The genus Gaultheria, comprised of approximately 134 species, is mostly used in ethnic drugs to cure rheumatism and relieve pain. Phytochemical investigations of the genus Gaultheria have revealed the presence of methyl salicylate derivatives, C6-C3 constituents, organic acids, terpenoids, steroids, and other compounds. Methyl salicylate glycoside is considered as a characteristic ingredient in this genus, whose anti-rheumatic effects may have a new mechanism of action. In this review, comprehensive information on the phytochemistry, volatile components and the pharmacology of the genus Gaultheria is provided to explore its potential and advance research.

Commercial essential oils from 29 plant species were tested for their nematicidal activity against the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. Good nematicidal activity against B. xylophilus was achieved with essential oils of Gaultheria fragrantissima and Zanthoxylum alatum. GC-MS analysis of the corresponding oils led to the identification of two and ten major compounds, respectively. Four compounds, methyl salicylate, ethyl salicylate, methyl trans-cinnamate and ethyl trans-cinnamate, were tested individually for their nematicidal activities against the pine wood nematode. Methyl and ethyl salicylates showed strong nematicidal activity at concentration of 2.0 mg ml-1. Concentrations of 1.0 mg ml-1, as well as lower concentrations showed only minor effects. Another compound, methyl trans-cinnamate, showed 100% activity at concentrations of 0.0625-2.0 mg ml-1. With ethyl trans-cinnamate, 100% mortality was observed at concentrations of 0.25-2.0 mg ml-1. The essential oils and their components
The flowers of P. mucronata are dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers are borne on different plants. This is important to know if you expect to have berries on your plants.. One male plant should be sufficient for a group of about 8 female plants. A low growing male cultivar called Thymifolia is a good choice as a pollinator especially where a neater growth habit is favoured. There is a hermaphrodite plant which produces bright carmine-red berries called Bells Seedling which is an Irish cultivar. One solitary plant can produce berries without the need for the company of a pollinator.. The edibility of Gaultheria mucronata berries is a subject clouded in confusion, with some texts stating that all members of the genus have poisonous berries. I have eaten them, enjoyed them, and survived!. It is known that South American natives have valued the berries for their taste and health benefits. The texture of the flesh is somewhat watery and the skin dryish, but it is not unpleasant at ...

The sun appeared briefly on Monday and I could not resist, after breakfast, a quick sortie to the terrace to repot the wintergreen which had been sitting in its plastic pot for so long. I took the dead Euphorbia Diamond Frost from its terra cotta and replaced it with the gaultheria, whose roots were quite thickly netted around the edges. The berries are still impeccable and the leaves shiny and green. A lovely little plant and much appreciated when the terrace turns drab. I did some tidying up, finding some viable, nameless lily bulbs under the euphorbia and putting them in the big pot where the baby fennels, offshoots of this summers fronds, have been planted. I wonder if the fennel will make it. I cleaned up leaves from the gravel, pinched some catnip leaves for the cat who joined me on the stone table, and covered a couple of pots with terra cotta saucers to prevent excessive snowmelt and consequent rotting of lily bulbs in them. The fig is under the grill and wrapped in black plastic and I ...

This is a list of genera in the plant family Ericaceae, which includes the heaths, heathers, epacrids, and blueberries. As currently circumscribed, the family contains about 4000 species into more than 120 genera classified into 9 subfamilies. The list shown here follows the phylogenetic classification of Kron et al. (2002), with modifications as per Stevens et al. (2004), Quinn et al. (2005), Albrecht et al. (2010), Gillespie & Kron (2010), and Craven (2011). Nonetheless, much of the taxonomy within the Vaccinioideae is in flux. Multiple studies of the Gaultherieae have now shown Pernettya, Diplycosia (already including Pernettyopsis), and Tepuia to be nested within Gaultheria, although publication formalizing the transfers are yet to be published. Similarly, most of Vaccinieae has not been investigated using molecular techniques, and many genera are likely paraphyletic or polyphyletic. Neotropical and Old World Vaccinioideae are particularly poorly known. Within the Epacrideae preliminary ...

The flowers, and sometimes the young leaves and rhizomes, are used medicinally. All parts contain the glycoside gaultherin and spiraem, traces of an alkaloid (hehotropine), tannins, a yellow pigment, vanillin and free salicylic acid, produced by the splitting of gaultherin and citric acid. These substances give the plant antipyretic, weak antispasmodic, astringent and antirheumatic properties. The flowers are used in an infusion to treat influenza, and to alleviate headache and rheumatic and arthritic pain. Meadowsweet is gentler on the stomach than aspirin and it is one of the most effective herbal remedies for gastritis and peptic ulcers. Both the leaves and flowers are also strongly diuretic and are used to treat certain bladder and kidney disorders. The fresh root is used in homeopathic preparations ...

T.P Sullivan published a paper on a survey of Saturna Island Ecological reserve provided a description of its virgin Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) forest. The vegetation was quantitatively analyzed with respect to structure and composition. The tree strata dominated the structure of this reserve followed secondarily by the low shrub ad bryophyte strata. Pseudotsuga menziesii was the most important tree species with Tsuga heterophylla ( Western Hemlock) and Thuja plicata ( western red cedar) probably limited by low precipitation and soil structure. Gaultheria shallon ( salal) was the dominant understory species with Gaultheria shallon ( salal) and Hylocomium splendens dominating the Bryophyte stratum .. Objective: To clarify the botanical origin of commercial samples of Chinese drug Tougucao and the regions where it has been used, and to provede scientific basis for the species systematics and quality evaluation. Methods: Commercial samples were collected countrywidely, and studied macroscopically and microscopically for finding out their botanical origin. Results: Tougucao used in different provinces or districts are derived from 14 species (belonging to 8 families). Conclusion: Speranskia tuberculata, Impatiens balsamina and Clematis intricata are the chief species, respectively used in the Northwest, East China, North China etc. Vicia plants, Incarvillea sinensis, Gaultheria yunnanensis etc. are used respectively in certain provinces and districts as local drug.
The Gaultheria species share the common characteristic of producing oil of wintergreen. Wintergreen oil is a pale yellow or pinkish fluid liquid that is strongly aromatic with a sweet, woody odor (components: methyl salicylate (about 98%), α-pinene, myrcene, delta-3-carene, limonene, 3,7-guaiadiene, and delta-cadinene)[4] that gives such plants a distinctive medicinal smell whenever bruised. Salicylate sensitivity is a common adverse reaction to the methyl salicylate in oil of wintergreen; it can produce allergy-like symptoms or asthma. Wintergreen essential oil is usually obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of the plant following maceration in warm water. Methyl salicylate is not present in the plant until formed by enzymatic action from a glycoside within the leaves as they are macerated in warm water.[5] Oil of wintergreen is also manufactured from some species of birch, but these deciduous trees are not called wintergreens. Spiraea plants also contain methyl salicylate in large ...
There are claims that it is not possible to find a natural Wintergreen Essential Oil. It is true that many dishonest companies are guilty of rebadging Wintergreen Oil.
