Microsatellites were used to conduct an analysis of paternity of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) from Bird Island, South Georgia. At most, only 28% of pups at our study site could be assigned a father, even though the majority (approximat
Northern fur seals prefer cold water and spend a lot of time far out at sea, only returning to land to breed. Most of their breeding grounds are on islands in the northern Pacific. As with most seal species, the male northern fur seals arrive at the breeding grounds first and occupy a territory on the shore. The largest bulls take the best locations, usually in the middle of the beach. Females arriving to give birth move into the territory of a male. They seem to choose according to the location of the territory and the number of other females it contains, rather than by the bulls size. At this stage, the males - called bulls - will not feed for up to two months as they battle to mate with the cows, and will lose a considerable amount of body weight. Dominant northern fur seal bulls may establish harems numbering 40 to 50 cows. The dense underfur of this species, insulating the seals from the cold, consists of 60,000 individual hairs per square centimetre (350,000 per square inch).. ...
We tagged 82 lactating northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) with tri-axial accelerometers and magnetometers on two eastern Bering Sea islands (Bogoslof and St. Paul) with contrasting population trajectories. Using depth data, accelerometer data and spectral analysis we classified time spent diving (30%), resting (~7%), shaking and grooming their pelage (9%), swimming in the prone position (~10%) and two types of previously undocumented rolling behavior (29%), with the remaining time (~15%) unspecified. The reason for the extensive rolling behavior is not known. We ground-truthed the accelerometry signals for shaking and grooming and rolling behaviors-and identified the acceleration signal for porpoising-by filming tagged northern fur seals in captivity. Speeds from GPS interpolated data indicated that animals traveled fastest while in the prone position, suggesting that this behavior is indicative of destination-based swimming. Very little difference was found in the percentages of time spent in the

Her love for marine mammals has also led her to study the vulnerable northern fur seal population, both in our New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center and on the Alaskan islands they call home. In 2010, she received a Cunningham Grant from the Aquarium to volunteer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) researchers who study northern fur seals on the remote Pribilof Islands, where they come each summer to breed and nurse their pups.. Although there are more than 600,000 northern fur seals, climate change, overfishing, and the now-illegal fur trade have diminished the population by more than 50% since the 1950s. To determine best practices for protecting the species, NOAA researchers, with the help of volunteers like Schilling, monitor the adult fur seals and pups on the islands and use sail drones to track the fish populations the fur seals rely on to survive.. The problem the fur seals face now is that the food that theyre eating is low in caloric content, ...

High-density SNP arrays developed for humans and their companion species provide a rapid and convenient tool for generating SNP data in closely-related non-model organisms, but have not yet been widely applied to phylogenetically divergent taxa. Consequently, we used the CanineHD BeadChip to genotype 24 Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) individuals. Despite seals and dogs having diverged around 44 million years ago, 33,324 out of 173,662 loci (19.2%) could be genotyped, of which 173 were polymorphic and clearly interpretable. Two SNPs were validated using KASP genotyping assays, with the resulting genotypes being 100% concordant with those obtained from the high-density array. Two loci were also confirmed through in silico visualisation after mapping them to the fur seal transcriptome. Polymorphic SNPs were distributed broadly throughout the dog genome and did not differ significantly in proximity to genes from either monomorphic SNPs or those that failed to cross-amplify in seals. ...
Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) discovery is an important goal of many studies. However, the number of putative SNPs discovered from a sequence resource may not provide a reliable indication of the number that will successfully validate with a given genotyping technology. For this it may be necessary to account for factors such as the method used for SNP discovery and the type of sequence data from which it originates, suitability of the SNP flanking sequences for probe design, and genomic context. To explore the relative importance of these and other factors, we used Illumina sequencing to augment an existing Roche 454 transcriptome assembly for the Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella). We then mapped the raw Illumina reads to the new hybrid transcriptome using BWA and BOWTIE2 before calling SNPs with GATK. The resulting markers were pooled with two existing sets of SNPs called from the original 454 assembly using NEWBLER and SWAP454. Finally, we explored the extent to which SNPs
Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) male opening its mouth. The male is much larger than the female, reaching a length of up to 2 metres and a weight of 120 kilograms. The males pelt is brown in colour, and includes a mane of shoulder fur. The external ears (pinnae) of a seal are also seen here. This seal ranges throughout the Southern Ocean that surrounds Antarctica, feeding mainly on krill in shallow waters at night. During the breeding season (from November to January) the males compete to secure a harem of females. Photographed on South Georgia. - Stock Image C007/2304
Few models are in place for analysis of extreme lactation patterns such as that of the fur seals which are capable of extended down regulation of milk production in the absence of involution. During a 10-12 month lactation period, female fur seals suckle pups on shore for 2-3 days, and then undertake long foraging trips at sea for up to 28 days, resulting in the longest intersuckling bouts recorded. During this time the mammary gland down regulates milk production. We have induced Cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus) mammary cells in vitro to form mammospheres up to 900 μm in diameter, larger than any of their mammalian counterparts. Mammosphere lumens were shown to form via apoptosis and cells comprising the cellular boundary stained vimentin positive. The Cape fur seal GAPDH gene was cloned and used in RT-PCR as a normalization tool to examine comparative expression of milk protein genes (αS2-casein, β-lactoglobulin and lysozyme C) which were prolactin responsive. Cape fur seal ...
The MMC is currently closed to the public because it is constructing new pens, pools and buildings, including an extensive visitors center expected to open in the spring of 2008. But during this pupping season, which began in late February, theyve been promoting a Leave Seals Be campaign. Anyone who finds an apparently abandoned seal pup should keep their distance, not touch it and call the centers 24-hour response hotline at 415.289.SEAL. Generally, the person who notifies the center that an animal needs rescuing gets to name that animal. Seals, sea lions, whales, dolphins and sea otters have been named by CHP officers, firefighters, beachcombers, home owners and other community members. Odle2 from Sunnyvale was named for the police officer who arranged for her to be picked up by the MMC. There was already one Odle on the books, so she became Odle2. When she was brought in, she weighed a little over 10 pounds, and was considered to be in critical condition. As of Feb. 18, Odle2 weighs a ...

Cape Fur Seals, (Arctocephalus Pusillus Pusillus) can be found on the coastlines of southern Africa. They are listed on Appendix II of CITES. They have a natural mortality rate of around 30% and are at threat from a 90% loss of preferred habitat, entanglement, drowning in fisheries nets, marine pollution, disease, global warming and the continued persecution by the annual Namibian cull. The Benguela Nino in 2006 resulted in the deaths of over 300 THOUSAND of these animals, the largest mass die-off of all marine mammals in recorded history. Although these are wild animals, they are generally friendly and curious by nature. ...
Trophic changes in populations of Stellar sea lions (Eumetorias jubatus), northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) and harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) in the eastern Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska were studied using stable isotope analysis. Declining populations of all three species of pinnipeds prompted this study to determine if changes in diet, likely resulting from food limitation, contributed to the declines. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios were analyzed in the vibrissae (whiskers) and body tissues of pinnipeds from 1993-1998 and compared with muscle tissue from prey species during the same time period to determine pinniped trophic dynamics. Vibrissae growth rate studies revealed harbor seal vibrissae are only retained for one year and then replaced, while Steller sea lions maintain their vibrissae for several years. Isotopic data from all three species are consistent with diets composed of walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) at various times and locations throughout the year. ...
Seabirds are marine top predators and accumulate high levels of metals and metalloids in their tissues. Contamination by metals in the highly productive offshore region has become a matter of public concern. It is home to 80% of the seabird population in the U.S.A., 95% of northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus), and major populations of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus), walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) and whales. Here, the concentrations of eight heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb) and a metalloid (As) in the liver and kidneys of the northern fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis), thick-billed murre (Uria lomvia), short-tailed shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris), tufted puffin (Fratercula cirrhata) and horned puffin (Fratercula corniculata) collected in the Bering Sea were measured ...
Driftnet fisheries throughout the world are discussed and reviewed in relation to current controversies surrounding their usage. In the North Pacific, high seas driftnet fisheries exist for salmon, for squid, and for tunas and billfishes. The Japanese high seas salmon driftnet fishery has declined from a peak of 500 catcher vessels in 1956 to 43 by 1988, each vessel setting around 15 km of netting per night. The 1988 catch was 2550 tonnes of salmon. Non-target species caught have included Dalls porpoises (Phocoenoides dalli) and northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus), as well as more than 23 species of seabirds, notably short-tailed shearwaters (Puffinus tenuirostris) and tufted puffins (Lunda cirrhata). High seas drift net fisheries for squid involve over 700 vessels from three nations, taking over 200 000 tonnes of squid annually, using nets typically 40-50 km in length. Non-target catches include northern right whale dolphins (Lissodelphis borealis) and Pacific white-sided dolphins ...
The Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) population has displayed a relatively slow rate of recovery since being hunted by commercial sealers during the early 19th century. Despite this, population abundance doubled in the past 2 - 3 decades, indicating that the population growth rate has recently increased. Yet, the factors influencing the populations dynamics are poorly understood, primarily because basic demographic rates are unknown. Female age, survival, fecundity, breeding and physiology were studied at Kanowna Island, Bass Strait, Australia, between 2003 - 2006 by conducting censuses and captures (n = 294). Mark-recapture estimates of pup production were used to validate direct pup counts, allowing a 9-year dataset to be used for calculation of the population growth rate (2.2% p.a.) and investigation of environmental influences on reproductive success. Annual pup production (x = 3108) was synchronous, with 90% of births occurring within 28 days of the median birth date ...
Cape Cross is about 120 km north of Swakopmund along the desert coastline of Namibia. It was one of the first landfalls of European explorers in southern Africa; Bartholomew Diaz erected a cross here. It consists of a rocky promontory, to the south of which is series of lagoons, which have a total area of about 5000 ha. The sandy barrier between the lagoons and the ocean consists of sediments brought down by the Orange River, and swept north by the actions of the Benguela Upwelling System. The lagoons are maintained by seepage of seawater, and by waves overtopping the barrier during spring high tides.. Cape Cross has a large Cape Fur Seal Arctocephalus pusillus population, numbering about 150 000 animals. It is on the mainland, so unlike island-based seal colonies, it is not space-limited.. Entrepeneurs have developed a simple but effective way of producing guano at the Cape Cross lagoons. Three wooden platforms with a total area of 68 000 ha were erected in the 1950s to provide a breeding and ...

The investigation into the level and distribution of genetic variation in the Antarctic and subantarctic fur seals was conducted using two classes of molecular marker. The mitochondrial control region is a commonly used marker for investigation into population genetics issues, due in part to the relatively high rate of mutation. Microsatellites are highly variable regions within the nuclear genome, and with a bi-parental mode of inheritance, provide a natural complement to the maternally inherited mitochondrial genes. Given that historic records indicate both fur seal species had passed through population bottlenecks as a result of sealing, it was suspected that the current level of genetic variation may be low. This is because reduced levels of variation have been observed in other species that have passed through extreme population bottlenecks at some stage in the recent past (eg. the northern elephant seal, Mirounga angustirostris). Surprisingly, the nucleotide diversities of the Antarctic ...

Unlike other West Coast pinnipeds such as harbor seals and sea lions, northern fur seals are pelagic by inclination, meaning they spend most of their lives drifting with the ocean currents. They log only a few weeks a year on isolated islands to whelp and rear their young. Pups are quickly weaned, joining their parents to ply offshore waters in quest of fish and squid. ...

A neurosurgical team at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University has successfully performed what is believed to be a first-of-its-kind brain surgery on a Northern fur seal named Ziggy Star in an attempt to address her worsening neurologic condition. Ziggy, an adult female, is recovering well at her permanent home at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut.. The ability to successfully complete this procedure with many unknown factors is due in large part to the collaboration among colleagues at Cummings and Mystic, said Cummings lead neurosurgeon, Ane Uriarte, DVM, Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Neurology. The combined expertise and skills from all our areas of specialty-from neurosurgery to anesthesia and zoological medicine-was critical to this success.. Ziggy was first seen at the Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals at Cummings Veterinary Medical Center at Tufts University in September for a condition that had progressed over several years ...
As with seabirds and fishes, the composition of the sanctuarys marine mammal community is a mix of permanent and seasonal residents as well as species that use these waters for shorter periods - either as a feeding destination or in transit during long-distance migratory journeys.. Californias central coast is located on a migration pathway between northern feeding grounds and temperate and tropical breeding areas for many marine mammal species. For example, gray whales traverse these waters on their annual migrations between Arctic feeding grounds and Mexican breeding areas; however, in some years, many gray whales will also over-summer in the sanctuary to feed.. Blue and humpback whales are seasonally abundant, migrating into the sanctuary during late spring, summer and fall to feed in its productive waters. Northern fur seals and California sea lions are also seasonally abundant, coming here to forage during the fall through the spring. Smaller cetaceans (e.g., several dolphin and porpoise ...
Hookworms are a leading cause of mortality in seal and sea lion pups. Researchers will investigate if ocean food availability as well as the genetic make-up and immune response in South American fur seal pups affect the severity of hookworm infections. The team will analyze 15 years of collected data on fur seals living on Guafo Island in southern Chile to investigate if changes in ocean sea surface temperature and productivity also are associated with changes in hookworm prevalence and mortality in pups. Identifying drivers for hookworm infections, including marine environment, genetics and immune responses in individual animals, will help researchers develop improved wildlife health programs for mitigating hookworms and other parasitic diseases in marine mammals.. ...
Total deaths are estimated at 5,000, although Gridley says it is difficult to be certain as many carcasses are eaten by scavengers, such as black-backed jackals. She says: We are concerned about emaciated juveniles and adult females as well, which have also been observed at Pelican Point and to the north - indicating a wider scale to this event.. This event could disrupt the normal breeding cycle at the affected colonies. Normally females will give birth to a pup each year, and they come into oestrus shortly afterwards and mate with the bulls. With females aborting pregnancies, they may come into oestrus earlier, but the males may not have organised themselves for mating. Also, the females are very thin and may not be healthy enough to reproduce.. Lack of food, disease and toxins are all possible causes, but there is not enough data yet to confirm the reason, Gridley says. There was a similar large-scale die-off in 1994, where a combination of malnutrition and a secondary bacterial infection, ...

If youre out on local scenic roads at the crack of day, youre likely to see a posse of Crozet cyclists trailing slipstreams, winding like wind down the roads.. Whos riding? goes their nightly sign-up call. Meet-up is at The Mudhouse in Crozet at 6 a.m. Home plate, arrived at after an hour and covering some 18 to 20 miles, is Green House Coffee, where they pull in and stop neatly, as ducks settle on water. They grin with exhilaration. Their toes still have spring in them. They feel alive on their bikes, and when their feet touch the ground again, they flinch and must get used to gravity.. Theyre in snappy, slippery-looking cycling outfits they call kits. The kit the Crozet Cycling Club guys are wearing takes off from the Crozet crest, sporting an azure blue that seems to soar and, right at the wearers heart, a red medieval rose. The look is sort of classy. It was made by Cutaway, a local cycling clothing company operated by Phillip Robb, who is a cycling coach at Miller School, which has ...

The location and timing of predatory attacks are also far from indiscriminate. At high tide on the Farallon Islands, for instance, there is heavy competition for space where northern elephant seals can haul themselves onto the rocks, and the competition forces many low-ranking juve-nile seals into the water. Klimley-along with Peter Pyle and Scot D. Anderson, both wildlife biologists then at the Point Reyes Bird Observatory in California-has shown that at the Farallons, most white-shark attacks take place during high tide, near where the mammals enter and exit the water.. Similarly, at Seal Island, Cape fur seals leave for their foraging expeditions from a small rocky outcrop nicknamed the Launch Pad. Coordinated groups of between five and fifteen seals usually leave together, but they scatter while at sea and return alone or in small groups of two or three. White sharks attack almost any seal at Seal Island-juvenile or adult, male or female-but they particularly target lone, incoming, ...

Our Lady of Guadalupe has also been perceived as a symbol of Mexican female liberation and power, and has simultaneously been heavily associated with feminist theology. Feminist theology promotes equality between men and women, the creation of peace and implementation of justice in religion.[23] She has often been considered a symbol of maternity, female empowerment and social justice and has been celebrated by women not only in Mexico but in Latin America and the United States.[2] The Spanish Conquest of Mexico was not only a revolt and a conquest of people, but it was simultaneously a conquest of women, captured by force and used for gift exchange and or trade.[24] For Mexican-American women today, Our Lady of Guadalupe remains a symbol of dignity and an affirmation of those lives who are questioned.[25] Moreover, the Spanish Conquest of Mexico was not only a time for military defence but also the overrule of old traditions, rituals and gods.[16] To the Indians, Our Lady of Guadalupe is more ...

Lentinellus ursinus. [ Basidiomycetes > Russulales > Auriscalpiaceae > Lentinellus . . . ]. by Michael Kuo. This Lentinellus species is sometimes called the Bear Lentinellus, in a translation of its Latin name--but what that wacky old Swede Elias Fries was thinking is beyond me. Nothing about Lentinellus ursinus strikes me as bear-like . . . except for the bear of a headache involved with identifying it.. At issue (for me, anyway) is the distinction between Lentinellus ursinus and Lentinellus vulpinus (the Fox Lentinellus, if we were to be consistent; one starts to wonder whether the ancients were studying mushrooms or Aesops Fables). In theory Lentinellus vulpinus differs, in part, by having a stem--but the stem is a lateral, one-centimeter job that can be awfully hard to distinguish. Introduction: Parthenium hysterophorus has become a huge problem throughout the world and is menacingly threatening the agriculture and environment. The existing methods for controlling or eradicating P. hysterophorus weed have their own limitations, that is, physical methods are very laborious, costly and ineffective in long term; chemical methods are costly and less environmental friendly and biological methods are not appropriate on large scale. The compost from Parthenium weed can be prepared to recycle the nutrients that are sucked by undesired weed from the soil. Presently, the available methods take a long time in preparing Parthenium compost, while the shorter methods are mostly less ecofriendly. In the present work, a method and recipe have been developed for preparing compost of Parthenium weed in comparatively less time (60 days only) and that too, in an ecofriendly manner; and it has been named as Vishishta composting. The term Vishishta is a Hindi word, which means something ...

A universal seal is shown with orbital movement of a center opening for use in endoscopic surgery A two part seal housing encloses the universal seal in an annulus surrounding an insertion port. The outer periphery of the universal seal is clamped between the two parts at the outer edge of the annulus. An inner ring of the universal seal is free to move from side-to-side inside the annulus while maintaining rubbing contact with the upper and lower surfaces of the annuluses for vertical support. The seal housing and universal seal are mounted on a proximal end of a cannula which allows access therethrough for the endoscopic surgery. The center opening of the universal seal is in general alignment with the insertion port of the seal housing, but the center opening and inner ring may move from side to side when medical instruments are inserted through the insertion port, the center opening, and the cannula and moved from side to side.
A well conveyance apparatus for conveying equipment into a wellbore possessing long-lasting movable and slidable hydraulic seals against the interior of a borehole casing located within a wellbore in a geological formation in the earth that is caused to move by the application of pressurized wellbore fluids against the seals. The seals are allowed to rotate on bearings about the tool mandrel to prevent the build-up of torque on the seals to minimize wear and to extend the life of the seals. Vibratory means are attached to the tool mandrel to vibrate the sealing portion of the seals, so as the extend the life of the seals and to minimize wear of the seals. Sensor arrays provide information to a computer system that is used to control the vibratory means, pressure relief valves, and other parameters to minimize wear of the hydraulic seals.
A seal adapted for use with medical devices is provided with a lead having a distal tip electrode. The distal tip of the lead is adapted for implantation on or about the heart and for connection to a system for monitoring or stimulating cardiac activity. The lead can include a fixation helix for securing the electrode to cardiac tissue. The lead assembly can alternatively include an open lumen lead tip. A seal is provided within the lead tip assembly such that the seal is expanded to prevent or limit further entry of fluids through the lead tip. The seal includes an expandable matrix, such as a hydrogel. The seal is formed on or within the lead when the lead and the seal comes into contact with a fluid and expands. The seal is also formed as a plug which is deployed through the medical device, and expands as the plug absorbs fluid. A housing incorporating the seal can also be attached to a portion of the medical device to provide the seal.
The Staphylococcus aureus genome encodes three ferric uptake repressor (Fur) homologues: Fur, PerR, and Zur. To determine the exact role of Fur in S. aureus, we inactivated thefur gene by allelic replacement using a tetracycline resistance cassette, creating strain MJH010 (fur). The mutant had a growth defect in rich medium, and this defect was exacerbated in metal-depleted CL medium. This growth defect was partially suppressed by manganous ion, a metal ion with known antioxidant properties. This suggests that the fur mutation leads to an oxidative stress condition. Indeed, MJH010 (fur) has reduced levels of catalase activity resulting from decreased katA transcription. Using akatA-lacZ fusion we have determined that Fur functions, either directly or indirectly, as an iron-dependent positive regulator of katA expression. Transcription of katA is coregulated by Fur and PerR, since in MJH010 (fur) transcription was still repressed by manganese while transcription in MJH201 (fur perR) was ...

The global Rotary Seals Market is expected to reach USD 5.87 Billion by 2026, according to a new report by Reports and Data. This can be mainly associated with the increasing demand of high quality, reliable and durable mechanical seals.. Mechanical seals are used for joining mechanisms or systems together to avoid leakages, or excluding contamination by dust and dirt. The efficiency of the seal depends on compression in the case of gaskets and adhesion in the case of sealants.. The use of superior quality raw material will be one of the key trends that will gain traction in the rotary seals market during the next few years. Mechanical seals manufactured in modern times are specifically designed to endure harsh environmental conditions and temperatures, owing to this kind of development in the seals market, there is demand for the use of superior quality raw materials, for example, high-grade steel alloys, which can endure high temperatures. These developments are compelling the manufacturers to ...

In terms of value, the single seals segment is projected to account for the larger share during the forecast period. Based on type, the oil & gas processing seals market has been segmented into single and double seals. In terms of value, the single seal is projected to be the larger segment during the forecast period. The growth of this segment is mainly attributed to its cost savings characteristics; furthermore, single seals tend to release vapor from high-pressure side to low-pressure side, and are generally used where pumped product poses little or no hazard to the environment. The above-mentioned factors will drive the market during the forecast period.. Downstream application is estimated to account for the largest share of the oil & gas processing seals market in 2018, in terms of value. Downstream is estimated to be the fastest-growing application of oil & ...
A method of manufacture for an end effector assembly is provided. The method includes providing a pair of jaw members. A step of the method includes forming one or more seal plates positionable on one of the pair of jaw members. Etching a dam along a side of the one or more seal plates is a step of the method, wherein the etched dam inhibits the flow of a plastic on the one or more seal plate such that a height of the plastic with respect to the at least one seal plate during an overmolding process may be controlled. The method includes positioning the one or more seal plates on the one of the pair of jaw members; and overmolding the seal plate to one or more of the pair of jaw members.
