Alnus glutinosa, Fraxinus excelsior and Papaver rhoeas have long been used in folkloric medicine for the treatment of various ailments. As part of our continuing screening of plant extracts for activities, the extracts of A. glutinosa, F. excelsior and P. rhoeas have been screened for their antioxidant and antibacterial activities, as well as their general toxicity towards brine shrimps. Among the extracts, the methanol (MeOH) extract of F. excelsior displayed the highest level of antioxidant activity (RC50=1.35x10-2 mg/mL) and the dichloromethane (DCM) extract of P. rhoeas was the most toxic extract towards brine shrimps (LD50=2.4x10-2 mg/mL). The n-hexane and DCM extracts of F. excelsior and the MeOH extract of A. glutinosa were active (MIC values were within 1.25x10-1 and 1.00 mg/mL) against all 8 bacterial species tested, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
One of the largest of our native trees, Fraxinus excelsior (Ash) is an imposing tree in woodlands, valued for its timber which is strong and hard-wearing.
Excelsior High School, originally named Excelsior Union High School was founded in 1903 and located on Walnut Street in Norwalk, California.[1] The current campus was built in 1924. The campus sustained substantial damage to the administration building, auditorium, and other buildings in the 1933 Long Beach earthquake (as did the Norwalk Grammar School which occupied the former Excelsior Union High school building). Although the earthquake occurred after school hours, one student died when an internal wall in a portion of the boys gym failed. Its last graduating class was 1981. The Excelsior Union High School District was composed of a single school which supported a district including present day Norwalk, Cerritos, Artesia, and Bellflower. in 1919 Excelsior Union High School had seven teachers, and an enrollment of ninety-eight.[2] After World War II, the area rapidly changed from agricultural to residential and several new high schools were added to the district to absorb the large increase ...

The emerald ash borer has more effective dispersal than any invasive forest insect weve yet had to face, and attacks all of the ash species in our region (white, black, and green ash). And there is not yet strong evidence that any individuals of particular ash species have immunity. Unlike the hemlock wooly adelgid, whose northern range limit is currently restricted by cold winter temperatures, the climatic range of the ash borer includes all of northeastern North America. Dutch elm disease virtually eliminated American elm from its preferred habitat (forested swamps), but elms also occur as isolated trees in upland forests, and the beetle that spreads the disease isnt 100% successful at finding those isolated trees, so elms have persisted (at low numbers). But black ash is really only found in swamps, and given the dispersal ability of the emerald ash borer, the situation is bleak. There were extensive (and expensive) efforts to control and eradicate the insect when it was first discovered in ...

Emerald ash borer in Canada was first detected in 2002, in Windsor, Ontario. By 2005, it had spread into Essex and Lambton counties and the municipalities of Chatham-Kent and Dutton/Dunwich. In 2006, it was detected in London, Ontario; and in 2007, as far east as Toronto. The insect has continued to spread in that province since, with infestations appearing as far north as Sault Ste. Marie and as far east as Ottawa and Prescott-Russell and Leeds-Grenville counties. In 2013, the beetle was detected in Frontenac County, Simcoe County, Peterborough County, the District of Algoma, and Manitoulin Island.. The presence of emerald ash borer in Quebecs Montérégie area was confirmed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) in 2008. Infestation in Montreal and the Gatineau area were detected in 2011; Longueuil in 2012; and Terrebonne in 2013.. In 2014, CFIA consolidated the regulated areas within Ontario and Quebec into one larger regulated area.. All of these areas are regulated by federal ...

Background/Question/Methods. In 2014, Cipollini discovered that the ash-killing emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis, was capable of feeding and completing development on white fringetree, Chionanthus virginicus, a native North American tree that is used as an ornamental. Subsequent studies have revealed that this phenomenon is widespread and may be due to shared chemical characteristics of white fringetree with susceptible ash species. Given its ability to use white fringetree, we have been examining other close relatives for their susceptibility to emerald ash borer, with potentially important implications for the spread, impacts, and persistence of emerald ash borer in North America and beyond. In this study, we examined the susceptibility of cultivated olive, Olea europaea, to emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennisin a series of controlled laboratory tests. Cultivated olive is a Mediterranean native that is grown in the southeastern and western U.S. It will be contacted by emerald ash ...
The City is responsible for maintaining or removing City-owned ash trees (in City road allowances, municipal parks and natural areas, and on the City-portion of private lots). Trees will only be removed if they are highly infested with the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) or if they become structurally unstable.. Private property owners are responsible for removing and disposing of affected ash trees on their properties. It is recommended that the owner use a certified arborist and ensure full compliance with the ministerial order for wood movement and disposal.. Home owners are still able to put leaves and branches under four inches in diameter and four feet in length out for curbside leaf and yard waste collection even if they are from ash trees. Residents can continue to bring their own leaf and yard waste to the Trail Waste Facility for free if it meets the above requirements. A fee of $90/tonne will apply to contractors and residents bringing in material greater than four inches in diameter. ...
On July 23, 2008, USDA scientists discovered seven emerald ash borer beetles (Agrilus planipennis) in traps in Wayne County at a campground located at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Greenville Recreation Area near Wappapello Lake in southeast Missouri.. The emerald ash borer is an aggressive wood-boring insect that attacks and kills all species of ash (Fraxinus) trees. Attacks by this metallic-colored beetle of the Buprestidae family usually kill ash trees in one to three years. Although stressed trees are usually more prone to borer attack than healthy trees, evidence from Michigan suggests that even healthy, well-maintained ash trees are being attacked and killed by this beetle.. The natural range of the emerald ash borer is eastern Russia, northern China, Japan and Korea. It was first discovered in North America in Michigan in June 2002. The borer most likely traveled from Asia to North America in wooden packing materials. Because adult insects only move short distances on their own, the ...

USDA, FHTET-2005-16. p. 53-55. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: In 2003, the ARS Beneficial Insects Introduction Research Unit at Newark, DE, initiated studies on natural enemies of the Emerald Ash Borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), a new invasive species lethal to Ash trees (Fraxinus spp.). First discovered in Michigan in 2002, it probably was introduced into the U.S. at least five years earlier from Asia, its native origin. In 2003-2004, explorations for natural enemies of the pest were conducted in Japan, Korea, and Mongolia, but no suitable populations of the borer were found. Therefore, explorations in 2005-2006 will be conducted in China. In 2005, we started searching for natural enemies of native ...

Emerald ash borer (EAB) arrived at the Allegheny National Forest in Pennsylvania in 2012 and has rapidly been killing ash trees across the forest. Northern Research Station scientists, in partnership with State and Private Forestry, the Allegheny National Forest, and other partners, have been working on conserving white ash genetic diversity across the Allegheny. Using population genetic approaches, scientists determined that to optimize conservation of genetic diversity, insecticide application efforts should focus on treating many sites with at least 10 trees per site rather than treating many trees within a single site. The results also highlight how valuable it is to select the correct sites for treatment, with certain sites holding more genetic diversity than others. Performing genetic analyses before insecticide treatment and using that information to select sites with complementary genes can result in nearly a 30 percent cost savings. The results of this research will help forest managers ...
When should I consider treating my ash tree for EAB?Based on current research, EAB treatments are suggested only for ash trees located within 15 miles of a confirmed EAB site, or for trees located within a quarantined area. Insecticide treatments are not necessary for ash trees located outside of these areas. Even within the 15-mile radius, not all trees should be treated. Due to the expense of insecticide treatments for EAB, consider the value of a particular ash tree in relation to insecticide treatment costs before making any treatments. Proper use of EAB insecticides can help maintain the health of high value ash trees over time. Lower value ash trees are not ideal candidates for EAB insecticide treatments.. How do I know if my ash tree has value? Ash trees can be a valuable part of the landscape. A properly cared for ash tree can increase property value, provide environmental benefits such as runoff and erosion mitigation, and reduce electricity costs by shading a home. Determining tree ...
The emerald ash borer is a very destructive insect pest of ash trees, the only known hosts of this borer in the United States. EAB is a slender, elongate insect about 1/3 - 1/2 inch long. It is widest just behind the head, gradually tapering back to the abdomen. It is a bright iridescent green to copper-green color, often with a copper colored area behind the head. Its body underneath the wings is a purplish-magenta color.

Different research and extension networks will help execute the objectives. Research and technology transfer is facilitated by the coordinated structure of the group. For example, entomologists in NCERA-224 from the states with active emerald ash borer infestations used the NCERA-224 structure to coordinate research objectives and protocols in various states to evaluate insecticides for control of emerald ash borer. They were then well positioned to develop consensus recommendations for managing emerald ash borer, which were subsequently published in the highly cited multi-state NCR-IPM bulletin, Insecticide Options for Protecting Ash Trees from Emerald Ash Borer. More generally, members of NCERA-224 provide information, as appropriate, to clientele and stakeholders through face-to-face meetings, newsletters, CEU trainings, and professional society meetings such as annual meetings of the Entomological Society of America and American Phytopathological Society. Many of the same pests occur in ...
Background/Question/Methods. Ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) have suffered catastrophic losses (,99% mortality) due to the infestation of the emerald ash borer (EAB), an invasive wood-boring beetle. Ash trees are typically dominant in riparian forests and have been suggested to be a foundational species filling in after the loss of American elm to Dutch elm disease. Effects of ash mortality and the belowground microbial associations of ash are understudied despite the importance of soil microbial communities to soil ecological function and integrity. To characterize potential associations between ash trees and soil bacterial communities we sampled soils from 11.2m radius plots with (n=23) and without (n=9) ash trees across 7 forests in central Ohio. Tree species were censused and ash tree condition was gathered at each plot where 0-10cm soil cores were randomly sampled. DNA was extracted from soils and paired-end sequencing of 16S rRNA amplicons was conducted using Illumina MiSeq. Bacterial relative ...
Washington, D.C. (January 31, 2005) - Since its discovery near Detroit in 2002, the emerald ash borer has devastated ash tree populations in Michigan, Ohio and Ontario and has been sighted elsewhere.. Now Agricultural Research Service scientists, including those at the ARS Systematic Entomology Laboratory (SEL) in Washington, D.C., and Beltsville, Md., are working to precisely identify parasitic wasps that seem to be natural enemies of this imported metallic-green beetle, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire. Thought to have arrived here about six years ago, hidden in wooden packing material, the borer is threatening to become a major U.S. pest.. U.S. Forest Service and Michigan State University researchers found the potentially beneficial wasps in a study plot in Livonia, Mich., and sent them to the SEL for identification. There, entomologists Michael Gates and Michael Schauff identified them as species in the genus Balcha, which like to snack on emerald ash borer larvae, and in the genus Pediobius, ...
The emerald ash borer life cycle can occur over one or two years depending on the time of year of oviposition, the health of the tree, and temperature.[5]. After 400-500 accumulated degree-days above 10 °C (50 °F), adults begin to emerge from trees in late spring, and peak emergence occurs around 1000 degree-days. After emergence, adults feed for one week on ash leaves in the canopy before mating, but cause little defoliation in the process.[6] Males hover around trees, locate females by visual cues, and drop directly onto the female to mate; mating can last 50 minutes, and females may mate with multiple males over their lifespan.[7] A typical female can live around six weeks and lay approximately 40-70 eggs, but females that live longer can lay up to 200 eggs.[6]. Eggs are deposited between bark crevices, flakes, or cracks and hatch about two weeks later. Eggs are approximately 0.6 to 1.0 millimeter (0.02 to 0.04 in) in diameter, and are initially white, but later turn reddish-brown if ...
EAB only attacks ash trees. If your tree is not an ash tree, it will not be affected by EAB. Is your tree an ash tree? Look at its leaf. An ash tree leaf is compound, meaning that each leaf has multiple leaflets. Next, look at the branch structure. Ash trees have an opposite branch arrangement, meaning the branches come off the trunk or larger branch directly opposite from each other (not staggered). You can also look at the bark. On older ash trees, bark has a tight, diamond-shaped pattern. Younger trees have relatively smooth bark.. Use this University of MN Extension Ash Tree Identification Guide (PDF) to help you determine if your tree is an ash tree. ...
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say the larva of an invasive beetle has been found in Muscatine County. That brings the total of Iowa counties the Emerald Ash Borer has been confirmed in to 11.
Emerald ash borer (EAB) has been confirmed for the first time in Oneida County by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and the USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today.
Randolph - Less than a month after state officials first documented a devastating invasive beetle in Orange County, an intensive search has shown that emerald ash borer is present in two more Vermont counties.

Photo of adult EAB by Leah Bauer). Impact on Forest Biodiversity: Being aware of this type of destructive force is important because it can drastically affect the various ecosystems through which the Appalachian Trail passes. For example, when siting a new camping area one could note the abundance of Ash trees in the area. Though alive at the initial point of observation, with knowledge of the detrimental impacts of EAB, one could infer that many of those trees would likely become potential hazards and maintenance problems in as little as 2 years. The death of these Ash trees could also promote the growth of non-native plant species which may lead to increased maintenance resources being allocated to stop their spread. Research also suggests that increased light in the forest floor, resulting from canopy gaps created by dying ash trees, may facilitate the establishment and spread of invasive plants. Exotic species such as oriental bittersweet, honeysuckle, multiflora rose, and autumn olive ...
When Bloomingtons tree guy, Paul Edwardson, got a call earlier this month from the state warning him that the emerald ash borer had attacked trees 2 miles from the city border, he wasnt surprised.. Hed been waiting for the call for three years, ever since the insect was discovered in St. Paul.. We knew it wasnt a matter of if it would happen, it was just when, Edwardson said last week. You plan for the worst and hope for the best.. Bloomington and Richfield are now at the front lines of the destructive bugs advance into the metro area, with Edina not far behind. Two weeks ago, the state announced that the borer had been found in trees on the Fort Snelling golf course.. The emerald ash borer larvae tunnel under the bark of ash trees, destroying the tissues that move water and nutrients. Signs of emerald ash borer include a thinning canopy and woodpecker activity in trees. But often a tree has been infected for years before it is noticed.. With no natural enemies in this country, experts ...

Researchers at the Queen Mary University of London and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew have identified the genetic basis of resistance to ash dieback in UK trees. The researchers sequenced the DNA from over 1,250 ash trees to find inherited genes associated with ash dieback resistance.. The samples were collected from ash trees in a Forest Research mass screening trial, which comprises 150,000 trees planted across 14 sites in South East England. Many of the genes found to be associated with ash dieback resistance were similar to those previously shown to be involved in disease or pathogen responses in other species.. For more details, read the news article in Queen Mary University of London website.. ...

WAYNE COUNTY-Earlier this spring, Department of Conservation of Natural Resources (DCNR) service forester Timmothy Latz discovered evidence for the invasive Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) species of beetle on trees near Lake Henry. According to DCNR, the EAB species are roughly a half-inch long, metallic-green beetle that feeds under the bark of ash trees, eventually killing them. The species was first identified in North America in 2002 in Michigan, states DCNR. According to Latz, EABs

Ash dieback is a fungal disease (causal agent Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) infecting Common ash (Fraxinus excelsior) throughout temperate Europe. The disease was first discovered in the UK in 2012 in a nursery in Southern England, in plants which had been imported from the Netherlands. After sampling other recently planted sites across England, more infected trees were found. Tree trade from outside and across the UK may have facilitated the spread of invasive diseases which threaten the sustainability of forestry business, ecological niches and amenity landscapes. Detecting a disease in a nursery at an early stage and knowing how likely it is for the disease to have spread further in the plant trade network, can help control an epidemic. Here, we test two simple sampling rules that 1) inform monitoring strategies to detect a disease at an early stage, and 2) inform the decision of tracking forward the disease after its detection. We apply these expressions to the case of ash dieback in the UK and test them
Usually found on ash (Fraxinus excelsior), Inonotus hispidus can also be found colonising other hardwoods. Here we can see it on Sorbus.
In recent years, extensive mortality of ash (Fraxinus excelsior) has occurred, as a result of infection by the pathogen Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus. Here, at Forest Research, we are investigating the genetics and biology of the causal pathogen, but this task would be helped if we could compare it to other Hymenoscyphus sp. that occur on species other than ash ...

Green ribbons are turning up on ash trees in Minneapolis, a stark reminder of just how much of the public urban forest is about to be cleared away, either by city foresters or the emerald ash borer.. Between the two, nearly all of the 40,000 ash trees on boulevards and in parks will be removed over the next five to 10 years and replaced by other species, said Ralph Sievert, director of forestry for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, which is behind the campaign.. A ribbon doesnt indicate a tree is about to be cut down immediately. Individually, each ribbon provides directions to a park board website about the citys ash borer strategy. But in some parts of the city, nearly every tree on a block - or along several blocks - might get a ribbon, vividly illustrating the potential threat posed by the pest.. Sievert said the public information campaign is designed to raise awareness and explain the citys ash borer strategy, or at least provoke this response: "All these are ash? Holy cow!" he ...
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - An invasive beetle that destroys ash trees and hurts Pennsylvanias $25 billion hardwoods industry has been found in two more counties.. State agriculture officials announced Friday that emerald ash borers were identified in Mount Union, Huntingdon County, and Monroe Township, Wyoming County.. The tree-killing pest is now in 21 counties. The beetle, which is native to China and eastern Asia, can kill an ash tree within three years of the initial infestation.. Agriculture Secretary George Greig is urging the public not to transport firewood more than 50 miles from where it was purchased to help slow the borers spread.. Agriculture Department survey crews began hanging more than 2,000 traps from ash trees in eastern Pennsylvania in May to combat the problem. ...
Recent news of the discovery of the emerald ash borer in Franklin County and the hemlock woolly adelgid near Lake George crystallizes the threat that imported forest pests pose to the Adirondacks. The emerald ash borer, a small green beetle from Asia, is poised to wipe out all of the ash trees in the region - and potentially North America. ...
A contractor working on Maplewood Drive this week found an ash tree infected with the emerald ash borer, a small, green non-native species of beetle so destructive that it is expected to all but wipe out ash trees in the Northeast in as little as a decade. Because the ash borer has established itself in at least 26 states, officials say, eradication is no longer considered possible. When the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the inner layers of the tree bark, cutting off the trees circulatory system. Other signs of infestation include D-shaped holes on the bark, horizontal tracks on the inner surface of the bark and unusual numbers of holes drilled by woodpeckers, for which ash borers are a favorite food. Chris Martin, head of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protections forestry division, said the insect could be active for up to five years before anyone notices.
The name blue ash is derived from the black dye extracted from the trees inner bark through immersion in water. European colonists and American pioneers used this dye to color yarn for use in the production of textiles, sewing, crocheting, knitting, weaving, and embroidery. Blue Ash wood is used to make flooring, baseball bats, furniture, tool handles, crates and barrels.[4] The city of Blue Ash, Ohio, an inner suburb of Cincinnati, drew its name from the blue ash trees in the area, the logs of which were used to build many of the communitys earliest buildings.[5] North American native ash tree species are used by North American frogs as a critical food source, as the leaves that fall from the trees are particularly suitable for tadpoles to feed upon in ponds (both temporary and permanent), large puddles, and other water sources.[6] Species such as red maple, which are taking the place of ash, due to the ash borer, are much less suitable for the frogs as a food source-resulting in poor frog ...
Fraxinus americana is a deciduous Tree growing to 25 m (82ft) by 15 m (49ft) at a fast rate. It is hardy to zone (UK) 3 and is not frost tender. It is in flower from Apr to May, and the seeds ripen in September. The flowers are dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required) and are pollinated by Wind. The plant is not self-fertile. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very alkaline soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers dry or moist soil. The plant can tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure. It can tolerate atmospheric pollution.
by Damon Nazarenko , Oct 16, 2017 , Ecology, Green Issues, Health, Wood. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN for short) is a non-profit that identifies flora and fauna threatened with extinction. Theyre committed to conservation and to provide the world "with the most objective, scientifically-based information on the current status of globally threatened biodiversity.". The Emerald Ash Borer beetle arrived in Michigan from Asia in the late 1990s via infested shipping pallets. Without predators theyve spread rapidly. In their larval stage they bore a channel under the bark that girdles and kills the tree. Tens of millions of Ash trees in North America have died as a result. An entire Ash forest can be wiped out within six years of infection. The IUCN just classified five of the six most prominent Ash tree species in North America as "Critically Endangered." The sixth Ash specie is assessed as "Endangered." The only classification beyond "Critically ...
By most estimates, not a whole lot of good can come from a species of trees being almost entirely wiped out by a ravaging insect. The emerald ash borer, a beetle, did just that - the shiny green bugs have made their way across the United States since 2002, making their homes in ash trees and essentially suffocating them until they die. Yellow Springs was no stranger to the ash borer invasion, and aside from a few trees near Ellis Pond that have been treated against the borer, most ash trees in the village are dead.. The only upside to this morbid phenomenon was the preponderance of ash wood that became available as the dead trees were cut down before they could collapse. A local arborist named Bob Moore tried to make the most of this unfortunate situation. He founded the Heartwood Lumber Reclamation Project in 2012 and began collecting and milling the wood with the help of a number of locals interested in putting the wood to use.. Part of Moores goal with the project was to somehow use the wood ...
Increased globalization has facilitated the accidental spread of many invasive species. Wood-boring insects in particular are easily transported as their eggs and larvae may easily go unnoticed in lumber and shipping containers. The purpose of my work in Dr. Silks insect chemical ecology lab was to assist in the development of pheromone-based tools to monitor and control the spread of invasive insects in Canada. The use of pheromones to attract a target insect has the major advantage of being a species-specific non-toxic method for controlling an invasive species. Some of the organisms we studied include: (1) The emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis, which threatens ash trees across much of central and eastern Canada; and (2) The brown spruce longhorn beetle, Tetropium fuscum, which was introduced from infested shipping containers into the port of Halifax and poses a serious threat to the health of spruce forests in Atlantic Canada (Lemay et al 2010 ; Ryall et al 2010 ...
by Dr. Raymond Cloyd. We are receiving inquiries regarding the ash/lilac borer (Podosesia syringae). It is important to note that this is not the same insect pest as the Emerald ash borer (Agrilius planipennis). The Emerald ash borer is a wood-boring beetle whereas the ash/lilac is a wood-boring caterpillar. Ash/lilac borer adults are typically active from mid-to-late-April through early-May. The adults are brown, clearwing moths that resemble paper wasps. Peak moth activity usually occurs from May through June although this depends on temperature. Adult females lay tan-colored, oval-shaped eggs in cracks and crevices, or wounds at the base of plant stems. A single mated female may live about one week and lay up to 400 eggs. Below are the major biological and management parameters associated with this insect pest:. * Larvae cause plant damage by creating tunnels and feeding within the bark (cambium). The larvae may also bore further into the wood and feed within the sapwood and heartwood.. * ...
The emerald ash borer (EAB) is an introduced pest that is devastating our native ash trees. First discovered in Michigan less than a decade ago, it has killed tens of millions of trees so far in sixteen states. Many more trees are at risk if this invader is not contained.. While it is thought that the borer arrived in wooden packing materials brought in by ship or air, its spread within this country is usually the result of human activity. One important way the borer can be introduced to new areas is when people unwittingly move infested firewood to their property or to campgrounds, fishing spots, and parks as they enjoy these natural areas. Educating the public about how to prevent the spread of this beetle is vital to protecting ash trees from destruction. Educating youth about this problem has a double benefit. Kids learn what they can do and can then take those lessons home to spread the word to their families, friends, and neighbors. To help, the USDA has prepared educational materials ...
Details of the threat to UK ash trees from ash dieback caused by the Hymenoscyphus fraxineus fungus, formerly known as Chalara fraxinea.
The Emerald Ash Borer has devastated eastern forests and woodlands. We have a friend who manages his woodlot for timber, and has a small ancient sawmill. He has dropped several hundred ash trees and has them up off the ground.. We only dealt with the few ash trees within impact distance of our house, by hiring that friend and his buddy, who is a professional tree cutter. They used a pulley and a hand winch to force the trees to fall away from the house. I had wanted to use the trunks, ash is a great wood for everything you can use wood for, but that is when my shoulders gave it up. So they just laid there.. We have hickory hardwood floors, mostly, with a walnut border. But there are two boards that turned out to be oak, and one that was ash, from the lumber company. You couldnt tell because hickory is so very different from board to board until we were sanding and finishing.. An ash floor would be a thing of beauty, or a set of kitchen cabinets, but of course now that tree is effectively ...
A newly identified chemical sex attractant, or pheromone, of the emerald ash borer could mean improved traps for monitoring and controlling the tree-killing beetle. Thats the goal of US Department of Agriculture entomologist Allard Cosse and his colleagues.
Since EAB is very hard to detect in the early stages, it often goes unnoticed until its too late. For this reason, EAB has been difficult to control and manage. Prevention measures and early detection are the best defense against this devastating invasive forest insect.. ...
Types of Affiliate Marketing. Whats interesting about affiliate marketing is that you can earn commissions in more ways than most people think. Allow me to explain the 3 different types of affiliate marketing and how you can earn through them.. 1. Unattached Affiliate Marketing - This type of affiliate marketing will not require too much work from you, you dont even have to setup an affiliate marketing blog like those for Amazon Affiliate Programs. This is more like a PPC marketing (pay-per-click) where you just show affiliate ads on sites that allow this kind of marketing and then get a commission for each click through that web users make on the ads.. 2. Related Affiliate Marketing - This type of marketing is where you are required to have some level of involvement and this is where you create an affiliate marketing blog or website and always show affiliate links on almost all of your website/blog pages. You also earn a commission for each time a web user clicks through the affiliate ...

Dr Shikha Sharma. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an unforgettable word in 2020. World health organization has declared COVID-19 as pandemic and according to the Worldometer site, it has affected 212 countries and territories and has caused approximately 2.8 lakhs deaths so far. According to the various published scientific evidences COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by new coronavirus that can lead to lung dysfunction. There are 7 coronaviruses that are known to cause disease in humans and among these 3 can cause the severe respiratory infection. These are severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) identified in 2002 in China, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) identified in 2012 in Saudi Arabia and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus2 (SARS-CoV2) commonly called COVID-19 identified in late 2019 in Wuhan, China. SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and COVID-19 are closely related but COVID-19 spread more quickly than the other two. Over 8000 people from 29 ...
The diversity and abundance of Late Triassic scleractinian corals and carbonate microfacies were analyzed from the Wallowa terrane (southern Wallowa Mountains, Oregon) in order to determine regional and distant paleogeographic relationships during the Late Triassic time. Systematic identification of coral species and depositional environments between two formations in the Wallowa terrane (Summit Point Member of the Martin Bridge Formation and Excelsior Gulch of the Hurwal Formation) and one locality in the adjacent Olds Ferry terrane (Willow Spring of the “Upper†Huntington Formation) were used to analyze similarities between the Tethys realm (Northern Calcareous Alps) and the terranes of the North American Cordillera. The Jaccard and Dice Coefficients were used to determine similarities between the Summit Point Member, Excelsior Gulch conglomerate, and the Willow Spring conglomerate as well as previously studied terranes throughout the Late Triassic world. Results showed strong similarities

The ORC was created with funding from a five million dollar U.S. Department of Education First in the World grant received by Excelsior and several partner colleges to develop an open, online student assessment tool-the Diagnostic Assessment and Achievement of College Skills, or DAACS for short. The ORC provides free, online remediation for students who struggle with the reading assessment portion. According to a report by the American Institutes for Research, 77% of two-year college students and 63% of four-year college students are less than proficient in prose literacy. The ORC fills a major gap in the online learning community by offering much-needed reading support for this student population.. Developed by a team of content experts and experienced instructional designers from Excelsior College, SUNY Onondaga, SUNY Monroe, and the technology firm, Tec-Masters, the ORC offers three robust sections that break down the reading process into what to do before, during, and after reading. These ...

Now I am ready to choose an hypothesis with which to work. It is still my firm belief, due perhaps to my early training, that God created the universe as it is. There have been changes in the cosmos, in living creatures, etc., but I still believe that changes have been within the different "classes" themselves. For example, human beings were created as they are, although their physical and mental beings have changed through the ages! I know that this idea is a laughing stock among competent scholars, but in view of my past education, or lack of education, I can maintain no other theory. Let me hasten to say, however, that this view is not unsusceptible to further development. I am no longer a "seven day-er"! In declaring that God created the world, I am only acknowledging that my own mind is not capable of explaining it in any other way. How God created the world, I do not attempt to say; I am not able to understand that problem. I believe, however, that I should make an attempt to understand as ...

To the Editors:. The violent and illegal takeover of Excelsior, the foremost Mexican daily, by a small group of conservative employees (the paper is a cooperative), with the help and funding of the Mexican government, should be a matter of concern to all those committed to the cause of freedom of the press.. It is not only Mexico, though, that loses its only truly independent paper, but the whole of the Spanish-speaking world also loses its most respected and influential literary publication, Plural, published monthly by Excelsior and edited by Octavio Paz. Mr. Paz has already resigned in protest.. According to correspondents of both The New York Times and The Washington Post, President Luis Echeverría played a key role in those events not only for political reasons but also because of his personal stake in a new, expanding journalistic empire. Considering that President Echeverría is considered to be a candidate for Secretary General of the United Nations, this affair is only more ...

Confident that, not being an all-round man, I would present no pedestrian problems to Max in an essay, he had said that taking any sort of walk was uncongenial to him, for walking automatically stops all activity of the brain I checked in at the Excelsior in Rapallo, for the second time, in the summer of 1953. I was met at the station by Charlie, an English-speaking driver whom Turco, the hotels concierge, had assigned to me on my first visit. Charlie had once lived in Pittsburgh, and missed it acutely. The ravishing Ligurian coast did not console him in the least for whatever it was that he missed in Pittsburgh. Turco, whom I addressed as Il Presidente, because he was president of an association of concierges, greeted me at the Excelsior, and after I had had a telephone conversation with Miss Jungmann, Charlie drove me to the Villino down the hill to the promenade that skirts the sea, past the caf s and bandstands, and then up the steep hill of the Via Aurelia, to No. 47. The motor traffic on ...

The EAB specializes in feasting on ash (Fraxinus spp) trees. In its homeland, it is not considered a major problem since the ash species there apparently have built-in resistance. However North American ash trees do not have that resistance, and so are quite vulnerable. The adult EAB feeds on the leaves and are not all that destructive, but the larvae burrow under the bark, feeding on the woody material immediately under the bark. This is where the critical transfer of sap and nutrients to feed the tree takes place, and the larvaes burrowing and feeding action cuts off the flow. In fairly short order the upper part of the tree dies. The roots may still be alive and there may be some subsequent sucker growth of the tree, but it will likely never grow to a mature specimen ...
