Within these experiments series of 24 h tribological tests of sliding friction between examined surfaces on specially designed measuring stand were conducted. Subject of study in these tests were electrolytic copper plated steel samples, additionally covered with graphene and, as a reference, identically prepared samples without the graphene layer. As a result of these experiments characteristics of coefficient of friction and temperature between surfaces, as well as changes in mass and rough-ness before and after tests were obtained. Tribological behaviors of 316SS/bronze (BJP316), 420SS/bronze (BJP420) and WC/bronze (BJPWC) composites fabricated using binder jetting were evaluated systematically by using a scratch tester and dry reciprocating ball-on-disc tribometer under various loads. The results showed that the BJP316, BJP420 and BJPWC are mainly subjected to delamination, abrasion and spalling damages, respectively. The scratch resistance mainly depends on the soft bronze infiltrant. The friction coefficients in dry sliding all decrease with increasing loads, whereas the wear rates present different trends with loads. All composites exhibit comparable wear resistance to traditionally fabricated counterparts. The findings will help to improve the tribological design of mechanical elements fabricated by binder jetting and lay the foundation for the applications in the tribological field.
The main objective of this thesis work was to gain understanding of the layer properties and polymer structures that were able to aid lubrication in aqueous media. To this end, three types of polyelectrolytes: a diblock copolymer, a train-of-brushes and two brush-with-anchor mucins have been utilized. Their lubrication ability in the boundary lubrication regime has been examined by Atomic Force Microscopy with colloidal probe. The interfacial behavior of the thermoresponsive diblock copolymer, PIPOZ60-b-PAMPTAM17,on silica was studied in the temperature interval 25-50 ˚C. The main finding is that adsorption hysteresis, due to the presence of trapped states, is important when the adsorbed layers are in contact with a dilute polymer solution. The influence of surface defects, i.e., droplets and craters, on the mechanical and tribological properties of arc-evaporated VxN coatings deposited on cemented carbide has been investigated in a scratching contact using a diamond stylus and a sliding contact using a stainless steel pin. Post-test characterisation using 3D optical surface profilometry and scanning electron microscopy was performed in order to investigate the mechanical and tribological response of the coatings. The results show that scratch induced coating cracking mainly is restricted to larger droplets showing a low interfacial bonding to the adjacent coating matrix. The influence of coating defects on the cohesive strength, i.e., the tendency to chipping of small coating fragments, was found to be relatively small. In this work, dual implantation of Cr+ and N2+ ions on electroplated Ni substrates have been investigated for N2+ implantation energies of 140 keV, 100 keV and 60 keV. The implanted specimens have been analyzed by glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, nano-indentation, coefficient of friction, nano-wear and potentiodynamic corrosion curves. The properties of the dual implanted samples have been compared to Cr+ or N2+ implanted specimens. The microstructural and mechanical properties of the Ni plates depend on the penetration ranges of the Cr and N atomic profiles obtained after the implantation process. The increase of hardness reduced the coefficient of friction of the samples and the wear rates. Objectives: Falls are a leading cause of injury at work, and slipping is the predominant cause of falling. Prior research has suggested a modest correlation between objective measures (such as coefficient of friction, COF) and subjective measures of slipperiness (such as worker perceptions) in the workplace. However, the degree of association between subjective measures and the actual risk of slipping at the workplace is unknown. This study examined the association between perception of slipperiness and the risk of slipping. Methods: 475 workers from 36 limited-service restaurants participated in a 12-week prospective cohort study. At baseline, demographic information was collected, participants rated floor slipperiness in eight areas of the restaurant, and work environment factors, such as COF, were measured. Tsetse flies are the cyclical vectors of deadly human and animal trypanosomes in sub-Saharan Africa. Tsetse control is a key component for the integrated management of both plagues, but local eradication successes have been limited to less than 2% of the infested area. This is attributed to either resurgence of residual populations that were omitted from the eradication campaign or reinvasion from neighboring infested areas. Here we focused on Glossina palpalis gambiensis, a riverine tsetse species representing the main vector of trypanosomoses in West Africa. We mapped landscape resistance to tsetse genetic flow, hereafter referred to as friction, to identify natural barriers that isolate tsetse populations. To understand the NFC in graphite/mica heterojunctions annealed under dry nitrogen, we first consider several possible mechanisms reported in literatures. The adhesion-induced NFC is due to the lifting and wrinkling of top materials on substrates during tip retraction (14, 15) and thus only emerges in the unloading regime, which is not consistent with our results where NFC is observed both in loading and unloading processes. Meanwhile, pressure-induced flattening of potential energy surface corrugation can result in NFC for both loading and unloading processes according to theoretical predictions (8, 10, 26). However, the pressure needed to induce this effect is on the order of 100 GPa, which is three orders of magnitude higher than the maximum pressure of 0.75 GPa in our experiments (fig. S8). Based on a theoretical model and an experimental methodology for defining the friction torque for lubricated conditions in a modified thrust ball bearing having only three balls, the authors experimentally investigated the influence of the lubricant parameter Λ on friction torque for mixed IVR (isoviscous rigid) and EHL (elastohydrodynamic) lubrication conditions. The experiments were conducted using ball diameters of 3 mm, 3.97 mm and 6.35 mm loaded at 0.125 N, 0.400 N and 0.633 N. Two oils of viscosity 0.08 Pa·s and 0.05 Pa·s were used and rotational speed was varied in the range 60-210 rpm to obtain a lubricant parameter Λ varying between 0.3 and 3.2. The experiments confirmed that the measured friction torque can be explained using hydrodynamic rolling force relationships respecting the transition from an IVR to an EHL lubrication regime.

However, its roughness and high deposition temperature pose significant obstacles to these applications. We have successfully grown nanocrystalline diamond on steel at 400 °C by hot-filament chemical vapor deposition by employing a CrN interfacial layer.
