A method and apparatus for tentering nonwoven webs during annealing. The nonwoven web of thermoplastic fibers is restrained on a tentering structure at a plurality of tentering points distributed across an interior portion of the web, rather than just along its edges. The nonwoven web is annealed while restrained on the tentering structure to form a dimensionally stable nonwoven fibrous web, dimensionally stable up to at least the heatsetting temperature. The annealed nonwoven fibrous web is then removed from the tentering structure. In one embodiment, the tentering structure restrains the nonwoven fibrous web in a non-planar configuration during the annealing process. The tentering structure includes a plurality of tentering points projecting distally from a tentering support. The tentering points are positioned to be engaged with an interior portion of the web, thus restraining the web during annealing.

An expansion sleeve for attaching objects to a relatively thin panel comprises a hollow headed bolt threaded externally for its full length and threaded internally at an end portion remote from the head. The unthreaded internal portion of the bolt has an inwardly projecting apertured annular shoulder into which a drift pin may be driven to expand the sleeve on the interior side of a panel to which the sleeve is to be attached. A jamb nut pulls the expanded sleeve portion firmly against the inside of the panel member and thereafter a threaded rod is threaded into the interior threads of the sleeve so that a nut on the threaded rod may be tightened against the sleeve head. This draws the inner end of the sleeve toward the panel member to increase the pressure of the expanded sleeve portion against the panel. An object to be attached to the panel is then connected to the protruding end of the threaded rod.

A shortened tampon applicator of the telescoping tube type employs an ejector tube to store a tampon in its distal end and an outer tube disposed by a slip fit thereover to thus shorten the overall length of the tampon and applicator assembly. Directionally-locking inward flaps fixed within the distal end of said outer tube engage the distal end of the tampon stored in the ejector tube thus securing the latter relative to said outer tube while permitting only distal expulsion therefrom. The ejector tube preferably has inwardly biased flexible portions at its distal end which serve to catch behind the proximal end of the tampon. In the preferred version, the inwardly biased portions are unique undulations at the blunt distal end of the ejector tube.
