This dissertation tackles the problem of non-normality in the distribution of returns and attempts to formulate a proprietary trading strategy to arbitrage the markets using appropriate statistical and mathematical tools. The first essay provides fundamental understanding to fractional Brownian motion (fBm) process, its characteristic Hurst exponent, and the concept of unit root in time series data. The study shows that a simple autoregressive (AR) process with suitable lag coefficients is able to effectively replicate the fractal time series and preserves its characteristic Hurst exponent. Thirty-one cases of patients suffering from metastatic melanoma have been scanned before and after two and after four cycles of treatment. For each patient, we calculated the fractal and multifractal dimensions using the box-counting method on the digitalised PET/CT images of all three studies to assess the therapeutic outcome. We modelled the spreading of malignant cells in the body via kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to address the dynamical evolution of the metastatic process and to predict the spatial distribution of malignant lesions. Our analysis shows that the fractal dimensions which describe the tracer dispersion in the body decrease consistently with the deterioration of the patients therapeutic outcome condition. In this paper, a novel fast method for modeling mammograms by deterministic fractal coding approach to detect the presence of microcalcifications, which are early signs of breast cancer, is presented. The modeled mammogram obtained using fractal encoding method is visually similar to the original image containing microcalcifications, and therefore, when it is taken out from the original mammogram, the presence of microcalcifications can be enhanced. The limitation of fractal image modeling is the tremendous time required for encoding. In the present work, instead of searching for a matching domain in the entire domain pool of the image, three methods based on mean and variance, dynamic range of the image blocks, and mass center features are used. Easy enough to do. Well, easy enough if you have enough memory to handle very large data sets. Luckily enough, we had just enough memory for this script & data series, and we were happy. The image was generated, and everything worked fine.. Still, we wanted to improve on that. One problem with this visualization is that two horizontally adjacent pixels dont have anything to do with each other. Remembering xkcds Map of the Internet, I decided to use the Hilbert Curve. I started with wikipedias version of the code for the Python turtle and changed it to generate a string of instructions of where to put pixels. On the way I improved the time complexity by changing it to have only two recursion calls instead of four. (It can probably be taken down to one by the way, I leave that as a challenge to the reader :). Thermal conductivity of frost is not only related to density, but also affected by its microstructure and environmental conditions, and it will continuously change with the formation and growth of frost. Images of frost formation and growth on the cryogenic surface in various shapes at different stages were obtained by experimental measurements, and a numerical simulation of frost formation and growth was carried out based on Diffusion Limited Aggregation (DLA) model of fractal theory in this paper. Based on the frost structure obtained by experiment, the fractal dimension of pore area distribution and porosity of frost layer on the cryogenic finned-tube vaporizer were calculated by using fractal method, and combined with heat conduction model of frost layer obtained by thermal resistance method, the thermal conductivity of frost on the cryogenic surface was calculated. The result shows that the thermal conductivity calculated by the fractal model coincides with the range of the experimental data.

In sexually-reproducing organisms, including the dwarf mistletoe Arceuthobium americanum, prophase I of meiosis is prolonged (8 months for female A. americanum). Conversely, metaphase I, where chromosome pairs line up along a dividing cells equator, is relatively brief, difficult to predict, but critical regarding the random distribution of the paternal and maternal chromosomes in sexual organisms. However, descriptions of meiosis as either a continuum or stages are limited to qualitative observations. A quantification of meiosis can provide mathematical descriptors and allow for the prediction of when chromosomes reach the equator; this will not only be useful to researchers of cell division, but also to those requiring a large sample of metaphase I materials. The sols prepared by mixing a ZrOCl2 acidified solution to a hot H2SO4 aqueous solutions were studied in order to clarify the mechanism of thermoreversible sol-gel transition observed in this system. The viscoelastic properties of these suspensions were analyzed during the sol-gel transition by dynamic rheological measurements and quasi-elastic light scattering. The rheological properties were correlated to mass fractal and nearly linear growth models, and percolation theory. The results evidence that the thermoreversible sol-gel transition in this system is due to the formation of a network of physically linked aggregates having fractal structure. The decrease of the SO42- contents in the initial solution leads to the decrease of the fractal dimensionality from 2.3 to 1.8, indicating a change of the kinetic mechanism of aggregate growth. We focus the area of a producing gas field with special respect to the analysis of seismic and sub-seismic deformation which requires a very detailed fault detection to bridge the information gap between seismic data and well data. Advanced coherency algorithms as Shaded-Relief take into account local dip and azimuth distribution of coherent energy. This leads to detect additional tectonic lineaments than could have been inferred from conventional amplitude images. Beside fracture attributes like fault density by length or connectivity, we show the attribute Fractal Dimension, which is an index for the relation of long to short fractures. Results are displayed in a map showing the areal distribution of the attribute. Correlation between FMI/FMS Log Data and FD values is linear. Strong seasonality is observed in the volatile hourly Alberta temperature and its low- and high-order statistical moments. We propose a time series model consisting of a linear combination of an annual sinusoidal model, a diurnal sinusoidal model and a fractional residual model, to study the characteristics of these spatial and time-dependent Alberta temperatures. Wavelet multi-resolution analysis is used to measure Hurst exponents of the temperature series. Our empirical results show that these Hurst exponents vary over various time scales, indicating the existence of multi-fractality in the temperatures. Such temperature models are of importance for the pricing and insurance of agricultural crops, of tourist resorts and of all forms of energy extraction and generation of importance to the resource-based economy of Alberta. The thesis investigates a direct and sensitive method for the detection of biomolecules as indicators of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. This is of significant clinical importance for patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) of which Ireland has one of the highest rates in the world per head of population. Cell-to-cell communication (quorum sensing, QS) in P. aeruginosa is an important pathway to triggering biofilms which create added complications for patients. Different conventional analytical methods for the analysis and detection of P. aeruginosa QS signaling molecules exist. An overview of capillary electrophoresis (CE) and the boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode are given. In this thesis, new approaches to separation and sensing these signaling molecules are developed. Analog superconductive components have been integrated to form a device capable of crosscorrelation between two wideband analog input signals. Arrays of Nb/Nb205/Pb tunnel junctions perform the mixing of delayed samples of two frequency-offset analog signals counterpropagating along a niobium tapped transmission line. The resultant mixer products from the junction array are integrated and stored in a high-Q (ft,' 600) lumped element L-C resonator tuned to the signal difference frequency. A superconductive tunnel junction imbedded in the resonator circuit is operated as a variable-threshold comparator to detect the time-integrated current stored in the resonator. We present results showing the correlation properties of such an individual correlator cell, together with the design and performance of a 4-junction-logic (4JL)-based digital address encoder to be used in a multichannel correlator device.
