Worldwide, gastrointestinal disorders are common complaints in the general population and must be monitored by community health care organizations [14, 15]. For this purpose, questionnaires can be very helpful because they are easy to use extensively, can gather a lot of information rapidly, and are relatively inexpensive (particularly in comparison to monthly check ups) [16-18].. In the present study, gastrointestinal complaints were reported by a very high proportion (81.9%) of shift-workers. This proportion was twice as large as that reported in a previous study in Korea [19]. This could be due to environmental factors, hospital organization, social factors, insufficient welfare facilities, inordinate hours of working or erratic shifts, or even perhaps inappropriate answers to various questionnaires. On the other hand, Scott and colleagues reported 75% of gastrointestinal complaints in night-workers [20].. In our population of nurses in Iran, the prevalence of GI symptoms was significantly ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Gastrointestinal Dysfunction in Parkinsons Disease. AU - Pfeiffer, Ronald. PY - 2018/12/1. Y1 - 2018/12/1. N2 - Purpose of review: During the past 25 years, there has been an explosion of information regarding the occurrence of gastrointestinal dysfunction in Parkinsons disease. In this review, the clinical features of gastrointestinal dysfunction in Parkinsons disease will be described and information regarding the potential role of the enteric nervous system and the gut microbiome in the genesis of Parkinsons disease will be addressed. Recent findings: Recognition is growing regarding the role that gastroparesis and small intestinal dysfunction may play in Parkinsons disease, especially with regard to erratic responses to anti-Parkinson medication. The presence of enteric nervous system involvement in Parkinsons disease is now well established, but whether the enteric nervous system is the starting point for Parkinsons disease pathology remains a source of debate. The ...

Colic. Colic is a problem that affects some babies during the first 3 to 4 months of life. It can be very stressful and frustrating to parents. Healthcare providers have defined colic as prolonged or excessive crying in an infant who is otherwise well. The crying can be very loud and can last for several hours a day. Colic often starts by 3 weeks of age, is at its worst around 6 weeks, and gradually gets better by about 3 months of age. It is not clear what causes colic. Many people think that colic is caused by belly cramps or gas, but no one really knows for sure. Treatment for gas or changing formulas has not been shown to decrease crying in a colicky baby. Talk to your childs healthcare provider if you think there is a gastrointestinal problem making your baby fussy. Some of the reasons babies may have colic include the following: ...

N2 - For decades, interactions between the enteric neuromuscular apparatus and the central nervous system have served as the primary focus of pathophysiological research in the functional gastrointestinal disorders. The accumulation of patient reports, as well as clinical observations, has belatedly led to an interest in the role of various luminal factors and their interactions with each other and the host in functional gastrointestinal disorders. Most prominent among these factors has been the role of food. As a consequence, although not always evidence-based, dietary interventions are enjoying a renaissance in irritable bowel syndrome management. Not surprisingly, given its ...

Epidemiological study on the Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, 978-3-659-49195-5, Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are common in the community, are of chronic nature and pose a significant health care burden. The causes and pathogenetic mechanisms of FGIDs are not fully known. FGID are classified into three major domains: functional dyspepsia, functional bowel disorders including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and heartburn. The aim was to study the natural history of FGID in the Icelandic population over a 10-year period. Only one other study has been performed on FGIDs using the same methodology, in Olmsted County Minnesota, USA and thus providing the possibility of a direct comparison. Secondary objectives of the study were: 1) to compare the prevalence and stability of IBS according to the Manning criteria, Rome II, Rome III subtypes, and self-reported IBS over a 10 year period: 2) to study IBS and dysmenorrhea in women and to assess the change in IBS over menopause: 3) to study
Functional gastrointestinal disorders are common in children and adolescents with complaints of abdominal pain. Our brains and our GI tracts are closely connected (the mind-body connection). Functional GI conditions are due to a combination of extra sensitivity of the GI tract, with changes in the motility or movement of the digestive system. Our stomachs and intestines are moving food all the time, and some people feel this more intensely than other people. Its as if the volume has been turned up from their GI tract. When their brains receive these sensations, its reaction can change the motion of the GI tract. These conditions are common, sometimes run in families, and are usually found in individuals who are otherwise healthy. In children, that means they are growing well, have normal lab and x-ray results, and dont have alarm symptoms like blood in the stool, weight loss or fevers. The most common pediatric functional GI condition is functional abdominal pain. Children with this ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Dietary lipids and functional gastrointestinal disorders. AU - Feinle-Bisset, Christine. AU - Azpiroz, Fernando. PY - 2013/5/1. Y1 - 2013/5/1. N2 - There is convincing evidence that patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) exhibit dysfunctions of the gut involving hypersensitivity and abnormal reflexes, so that physiological, normally unperceived, stimuli induce symptoms. The type of symptoms depends on the specific sensory-reflex pathways and region(s) affected. Fat modulates the responses of the gut to various stimuli, and some of these modulatory mechanisms are abnormal in patients with FGIDs. Indeed, laboratory-based studies have shown that the symptoms experienced by these patients can be induced, or exacerbated, by administration of lipids in amounts that are well tolerated by healthy controls, and, thus, demonstrate a hypersensitivity to lipid. Very few studies have evaluated dietary patterns and eating behavior in these patients, with often-conflicting ...

These findings do not support a distinct pathology unique to autism. Additionally, Wakefields original claim was essentially, MMR vaccination, then appearance of gastrointestinal symptoms, then regression into autism. So not only was Wakefields original claim roundly disproven, but Balzola et al.s findings do not indicate anything remotely descriptive of Wakefields original claim. This abstract also remains just that, i.e. an abstract presented at a meeting 5 years ago and has not gone through any peer-review, nor publication.. Finally, number 5, Galiatsatos et al., is a case report, featuring two adult patients with gastrointestinal problems and an ASD diagnosis. The authors call for more investigations in their discussion.. So what do we have here? Three (3) genuinely published cases of autistic adults who had consulted a doctor for gastrointestinal problems and were found to have gastrointestinal problems. Rome Foundation Introduces New Clinical Tool for Diagnosis of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in The American Journal of Gastroenterology: Functional GI Disorders Are Common, Comprise about 40 percent of GI Diagnoses
BACKGROUND: Adults with Down syndrome (DS) are predisposed to syndromic and environmental gastrointestinal conditions. METHOD: In a hospital-based clinic for adults with DS, a chart audit was conducted to assess the range and frequency of gastrointestinal conditions. RESULTS: From January 2003 to March 2005, 57 patients attended the clinic, average age 37 years (range 17-63), 34(60%) male, and 12(21%) with a history of institutionalisation. Of these, 56 were found to have at least one gastrointestinal concern. Of the genotypic conditions, the prevalence was as follows: 6(12%) of 51 tested had likely celiac disease, 1(2%) had achalasia, 1(2%) inflammatory bowel disease, 1(2%) cholelithiasis, 2(4%) unexplained abnormal liver function tests, 1(2%) extrinsic oesophageal compression, and 5(9%) gastro-oesophageal reflux. Of the environmental conditions, 29(67%) of 43 tested had H. pylori infection; 13(25%) of 53 tested had hepatitis B infection (including 2 HbsAg positive, 0 HbeAg positive), 22(42%) ...

Nausea, abdominal discomfort, and other gastrointestinal symptoms are commonly reported by individuals after drinking alcoholic beverages. The alcohol itself may cause gastrointestinal problems by affecting the gastric emptying process. Researchers at the University Hospital of Heidelberg at Mannheim in Germany conduced a systematic study of the effects of ethanol, alcoholic beverages, and the non-alcohol components of alcoholic beverages on the gastric emptying of solid meals in the human body, and the results suggest that alcohol rehab may improve gastrointestinal problems (Franke et. al., 2005).. The researchers recruited 16 fasting, healthy, male participants who received once weekly 300 ml of pure ethanol, beer, red wine, glucose, and water in a random order. The solutions were given with either a low-calorie or high-calorie solid meal. Real-time ultransonography was utilized to directly view the gastric emptying process. The researchers point out that ultrasonography is simple, ...

The prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in children, particularly from Asia, is largely unknown. There are not many studies done in Asia especially using the Rome IV criteria. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of FGIDs in infants and young children in a representative sample in China. A prospective, cross-sectional, community-based survey was conducted among healthy infants and young children between the ages of 0-4 years in Jinhua and Shanghai, China. A total of 2604 subjects (1300 subjects from Jinhua and 1304 subjects from Shanghai) completed a validated questionnaire on pediatric gastrointestinal symptoms. FGIDs in infants and young children were diagnosed using the Rome IV criteria. According to the Rome IV criteria, the prevalence of having a FGID in Chinese infants and young children is 27.3%. Infant regurgitation (33.9%) was the most common FGID among the 0-6 months old while functional constipation (7.0%) was the most common among the 1-4 years old. Risk
Background:. Functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID) is the most common gastrointestinal disease in daily clinical practice. The disease is symptomatic but has no identifiable cause by standard diagnostic tests such as endoscopy. It is characterized by its frequent relapses and thus the disease causes a significant level of stress and anxiety to patients. Due to the complexity and chronicity of the disease, it is believed that appropriate counseling on the nature and management of the disease is necessary to decrease patients anxiety level and improve quality of life.. Indication:. Patients who have symptoms suggestive of FGID including non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (NERD), functional dyspepsia (FD) or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).. Aim:. To validate the effectiveness of counseling in patients suffering from FGID.. Method:. Patients recruited to the study will follow the usual management of patients attending the Gastroenterology specialty clinic in Prince of Wales Hospital. ...

Our busy modern lifestyles may be responsible for most cases of constipation. Insufficient fiber and water intake, not doing enough exercise, emotional and psychological problems can contribute to constipation. Persistent, chronic constipation may also be a symptom of health conditions including irritable bowel syndrome, colorectal cancer, diabetes, Parkinsons disease, multiple sclerosis, and depression. Some medications can also cause constipation which includes narcotic type painkiller and iron supplements.. Pilokare is an anti piles, anti-inflammatory, and antiprotozoal drug. It cures internal and external hemorrhoids, controls cramps, dyspepsia, flatulence, and nausea. It arrests bleeding from the bowel, wounds, and infections.. ...
The medication is an oral dose of human immunoglobulin, which contains antibodies to antigens that are thought to overstimulate the immune system and activate an autoimmune response. Some experts believe that the gastrointestinal problems and immune reactions may even be a cause or aggravator of autistic symptoms in some children.. We are not sure why so many kids with autism tend to have these problems, but we do know that digestive problems add to the stress these children and their families already experience in dealing with the autistic disorder, said Dr. Michael Aman, principal investigator of the study at OSU and leader of the Research Unit on Pediatric Psychopharmacology in the College of Medicine and Public Healths Nisonger Center.. The study is designed to determine whether the medication improves gastrointestinal function and assess any related effects on emotions and behavior. In hopes that relieving the gastrointestinal problems might also help the autism, measures of autistic ...

Research has uncovered some factors associated with the expression of IBS. Several of these established links include a major stressful life event, chronic stress, a reported history of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, low birth weight, and environmental triggers such as infection with bacterial gastroenteritis. In some cases, IBS symptom intensity relates to the severity of the specific associated factor. To address some of these factors, and attempt to treat the associated IBS symptoms, a number of studies have examined various psychotherapy treatments, with mixed results.8 These approaches include relaxation training, dynamic psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, and combined psychotherapies. One thorough review published in 2003, showed psychological treatment may be effective for IBS, yet could not identify any one specific therapy to work any better than the others.9. Two recent notable studies with large sample sizes and rigorous methodology demonstrated encouraging results. The first ...
The first bowel movement of a newborn is called meconium. This is a sticky, greenish-black substance that forms in the intestines during fetal development. The baby may have several meconium bowel movements before this substance is completely gone from the babys system. After the first few days, normal bowel movements become yellow and formed in formula-fed babies. They may happen once or twice a day, sometimes more often. Breastfed babies tend to have soft, seedy, yellow-green bowel movements several times a day. They may be as often as every few hours with feedings. Babies with diarrhea have watery, very loose bowel movements that happen very often. A baby may or may not have signs of cramping with the diarrhea. Watery bowel movements and diarrhea in a newborn can quickly lead to severe dehydration. It should be treated right away. Talk with your babys healthcare provider if there is a change in your babys bowel movements or your baby develops diarrhea. If there is blood in the stool, call ...

Problems seen in this group of 30 were gastrointestinal Problems in 8 (Constipation and abdominal pain) Talipes in 5. None in the group had any children and males showed marked testicular tubular failure indicating significant reproductive problems. Thus, long-term prognosis from a medical viewpoint is not bright.. Reardon noted that because of gastrointestinal problems children with CMD will show a positive anal dilation test. This test is sometimes used to diagnosis sexual abuse. Parents with CMD should be aware of this information. ...

Apgar scoring. The Apgar score is one of the first checks of your new babys health. The Apgar score is assigned in the first few minutes after birth to help identify babies that have difficulty breathing or have a problem that needs further care. The baby is checked at one minute and five minutes after birth for heart and respiratory rates, muscle tone, reflexes, and color. Each area can have a score of zero, one, or two, with ten points as the maximum. A total score of ten means a baby is in the best possible condition. Nearly all babies score between eight and ten, with one or two points taken off for blue hands and feet because of immature circulation. If a baby has a difficult time during delivery, this can lower the oxygen levels in the blood, which can lower the Apgar score. Apgar scores of three or less often mean a baby needs immediate attention and care. However, only 1.4 percent of babies have Apgar scores less than seven at five minutes after birth.. ...

Probiotics are common adjunctive therapy used in human and veterinary medicine, mostly intended for gastrointestinal diseases treatment or prevention. Lactic acid bacteria: Lactobacilli, bifid bacteria and enterococci and Saccharomyces boulardii, a subtype of the nonpathogenic yeast have been most frequently used as probiotic active ingredients. To become a recognized effective probiotic, a certain microorganism must fulfill many expectations, primarily the ability to survive gastrointestinal tract passage, adhere to epithelial cells and colonize intestines to present antimicrobial effect and inhibition of enteric pathogens. Prior to evaluation of clinical efficiency, it is advised to perform in vitro studies in order to identify potentially beneficial properties of probiotic organisms. An effective probiotic product could be of a great value in equine medicine, since both, adult horses and foals, frequently exhibit gastrointestinal problems. However, very little objective research has been carried out

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a set of complex neurodevelopmental disorders defined behaviorally by impaired social interaction, delayed and disordered language, repetitive or stereotypic behavior, and a restricted range of interests. ASDs represent a significant public health issue with recent estimates indicating that as many as 1% of children in the United States are diagnosed with an ASD.1,2 Many individuals with ASDs have symptoms of associated medical conditions, including seizures, sleep problems, metabolic conditions, and gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, which have significant health, developmental, social, and educational impacts. Gastrointestinal complaints are a commonly reported concern for parents and may be related to problem behaviors and other medical issues such as dysregulated sleep (ATN Annual Registry Report, unpublished data, November 2009).3 Despite the magnitude of these issues, potential GI problems are not routinely considered in ASD evaluations. This likely ...
