One of the largest emergency vaccination campaigns ever attempted in Africa will start in Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo this week as WHO and partners work to curb a yellow fever outbreak that has killed more than 400 people and sickened thousands more.. Working with Ministries of Health in the 2 countries, WHO is coordinating 56 global partners to vaccinate more than 14 million people against yellow fever in more than 8000 locations. The yellow fever outbreak has found its way to dense, urban areas and hard-to-reach border regions, making planning for the vaccination campaign especially complex.. Emergency yellow fever vaccination campaigns have already reached more than 13 million people in Angola and more than 3 million in Democratic Republic of the Congo. These campaigns have been crucial to stopping the spread of the outbreak. Some areas are still considered at high risk and so preventive vaccination campaigns are planned for the capital city of Kinshasa in Democratic Republic ...

Plum pox virus (PPV) is the most important virus infecting stone-fruit trees (Prunus spp.). Almond (Prunus dulcis L.) is identified as a host plant, but the symptomatology is uncertain, and it is unclear whether almond can be infected naturally or only via PPV-infected rootstock. To evaluate the current situation in the Czech Republic and determine the importance of almond in PPV spread, a survey was conducted in 2015-2016. In six locations, almond orchards and landscape trees, samples were collected from both symptomatic and non-symptomatic almond trees, as well as from symptomatic plums and apricots as positive controls. Screening was carried out for the presence of PPV and other viruses known to infect almonds, using an imunochromatographic test, RT-PCR and PDO-ntRT-PCR analyses. PPV was not detected in any of the analysed almond trees. Symptom occurrence was not a reliable indicator of PPV infections in almonds. Although some almond trees showed intensive symptoms (vein clearing, yellow ...

There is no cure for cerebral palsy, no matter what kind you have, nor is there a single known cause. However, in about 20% of all cases, the cerebral palsy can be attributed to a specific factor in a newborn's life, like infection malnutrition, or head trauma. If you or your child has developed cerebral palsy due to the direct actions of another person, you may be able to file lawsuit to have your medical bills paid and your pain and suffering compensated. This is not always the case, but a Georgia cerebral palsy lawyer can help you determine what steps you should take to get the best help possible with your medical care. A Georgia cerebral palsy lawyer can also help you file suit if you are treated unfairly due to your handicap. Finding a Georgia cerebral palsy lawyer with which to work isn't hard, either, although many patients simply do not know where to start. First, look for recommendations. If you know other people suffering from cerebral palsy, whether through support groups, ...

To quantify extent of catastrophic household health expenditures, determine factors influencing it and estimate Fairness in Financial Contribution (FFC) index in Georgia to establish the baseline for expected reforms and contribute to the design and fine-tuning of the major reforms in health care financing initiated by the government mid-2007. The research is based on the nationally representative Health Care Utilization and Expenditure survey conducted during May-June 2007, prior to preparing for new phase of implementation for the health care financing reforms. Households' catastrophic health expenditures were estimated according to the methodology proposed by WHO - Ke Xu [1]. A logistic regression (logit) model was used to predict probability of catastrophic health expenditure occurrence. In Georgia between 2000 and 2007 access to care for poor has improved slightly and the share of households facing catastrophic health expenditures have seemingly increased from 2.8% in 1999 to 11.7% in 2007. However
We carried out a study to compare the performance, in terms of sensitivity and specificity, of the new SD BIOLINE® HAT rapid diagnostic test (RDT) with the card agglutination test for trypanosomiasis (CATT) for diagnosis of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Participants were enrolled actively by four mobile teams, and passively at four health facilities in three provinces. Consenting participants were tested concurrently with the RDT and CATT on whole blood. Those found positive by either test were tested with CATT on serial dilutions of plasma, and with a parasitological composite reference standard (CRS). Cases were only the individuals found positive by the CRS, while controls were negative by both CATT and RDT, as well as those that were positive by CATT or RDT, but were negative by the CRS, and had no history of HAT. Over five months, 131 cases and 13,527 controls were enrolled. The sensitivity of the RDT was 92.0% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 86

Concentrations of perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) were measured in surface waters and sediments from the Coosa River watershed in northwest Georgia, USA, to examine their distribution downstream of a suspected source. Samples from eight sites were analyzed using liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry. Sediments were also used in 28‐d exposures with the aquatic oligochaete, Lumbriculus variegatus, to assess PFC bioaccumulation. Concentrations of PFCs in surface waters and sediments increased significantly below a land‐application site (LAS) of municipal/industrial wastewater and were further elevated by unknown sources downstream. Perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) with eight or fewer carbons were the most prominent in surface waters. Those with 10 or more carbons predominated sediment and tissue samples. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was the major homolog in contaminated sediments and tissues. This pattern among sediment PFC concentrations was consistent among sites and reflected
Three freshwater lakes, Lisi Lake, Kumisi Lake and Tbilisi Sea, near Tbilisi, Georgia, were studied from January 2006 to December 2007 to determine the presence of Vibrio cholerae employing both bacteriological culture method and direct detection methods, namely PCR and direct fluorescent antibody (DFA). For PCR, DNA extracted from water samples was tested for presence of V. cholerae and genes coding for selected virulence factors. Vibrio cholerae non-O1/non-O139 was routinely isolated by culture from all three lakes; whereas V. cholerae O1 and O139 were not. Water samples collected during the summer months from Lisi Lake and Kumisi Lake were positive for both V. cholerae and V. cholerae ctxA, tcpA, zot, ompU and toxR by PCR. Water samples collected during the same period from both Lisi and Kumisi Lake were also positive for V. cholerae serogroup O1 by DFA. All of the samples were negative for V. cholerae serotype O139. The results of this study provide evidence for an environmental presence of ...

The disease was once endemic to the western African countries of Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast and Mali but has since disappeared.[10]. Throughout Loa loa-endemic regions, infection rates vary from 9 to 70 percent of the population.[3] Areas at high risk of severe adverse reactions to mass treatment (with Ivermectin) are at present determined by the prevalence in a population of ,20% microfilaremia, which has been recently shown in eastern Cameroon (2007 study), for example, among other locales in the region.[10]. Endemicity is closely linked to the habitats of the two known human loiasis ...
The extent of catastrophic health expenditure and impoverishment associated with depression in low-and middle-income countries is not known. The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence and intensity of catastrophic out-of-pocket (OOP) health expenditure, level of impoverishment and coping strategies used by households of persons with and without depression in a rural Ethiopian district. A comparative cross-sectional survey was conducted, including 128 households of persons with depression and 129 households without. Depression screening was conducted using the Patient Health Questionnaire, nine item version (PHQ-9). People in the depression group were classified into high and low disability groups based on the median value on the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS) polytomous summary score. Health expenditure greater than thresholds of 10 and 25% of total household consumption was used for the primary analyses. The poverty headcount, poverty gap and normalized
Universal health coverage through the removal of financial and other barriers to access, particularly for people who are poor, is a global priority. This viewpoint describes the many pathways to catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) for patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) based on two case studies and the thematic analysis of field notes regarding 210 patients and their households from a study based in Kerala, India. There is evidence of the severe financial impact of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which is in contradiction to the widely acclaimed Kerala model: Good health at low cost. However, it is important to look beyond the out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) and CHE to the possible pathways and identify the triggers that make families vulnerable to CHE. The identified pathways include a primary and secondary loop. The primary pathway describes the direct path by which families experience CHE. These include: 1) factors related to the pre-event period that increase the likelihood of
After receiving Botulinum Toxin injections, there will be some muscle tenderness. But that will disappear almost immediately after your treatment. There may also be mild temporary bruising, numbness or redness around the injection sites. Since Botulinum Toxin treatment is nonsurgical and noninvasive, you will be able to return to normal activities immediately. However, it is important that you do not rub or massage the area that has been injected with Botulinum Toxin. Avoiding this will help to prevent the spreading of the toxin to other muscle groups. You should also remain upright for several hours after the procedure, while also limiting physical activities immediately following. If you suffer from TMD or headaches, now is the time to stand up as seek further treatment for relief. HealthDay Reporter. (HealthDay News) -- A look at recent measles outbreaks in the United States finds more than half of the cases involved unvaccinated children.. Vaccine refusal was also often the culprit in whooping cough (pertussis) outbreaks as well, according to the new study.. 'When vaccine refusal rates are high, the rates of measles and pertussis are higher,' said researcher Dr. Varun Phadke, a fellow in infectious diseases at Emory University in Atlanta.. In 2000, the United States was declared measles-free. But infected travelers returning to the country have caused outbreaks, and unvaccinated children are most at risk, research has shown.. This study found that among more than 1,400 cases since 2000, more than half of patients had no history of vaccination. Most had nonmedical exemptions -- based on religious or philosophical beliefs -- not medical exemptions, researchers said.. The report was published March 15 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.. Measles and whooping ...
To the Editor: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV; family Bunyaviridae, genus Nairovirus) causes outbreaks of severe hemorrhagic fever in humans, with case-fatality rates ,30% (1,2). The disease was initially recognized by Russian scientists in the 1940s (3), and the virus was first isolated in the Democratic Republic of Congo some years later (4). CCHFV is reported throughout broad regions of Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Reports linking transmission of the virus with an infected vector have involved ticks of the genus Hyalomma (5). It appears that maintenance of active foci of CCHFV in the field is dependent on Hyalomma spp., even within periods of silent activity. Several vertebrates are involved in the natural transmission cycle (6). Transmission of CCHFV to humans occurs through tick bites, direct contact with blood or tissues of infected animals, person-to-person spread, or by nosocomial infection (1).. In southeastern Europe, the Balkans are the known western limit ...
Background Eight outbreaks of paralytic polio attributable to circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) have highlighted the risks associated with oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) use in areas of low vaccination coverage and poor hygiene. As the Polio Eradication Initiative enters its final stages, it is important to consider the extent to which these viruses spread under different conditions, so that appropriate strategies can be devised to prevent or respond to future cVDPV outbreaks. Methods and Findings This paper examines epidemiological (temporal, geographic, age, vaccine history, social group, ascertainment), and virological (type, genetic diversity, virulence) parameters in order to infer the numbers of individuals likely to have been infected in each of these cVDPV outbreaks, and in association with single acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases attributable to VDPVs. Although only 114 virologically-confirmed paralytic cases were identified in the eight cVDPV outbreaks, it is likely that a
