 UTC on 1 July 2002 between Bashkirian Airlines Flight 2937 (a Tupolev Tu-154M passenger jet carrying 60 passengers - mostly children - and 9 crew) and DHL Flight 611 (a Boeing 757-23APF cargo jet manned by two pilots) over the towns of Überlingen and Owingen in southern Germany. All 71 people on board the two aircraft were killed.. Nearly two years later, on 24 February 2004, Peter Nielsen, the air traffic controller on duty at the time of the accident, was stabbed to death by an architect, Vitaly Kaloyev, who had lost his wife and two children in the accident.. On 19 May 2004, the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Investigation (BFU) published its determination that the accident had been caused by shortcomings in the Swiss air traffic control system supervising the flights at the time of the accident and by ambiguities in the use of TCAS, the on-board aircraft collision avoidance system. ...

In the case of Germany, the former head of West German military intelligence, Gerd-Helmut Komossa has in recent years published a book entitled The German Card: The Hidden Game of the Secret Services (Die deutsche Karte. Das verdeckte Spiel der geheimen Dienste) which reveals that in 1949 the USSA forced the government of West Germany to sign a secret agreement with the USSA that ceded German national sovereignty to the USSA until the year 2099, thus rendering Germany a vassal state to the USSA for 150 years. His book caused a big controversy in Germany, but the premise is obvious. Almost 70 years after WW-II, and approximately 20 years after the fall of the Berlin wall, after the reunification of West and East Germany, and many years after the collapse of the USSR, the USSA still stations large numbers of military forces on German soil. There are still dozens of American military bases and facilities in Germany. The conclusion is self-evident. Germany is not presently a sovereign nation, almost ...

By HELGE NEUMANN, RALF LOGES und FRIEDHELM TAUBE, Kiel. Due to the continuously increasing number of biogas plants in Germany, the area cultivated with silage maize Zea mays has been increasing significantly over the past few years. From the viewpoint of nature conservation it is generally supposed that this change in land use could result in losses of habitats of wild plant and animal species. In this paper we present the results of a study conducted in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein in Northern Germany over the period 2005 to 2007. Paired comparisons of single arable fields were used to analyse whether silage maize fields were characterized by other bird communities than fields cultivated with common cash crops (winter cereals, winter oilseed rape). Birds were recorded during the breeding time as well as during the non-breeding time.. Maize fields and cash crop fields showed similar numbers of breeding bird species. Lapwings Vanellus vanellus occurred more often in maize fields, ...

The original Leipzig School was a group of artists whose practice can be seen as a product of the bygone German Democratic Republic. From behind the Iron Curtain, they were isolated from western trends such as minimalism, abstract expressionism and conceptual art; and since their training and production was at least tacitly controlled by the state, their individual styles and subject matter were closely related to one another. After the fall of the Berlin wall, however, the state loosened its grip on the centuries-old Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts) and contemporary ideas began to filter in. Although the Academy continued to teach traditional methods, artists were now free to pursue their own themes and styles, and their work has come to be known as the New Leipzig School.. All five artists comprising the exhibition are recent graduates of the Academy, two in photography and three in painting, where they were under the tutelage of New School ...
Actually, colognes are very traditional perfumes in a very low concentration. Lets put it that way. They were invented about 200 years ago in Cologne, Germany, as a reaction to the very heady, animalic scents that people used to wear. Before that, perfumes were loaded with natural musks and castoreum, so when colognes were invented it was like a breakthrough. It was the first time that people were wearing light, refreshing fragrances that were not supposed to last for days, but were just there to be enjoyed in the moment. And, of course, back then colognes were all natural and they were basically composed using an overdose of citrus oil like lemon or bergamot. They were combined with some clary sage to give an interesting twist, and also with lavender to give an herbaceous contra punto. Americans might not know what colognes really are, but I think theres also a misconception of what a cologne is in Europe, too. It probably is because the generation of perfume lovers today were so influenced ...

Downloadable! Excessive alcohol consumption among youth and young adults is a major public health concern. On March 1, 2010 the German federal state of Baden-W rttemberg banned the sale of alcoholic beverages between 10pm and 5am in off-premise outlets (e.g. kiosks, petrol stations, supermarkets). We use rich monthly administrative data from a 70 percent random sample of all hospitalizations for the years 2007-2010 in Germany in order to evaluate the impact of this policy on alcohol-related hospitalizations. Applying a difference-in-difference approach, we find that the policy change reduces alcohol-related hospitalizations among adolescents and young adults by about 9 percent. The empirical results suggest that limiting late hours during which alcoholic beverages are allowed to be sold is an effective and rather costless public health initiative for reducing high-risk drinking among youth and young adults.
China, which bans hundreds of books every year, was a controversial choice as the guest of honor at this years Frankfurt Book Fair. But some of the Chinese authors appearing at the fair, which begins Wednesday, have managed to slip political works past the censors. A striking woman in an elegant black blouse sits in a bulky chair in the lobby of the Beijing Kempinski Hotel. Her name is Tie Ning and she is the chairwoman of the Chinese Writers Association, which means that she represents a total of 8,920 state-supported authors. Censorship? she says. What censorship? Artists enjoy great liberties in China. She adds: We are enthusiastically looking forward to the open exchange of opinions that will take place in Frankfurt. This could be a merry book party indeed. With an official delegation of exactly 100 authors, along with over 1,000 functionaries and publishing managers, the Chinese are appearing at the worlds largest book fair as this years guest of honor. Organizers in Frankfurt are ...
This article considers technical, cultural and gender-related aspects of textile production in southern Scandinavia and northern Germany during the Middle Bronze Age. Specifically, female networks and weaving technology are discussed through the different combinations of s- and y- spun thread. It is argued that textile technology is a cultural phenomenon that was spread through female interaction. These lines of communication and interaction shift over time, but at a rate that is demonstrably different from other changes in the society as seen on e.g. bronze objects that are more likely to be a result of male interactions and exchange networks. The study as a whole demonstrates that the textile evidence is a rich and informative source for Middle Bronze Age society, providing a key to understanding female identity and cultural change. ...

West Germany is the colloquial name given to the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland) prior to German reunification in 1990. It was formed from the British, French and American zones of occupied Germany in 1949, and the provisional capital of the state was Bonn. West Berlin was not officially part of the Federal Republic until 1991; its status remained that of a city under allied military government. Heavy US American investments in the country lead it to the German economic miracle. ...
In this paper, we combine vital statistics and survey data to obtain parity specific birth rates for West Germany. Since vital statistics do not provide birth parity information, one is confined to using estimates. The robustness of these estimates is an issue, which is unfortunately only rarely addressed when fertility indicators for (West) Germany are reported. In order to check how reliable our results are, we estimate confidence intervals and compare them to results from survey data and estimations conducted by the German Statistical Office. Although our estimations show a similar trend, the magnitude of some fertility indicators differ substantially from the ones reported in other studies. However, estimations from other studies do not give a consistent picture of German fertility, either.. ...

As Europes largest economy and second most populous nation (after Russia), Germany is a key member of the continents economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating world wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key western economic and security organizations, the EC (now the EU) and NATO, while the communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German reunification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring eastern productivity and wages up to western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU ...
Outbreaks and sporadic cases of Salmonella Enteritidis in Austria, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, as well as one case reported in Luxembourg, appear to be linked by the time of symptom onset and microbiological characteristics of isolates. The cases in Austria, France and Germany share an epidemiological link to the same egg packaging centre in southern Germany. Multi-country outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections associated with consumption of eggs from Germany
Germanys power generation sector accounted for 86.3% of the total coal consumption (234.6Mt) in 2014. Changing times combined with the governments energy transition policy resulted in a slight increase in the share of renewable sources over lignite for the first time in 2014. Renewable sources accounted for 25.7% in the power generation mix, while lignites share was slightly lower at 25.6%.. The shutting down of domestic mines such as Lippe, Lohberg and Walsum in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bergheim in Baden-Wurttemberg led to a 12.8% increase in the coal imports in 2014 to 57.1Mt. The key suppliers were Russia, the US and Colombia, which contributed 55.6% to the total coal imports in 2014.. The Timetric report mentions that lignite is the widely produced variety of coal used in the German power generation industry.. The key firms in the countrys coal mining industry are RWE Power AG, Vattenfall GmbH and RAG AG. The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (FMET) and the Federal Institute ...

The East Friesian is a breed of dairy sheep originating from East Frisia in northern Germany. It is either the best or one of the best sheep breeds in terms of milk yield per ewe. The breed originated from the Friesland area in northern Germany and Holland. In Europe the breeds main purpose is to produce milk. However, the breed is also used as a cross for other breeds to improve milk production in non-dairy breeds of sheep. In 1992 11 pregnant ewes and 4 rams were imported into New Zealand from Sweden. The sheep were placed in quarantine in Silverstream. A breeding program was created that used embryo transfer techniques. Only embryos from these original sheep were allowed to be released from the quarantine. It was not until march of 1996 that the first sheep were released from the quarantine and allowed to leave the farm. These sheep consisted of 40 rams while the rest of the sheep remained in quarantine to expand the flock numbers. Semen sales from the flock were very high with over 50,000 ...
Downloadable (with restrictions)! Further vocational training for the unemployed aims at enhancing their job prospects. This paper analyzes the effectiveness of subsidized training programs for means-tested unemployment benefit recipients in Germany. The empirical findings are based on rich administrative data from the German Federal Employment Agency using propensity score matching to construct a suitable comparison group. We consider the initiation of training in early 2005, just after the reform of the German means-tested benefit system, which aimed at activating hard-to-place job-seekers, and after the introduction of a voucher system as the sole assigning mechanism for vocational training. We estimated the effects of vocational training for several groups differentiated by age, gender, migration background, skills, program duration, length of time since last job and differences between East and West Germany. As a result, we show that vocational training has a considerable beneficial impact on

Posted on 09/14/2006 11:13:01 AM PDT by Republicain. A group of rabbis has been ordained in Germany for the first time since World War II and the destruction by the Nazis of the countrys Jewish seminaries. Three Jewish graduates from the Abraham Geiger College in Potsdam were ordained in the eastern city of Dresden. More than 100,000 Jews live in Germany but there is a dearth of rabbis - there are only about 25 of them serving 100 congregations, a BBC reporter says. For years Germany has had to rely on rabbis imported from abroad. The ordination took place in Dresdens new synagogue which was rebuilt after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Daniel Alter of Germany was the first of the three men to be confirmed as rabbi. He was soon joined by Tomas Kucera of the Czech Republic and South Africas Malcolm Matitiani. Mr Matitiani has been studying in Germany for the last five years. After his ordination he is planning to go back to his synagogue in Cape Town. He said he hoped the ordinations would help ...

The fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 offered the unique opportunity to compare populations of a similar genetic and geographic background which had been living under quite different environmental exposure conditions for over 40 years. Since 1990 comparative epidemiological studies were performed between various regions in former East and West Germany with yearly questionnaires and 3 years physical, dermatological, allergological and exposure examination in a total of about 30,000 preschool children. There were striking differences between the various German regions with higher prevalence rates of respiratory atopy (hay fever, asthma) and atopic sensitization (prick test, RAST) in West Germany, while atopic eczema was significantly higher in East Germany (17.5 vs. 11.4% in West Germany). Total serum IgE levels were markedly higher in children in the east of Germany, similarly to the prevalence of parasitic infestation (questionnaire data as well as positive ascaris RAST). In multivariate logistic ...
Can you just imagine a cologne that would majestically make you look good and smell good at the same time? Pheromone cologne manufacturers strongly believe that this is possible. Who would say no for a cologne product that can turn you into a beautiful swan in an instant? Nobody perhaps. Pheromone colognes principle is that humans can attract one another by means of pheromones. So what exactly are pheromone colognes? Technically and scientifically, pheromones are body chemicals found in animals that affect other animals behavior. This of course doesnt purely mean sexual affairs as what most people believe. Pheromones can be a medium to mark certain territories like most animals do and it can also lead the way to a potential food. However, in most facts, animals and insects respond to their mates by means of pheromones. Pheromones are secreted by a person to send a signal to the other person. The sexual pheromones makes a female attracted to a male with a strong pheromone. Studies show that ...

Historically, the various confessions in Germany have contributed to primary and secondary education and do so still. Education in Germany still embodies the legacy of the Prussian education system introduced by Frederick the Great in 1763. The curricula of the various states of Germany since then have included not only basic technical skills but also music (singing) and religious (Christian) education in close cooperation with the churches. This has led to the churches being assigned a specific status as legal entity of public law, Körperschaft des öffentlichen Rechts in Germany, which is a legacy of a 1919 Weimar compromise still in force today.[17] Most of the federal states of Germany, which has a long history of almost even division between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism, have an arrangement whereby the religious bodies oversee the training of mainline Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish religious education teachers. In one of the federal states this includes Orthodox Christian ...
To improve and assess the effectiveness of disease management programs (DMPs), it is critical to understand how many people drop out of disease management programs and why. We used routine data provided by a statutory health insurance fund from the regions North Rhine, North Wurttemberg and Hesse. As part of the German DMP for type 2 diabetes, the insurance fund received regular documentation of all members participating in the program. We followed 10,989 patients who enrolled in the DMP between July 2004 and December 2005 until the end of 2007 to study how many patients dropped out of the program. Dropout was defined based on the discontinuation of program documentation on a particular patient, excluding situations in which the patient died or left the insurance fund. Predictors of dropout, assessed at the time of program enrolment, were explored using logistic regression analysis. 5.5% of the patients dropped out of the disease management program within the observation period. Predictors of dropout at
The Iron Curtain divided Germany after the war with differential development of neurosurgery in the two sectors. West Germany (FRG) benefited politically from the establishment of a democratic system of government and economically from the Marshall Plan. East Germany (GDR), which became a satellite of the Soviet Union, was economically stressed by large war reparations as well as politically and intellectually limited by the new totalitarian regimes. Professors of surgery resisted the introduction of neurosurgery as a subspecialty. However, in 1948 the first neurosurgical unit opened in Leipzig, headed by Georg Merrem (1908-1971), a pupil of Emil Heymann. He was the only one to continue the tradition of the Krause-Heymann school, and his unit became the main center for neurosurgery in the GDR. In 1959, Merrem was appointed professor of neurosurgery in the GDR, the only such appointment to be made in that country. Leipzig and the municipal unit in Berlin-Buch (Friedrich Weickmann) remained the ...

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has released a new scientific opinion on the parasite Echinococcus multilocularis, a type of tapeworm that can cause a potentially fatal disease in humans.. The parasite causes the disease echinococcosis in carnivores such as foxes and dogs and can be transmitted to humans through contaminated water or food. It is endemic in Eastern France, Southern Germany and parts of Switzerland and Austria and has also been recorded in other countries.. The EFSA scientific opinion concludes that the red fox is the principal host of E. multilocularis in Europe and should be monitored for infection. It also recommends defining epidemiological areas independently of political boundaries, standardising diagnostic tests and focusing on this most dangerous species of Echinococcus rather than the genus in general.. The opinion can be found in full on the EFSA website here.. ...

Titanium alloys are still a young material. However, the first alloys developed at the end of the 1940s were already making aviation and aerospace history: They made it possible to enter the jet engine age and thus step into a new era. In the meantime, titanium alloys are increasingly establishing themselves in the chemical industry, the construction industry, medical technology, as well as in the offshore, energy and automotive sectors due to their high specific strength, excellent corrosion resistance, outstanding biocompatibility and other properties. At the same time, global titanium production is increasing every year.. As the energy-intensive extraction of raw materials makes titanium relatively expensive compared with other metals, research has long been trying to reduce costs by developing new manufacturing processes or ways of recycling materials. Other key areas of work include the development of new alloys with special properties, improved oxidation resistance and easier machining. If ...
