Electrical Field Flow Fractionation (ElFFF) is a sub method in the field flow fractionation (FFF) family that relies on an applied voltage on the channel walls to effect a separation. ElFFF has fallen behind some of the other FFF methods because of the optimization complexity of its experimental parameters. To enable better optimization, a particle based model of the ElFFF systems has been developed and is presented in this work that allows the optimization of the main separation parameters, such as electric field magnitude, frequency, duty cycle, offset, flow rate and channel dimensions. The developed code allows visualization of individual particles inside the separation channel, generation of realistic fractograms, and observation of the effects of the various parameters on the behavior of the particle cloud. Micron-size polystyrene-based latex particles were separated by using new micro-thermal field-flow fractionation (micro-TFFF). The order of retention from the largest to the smallest particles that appears at high field strength and high flow rate corresponds to the focusing mechanism which itself is a consequence of the lift forces acting on the particles. The mechanism of steric exclusion can only be effective at low flow rates of the carrier liquid. Whenever high-speed separation was performed, the focusing effect clearly dominated the FFF mechanism. Liposomes are currently being investigated as potential parenterally used drug carriers. The main factor that influences the in vivo behavior of such liposomes is their vesicle size. A detailed and reliable knowledge of vesicle size is therefore necessary in order to interpret results of physical and biological investigations in a correct manner. It has earlier been discovered that it is feasible to determine the size distribution of vesicle dispersions in a reliable manner and it appears especially useful to employ the combination of SEC fractionation, PCS and the enzymatic PC quantitation. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentrations have been increasing in parts of the northern hemisphere for several decades. This process-brownification-often accompanies increasing iron and aluminum, but the metal-DOM interactions these concurrent trends imply are poorly described. Here we used field-flow fractionation with UV and ICP-MS detection to measure the size distribution of colloidal iron, aluminum, manganese, copper, uranium, and chromophoric DOM in six lakes over six months. Five of these lakes have browned to some degree in the past three decades, with linear increases in organic carbon and color ranging from 0.01 to 0.13 mg C L−1 yr−1 and 0.13-1.94 PtCo yr−1. Browning trends were more pronounced and colloids more abundant in lakes with wetlands in their catchments. Iron and aluminum were present in two primary fractions, sized nominally at 1 and 1000 kDa. A new approach is presented for preparative, continuous flow fractionation of sub-10-kbp DNA fragments, which exploits the variation in the field-dependent mobility of the DNA molecules based on their length. Orthogonally pulsed electric fields of significantly different magnitudes are applied to a microchip filled with a sieving matrix of 1.2% agarose gel. Using this method, we demonstrate a high-resolution separation of 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 kbp DNA fragments within 2 min. During the separation, DNA fragments are also purified from other ionic species. Preparative fractionation of sub-10-kbp DNA molecules plays an important role in second-generation sequencing. The presented device performs rapid high-resolution fractionation and it can be reliably manufactured with simple microfabrication procedures. The study aims to investigate numerically a two dimensional, steady, heat transfer over a cylinder in porous medium with suspending nanoparticles. Buongiorno model is adopted for nanofluid transport on free convection flow taking the slip mechanism of Brownian motion and thermophoresis into account. Boussinesq approximation is considered to account for buoyancy. The boundary layer conservation equations are transformed into dimensionless, and then elucidated using robust Keller-box implicit code numerically. The numerical results are displayed graphically and deliberated quantitatively for various values of thermo-physical parameters. The dielectrophoretic collection spectra of antibiotic-sensitive and antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis have been determined. These indicate that in the absence of antibiotic treatment there is a strong similarity between the dielectric properties of sensitive and resistant strains, and that there is a significant difference between the sensitive strains before and after treatment with the antibiotic streptomycin after 24 h exposure. Although bacterial culture remains the gold standard for detection of viable bacteria in environmental specimens, the typical time requirement of twenty-four hours can delay and even jeopardize appropriate determination. In addition, culture is incapable of detecting viable but not culturable (VBNC) species. Conversely, nucleic acid and antibody-based methods decrease time to detection but rarely characterize viability of the bacteria detected. Through selection by membrane permeability, the method described in this work employs positive dielectrophoresis (pDEP) for separation and purification of viable and VBNC species from water and allows concentration of bacteria for downstream applications.

The winter wheat cv. Širvinta-1 was grown at the Aleksandras Stulginskis Universitys Experimental Station during the period 2006.2009. The soil of the experimental site is medium textured loamy carbonaceous leached soil - Cal(ca)ric Epihypogleyic Luvisol. Winter wheat additionally foliar - fertilized with liquid amide nitrogen fertilizer at a rate of 10 kg ha-1 N containing different concentrations of amino acids (0.0.3.0%) at milk maturity stage, produced a grain yield increase of 0.16.0.53 t ha-1. Amino acids were also found to improve winter wheat yield quality indicators. Under the effect of amino acids, grain protein content increased by 0.52.0.87 percentage points, sedimentation volume by 2.5 ml, wet gluten values by 0.7 . 1.3 percentage units and falling number by 24 s. Winter wheat grain yield were found to statistically significantly correlate with amino acid concentration in liquid amide nitrogen fertilizer (n= 0.95*, respectively).
