Blood puddings are often supposed to be one of the oldest forms of sausage. Animals are generally bled at slaughter, and as blood does not keep unless prepared in some way, making a pudding with it is one of the easiest ways of ensuring it does not go to waste.[1] While the majority of modern black pudding recipes involve pork blood, this has not always been the case; sheep or cow blood was also used, and one 15th-century English recipe used that of a porpoise, in a pudding eaten exclusively by the nobility.[1] Until at least the 19th century, cow or sheep blood was the usual basis for black puddings in Scotland; Jamiesons Scottish dictionary defined black pudding as a pudding made of the blood of a cow or sheep.[3]. As a product of the slaughtering process, eating black puddings was historically associated with Martinmas, when the annual slaughter of livestock took place. By the 19th century black pudding manufacture was linked with towns known for their large markets for pork, such as ...

If my dad is anything like yours, hes a hard guy to shop for - more so now that he exclaims, I already have too much stuff, dont give me any more! Well… I racked my brain far and wide and decided the best gift would be an edible one! So yesterday afternoon I decided to pull out my Joy the Baker cookbook and make him one of his favorite desserts: rice pudding! Its a fairly easy recipe but, being honest, it does take at least an hour to make - and that time involves lots of laboring over the stove to make sure the rice doesnt burn and the milk doesnt curdle. But it was worth it to see the smile on his face as he blew out his rice pudding birthday cake - the little boy in him was full of glee!. Heres the recipe I used, noting my modifications in italics. If you havent discovered rice pudding take the plunge, it may be a strange looking dessert but it is a delicious one! Joy the Bakers Brown Rice Rice Pudding. ...
I love any kind of pudding. I like baked puddings. I like pudding parfaits. I like custard. I even like the cook and serve kind out of a box. Of course, I prefer homemade, but, I will not pass up the store bought kind. To me, there is nothing more comforting than a bowl of pudding, especially a bowl of warm rice pudding. This is not something that I grew up with. We never really ate rice pudding. But I really have developed a love for it. I could eat it in cold weather or hot weather. It is simply delicious. I know there are a lot of variations on recipes for rice pudding. Some people use pre-cooked rice. Some people make it on a stove like a real pudding. I definitely prefer the baked kind. My recipe is super easy too because you do not have to cook the rice beforehand. Also, puddings are always richer if you use whole milk, but I generally just use whatever I have on hand. If I decide to make rice pudding last minute, I will just use the 2% that I have in the refrigerator. If I know ahead of ...

I love scratch pudding, and it always brings a grin in our house. You see, several years ago, as I was cooking a pudding, Mike was carrying a heavy lamp down our basement stairs when the ceramic globe came off and landed on his hand, cutting it nearly to the bone. Yesterday, while reading a blog post (I cant remember from which site) about the health benefits of kuzu root, I recalled a fabulous chocolate hazelnut pudding I made in a cooking class at the Natural Gourmet Institute located at 48 W.21st Street in New York City. I have enjoyed many wonderful vegan cooking classes at the Natural Gourmet Institute, but this particular pudding was made in a class called Mineral Rich Sea Vegetables taught by the fabulous chef, Jill Gusman. I remembered that the delicious pudding had kuzu root as an ingredient, so I searched through my recipe collection and found what I was looking for. I decided to try it again for dessert last night, and it was as yummy as I remembered it to be
Pudding cake is just what the title advertises: pudding and cake. The wondrous part is that both components materialize in the same pan. Batter is spread in a pan, then sprinkled with a sugar and cocoa powder mixture and liquid. This top layer filters down, essentially swapping places with the batter. The result is a layer of cake floating on top of pudding.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive loss of motor neurons. However, ALS has been recognized to also involve non-motor systems. Subclinical involvement of the autonomic system in ALS has been described. The recently developed C-13-octanoic acid breath test allows the noninvasive measurement of gastric emptying. With this new technique we investigated 18 patients with ALS and 14 healthy volunteers. None of the patients had diabetes mellitus or other disorders known to cause autonomic dysfunction. The participants received a solid standard test meal labeled with C-13-octanoic acid. Breath samples were taken at 15-min intervals for 5 h and were analyzed for (CO2)-C-13 by isotope selective nondispersive infrared spectrometry. Gastric emptying peak time (t(peak)) and emptying half time (t(1/2)) were determined. All healthy volunteers displayed normal gastric emptying with a mean emptying t(1/2) of 138 +/- 34 (range 68-172) min. Gastric ...

Although delayed gastric emptying is found in some patients with functional dyspepsia, there seems to be little relation between rate of emptying and symptoms. This study examined the hypothesis that food maldistribution rather than gastric stasis may equate to symptoms in such patients and used scintigraphic techniques to quantify the partition of gastric contents between proximal and distal stomach during gastric emptying. Eleven patients with functional dyspepsia characterised by chronic severe postprandial bloating without organic abnormality, and 12 healthy volunteers, ingested a standard meal labelled with technetium-99M (99mTc). Serial images of the gastric area in anterior and posterior projections were taken for 90 minutes, regions of interest for proximal, distal, and total stomach were defined, and activity time curves were derived from the geometric means of anterior and posterior counts. Total emptying in patients (median: 46 minutes; range: 30-76) was not significantly different ...

Although the pathophysiology of idiopathic gastroparesis remains unclear, some mechanisms and explanations are evolving (Figure 1). Vagal function and regulation have been shown to be impaired among patients with DG, however, to a lesser extent in IG.8,9 Also, the role of the vagus nerve in ghrelin secretion has been proposed. Ghrelin is released mainly by neuroendocrine cells in the gastric fundus and duodenum and has been suggested to function as an appetite-stimulating hormone acting centrally through vagal afferent pathways.8 Ghrelin also has also been shown to stimulate gastric contractility and improve meal related symptoms and gastric emptying (GE) in IG patients.10 Full thickness gastric biopsies in patients with gastroparesis (compared to matched-controls) revealed that nNOS expression was more frequently decreased in IG than in DG (40% vs 20%). Increased connective tissue stroma, however, was visualized in both IG and DG via electron microscopy.11 Loss of interstitial cells of Cajal ...
What is Gastroparesis? Gastroparesis is a condition characterized by delayed stomach emptying. In a normally functioning stomach, gastric contractions move food material through the gastrointestinal tract. Patients with gastroparesis experience slow or erratic stomach contractions, which halts the digestive process. Common symptoms of gastroparesis include abdominal pain, bloating, reduced appetite and weight loss.. What Causes Gastroparesis?. One of the most common causes of gastroparesis is a damaged vagus nerve, the main nerve that communicates with the digestive tract. Injury to the vagus nerve interrupts impulses that control involuntary muscles in the stomach, gallbladder and intestines which stimulate secretions and contractions.. Gastroparesis can also be caused by uncontrolled diabetes, medications and other nerve disorders.. Common Misconceptions about Gastroparesis. Big Skys bread pudding recipe starts with a basic custard used throughout the year for other seasonal bread puddings like apple for fall and banana in winter. But Weiss employs a simple technique to make the bread puddings texture a bit lighter. To make it more custard than quiche, he adds air by whipping the eggs and sugar for several minutes until the mixture reaches the ribbon stage. Weiss also adds butter in tiny cubes. When the bread pudding bakes, the butter melts to enrich the whole pan but still, he says, tiny pockets of butter remain, adding to the taste experience. ...

Gastroparesis (GP) is associated with depletion of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) and enteric neurons, which leads to pyloric dysfunction followed by severe nausea, vomiting and delayed gastric-emptying. Regenerating these fundamental structures with stem cell therapy, would be helpful to restore gastric function in GP. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have been successfully used in animal models of other gastrointestinal (GI) diseases including colitis. However, no study has been performed with these cells on GP animals. In this study, we explored if mouse MSC can be delivered from a hydrogel-scaffold to the luminal surfaces of GP mice stomach. Mouse MSC was seeded atop alginate-gelatin, coated with poly-L-lysine. These cell-gel constructs were placed atop stomach explants facing the luminal side. MSC grew uniformly all across the gel surface within 48 hr. When placed atop the lumen of the stomach, MSC migrated from the gels to the tissues as confirmed by positive staining with Vimentin and N-cadherin.

Whats better than Bread and Butter Pudding? Chocolate Bread and Butter Pudding Cake with Strawberries!! Yes, it looks like a layer cake, but its really a chocolatey bread pudding!
Oh man. This type of baked good is my favorite! Its a sweet bread roll filled with a thick vanilla pudding and sprinkled with raisins. I abhor raisins, so I only sprinkled half of the buns with the evil little things because Mr. Wing-It does like them. The combination of bread and pudding is so addictive for me. This is the kind of baked good that I would like to eat every single day for breakfast. And then later as a snack. And later as another snack. I halved the recipe because I knew I wouldnt be able to control myself around them, and indeed all self-control was lost as soon as they came out of the oven. My three raisin-free rolls were devoured almost instantly, and then I stole one of Mr. Wing-Its raisin-full rolls, picked out the raisins and had it for breakfast today. Yep. Thanks for sharing the recipe Mihl ...

N2 - The adsorption of hydrogen on Ge(001) has been studied with scanning tunneling microscopy at 77 K. For low doses (100 L) a variety of adsorption structures has been found. We have found two different atomic configurations for the Ge-Ge-H hemihydride and a third configuration that is most likely induced by the dissociative adsorption of molecular hydrogen. The Ge-Ge-H hemihydride is either buckled antiparallel or parallel to the neighboring Ge-Ge dimers. The latter configuration has recently been predicted by M. W. Radny et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 128, 244707 (2008)], but not observed experimentally yet. Due to the presence of phasons some dimer rows appear highly dynamic.. The assessment of gastric accommodation and emptying by different methodologies provides inconsistent results. We aimed to compare magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), barostat and 13C-acetate breath test (BT) for the assessment of gastric volume responses and emptying in healthy controls (HC) and patients with functional dyspepsia (FD). Eight HC and eight FD patients underwent: (i) continuous BT with simultaneous MRI in the upright position after ingestion of isocaloric, 300 kcal, 200 and 800 mL meals, both labelled with 100 mg of (13)C-acetate; and (ii) BT with gastric barostat after ingestion of the 200 mL meal. MRI measured total gastric volume and gastric content volume (GCV) at baseline, after filling and during emptying. Meal emptying half-times (T(1/2)) for MRI and BT were calculated (mean +/- SD). We found: (i) Initial GCV was lower in FD than in HC (762 +/- 22 vs 810 +/- 52 mL, P , 0.04) after the 800 mL meal but not the 200 mL meal. T(1/2)(MRI) was shorter for the 800 mL than the 200 mL ...
Chronic gastroparesis is a motility dysfunction often associated with severe symptoms, the most common disabling symptoms being nausea and vomiting. The term gastroparesis is a Greek word that means a weakness of movement. In this article, some basic facts about gastroparesis are briefly mentioned before aspects on therapy are discussed.. Gastroparesis is defined as delayed gastric emptying in the absence of an obstruction to outflow from the stomach. Hence, the diagnostic procedure in patients with symptoms suggestive of gastroparesis should include at least gastroscopy, so as to exclude obstructive lesions. Furthermore, a gastric emptying test is required to verify abnormal emptying of the stomach. Although delayed emptying of both liquids and solids occurs in patients with gastroparesis, the delayed emptying of solids is considered the most relevant disturbance. Thus, a test of solid emptying is usually applied. The scintigraphic method is considered to be the gold standard. Reference ...
August is gastroparesis month, and its a great time to learn more about this digestive condition. Many people do not realize how important our ability to break down food is until they experience problems. What do you need to know about Gastroparesis?. What Is Gastroparesis?. Gastroparesis is a weakness in the stomach muscles. This causes poor grinding of the food a person eats. Normally, food is ground into pieces by muscle contractions in the stomach. Ground up particles and liquid are gradually emptied into the small intestine. A metering process ensures that food is mixed with adequate digestive juices.. If the stomach muscles are weakened, then the contractions do not thoroughly grind food particles. Contents are not emptied into the intestine properly.. What Are the Symptoms of Gastroparesis?. Vomiting and nausea are the two main symptoms of gastroparesis. Some patients also experience bloating that may or may not come with abdominal distension. Other symptoms include:. ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Gastric accommodation measurements by single photon emission computed tomography and two-dimensional scintigraphy in diabetic patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms. AU - Chedid, Victor. AU - Halawi, Houssam. AU - Brandler, Justin. AU - Burton, Duane. AU - Camilleri, Michael. PY - 2019/1/1. Y1 - 2019/1/1. N2 - Objective: To compare estimates of gastric accommodation (GA) with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to measurements based on intragastric meal distribution immediately post-meal ingestion (IMD 0 ). Methods: We evaluated 108 diabetics with upper gastrointestinal (UGI) symptoms who had undergone gastric emptying of solids (GE) by scintigraphy and GA measurements by SPECT. Immediately after ingestion of a 99m Tc-labeled egg meal (time 0), we estimated IMD 0 as radioactive counts or area of the proximal half of the stomach on two-dimensional images. Gastric volume (GV) during fasting and after 300 mL Ensure ® was measured by SPECT to quantify ...
There is no medication that will cure gastroparesis. The only cure is months or years of normal blood sugars. There are, however, some pharmaceutical preparations that may speed the emptying of your stomach after a meal if your gastroparesis is only mild or moderate in severity (page 361, footnote). These will help smooth out your blood sugar profiles after that meal. Most diabetics with mild to moderate gastroparesis will require medication before every meal.. When gastroparesis is very mild, it may be possible to get away with medication only before supper. For some reason-perhaps because most people tend not to be as physically active after supper, and may have their largest meal of the day in the evening-digestion of supper appears to be more impaired than that of other meals. It is also likely that stomach-emptying is slower in the evening, even for nondiabetics.. Medications for gastroparesis may take the form of liquids or pills. The question immediately arises that if pills must ...
Can gastroparesis kill you - Can gastroparesis kill you? Gastroparesis. I have never seen a death due to gastroparesis alone. Theoretically, the resulting dehydration from the vomiting could kill you, if not treated appropriately, particularly if you have other disease conditions. Gastroparesis usually involves chronic vomiting due to paralysis of the stomach which leads to dehydration, and often requires hospitalization to manage the dehdyration and salt losses.
