lid(s), plastic storage containers.. 2. Prepare your choice of freah fruit into bite size pieces and place into the large mixing bowl. I always use apples (with skin on)as my base fruit, since they are available year around and add a crunchiness to the mixture.. 3. Pour into the large mixing bowl, 2-3, 16 oz. cans of fruit (with liquid) depending on the volume of fresh fruit you have used. Less fresh fruit more canned fruit; more fresh fruit less cannned fruit. The canned fruit is meant as supplements and sweetners to the fresh fruit. One or more of the canned fruit should be in a syrup, vs. water or natural juice, depending on level of sweetness you desire. 4. Add your fruit seasoning of choice. I prefer caribbean calypso seasoning and lime peel. The juice from the canned fruit will rehydrate the your fruit peel of choice. I also add mint leaves (chopped fresh or dehydrated), a couple splashes of key lime (sweeter than the more common persian lime)juice, and some splahes of triple sec (orange ...

Dried fruit, including raisins, prunes and dried figs, are extremely popular products rich in antioxidants. From nutritionists point of view, dried fruits are similar to their fresh doubles. Still, there some key differences between both products.. Due to the fact that dried fruit contains less water than the fresh one, serving size portion is significantly smaller. According New York Times, half a glass of dried fruit is nearly equal to the one glass of fresh fruit.. The degree of the heat wherein the process of drying the fruit is carried out can destroy some of the nutrients and antioxidants. Therefore, dried fruit has lower levels of vitamin C than fresh fruit.. Some companies which are producing dried fruit add refined sweeteners, such as high fructose syrup or sucrose. This increases the calorie intake and glychemical index of some dried fruit. For instance, 100 gr. raisins contain 290 calories, compared to 69 calories for 100 gr. fresh fruit.. ...
Water relations of tomato fruit and the epidermal and pericarp activities of the putative cell wall loosening and tightening enzymes Xyloglucan endotransglycosylase (XET) and peroxidase were investigated, to determine whether tomato fruit growth is principally regulated in the epidermis or pericarp. Analysis of the fruit water relations and observation of the pattern of expansion of tomato fruit slices in vitro, has shown that the pericarp exerts tissue pressure on the epidermis in tomato fruit, suggesting that the rate of growth of tomato fruit is determined by the physical properties of the epidermal cell walls. The epidermal activities of XET and peroxidase were assayed throughout fruit development. Temporal changes in these enzyme activities were found to correspond well with putative cell wall loosening and stiffening during fruit development. XET activity was found to be proportional to the relative expansion rate of the fruit until growth ceased, and a peroxidase activity weakly bound to ...
Efficient seed dispersal in flowering plants is enabled by the development of fruits, which can be either dehiscent or indehiscent. Dehiscent fruits open at maturity to shatter the seeds, while indehiscent fruits do not open and the seeds are dispersed in various ways. The diversity in fruit morphology and seed shattering mechanisms is enormous within the flowering plants. How these different fruit types develop and which molecular networks are driving fruit diversification is still largely unknown, despite progress in eudicot model species. The orchid family, known for its astonishing floral diversity, displays a huge variation in fruit dehiscence types, which have been poorly investigated. We undertook a combined approach to understand fruit morphology and dehiscence in different orchid species to get more insight into the molecular network that underlies orchid fruit development. We describe fruit development in detail for the epiphytic orchid species Erycina pusilla and compare it to two terrestrial

A method was developed and optimized for the accelerated ripening of date fruits of cultivar Mazafati to prevent diseases and decay. The date fruits were incubated in hot acetic acid solution 0.5% at 40. +. 1. °C for 72. h. During the process some physicochemical changes in the fruits were studied and were found to be comparable with the changes in the fruits that naturally ripened on the tree. Fruit firmness, water insoluble solid (WIS), protein, pH, L*. a*. b* and E decreased during accelerated ripening whereas in control samples at 4. °C increased. Total solid (TS), total soluble solid (TSS) and acidity were slightly higher in treated fruits compared to control fruits. The greatest loss of fruit firmness occurred during the first 12. h of incubation. Organoleptic tests also showed little difference between the naturally ripened fruits on trees and accelerated ripened fruits in hot acetic acid. Overall there was no difference between the fruits and were readily acceptable to consumers. © ...

Fruit bowls are beautiful pieces of kitchenware that increase the decorative quotient of the table setting. Wooden fruit bowls are, usually, large in size so that a large number of fruits can be chopped, dressed as well as served in them. These fruit bowls are shaped like different types of fruits, like mango, apple and so on. However, the usual semi-circular shape is not uncommon to find. The edges of such bowls may have a curved or a straight contour. Wooden fruit bowls have a plain surface without intricate carvings on them. They may come as a set along with a wooden spatula to mix the fruit salad. Wooden fruit bowls can be divided into those for dry fruits and those for fresh fruits. The fruit bowls used to serve dry fruits have separate compartments in them, in order to serve a number of dry fruits at the same time. The size of the bowl and the quality of wood used to make these bowls determine their price.. Following are the potential manufacturers, suppliers and exporters of wooden fruit ...

This is where folk wisdom comes in. Traditional farmers use old newspapers and notebooks to wrap developing fruits before they are attacked by fruit flies. Plastic is discouraged because it is hot under the sun and trapped moisture favors fungal and bacterial infection. All you need is to lower the trellis, or avail of a ladder for fruit trees, and patiently wrap the fruits individually. Premium mango fruits are produced this way - they are not only free from fruit flies; they are unblemished and bright yellow. Ampalaya fruits are straight and full and less bitter, their color pale green which is preferred by many housewives. Patola are likewise protected by wrapping. So with upo. Watermelon is difficult to wrap so that farmers resort to covering the growing fruit with rice hay (dayami), often digging a hole under the fruit to keep it cool under the summer sun. Combat fruits flies as your mango tree blooms and your cucurbits flower simply with old newspaper and a stapler at hand, and you will ...

Knowing the difference between the two big families of fruits will help appropriately juice up your summer fruit salads. The two families of fruits ripen - or, more simply, sweeten - differently.. What are called climacteric fruits can ripen even when separated from their parent plant; they contain enough starch inside themselves to change over time into sugar. Examples are apples, bananas, plums and peaches. (For this reason, climacteric fruits often are picked and shipped when under-ripe because theyre not easily damaged in transit.). Non-climacteric fruits must obtain all their sugar from the parent plant and consequently ought to be bought only when fully ripe. Examples include most berries and citrus fruits, as well as pineapples and grapes.. The cooking process of maceration (from a Latin word that means to soften) draws out moisture from fruit through the addition of sugar to cut fruit. If fruits are nonclimacteric (and not picked under-ripe), theyre already pretty juicy. ...

Another problem is related to the production of freshly squeezed natural fruit juice without the addition of sugar or water in relation to reconstituted fruit juices obtained from fruit concentrates by water dilution. This problem is especially present in the production of fruit juices produced from citrus fruits. The problem which is related to the production of freshly squeezed natural fruit juices from citrus is particularly associated with the fact that citrus fruits are grown at locations close to the Equator. The biggest challenges are related to transport conditions because the transport of freshly squeezed natural fruit juices from these locations to Europe and to other locations in the world is a major problem due to spoilage of goods. That is why concentration is carried out and in this way, it reduces the possibility of spoilage during the long-term transport of fruit juices. These concentrates are then again diluted with water when they arrive at the location of production and ...
Sugars in whole fruits are incorporated into the fruit, which means the digestive system first needs to physically decompose the fruit and then extract and absorb sugars, which takes some time. In fruit juices, sugars are free, so they are absorbed quicker than from whole fruits, which results in higher blood glucose levels, which is a risk factor for diabetes type 2 (Defeatdiabetes, Diabetes.co.uk).. Also, fruit juices are liquid, so they pass through the stomach quicker than whole fruits, so they fill the stomach for a shorter time and may be therefore less satiating. This can make you drink more juice than you intended, which can result in unwanted weight gain.. If you eat foods high in fiber along with juice, the fiber will slow down the absorption of sugars from the juice (Nutrients). If you eat foods that contain mainly plain starch (white bread, cookies or rice, or potatoes) along with juice, the starch will be quickly digested and absorbed as glucose and will raise the blood glucose ...

Candied fruit, also known as crystallized fruit or glacé fruit, has existed since the 14th century. Whole fruit, smaller pieces of fruit, or pieces of peel, are placed in heated sugar syrup, which absorbs the moisture from within the fruit and eventually preserves it. Depending on size and type of fruit, this process of preservation can take from several days to several months.[1] This process allows the fruit to retain its quality for a year.[2] The continual process of drenching the fruit in syrup causes the fruit to become saturated with sugar, preventing the growth of spoilage microorganisms due to the unfavourable osmotic pressure this creates.[3] Fruits that are commonly candied include dates, cherries, pineapple, and a root, ginger.[4] The principal candied peels are orange and citron; these with candied lemon peel are the usual ingredients of mixed chopped peel (which may also include glacé cherries). Recipes vary from region to region, but the general principle is to boil the fruit, ...
An aggregate fruit or etaerio (/ɛˈtɪərioʊ/)[1] is a fruit that develops from the merger of several ovaries that were separate in a single flower.[2] In contrast, a simple fruit develops from one ovary. In languages other than English, the meanings of aggregate and multiple fruit are reversed, so that aggregate fruits merge several flowers.[3] The differences in meaning are due to a reversal in the terminology by John Lindley, which has been followed by most English-language authors.[3][4]. Not all flowers with multiple ovaries form aggregate fruit; the ovaries of some flowers do not become tightly joined together to make a larger fruit. Aggregate fruits may also be accessory fruits, in which parts of the flower other than the ovary become fleshy and form part of the fruit. The individual parts of an aggregate fruit come in many forms. Common examples are: ...
Dry fruits are added in many of the recipes like cakes, milkshakes, puddings, granola, pies, snacks, etc. They are extremely useful for maintaining good health and are also helpful to keep away many diseases. What is a dry fruit? It is actually a fruit in which almost all of the water content is removed using various drying methods. During the drying process, the fruit shrinks leaving a small and energy-filled dried fruit. Dates, figs, apricots, raisins are some common types of dry fruits. The other variety of dried fruit include mangoes, bananas, gooseberry, apples, cranberries, etc. Dry fruits are also available in the sugar-coated form.. The dry fruits and nuts are rich in carbs, antioxidants, vitamins, fiber, and potassium. They are the power house of nutrition and are a natural and healthy alternative to sugary treats. They are beneficial to your body and provide you with the necessary nutritional requirement that your body needs. But one has to have some limits on the intake of dry fruits ...
FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH. If you eat fruits on empty stomach, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.. FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Lets say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so due to the bread taken before the fruit. In the meantime the whole meal of bread & fruit rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil. So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals !. You have heard people complaining ...
Although the mechanism of light regulation of color pigmentation of apple fruit is not fully understood, it has been shown that light can regulate expression of genes in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway by inducing transcription factors (TFs). Moreover, expression of genes encoding enzymes involved in this pathway may be coordinately regulated by multiple TFs. In this study, fruits on trees of apple cv. Red Delicious were covered with piper bags during early stages of fruit development and then removed prior to maturation to analyze the transcriptome in the exocarp of apple, fruit. Comparisons of gene expression profiles of fruit covered with paper bags (dark-grown treatment) and those subjected to 14 h light treatment, following removal of paper bags, were investigated using an apple microarray of 40,000 sequences. Expression profiles were investigated over three time points, at one week intervals, during fruit development. Overall, 736 genes with expression values greater than two-fold were ...

In 2001 and 2002, we imposed a wide range of croploads (0-15 fruits/cm2 of TCA) on 4- and 5-year-old Honeycrisp/M.9 trees by manual hand thinning soon after bloom to define appropriate croploads that give adequate repeat bloom and also the best fruit quality. At harvest each year we evaluated fruit ripening and quality. Samples were stored for 5 months in air at 38 °F and 33 °F and evaluated for fruit firmness and storage disorders. Cropload was negatively correlated with tree growth, return bloom, fruit size, fruit red color, fruit sugar content, fruit starch content, fruit firmness, fruit acidity, fruit bitter pit, fruit senescent breakdown, fruit rot and fruit superficial scald, but was positively correlated with leaf blotch symptoms, fruit internal ethylene concentration at harvest, and fruit soggy breakdown. There was a strong effect of cropload on fruit size up to a cropload 7, beyond which there was only a small additional effect. Although there was considerable variation in return ...
This study presents key findings on pomegranate (Ruby) fruit growth pattern as well as the evolution of biochemical component and antioxidant capacity during fruit maturation over two seasons. The time course and pattern of fruit growth between 54 and 139 days after full bloom (DAFB) was studied. At five distinct developmental stages, total soluble solids (TSS), pH, titratable acidity (TA), phenolic contents and antioxidant capacity were investigated. Regression analysis was used for prediction of fruit growth while Pearson correlation was used to visualize the changes in major chemical indices and assess the inter-relationships amongst them. Fruit lineal dimensions (length and diameter) and weight showed a linear growth pattern in both seasons. Furthermore, there were significant increases in total soluble solids (TSS), with concomitant significant decline in titratable acidity (TA) with advancing maturity. Fruit at advanced maturity stages showed intense pigmentation of peel and aril, due to ...
Kelloggs created Fruit Winders in the UK, which is similar to the American Fruit by the Foot by General Mills, only in fewer flavors. Unlike Fruit by the Foot, Fruit Winders contain no artificial colorings and each flavor is made with real purée derived from the fruit it represents (e.g. the strawberry flavour contains real strawberry purée). Fruit Winders were introduced in the UK and Ireland in 2001 under the Kelloggs brand. The product was first called Real Fruit Winders, which was later changed to Screamin Fruit Winders before being changed finally to Kelloggs Fruit Winders. When the product first came out, the flavors were Orange, Strawberry and Blackcurrant, with Apple introduced shortly after. Later, a public call-in contest was held where people would vote for a new Fruit Winders flavor. The choices were Tropical, Raspberry and Lemon. The winning flavor was Tropical, but Raspberry and Lemon were introduced later on afterwards. In 2006, Fruit Winders discontinued the Orange, ...

There are a number of home recipes for fruit salad that contain different kinds of fruit, or that use a different kind of sauce other than the fruits own juice or syrup. Common ingredients used in fruit salads include strawberries, pineapple, honeydew, watermelon,[1] grapes, and kiwifruit.[2][3] Various recipes may call for the addition of nuts, fruit juices, certain vegetables, yogurt, or other ingredients. One variation is a Waldorf-style fruit salad, which uses a mayonnaise-based sauce. Other recipes use sour cream (such as in ambrosia), yogurt or even mustard as the primary sauce ingredient. A variation on fruit salad uses whipped cream mixed in with many varieties of fruits (usually a mixture of berries), and also often include miniature marshmallows. Rojak, a Malaysian fruit salad, uses a spicy sauce with peanuts and shrimp paste. In the Philippines, fruit salads are popular party and holiday fare, usually made with buko, or young coconut, and condensed milk in addition to other canned or ...

Tomato fruit (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., cv. Castelmart) were harvested at various degrees of ripeness and exposed to ethanol vapor at 0, 2, or 4, ml·kg-1 in a 20-liter jar for 0, 2, 4, or 6 hours at 20C. Ripening was measured as changes in subjective color and in firmness and production of CO2 and ethylene. The soluble solids concentration (percent), titratable acidity (percent), and pH were measured at the end of the storage period when the fruit were red-ripe. Ethanols inhibition of ripening was not confined to mature-green fruit, but also inhibited reddening of breaker, turning, and pink fruits. Storage of mature-green fruit at 20, 15, or 12C after treatment with 0 or 2 ml ethanol/kg at 20C prolonged the delay in ripening for 5, 6, and 7 days, respectively, compared with controls. There was no reduction in the quality of these fruit when they were red-ripe, even though there was an 11-day difference between the time the 20C control and the 12C-treated fruit became red-ripe. An informal ...

Nondestructive methods such as near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) are increasingly used in sorting lines to assess quality traits of unripe fruit, i.e. dry matter (DM) and total soluble solid (TSS) contents, in order to create homogenous batches of fruit. The use of this approach is based on the assumption that fruit quality traits at harvest are reliable indicators of their post-harvest behavior and their quality after ripening. The present study tested this assumption by analyzing the relationships between quality traits at harvest and after ripening. In parallel, models were developed to determine the capacity of NIRS measurements on unripe fruit at harvest to predict their shelf life and quality after ripening. I realize its the middle of summer and just about every fruit worth eating is in season. Peaches are perfectly ripe and berries are bursting with flavor.. When I hear what people eat, I often hear how much fruit people eat and personally it scares me. Yes, fruit is a better alternative to a candy bar or ice cream, but if you are trying to lower blood sugars or trying to lose weight or even just trying to be healthier, you need to put a limit on how much fruit you eat.. A very wise person told me fruits are cleansers and vegetables are healers, so please eat twice as many vegetables as you do fruits. Also, since fruits are cleansers and go through the body quickly, it is best not to eat it when you are eating grains and/or proteins. It turns out it alters the pH and enzyme environment of the stomach, making digesting a large amount of protein and grains quite difficult. For those with fructose malabsorption or sensitivity, that digestive upset can be quite uncomfortable! That may explain why ...
Phenolic compounds are known to have biological activity with beneficial effects on human health. Fruit of cultivated tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) are a major source of phenolics in the U.S. diet because this crop is the second most consumed vegetable per capita, but actual levels are low compared to other fruits and vegetables. Anthocyanins are an important class of phenolic phytonutrients known for their antioxidant properties and color. Tomato fruits do not normally posses anthocyanins, but we have developed lines which express substantial quantities in the fruit. We wished to quantify levels of total phenolics and anthocyanins in anthocyanin expressing tomato fruit in different production systems and compare to that of normal tomatoes. Epidermis and pericarp tissue of three advanced breeding lines of anthocyanin-fruit tomatoes and three lines of nonanthocyanin-fruit tomatoes, both grown in organically and conventionally managed systems, were assayed for total phenolics and total ...
The statement cautions that, because fruit juice contains large amounts of carbohydrate, it can lead to diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, and flatulence if consumed in large quantities.. Water is the predominant component of fruit juice. Carbohydrates, including sucrose, fructose, glucose, and sorbitol, are the next most prevalent nutrient in juice.. In appropriate amounts, the AAP acknowledges that 100% fruit juice can be a healthy part of a childs diet.. More recently, the AAP has added the recommendation that for children older than six months, fruit juice offers no nutritional benefits over whole fruit. Whole fruits also provide fiber and other nutrients. Infants should not be given fruit juice at bedtime, nor as a treatment of dehydration or management of diarrhea.[2]. References. ...

Diets low in fruit and vegetables are reportedly responsible for 2.7 million deaths annually from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and certain cancers. A daily fruit and vegetable intake of five 80 g portions is recommended for chronic disease prevention. However, in the UK, average adult consumption is less than three portions. It is suggested that fruit juice should only count as one portion. However, fruit juices are a beneficial source of phytochemicals. The preliminary results of two randomized, controlled, crossover, dietary intervention studies investigating the effects of chronic and acute consumption of fruit and vegetable puree and juice based drinks (FVPJ) on bioavailability, antioxidant status, vascular reactivity, and risk factors for CVD are reported. In the first study, 39 volunteers consumed 200 ml FVPJ, or fruit-flavoured control, daily for six weeks. In the second study, 24 volunteers consumed 400 mL FVPJ, or sugar-matched control, on the morning of the study day. Blood and urine ...
Eating whole fruits can reduce peoples risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a new study from researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health-but juicing them can send their risk factors soaring.. Led by Dr. Isao Muraki from the Harvard School of Public Healths Department of Nutrition, the meta-analysis looked at research gathered through several different studies between 1984 and 2008, and found that during the 25-year period, those who ate at least two servings each week of certain whole fruits - particularly blueberries, grapes, and apples - reduced their risk for type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 percent compared to those who ate less fruit.. The study, which included 3,464,641 participants-12,198 of whom developed type 2 diabetes-also found that those who consumed one or more servings of fruit juice each day increased their risk of developing diabetes by as much as 21 percent. Trading at least three of those juice servings for whole fruits reduced that risk by about 7 ...

Abstract: Prunus domestica L. is the most important fruit crop in the Europe and the most important within the genus Prunus. Serbia is the third world producer, after USA and China, of that friut. The seven F1 plum genotypes (Prunus domestica L.) which originated from three cross-combinations (Č ačanska Lepotica × Stanley, Č ačanska Najbolja × Stanley, Stanley × Stanley) and these cultivars as controls were planted in the experimental orchard in Prislonica, near Cacak, in spring 2000. In 2005-2007 several biological (blooming period, harvest date and yield) and main fruit quality traits were evaluated. Considerable variation was observed among the F1 genotypes, i.e. cross-combinations. All genotypes begun blooming later than their parents. The earliest harvest date was observed in P4 and the latest in P7. The highest yield was observed in P5. The genotype P4 had better values for some fruit quality traits (fruit weight, fruit rate, flash rate, fruit height, suture ...

The final contents of primary and secondary metabolites of the ripe fruit depend on metabolic processes that are tightly regulated during fruit ontogeny. Carbohydrate supply during fruit development is known to influence these processes but, with respect to secondary metabolites, we do not really know whether this influence is direct or indirect. Here, we hypothesized that the sensitivity of clementine fruit metabolism to carbohydrate supply was conditional on fruit developmental stage. We applied treatments increasing fruit load reversibly or irreversibly at three key stages of clementine (Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan.) fruit development: early after cell division, at the onset of fruit coloration (color break) and near maturity. The highest fruit load obtained by early defoliation (irreversible) had the highest impact on fruit growth, maturity and metabolism, followed by the highest fruit load obtained by early shading (reversible). Final fruit size decreased by 21 and 18% in these early ...
Fruit growth in apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) is mediated by cell production and expansion. Genes involved in regulating these processes and thereby fruit growth, are not well characterized. We hypothesized that the apple homolog(s) of AINTEGUMENTA (ANT), an APETALA2-repeat containing transcription factor, regulates cell production during fruit growth in apple. Two ANT genes, MdANT1 and MdANT2, were isolated from apple and their expression was studied during multiple stages of fruit development. MdANT1 and MdANT2 expression was high during early fruit growth coincident with the period of cell production, rapidly declined during exit from cell production, and remained low during the rest of fruit development. The effects of increase in carbohydrate availability during fruit growth were characterized. Increase in carbohydrate availability enhanced fruit growth largely through an increase in cell production. Expression of MdANT1 and MdANT2 increased sharply by up to around 5-fold in response to an
First purchases of fruit are mainly dependent on aspects of appearance such as color. However, repeat buys of fruit are determined by internal quality traits such as flavor-related volatiles. Differences in volatile profiles in white- and red-fleshed peach fruit are not well understood. In the present study, peach cultivars with white- and red-fleshed fruit were subjected to sensory analysis using electronic nose (e-nose) to evaluate overview volatile profiles. Approximately 97.3% of the total variation in peach color-volatiles was explained by the first principle component 1 (PC1) and PC2. After analyzing sensory differences between peach fruit samples, 50 volatile compounds were characterized based on GC-MS. Multivariate analysis such as partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was applied to identify volatile compounds that contribute to difference in white- and red-fleshed peach fruit cultivars. A total of 18 volatiles that could separate peach fruit cultivars with different colors in
Macadamia is a mass-flowering subtropical rainforest tree that is widely cultivated for its edible kernels. Macadamia flowers are borne on pendant racemes of 100 − 300 flowers but typically less than 2% of the flowers produce mature fruits and kernels. This study investigated the use of plant growth regulators to reduce abscission of flowers and immature fruit and to increase final fruit set of Macadamia. Pre-anthesis applications of the cytokinin, benzyladenine at 200 mg/L, increased initial fruit sets (2 weeks after anthesis) across four experiments from 8 − 17% (for control racemes) to 27 − 61% (for treated racemes). Post-anthesis applications of benzyladenine increased fruit retention up to 8 weeks after anthesis, but no treatment increased fruit retention beyond the final phase of immature fruit drop at 10 weeks post-anthesis. Benzyladenine delayed abscission of immature Macadamia fruit but it had no effect on final fruit set, nut-in-shell weight or kernel weight.; ;
Bitter melon is a cucurbit vine native to Asia with eastern India and southern China proposed as the centers of domestication (Yang and Walters 1992). It is now widely cultivated throughout the world for the immature fruits, and sometimes for the tender leafy shoots or the ripe fruits. Other species used for their immature fruits in a similar way are M. cochinchinensis and M. dioica. The immature fruits are stuffed, pickled, and sliced into various dishes. The immature fruits, called bitter melon, bitter gourd, or balsam pear, are harvested at developmental stages up to seed hardening; the fruits are warty in appearance and vary in size from 12 to 30 cm long. The bitter melon vine is a rapidly growing monoecious herbaceous vine (Fig. 1) which needs to be trellised. Bitter melon is best adapted to hot to moderate climates and grows well in a variety of soils. Flowering begins about 1 month after seed planting. A fruit fly (Strumetia cucurbitae) attacks the fruit in some production areas, and the ...

Hass avocado fruit changes skin colour from green to purple and then black during ripening. However, markets importing South African avocado fruit have been complaining about the Hass skin colour not changing to purple/black during ripening. Thus, the study aimed to investigate the effect of tree girdling, harvest time and ripening temperature on Hass avocado fruit skin colour development during ripening. The mature Hass avocado fruit were harvested from girdled and non-girdled trees during early (April), mid- (May) and late (June) harvest times. Upon arrival, in the laboratory fruit were cold stored at 5.5°C for 28 days. After storage, fruit were ripened at 25, 21 and 16°C for 8, 6 and 4 days, respectively. After withdrawal from clod storage fruit were evaluated for skin colour development, ripening and physiological disorders (chilling injury). Fruit from girdled trees showed high maturity (low moisture content) when compared with fruit from non-girdled trees during early and ...
In botany, a fruit is a plant structure that contains the plants seeds. To a botanist, the word fruit is used only if it comes from the part of the flower which was an ovary.[1] It is an extra layer round the seeds, which may or may not be fleshy. However, even in the field of botany, there is no general agreement on how fruits should be classified. Many do have extra layers from other parts of the flower.[2] In general speech, and especially in cooking, fruits are a sweet product, and many botanical fruits are known as vegetables. This is how ordinary people use the words. On this page, we describe what botanists call a fruit. The fleshy part of a fruit is called the mesocarp. It is between the fruits skin (exocarp) and the seeds. The white part of an apple, for example, is the fleshy part of the apple. Usually, when we eat a fruit, we eat the fleshy part. ...

Since papaya is a typical climacteric fruit, exogenous ethylene (ETH) applications can induce premature and quicker ripening, while 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) slows down the ripening processes. Differential gene expression in ETH or 1-MCP-treated papaya fruits accounts for the ripening processes. To isolate the key ripening-related genes and better understand fruit ripening mechanisms, transcriptomes of ETH or 1-MCP-treated, and non-treated (Control Group, CG) papaya fruits were sequenced using Illumina Hiseq2500. A total of 18,648 (1-MCP), 19,093 (CG), and 15,321 (ETH) genes were detected, with the genes detected in the ETH-treatment being the least. This suggests that ETH may inhibit the expression of some genes. Based on the differential gene expression (DGE) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment, 53 fruit ripening-related genes were selected: 20 cell wall-related genes, 18 chlorophyll and carotenoid metabolism-related genes, four proteinases and their inhibitors

We found that ∼1 in 3 6-year-old children consumed fruit less than once daily and ∼1 in 5 consumed vegetables less than once daily. After adjustment for several factors, children in our study who consumed fruits and vegetables less than once daily during late infancy had a 2.5 times higher odds of eating fruit, and 2.4 times higher odds of eating vegetables less than once daily at age 6 years. These findings highlight the importance of infant feeding guidance that encourages the intake of fruits and vegetables.. Our finding from a national cohort of infants that the infrequent intake of fruits and vegetables during infancy is associated with intake in childhood is consistent with 2 previous, yet smaller, studies.17,18 There are several possible explanations for these findings. Infants consuming fruits and vegetables more frequently during late infancy may have been offered fruits and vegetables more frequently, establishing a taste preference and familiarity for fruits and vegetables that ...
Dietary guidelines for pure fruit juice consumption differ between countries, regarding the question whether pure fruit juice is an acceptable alternative for fruit. Currently, little is known about pure fruit juice consumption and the risk of CVD. In this prospective cohort study, we studied the association of pure fruit juice and fruit consumption with the incidence of fatal and non-fatal CVD, CHD and stroke and investigated the differences in association with pure fruit juice consumption between low and high fruit consumers. A validated FFQ was used to estimate dietary intake of 34 560 participants (26·0 % men and 74·0 % women) aged 20-69 years from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition-Netherlands study. Adjusted hazard ratios (HR) were estimated using Cox regression after average follow-up of 14·6 years. Compared with no consumption, pure fruit juice consumption up to 7 glasses/week - but not consumption of ≥8 glasses - was significantly associated with ...

While some fruits and vegetables can easily lose flavor when frozen, others become sweeter when exposed to very low temperatures. Frozen fruits and vegetables makes you fit, boosts your antioxidant intake and saves you money. During the winter season in most countries, the produce and supply of fresh fruits and vegetables becomes limited hence most people will tend to consume frozen and canned fruits and veggies. According to researchers, canned food loses a lot of nutrients in the preservation process. On the contrary frozen vegetables are thought to be healthier than fresh produce sold in groceries and supermarkets. Once a vegetable or fruit has been plucked or picked from the farm, it starts to slowly lose nutrients and how long it takes for you to eat it after it has been plucked or picked, determines the nutritional value you are going to get from it. Freezing of fruits or vegetables helps retain their freshness at the same time locking the essential nutrients found in them. The following ...
Two essential functions in determining fruit quality are the transport and accumulation of water and dry matter to various fruit tissues. Since water and carbon are delivered to fruit tissues through a complex vasculature system, the internal fruit structure and pattern of vasculature may have a significant impact on their distribution within the fruit. The aim of this work is to provide methods for generating fruit structure that can be integrated with models of fruit function and used to investigate such effects. To this end, we have developed a modelling pipeline in the OpenAlea platform that involves two steps: (1) generating a 3D volumetric mesh representation of the entire fruit, and (2) generating a complex network of vasculature that is embedded within this mesh. To create the 3D volumetric mesh, we use reconstruction algorithms from the 3D mesh generation package of the Computational Geometry Algorithms Library. To generate the pattern of vasculature within this volumetric mesh, we use an
