Source: U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The U.S. Attorneys Office for the Northern District of Georgia has reached a settlement agreement with Grady Memorial Hospital (Grady), the largest hospital in the State of Georgia and located in Atlanta, Georgia, to resolve an investigation into allegations that it violated Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by failing to ensure effective communication with individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing. When a deaf patient or caregiver is unable to understand what is happening during a medical visit or procedure, it can be a terrifying experience and adversely affect the quality of care, said U.S. Attorney John Horn. I am encouraged that Grady has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to ensure that people who are deaf or hard of hearing have equal access to quality medical care. The U.S. Attorneys Office initiated an investigation after receiving a complaint alleging that Grady failed to provide appropriate auxiliary aids and services ...

North Carolina-based Novant Health made waves in Georgia health care recently when it struck a partnership deal with Memorial Health in Savannah.. But Novant already had a substantial footprint in Georgia health care. It operates 20 medical imaging centers in Georgia, mostly in metro Atlanta, through its MedQuest subsidiary.. Novant is not the only nonprofit, out-of-state health system to make a recent incursion into Georgia. Earlier this year, Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic established a presence in South Georgia, absorbing a hospital in Waycross.. Vaccine-preventable diseases are a major problem in adults (1). In particular, influenza and pneumococcal disease account for approximately 60,000 deaths each year among persons greater than or equal to 65 years of age. Many of these deaths could be prevented through appropriate vaccination, but most adults are not immunized (1). In July 1988, the DeKalb County Board of Health, Fulton County Health Department, Georgia Department of Human Resources, and CDC surveyed persons greater than or equal to 65 years of age who lived in DeKalb and Fulton counties, Georgia. This survey assessed knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding influenza and pneumococcal immunizations. Interviews were conducted by telephone or in person using the same questionnaire. In DeKalb and Fulton counties, respectively, 13 and 50 housing communities for older adults who lived independently were identified. Seven communities (five in DeKalb County and two in Fulton County) participated in the in-person interviews. For all ...

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The Fulton County Fire Rescue Department urges every resident to learn the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 150 people in the Unites States die every year from accidental non-fire-related CO poisoning associated with consumer products, including generators and other products including faulty, improperly-used or incorrectly-vented fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, stoves, water heaters and fireplaces.. "Because CO is odorless, colorless, and otherwise undetectable to the human senses, people may not know that they are being exposed," states Chief Larry Few, Fulton County Fire Rescue Department. "Although the popularity of carbon monoxide alarms has been growing in recent years, it cannot be assumed that everyone is familiar with the hazards of carbon monoxide poisoning in the home.". According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), carbon monoxide is often called the invisible killer ...

APN) ATLANTA - On Tuesday, December 20, 2016, the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) rubber-stamped a controversial stipulation agreement that fails to protect Georgia utility customers and rewards Georgia Powers bad management.. The Commissioners unanimous vote, although disappointing, was not surprising, because the current five Republican Commissioners so often serve the wishes of Georgia Power. Some ratepayers advocates have suggested they be called "The Georgia Power Service Commission.". Georgia Power customers are now stuck with paying billions more than the company originally estimated for the ever-increasing construction costs for two new nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle.. The settlement certifies as "prudent" capital costs up to 5.68 billion dollars, on top of 3.68 billion dollars already spent.. Thats an advance approval of approximately two billion more dollars for ratepayers to suck up on this bottomless money pit, while Georgia Power shareholder profits will only be reduced ...

Immunologists from Emory University have identified a distinct set of long-lived antibody-producing cells in the human bone marrow that function as an immune archive.. The cells keep a catalog of how an adults immune system responded to infections decades ago in childhood encounters with measles or mumps viruses. The results, published Tuesday, July 14 in , could provide vaccine designers with a goalpost when aiming for long-lasting antibody production.. "If youre developing a vaccine, you want to fill up this compartment with cells that respond to your target antigen," says co-senior author F. Eun-Hyung Lee, MD, assistant professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and director of Emory Healthcares Asthma, Allergy and Immunology program.. The findings could advance investigation of autoimmune diseases such as lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis, by better defining the cells that produce auto-reactive antibodies.. Co-senior author of the Immunity paper is Iñaki Sanz, ...

Several weeks ago, Elder Law Issues told the story of Sidney Head, a Georgia resident moved to Arizona by his son, using a health care power of attorney, despite his wife having been appointed his guardian in Georgia (see Elder Law Issues Vol. 4, No. 32). In that report, we explained that the Arizona courts had declined to get involved in the dispute, referring the matter to Georgia courts even though Col. Head continues to reside in a Tucson-area nursing home.. In that Georgia court proceeding, Col. Heads wife (and guardian) objected to the relocation of Col. Head by his son (and health care agent). His son argued that his actions were not prohibited by Georgia law, and that he had acted in his fathers best interests. Col. Heads son pointed to the allegedly inadequate care he received in a Georgia nursing home, and to his wifes failure to respond to complaints from Col. Heads children.. The Georgia court has now agreed with the son, and ordered that Col. Head may remain in the Tucson ...

Georgia Survey Modification #1: Because of the current lack of capture data for bats in Georgia, the acoustic only option will not be accepted in Georgia, unless prior approval is received by the USFWS Georgia Ecological Services Office. This option may be accepted in the future but currently acoustic surveys should be done in concert with mist-netting surveys. If a site cannot be effectively netted for bats, acoustic units can help to provide information on the presence/absence of threatened or endangered bat species-in some specific situations (e.g., an open site, wind farm location, lack of suitable netting corridor, etc.), an acoustic unit may substitute for mist netting, upon prior approval of the USFWS Georgia Ecological Services Office. A bat survey plan should be submitted prior to the commencement of surveys. Snake handlers in Alabama and Georgia also trace their heritage to James Miller, a preacher who independently began the practice in 1912 in Sand Mountain, Alabama. Under his influence the movement spread into Berrien and Cook counties in south central Georgia by 1920. Beginning in the 1940s, several southern states, including Georgia, passed laws prohibiting snake handling in religious services. The law in Georgia developed after a six-year-old girl was bitten during a service near Adel, in Cook County. Police arrested both her father and her pastor, Warren Lipham, who later stood trial but was not convicted for the earlier death of a worshipper in 1938. In 1941 Georgia passed a law that made snake handling a felony punishable by twenty years in prison in the case of injury to another, or by the death penalty in the case of a fatality. The law was repealed in the 1960s. Today, the handling of poisonous snakes in Georgia is legal only by permit ...

Mining and mineral industries were important sectors of the north Georgia economy during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Many of these industries had tremendous impacts on individual communities and regions of the state, as well as leaving extensive traces on the landscape. Despite the significance of mineral extraction and processing, these industries are poorly known and understood, while their archaeological traces are difficult to identify and assess. To aid the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and other agencies and consultants in evaluating historic and archaeological resources associated with these industries, New South Associates prepared Mining and Mineral Industries of North Georgia: A Historic Context.. This study focused on the northern part of Georgia, a rich and diverse geological region that supported numerous mineral industries. Some of these are relatively well known within the state, such as the gold rush that predated the California strikes by 20 years; the ...
In April, as a new form of flu was emerging, Emory researchers were already at the forefront of studying the virus H1N1-tracking its spread across the globe, planning for its impact in the United States, and working to identify a vaccine.. But while Emory hospitals were prepared to treat patients impacted by the H1N1 virus, no one was expecting how sick the patient would be who arrived by helicopter in May. The 31-year-old mother of two young children was the first confirmed case of the H1N1 virus in Georgia. A resident of Kentucky, she already had spent more than 10 days in a hospital in Middle Georgia. She was suffering from respiratory failure with a dangerous blood clot in her lungs. Unable to breathe on her own, she needed the advanced care available only at a tertiary care center like Emory.. Atypical of other flu viruses, the one contracted by this woman was still present. "As a result, her lungs were stiffening - unable to expand and contract," says her Emory doctor, David ...

Misfolding of proteins can reduce functionality as well as result in the formation of amorphous aggregates or ordered aggregates like amyloids. Amorphous aggregate formation during production, transport, and storage of protein-based biologics is a cause of concern in the biopharmaceutical industry as it results in a reduction in the efficacy or ...

Georgia is a country with high emigration intensity. Main reason for emigration is search for employment abroad. Namely, 75 - 80% of emigrants are migrant workers. In spite of this, Georgias labour migration policy is still only at a formation stage and the activities of private employment agencies in the field are neither efficient nor ethical. As a result, labour migration from Georgia is mainly of unorganized and irregular nature, accompanied by related risks and socio-economic losses. Though the Government of Georgia shows more and more interest towards temporary labour migration through fostering inter-country cooperation, relevant underdeveloped models significantly hinder its development.. It is an aim of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission to Georgia to form and pilot in practice the abovementioned model. Poland and Estonia were selected as pilot countries and the project "Piloting Temporary Labour Migration of Georgian Workers to Poland and Estonia" was developed ...

Researchers have successfully identified biological signatures in pediatric patients with newly diagnosed Crohns disease (CD) capable of predicting whether a child will develop disease-related complications requiring major surgery within three to five years. The results of this research, "Prediction of complicated disease course for children newly diagnosed with Crohns disease: a multicentre inception cohort study," have been published in the journal, The Lancet. This groundbreaking work is the result of the Crohns & Colitis Foundations "RISK Stratification" study, the largest new-onset study completed on pediatric Crohns disease patients. It is a multicenter research initiative that consists of 25 U.S. institutions and three from Canada and a cohort of 1,112 CD children enrolled at diagnosis, of which 913 were included in the published study. ATLANTA - Georgia is leading the country with above average early childhood vaccinations with 75.6 percent of children 19-35 months old protected, compared to national averages of 72.2 percent for the 7-vaccine series. However, health officials here say statewide immunization statistics show that more can be done to stop vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks in Georgia.. As recent disease outbreaks demonstrate, immunizing infants and young children remains a critical component of protecting vulnerable infants against potentially deadly diseases.. So far in 2017, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported more than 1,200 cases of mumps across the U.S. Other recent outbreaks include a pertussis outbreak in 2012 that infected more than 48,000 people, and a measles outbreak that started at Disneyland and impacted 188 people in 2015. Each of these diseases is preventable by vaccines.. During National Infant Immunization Week, April 22-29, the Georgia Department of Public Health and ...
December 2, 2008 - Insidermedicine) On a recent trip to Atlanta we caught up with Dr. Venkat Narayan (MD, MSc, MBA) who is the Hubert Professor of Global Health & Epidemiology at Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University. Until recently he led the Diabetes Epidemiology and Statistics Branch at the Centers for Disease Control, prior to which he was also a visiting scientist at the National Institutes of Health.. What is diabetes?. Diabetes, essentially is a metabolic condition which is characterized by high levels of glucose, so for example if you had your glucose measured when you were fasting and it was greater than 126mg/dl, you have diabetes. Another way of diagnosing diabetes is to have whats called a glucose tolerance test, in which you are given a volume of glucose to drink and a measurement is taken after 2 hours, and if the measurement is greater than 200mg/dl, that is also considered to be diabetes. ...

The Emory University RISE program was established with the goal of addressing a critical problem in the US educational system, i.e., the shortage of underrepresented minority students in science and engineering careers. Many factors contribute to this problem during high school, including a shortage of advanced science courses, lack of role models that can serve as motivating examples for a science career, and absence of opportunities to experience the excitement of scientific discovery. Once in college, success in science majors is influenced by rigorous introductory science classes. This problem affects all college students and is not specific to URM students, but it has a disproportionate effect on this group of students who tend to come from socioeconomic backgrounds that lack the opportunity to experience an enriched high school education. This may be a critical factor contributing to the shortage of URMs in STEM careers. The lack of a high school education rich in Advanced Placement ...

The special election in Georgia next month could be a referendum on President Trumps popularity. Jon Ossoff, a 30-year-old Democrat with a sizeable war chest, is contesting Atlantas suburban Sixth District, which until a few weeks ago was represented by Representative Tom Price, now secretary of health and human services.. "Any other election year in the Sixth wouldnt be worth peoples time-this one is," says Clarkston Mayor Ted Terry, vice chair of recruitment for the Georgia Democratic Party and one of the first to speak with Ossoff about joining the race.. The Sixth District is the epicenter of state Republican politics. It was once represented by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and current Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson. In 2012, Mitt Romney carried the Sixth by more than 20 points, as did John McCain in 2008. Yet, last November, Hillary Clinton lost the district by just under 2 points.. Ossoff, an investigative filmmaker and former aide to Georgia Representative Hank Johnson, is one ...
NORCROSS, Ga., June 20, 2017-Georgia Right to Life (GRTL) today called on state officials to strictly enforce a fetal pain law that bans abortions after 20 weeks of gestation.. The demand came following Mondays ruling by the Georgia Supreme Court that dismissed a challenge to the ban.. "This law has been in limbo for too long," said GRTL President Ricardo Davis. "Officials need to do their duty and notify every abortion provider in the state that the law is in effect and that failure to comply will result in prosecution.". The law has been tied up in legal proceedings since a Fulton County Superior Court judge issued an injunction in 2012 blocking its implementation before it was scheduled to go into effect.. "Hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent children have been killed because this law has not been enforced," Davis added. "Its time to put an end to this injustice.". Mondays decision was based on the finding that the state is immune from being sued without its consent.. The challenge was ...

The original Georgia Avenue was the road now named Potomac Avenue in Southwest and Southeast. Current-day Georgia Avenue was originally named 7th Street Extended and Brightwood Avenue.. Seventh Street Pike was built as a plank road from Boundary Avenue (now Florida Avenue) to the District Line in 1852.[2] Being a plank road, it was essentially paved with wooden planks that had to be replaced periodically due to rotting.[3] The road was also known as Brightwood Avenue.. A tollgate was located at current-day 6400 Georgia Avenue, at the corner of Georgia Avenue and Piney Branch Road NW.[4] Prominent residents living north of the tollgate decided to buy enough land to build a road to bypass the tollgate; this road became Piney Branch Road NW.[4]. The road was also the path of the Seventh Street Railway, which took riders from Brightwood to downtown. The railway consisted of cars drawn by horses, guided by metal tracks that protruded above the road.[5][6] On April 12, 1890, Seventh Street Railway ...

The extent of Georgias marshes is as great as it is only because it has been protected by a state law since 1970. Georgias Coastal Marshlands Protection Act (Marsh Act) predated the Clean Water Act and many other landmark pieces of state and federal environmental legislation.. Now, the Board of Natural Resources is considering rules that would weaken the Marsh Act, under which marshfront developments are permitted.. When the Marsh Act was passed in 1970, it was prompted by three things: the first was that common law clearly placed this valued asset under the care of the state. Georgias Attorney General has issued an opinion that the marsh is owned by the state, and Georgias appellate courts have affirmed that opinion. The second was that many industrial interests were pushing hard to destroy the marsh by mining and filling.. And the third was that approximately 15 years of intense research had shown that our salt marsh was highly productive economically. It was clear to the people working to ...

Georgia Cancer Plan 2014-2019. CANCER IS THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE of death in Georgia. In 2013, an estimated 16,630 Georgians died of cancer. The two leading cancer killers in Georgia are lung and colon cancer. And, each day, more than 120 more Georgians are diagnosed with cancer. That is an average of more than 41,000 new cancer cases each year. Lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer account for 51 percent of all cancer deaths in Georgia. While the burden of cancer is shared by all Georgians, cancer incidence and mortality is disproportionately greater among men and among minority and medically underserved populations.. The Georgia Department of Public Health and other members of the Georgia Cancer Control Consortium, including the Regional Cancer Coalitions of Georgia envision a future for our state that is free from cancer deaths and cancer related health disparities. However, the causes of cancer and its prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care are multi-dimensional. A persons ...
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between apolipoprotein E (APOE), life events and engagement, and subjective well-being (as measured by positive and negative affect) among centenarians. Based on the life stress paradigm, we predicted that higher levels of stress would allow APOE to influence positive and negative affect. Method: 196 centenarians and near-centenarians (98 years and older) of the Georgia Centenarian Study participated in this research. The APOE, positive and negative affect, the number of recent (last 2 years) and lifelong (more than 20 years prior to testing) events, as well as a number of life engagement tasks were assessed. Results: Results suggested that centenarians carrying the APOE ϵ4 allele rated lower in positive affect, the number of lifelong events, and in engaged lifestyle, when compared to centenarians without the APOE ϵ4 allele (t = 3.43, p , .01; t = 3.19, p , .01; and t = 2.33, p , .05, respectively). Blockwise multiple ...
