In the fall of 2002, the Onondaga Lake Partnership (OLP) formed a Geographic Information System (GIS) Planning Committee to begin the process of developing a comprehensive watershed geographic information system for Onondaga Lake. The goal of the Onondaga Lake Partnership geographic information system is to integrate the various types of spatial data used for scientific investigations, resource management, and planning and design of improvement projects in the Onondaga Lake Watershed. A needs-assessment survey was conducted and a spatial data framework developed to support the Onondaga Lake Partnership use of geographic information system technology. The design focused on the collection, management, and distribution of spatial data, maps, and internet mapping applications. A geographic information system library of over 100 spatial datasets and metadata links was assembled on the basis of the results of the needs assessment survey. Implementation options were presented, and the Geographic Information

A geographic information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographic data. The acronym GIS is sometimes used for geographic information science (GI Science) to refer to the academic discipline that studies geographic information systems and is a large domain within the broader academic discipline of geoinformatics.. What goes beyond a GIS is a spatial data infrastructure, a concept that has no such restrictive boundaries. In general, the term describes any information system that integrates, stores, edits, analyzes, shares, and displays geographic information. GIS applications are tools that allow users to create interactive queries (user-created searches), analyze spatial information edit data in maps, and present the results of all these operations.[3][4] Geographic information science is the science underlying geographic concepts, applications, and systems.. GIS can refer to a number of different technologies, processes, ...

The spatial variability of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (STN) levels is important in both global carbon-nitrogen cycle and climate change research. There has been little research on the spatial distribution of SOC and STN at the watershed scale based on geographic information systems (GIS) and geostatistics. Ninety-seven soil samples taken at depths of 0-20 cm were collected during October 2010 and 2011 from the Matiyu small watershed (4.2 km2) of a hilly area in Shandong Province, northern China. The impacts of different land use types, elevation, vegetation coverage and other factors on SOC and STN spatial distributions were examined using GIS and a geostatistical method, regression-kriging. The results show that the concentration variations of SOC and STN in the Matiyu small watershed were moderate variation based on the mean, median, minimum and maximum, and the coefficients of variation (CV). Residual values of SOC and STN had moderate spatial autocorrelations, and the Nugget/Sill
Systems and methods are provided for generating a reference location data set, such as a reference longitude and latitude point, for each of a plurality of point addresses. A reference location data set can be determined for a point address based on a history of prior geocode samples, such as GPS readings, that have been obtained using a portable computing device during a prior delivery to or pickup from the point address. A location data service collects such geocode samples and processes the samples to generate a reference location data set, such as a reference longitude and latitude and a zone of confidence around the reference longitude and latitude, for each unique point address. To determine whether an item is being delivered to a wrong address, current location data obtained during a delivery can be compared against the reference location data generated by the location data service for the delivery address.

Wait until they hear about Facebook, Google, and other data power brokers masquerading as tech companies.. These apps dot the home screens of nearly every phone in existence. Whether it came from Apple, or a third-party like TWC, chances are you have one too. But unlike Apples humble offering, third-party apps are chock-full of added features. Chief among them, a penchant for secretly mining your location data and selling it to advertising brokers.. Its not the Equifax hack, by any means. Were not talking about a mountain of data exposing everything from your current income, to an affinity for letting it ride in Atlantic City. But forking over location data to the people known for weaponizing it against you isnt worth writing off, either.. And TWC isnt the first weather app to travel this road. WeatherBug, another popular choice for mobile consumers, was caught by the NY Times sending precise location data to dubious third-parties.. In 2017, Accuweather wore the crown for sketchiest weather ...
The p-median problem is often used to locate P service facilities in a geographically distributed population. Important for the performance of such a model is the distance measure.. Distance measure can vary if the accuracy of the road network varies. The rst aim in this study is to analyze how the optimal location solutions vary, using the p-median model, when the road network is alternated. It is hard to nd an exact optimal solution for p-median problems. Therefore, in this study two heuristic solutions are applied, simulating annealing and a classic heuristic. The secondary aim is to compare the optimal location solutions using dierent algorithms for large p-median problem. The investigation is conducted by the means of a case study in a rural region with an asymmetrically distributed population, Dalecarlia.. The study shows that the use of more accurate road networks gives better solutions for optimal location, regardless what algorithm that is used and regardless how many service facilities ...

Fire control services are critical services in every society which aim at protecting life and property. Kenya has experienced fire breakouts in recent years, where property worth millions of shillings was destroyed and lives were lost. Indeed Urban fire is a menace to property and human lives, for both the developing and developed countries. When a fire breaks out, it requires immediate fire control services. Globally, the fire control system has embraced the use of GIS technology which enhances efficiency in controlling fire incidents, thus saving lives and preventing destruction of property. GIS is computer software that links geographic information (where things are) with descriptive information (what things are). It integrates geographic features with tabular data to assess and better understand real-world problems. Fire services in Nairobi County are mainly provided by the Countys Fire Department. To become competitive and resilience, the County ought to minimize loss of lives and damage ...
An embodiment of the present invention includes a GPS receiver capable of concurrently tracking up to eight GPS satellites. The GPS receiver comprises computer-implemented methods for parallel search, split search and precomputation. The parallel search method causes the apparent Doppler frequency spectrum to be sectioned into several segments and a first GPS satellite signal is searched for in parallel in each of the segments. When the first GPS fix is not found after a predetermined time has expired, a split search is begun.
The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is capable of transmitting a broad range of viruses to humans. Since its introduction at the end of the 20th century, it has become well established in large parts of southern Europe. As future expansion as a result of climate change can be expected, determining the current and projected future climatic suitability of this invasive mosquito in Europe is of interest. Several studies have tried to detect the potential habitats for this species, but differing data sources and modelling approaches must be considered when interpreting the findings. Here, various modelling methodologies are compared with special emphasis on model set-up and study design. Basic approaches and model algorithms for the projection of spatio-temporal trends within the 21st century differ substantially. Applied methods range from mechanistic models (e.g. overlay of climatic constraints based on geographic information systems or rather process-based approaches) to correlative niche models.

Our study had 80% power at a two-sided α = 0.05 level to detect an OR of 1.90 for residential petrochemical exposure. We did not detect any association between residential exposure to petrochemicals and the risk of brain tumors when cumulative exposure levels were assessed by our geographic information system-based approach. In a population-based study in Sweden, occupational exposure to petrochemicals was found to be associated with increased risk of glioma (11). The Swedish study is not directly comparable with ours, however, because of differences in population characteristics, exposure levels, and disease types. To our knowledge, this is the first study which specifically addresses the association between the incidence of brain tumors and residential petrochemical exposure in a population-based case-control setting. Our study has several major strengths including: (a) the choice of controls from a population registry, (b) the use of complete residential history (rather than only the current ...

Clive Robinson • August 14, 2009 8:32 AM What is needed is partialyephemeral location data.. That is location data usefull to the individual and their friends does not need to be anything other than current (if they want to route locate for excercise etc logging then they need to do it explicitly not implicitly).. Information of use to rescue services (finding lost persons etc) again needs to be current plus stretching back no more than 5 hours.. Only for certain individuals does the state need to keep location data in the identifiable form.. However properly anonymised data on the general populus is of great benifit to planners ond other civic amenity organisations.. Arguably historians might find location data usefull a generation or so later but then only in the general sense for the majority of the population.. Information usefull to a police state is the only personal location data that needs to be kept for a life time by anybody other than the individual and their immediate friends and ...

Advances in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), statistical methodology and availability of high-resolution georeferenced health and environmental data have created unprecedented opportunities for spatial epidemiology to investigate local geographic variation in disease [1]. GIS has become widely used to locate the study population by geocoding addresses, using proximity analysis of pollution sources as a surrogate for exposure, and integrating environmental monitoring data into the analysis of health outcomes [2]. As the capabilities of GIS have improved, address geocoding has become a very accessible research methodology and as a result the individual address is becoming a standard level of spatial investigation. Geocoding results are often used to determine the population or sub-population of which the study subjects are a part (for example, using census enumeration units) or to determine the relationship to other factors which vary spatially (such as air quality, distance to pollution ...

Estimation of the potential radiological risks associated with highway transport of radioactive materials (RAM) requires input data describing population densities adjacent to all portions of the route to be traveled. Previously, aggregated risks for entire multi-state routes were adequately estimated from population data with low geographic resolution. Current demands for geographically-specific risk estimates require similar increases in resolution of population density adjacent to route segments. With the advent of commercial geographic information systems (GISs) and databases describing highways, U.S. Census Blocks, and other information that is geographically distributed, it became feasible to determine and tabulate population characteristics along transportation routes with 1-kilometer resolution. This report describes an automated method of collecting population data adjacent to route segments (for calculation of incident-free doses) based on a commercial GIS. It also describes a statistical

Thin cirrus clouds (optical depth (OD) , 0.3) are often undetected by standard cloud masking in satellite aerosol retrieval algorithms. However, the Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) aerosol retrieval has the potential to discriminate between the scattering phase functions of cirrus and aerosols, thus separating these components. Theoretical tests show that MISR is sensitive to cirrus OD within Max{0.05, 20%}, similar to MISRs sensitivity to aerosol OD, and MISR can distinguish between small and large crystals, even at low latitudes, where the range of scattering angles observed by MISR is smallest. Including just two cirrus components in the aerosol retrieval algorithm would capture typical MISR sensitivity to the natural range of cirrus properties; in situations where cirrus is present but the retrieval comparison space lacks these components, the retrieval tends to underestimate OD. Geographic information system (GIS) techniques are extremely powerful, but they tend to be complex, and often require a high degree of skill and training in order to use them. Using systems analysis, the fundamental environmental management data were identified and a simplified spatial approach was developed to manage these environmental data. Johnstown Castle Research Centre consists of three farms, ornamental grounds, forests, lakes and streams. A set of database tables was generated to hold farm environmental data on these farms. These included: annual management summary data giving the average number of different types of animals, the amount of organic manure and N, P and K nutrients produced by them, fertiliser purchases, organic and chemical nutrient usage on the farm, ...

Took me two days to figure this out. I needed to calculate the bearing of line segments comprising polygons *(think rays of the sun radiating from outside of sphere). This python code calculates a bearing wherein N=0; E=90; S=180; W=270. This is the same as Aarons workflow (Dec 15 2012): add field, calculate field, etc. However, this yields a continuous 0-2pi radians value corresponding to a standard bearing on a compass. Much easier to interpret and work with than other answers I have seen. Much appreciation to all the posts that helped me solve this one. Hope this helps!. Workflow with polygon ...

Fujitsus key focus of this project was the development of a metadata discovery mechanism that allows metadata catalogues held by the different organisations to become searchable via the Web.
The Zika virus continues to proliferate across Latin America. In a bid to rid the nation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito known to transmit the virus, Brazil mobilized nearly a quarter million military personnel for a one-day "mega operation" to exterminate breeding grounds. But as this so-called ground war rages on, could the newest weapon in the fight against Zika come from space?. In experimental studies, researchers are harnessing high-resolution satellite imagery and geographic information systems (GIS) to map, measure, and control the spread of mosquitoes that may carry Zika, dengue fever, and other harmful diseases. The rise of open-source satellite imagery, such as Google Earth; the proliferation of handheld GPS devices; and advances in GIS software mean that geospatial information is more widely accessible to public health officials. Image quality has also become sharper and more detailed, allowing researchers to more effectively visualize and project the spread of mosquito-borne ...

When I first started GeoSpatial Experts in 2001, digital mapping was something foreign to most people outside of GIS (Geographic Information System) professionals. Google Earth and Google Maps didnt exist. No one had heard the term geotagging. There werent commercial cameras with GPS, most cell phones didnt have GPS, and a cell phone camera wasnt commonplace. I developed my companys first product, GPS-Photo Link to fill a gap, allowing people to marry a photo and GPS coordinates with the intent to map, report, or watermark the results. Now GeoJot+ is helping them to include more attribute information and use the latest mobile technology ...

This year I was very proud of myself. I was organised in October to send of the Christmas pressies to my brother and his family in France. Usually I realise mid-december that the last posting date was months past. Imagine my suprise when the parcel arrived back at our house again. I had missed out a crucial part of the address, in fact I did not have the crucial part of the address in my address book. I have added a new outer parcel and sent it back again, fingers crossed they might get it in time for Easter. The strange thing is I have sent him parcels to this address for quite a few years. I am wondering did he ever recieve any of them ...

There are many potential sources for obtaining the geographical coordinates of health facilities: Ministry of Health or Planning, the Central Statistics Office , the Department of Land Surveys, University geographic departments, or other institutions. Where coordinates on each individual health facility may not be available, the coordinates of the nearest village may be. Coordinates of the villages would be sufficient to start development of the GIS database.. If geographical coordinates for the health facilities are not available, it may be possible to approximate them by identifying their position on existing maps. These maps need to be sufficiently detailed to include village names and positions. They may be obtainable from the relevant ministry or Government department.. Using these maps, LEP will endeavor to digitize the position of the health facilities on a computer. In some countries, it may be possible for unmapped health facilities (i.e. those for which the geographical coordinates are ...
In this paper, we propose a model of a digital biological ecosystem of fish. Collections of fish data by scientists in Malaysia have been converted and developed into a digital biological ecosystem using computational technology and methods. We used a combination of Geographical Information System, databases and ontologies for storing, retrieving and visualizing fish species distribution and their abundance as well as their relationship with the environment. We used ArcGIS to build the fish and environmental geodatabase, which is linked to Google Earth for real-time visualization, and Surfer 8 to create contour maps which are superimposed as layers on the ArcGIS interface. Individual fish species on the map are hyperlinked to the FishBase Portal (http://www.fishbase.org/) while the published map is displayed using ArcReader. The three databases that we created contain information about fish species, environment and contours. These are also integrated using a fish ontology which will link all the ...
