Intravitreal ranibizumab therapy was associated with thinning of the subfoveal choroid in patients treated for unilateral idiopathic subfoveal choroidal neovascularization, a study found. The prospective study included 16 patients with unilateral idiopathic subfoveal choroidal neovascularization who underwent a single intravitreal injection of 0.5 mg ranibizumab and subsequent injections as needed. Investigators used enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography to measure subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT). Mean patient age was 31.9 years. Visual acuity was also evaluated. The respective midget bipolar cells are almost solely synaptic upon single midget ganglion cells (Fig. 14), except in the very central fovea where a few midget bipolar synapses are shared with neighboring midget ganglion cells because of the crowding of neurons and neuropil (Fig. 13). Since we know (Nelson et al., 1978) that ganglion cells branching in sublamina a will be OFF center and those branching in sublamina b will be ON center we can be sure that midget ganglion cells branching close to the amacrine cell layer will be OFF center and those branching close to the ganglion cell layer will be ON center. This ON and OFF midget ganglion cell organization in primate has now been proved conclusively by Dacey and coauthors (2000). So it appears that in the foveal region and out to the borders of the central retina (about 4 mm from the fovea center) the midget pathways of the human fovea are organized in the following manner: 1 cone to 2 midget bipolar cells (ON- and OFF-center bipolar types) to 2 ...
Observations of visual acuity and the conjunctival, macular, and perimacular vascularity have been assessed in patients with homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease. There were 17 matched pairs, each consisting of one patient with a high count (greater than or equal to 15%) and one with a low count (less than or equal to 5%) of irreversibly sickled cells (ISCs). The macular vascular bed was assessed by measurements of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ), perimacular avascular zones, and counts of perimacular vascular abnormalities (perimacular counts). Small foveal avascular zones and high perimacular counts were commoner in younger than older patients and there was a significant inverse correlation between size of the FAZ and the perimacular count. These observations were compatible with the hypothesis that perimacular vessel anomalies represent the early vaso-occlusive phase which progresses to ischaemia and the formation and enlargement of avascular areas. Visual acuity was assessed by Snellens test ...
Fluorescein angiographic findings were classified as previously described. OCT and OCT-A foveal structure was analysed and differences calculated in pixels with ImageJ software. Results : FA demonstrated a well-defined foveal avascular zone in all 12 eyes. All bevacizumab-treated eyes showed avascular peripheral retina with vascular abnormalities. On OCT in all subjects, bevacizumab-treated eyes tended to have thinner fovea than laser-treated eyes; OCT-A showed in all eyes a persistent superficial capillary network in the foveal region. Conclusions : different imaging techniques are complementary in this study. Further studies are need to understand different aspects of the developing foveal structure. This is an abstract that was submitted for the 2018 ARVO Annual Meeting, held in Honolulu, Hawaii, April 29 - May 3, 2018.. ...
Purpose : Early age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has been associated with reduced retinal sensitivity (RS). This study assessed foveal microstructural changes influencing retinal sensitivity and fixation stability using microperimeter MP-1. Methods : In this cross-sectional study, 22 eyes of 22 patients (mean age: 75 ± 9.02 years) with intermediate AMD were enrolled. RS and bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA) were obtained by microperimetry MP-1 (Humphrey 10-2 68-loci grid) under mesopic conditions. Drusen type, drusenoid pigment epithelial detachment (DPED), hyperreflective foci (HF), integrity of external limiting membrane (ELM), inner ellipsoid band (Isel), RPE/Bruchs membrane complex (RPE/B) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (CT) were analyzed in the foveal region and compared with retinal sensitivity and fixation stability findings. Spearmans rank correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the relationship between variables. Logistic regression analysis was also used to ...

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A) is an emerging imaging modality with which the retinal circulation can be visualized by computing the decorrelation signal on a pixel-by-pixel basis. This non-invasive, in vivo visualization of the retinal microvasculature can be instrumental in studying the onset and development of retinal vascular diseases. Quantitative measurements, such as capillary density, can be used to stratify the risk of disease progression, visual loss, and also for monitoring the course of disease. Due to projection artifact and poor contrast, it is often difficult to trace individual vessels when only one en face image is visualized. Averaging of up to 10 serially acquired OCT-A images with parallel strip-wise microsaccadic noise removal and localized nonrigid registration is presented. Additionally, the use of a deep learning method for the quantification of Foveal Avascular Zone (FAZ) parameters and perifoveal capillary density of prototype and commercial OCT-A ...

One concern with all anti-angiogenic agents is their potential for systemic inhibition of VEGF that may produce cardiovascular or cerebrovascular complications, or inhibit wound healing. The immediate and long-term systemic effects of these drugs, especially those prescribed off-label, are largely unknown and difficult to determine in an elderly population already prone to vascular events. Additional drawbacks to the intravitreally administered therapeutics include patient discomfort, intraocular infection (endophthalmitis), retinal tear or ...

This red spot is a retinal area that appears red because of gangliosides in the surrounding retinal ganglion cells. The choroidal circulation is showing through red in this foveal region where all retinal ganglion cells are pushed aside to increase visual acuity. Thus, this cherry-red spot is the only normal part of the retina ...
challenge for any diving bird is the change in refraction between air and water. The eyes of many birds have two foveae (the fovea is the area of the retina the greatest density of light receptors),[14] and a kingfisher is able to switch from the main central fovea to the auxiliary fovea when it enters water; a retinal streak of high receptor density which connects the two foveae allows the image to swing temporally as the bird drops onto the prey.[15] The egg-shaped lens of the eye points towards the auxiliary fovea, enabling the bird to maintain visual acuity underwater.[14] Because of the positions of the foveae, the kingfisher has monocular vision in air, and binocular vision in water. The underwater vision is not as a sharp as in air, but the ability to judge the distance of moving prey is more important than the sharpness of the image.[15 ...

where p and q are unit fractional amounts, such that p + q = 1. Additivity as defined by Equation 1 significantly restricts the relevance of Vλ for representing the spectral sensitivity of the human visual system to a small handful of visual task conditions [16]. Because of additivity, however, Vλ has become the universal visual response function for commerce and for government regulations [11].. Despite its assumed universality, the psychophysical techniques used to develop Vλ only functionally characterize the spectral sensitivity of the achromatic (luminance) channel for the human fovea which is dominated by input from only two of the three cone types. The fovea constitutes only about 2% of the retina and provides humans with high spatial resolution. Only densely packed long-wavelength (L) and middle-wavelength (M) sensitive cones are found in the center of the fovea; although all three cone types are found throughout the remainder of the retina, the short-wavelength (S) sensitive cones ...

Most objects in orbits move along an elliptical path. An ellipse is a shape that can be thought of as a stretched out circle or an oval. An ellipse can be very long and thin, or it can be quite round - almost like a circle. Mathematicians and astronomers use a quantity named eccentricity to describes how nearly circular (or not) an ellipse is. An ellipse with a small eccentricity, like 0.1 or 0.2, is almost as round as a circle. A long, thin ellipse might have an eccentricity of 0.8 or 0.9. The eccentricity of an ellipse must always be less than one, but it can be very, very close to one - like 0.99, 0.999, or even larger!. A circle has an eccentricity of zero. A circle is considered a special type of ellipse, in the same way that a square is considered a special type of rectangle.. The eccentricity of Earths orbit is very small, so Earths orbit is nearly circular. Earths orbital eccentricity is only 0.0167. Mars has a somewhat larger orbital eccentricity of 0.0935. Do those studies take peripheral vision into account? Ive noticed that when I look at something, my gaze will fix on a certain point while I consider the area around it for several seconds at a time. Maybe Im looking at a torso and tracking the overall shape of it, but it sure looks like Im staring at its navel for no reason. This is also how I speed-read: by using peripheral vision to take in more than one line at a time, I dont have to whip my eyes back and forth trying to get to the bottom of the page ...

The impact of pregnancy on the choroid is still under investigation. The aim of this study is to compare choroidal thickness measurements of healthy pregnant women in the third trimester and healthy non-pregnant women using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). This cross-sectional study included 122 eyes of 61 women, divided into two groups: 27 healthy pregnant women in the third trimester and 34 age-matched healthy non-pregnant women. Choroidal thickness was measured using Enhanced Depth Imaging OCT at ten different locations: at the fovea and every 500 µm from the fovea up to 2500 µm temporally and up to 2000 µm nasally. There were no significant differences in the ten measurements of choroidal thickness comparing both groups. Mean subfoveal choroidal thickness was 304.1 + 9.6 µm in the control group and 318.1 + 15.6 µm in the pregnant women group (p = 0.446). There was also no statistically significant association between gestational age and choroidal thickness measurements in the
Macular edema is a common cause of visual loss at uveitic patients. The aim of our study was to investigate retinal and choroidal thickness at the macula in anterior (AU) and intermediate (IMU) uveitis and in healthy individuals using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Case-control study of 21 patients with AU and 23 patients with IMU and 34 age-matched healthy controls was performed with Spectralis SD-OCT (Heidelberg Engineering, Germany). High resolution SD-OCT scans and macular mapping were applied for automated measurement of retinal thickness. Standardized, masked manual measurement of the choroidal thickness was performed in the center of the ETDRS fields on enhanced depth imaging (EDI) scans. Evaluation of central retinal subfield thickness, 3 mm and 6 mm perifoveal rings was performed in the corresponding ETDRS zones in patient groups. The mean central retinal subfield thickness was significantly higher in IMU (368.65 ± 115.88 μm, p = 0.0003), but not significantly
We studied the color-match-area effect and the Stiles-Crawford effect in 10 observers with age-related macular changes. Observers were graded on a scale of I to IV according to the Sarks classification, which correlates fundus appearance and visual acuity with the severity of postmortem histological changes in Bruchs membrane. Observers in group II showed subtle abnormalities of color matching; those in groups III and IV showed more-severe abnormalities. The Stiles-Crawford effect was abnormal in 9 of 10 eyes tested. Only one observer showed a Stiles-Crawford effect that had a well-defined peak near the center of the pupil and a near-normal bandpass. The results suggest that early age-related changes visible in the fundus can be revealed by psychophysical tests of photoreceptor architecture.. © 1988 Optical Society of America. Results Compared with the fellow eyes, eyes with ERM after surgery had a lower parafoveal vascular density (VD) and a smaller foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area in both SCP and DCP (all p,0.001). Interocular differences in the FAZ area and parafoveal VD were correlated with preoperative and postoperative central foveal thicknesses (all p,0.05). In addition, interocular differences in macular vascular integrity had a tendency to be correlated with SD-OCT parameters of the inner retinal layers. Finally, greater interocular differences in the FAZ area and parafoveal VD of both plexuses were significantly associated with worse postoperative BCVAs (all p,0.05). ...
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an in vivo, high-resolution imaging modality (resolution, 12 μm; wavelength, 1300 nm; probe size, 0.018 inch; Lightlab Imaging). The principle is analogous to that of pulse-echo ultrasound imaging; however light is used rather than sound to create the image. The case presented illustrates the 5-year follow-up examination after bare metal stent implantation (Figure 1). Intravascular ultrasound imaging (IVUS) shows concentric, moderate neointimal hyperplasia (Figure 2). Intravascular OCT provides detailed visualization of the individual stent struts, neointimal proliferation, and neovascularization that is missed by IVUS (Figure 3). ...
An 83-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with anterior myocardial infarction; treatment was begun with dual antiplatelet therapy (aspirin and clopidogrel) and anticoagulation therapy. Urgent coronary angiography revealed thrombotic occlusion of the anterior descending artery (Figure 1A) and a severe lesion in the circumflex artery. Thromboaspiration was performed in the anterior descending artery, and a bare-metal stent (3×13mm) was implanted with excellent angiographic results (Figure 1B). Three days later, the patient was asymptomatic and another bare-metal stent was placed in the circumflex artery, after which a small filling defect was observed (Figure 1C, yellow arrow) in the anterior descending artery stent, with contrast retention and slow clearance (Figure 1D). Optical coherence tomography demonstrated adequate stent expansion and good apposition, but revealed a small thrombus in its interior (Figure 2, T). Moreover, there was an interesting flow pattern, with images ...

So how do these observations resolve your question? Quite simply, the lateral movement of information from the foveal/macular photoreceptors happens predominantly in the outer plexiform layer. That buys the inner plexiform layer considerably more space to further spread those signals laterally to ganglion cells, and avoids the problematic situation you suggested of having an extra-thick ring of ganglion cells immediately around the fovea. The end result is that ganglion cells that respond to photoreceptors in the foveal region of space are even further out from the retina than the bipolar cells they connect to, which are themselves displaced.. As far as why a cherry red spot looks so large, that honestly depends on two factors: the disease or disorder in question and the zoom used. Bear in mind that the red color comes from, as far as I know, the blood vessels in the choroid itself. It would therefore not necessarily correspond exactly to the size of the macula, but instead to any area which is ...
38 eyes from 38 patients with acute NAION (less than 14 days of initial symptom), 38 uninvolved fellow eyes and 76 eyes from 38 healthy age and sex matched subjects were included at a single academic hospital. Choroidal thickness was measured by enhanced depth imaging (EDI) of spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Peripapillary choroidal thickness was measured at 1000 and 1500 microns from bruck´s membrane opening (BMO) at the superior, inferior, temporal, and nasal directions, using horizontal and vertical raster scans, centreed at optic nerve head. Subfoveal choroidal thickness was measured on horizontal raster scan at centre, and 500 microns apart in temporal and nasal sides. Ganglion cell-inner plexiform complex layer was measured using automated segmentation tool of OCT device. Statistical analyses were used to compare choroidal thickness among NAION eyes, uninvolved fellow eyes and control eyes ...
AIM A comparison of retinal thickness (RT) measurements with optical coherence tomography (OCT) in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) and no or minimal diabetic retinopathy (DR) versus healthy controls. METHODS Fifty-three patients with type 1 DM with no or minimal DR underwent full ophthalmic examination, fundus photography and OCT. Mean RT measured by OCT was calculated for the central fovea, the fovea, the pericentral and the peripheral area of the macula, and compared to healthy controls. RESULTS Mean RT in the pericentral area was lower in patients with minimal DR (267 microm +/- 20 microm; n = 23) compared to healthy controls (281 microm +/-13 microm; p = 0.005; n = 28). Mean pericentral RT in patients without DR (276 microm +/-14 microm; n = 30) was less than pericentral RT in healthy controls, but higher than in patients with minimal DR, without being statistically significant. None of the other regions showed a significant change. CONCLUSION In this study a significantly
Existing pixel-based just noticeable distortion (JND) models only take into account luminance adaptation and texture masking (TM). Similarly, existing discrete cosine transform (DCT) based models do not take into account foveal vision effects and do not estimate TM efficiently. As human visual system (HVS) is not sensitive to distortion below the JND threshold, estimation of the perceptual visibility threshold is widely used in digital and video processing applications. The authors propose a comprehensive and efficient pixel-based JND model incorporating all major factors which contribute to the JND estimation. The evaluation of contrast masking (CM) is done by distinguishing the edge and TM with respect to the entropy masking properties of the HVS. Similarly, the foveal vision effects are also taken into account for the comprehensive estimation of contrast sensitivity function (CSF). Hence, the proposed pixel-based JND model incorporates the spatio-temporal CSF, foveal vision effects, influence ...
The relative numbers of L- and M-cones in the inner fovea have been estimated by various psychophysical means (see Psychophysical estimates of the relative numbers of L- and M-cones). Taken together, the mean ratios yielded by these methods (with the exception of spectral acuity) tend to suggest that there are twice as many L- as M-cones. However, it should be pointed out that each method has serious problems of interpretation and each ultimately depends on the reliability of cone isolation procedures. Moreover, although the mean estimates of L- to M-cone ratios suggest that there are twice as many L- as M- cones in the central fovea, the individual ratios are highly variable between observers, ranging from 0.33:1 to 10:1. The largest variations occur in individual photometric functions and in individual red-green flicker ratios -- which are the ratio of flicker sensitivity for red and green lights. The similar amino acid sequences of the L- and M- cones, so far have prevented the development of ...
The photoreceptors of the living human eye are known to exhibit waveguide-characteristic features. This is evidenced by the Stiles-Crawford effect observed for light incident near the pupil rim, and by the directional component of light reflected off the retina in the related optical Stiles-Crawford effect. We describe a model for the coupling of light to/from photoreceptors on the basis of waveguide theory that includes diffraction between the eye pupil and the photoreceptor apertures, and we show that valuable insight can be gained from a Gaussian approximation to the mode field. We apply this knowledge to a detailed study of the relationship between the Stiles-Crawford effect and its optical counterpart.. © 2005 Optical Society of America. Full Article , PDF Article ...

Well, generally speaking, if there is a problem with the processing or transmission of visual information, wavy peripheral vision may occur. And that can be kind of normal for many people. And then you should know that peripheral vision is very important in sports performance. In daily life, you can try a form of meditation called Hakalau which was used by the ancient Hawaiians to practice focusing on peripheral vision.
0026]In general, a cost function could be any linear or nonlinear combination of location dependent terms that increases as the likelihood of the location being at or near the center of the fovea decreases. For example, the distance function could be squared in either Equation 1 or 2. Alternatively, instead of using a radial filter on the en-face image, the factor or factors may be extracted from tomographic data in the image volume. It is known that the distance from the Internal Limiting Membrane (ILM) to the Inner Plexiform Layer (IPL) is normally a minimum in the neighborhood of the center of the fovea, so the cost function may include a measure of the distance from the ILM to the IPL. Because of the difficulties involved in segmenting the IPL, it is likely that another measure of local depression of the ILM would be used, such as a measure of local curvature or the deviation from a best fit ellipsoidal surface. The cost function could also include a measure of the retinal thickness as ...

I have periodically seen wavy lines in my peripheral vision. I can close both eyes and still see them. It lasts only a - Answered by a verified Eye Doctor
(Medical Xpress) -- Two USC scientists are bringing peripheral vision into focus, showing that the way the brain sharpens its attention while the eyes are in motion leads to false assumptions about how objects should look.

The thought of shortening our assessments has definitely crossed our minds. But while doing so may improve dropout rates and thereby increase the candidate pool, it can significantly compromise its psychometric validity and reliability. This takes away the whole purpose of a comprehensive pre-hiring assessment!. Every section, scale, and question in our assessments were developed by pioneers in the field of Occupational Psychology, and have then been iteratively reviewed by our team of psychometricians using years of research and knowledge. The seemingly long assessment was never intended to filter out uncommitted candidates per se, but to conserve the scientific elements that are key in evaluating a candidates job-fit and compatibility with the company.. At the end of the day, hiring the right person is ultimately the goal, which HR pros should know by now takes more than just a resume and cover letter. It is our duty at Prevue to cater toward the needs of our clients, but we also feel the ...
