A criminal investigation allows prosecutors to hold the threat of punishment, including jail time, over individuals at Facebook," cyberlaw expert and professor Mark Bartholomew told Yahoo Finance. "This could result in even more embarrassing disclosures coming to light that would further tarnish Facebooks already shaky public image.". Its fair to speculate that Facebook knew of the criminal probe before the Times reported it, as their statement acknowledges "we are cooperating with investigators." So its clearly no coincidence that founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced last week that Facebook would evolve into a "privacy-focused platform," spouting many infosec buzzwords but providing little detail on what the heck that would actually mean. That strategy has more or less worked to keep Facebooks valuation in the hundreds of billions. But now that possible criminal charges are looming, the Facebook "family of apps" may not be one big, happy family for much longer. Also, get out the ...
On any given Saturday, children across Joint Base Lewis-McChord are outside running and riding bicycles with friends. Most are innocently oblivious to the fact that for some kids, those are things they will never experience.. Last week, 11-year-old, Colby Pretz visited JBLM to experience a lifelong dream. For as long as Colby could remember he has wanted to be a special agent. Until then, his dream was out of reach as a baby he was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy. Colby has never run or known what it is like to play outside without his wheelchair. SMA affects motor neurons in the spinal cord and brain. As a consequence, Colby s muscles continuously weaken. Fifteen Soldiers assigned to the 44th Military Police Detachment, Criminal Investigation Division, came together to make Colby s dream of becoming a criminal investigator a reality Saturday at the CID office on JBLM Lewis Main.. Specialist Blanca Shore, a 44th MP Det. (CID) investigator, whose son also has SMA, paved the road for Colby ...

In the absence of any other conclusive forensic evidence, DNA profiling is the method of choice for body identification. This study focuses on the case of a carbonized corpse whose complete autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) profile could not lead to direct identification by the investigators. To assist in the progress of investigation, we endeavoured to determine the biogeographical origin and eye colour of the deceased individual. Along with Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA analyses, we applied a next-generation sequencing (NGS) approach to the study of ancestry informative markers (AIMs) using the HID-Ion AmpliSeq™ Ancestry Panel launched by Thermo Fisher Scientific. This work gave us the opportunity to test this new technology in a real forensic case. Although this study highlights the benefits of such a combined approach, as it markedly improves the specificity of the biogeographical profile, it also underlines the need for the accurate characterization of a larger collection of reference
The proposed research incorporates several inventions to produce structural components that are assembled into a highly enhanced Toxic Material Forensic Container (TMFC) for transport and storage of contaminated articles. Bio-hazardous materials are frequently encountered in investigations, and the current evidence containers are designed to handle the issues associated with those materials. However, incident scenes resulting from military or terrorist activity increase the challenges for forensic evidence handling. New TMFC provided with unique features will be produced via a collaboration between NanoScale Corporation and Clemson University. The key feature of the produced system is integration of NanoScales reactive nano materials with Clemsons selected fabrics for enhanced CB-protection. In Phase I, we identified two promising formulations for CB-containment, designed the optimum system configuration, and are testing the baseline system. Key areas that will be refined during the Phase II ...
a) The Legislature finds that DNA databases are important tools in criminal investigations, in the exclusion of individuals who are the subject of criminal investigations or prosecutions and in detecting recidivist acts. It is the policy of this state to assist federal, state, and local criminal justice and law enforcement agencies in the identification and detection of individuals in criminal investigations and the identification and location of missing and unidentified persons. Therefore, it is in the best interests of the citizens of this state to establish a statewide DNA database containing DNA samples submitted by persons convicted of or arrested for felony offenses and convicted of certain misdemeanor offenses. Additionally, the statewide DNA database shall include DNA records and samples necessary for the identification of missing persons and unidentified human remains, including DNA samples voluntarily contributed by relatives of missing persons. ...

When DNA evidence began appearing in U.S. courtrooms in the late 1980s, it was heralded as the greatest leap forward in criminal investigation since fingerprinting. In the following decades, its analysis has helped identify and incarcerate the guilty as well as exonerate and free the innocent.. Now, the next generation of DNA analysis, which researchers say can reveal a level of detail far beyond what currently is used in criminal investigation, is awaiting its first courtroom test in Massachusetts.. Prosecutors there plan to prove in court that a pair of abductions and rapes were committed by the defendant and not by his identical twin brother. The DNA shared by identical twins was one of the problems of earlier testing, which was not nuanced enough to point out differences between twins that scientists say exist.. "The forensic application of this testing is new, and to the best of our knowledge, our case will be the first prosecution to use it," Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. ...

Phylogenetic analysis may serve as a valuable tool in assessing the epidemiological relation between viral DNA sequences. In order to increase the likelihood of observing phylogenetic separation of sequences as well as to give strong forensic evidence regarding transmission, phylogenetic analysis needs to be performed on appropriate local control sequences and by sequencing of at least two genetic regions of reasonable length, depending on the gene under investigation. The aim of this study was to explore the suspected epidemiological linkage between DNA sequences isolated from three HIV-1 infected patients by means of phylogenetic analyses.. Phylogenetic analysis was performed on investigated sequences together with a number of local controls, that are viral sequences from infected individuals in the same location and diagnosed in a similar time period. Two genetic regions, of 1,6 kb for pol and 800 bp for env, were amplified and sequenced from viral RNA extracted from plasma. Transmission ...

The committee noted that even though Childrens Administration wasnt required to - and didnt - consult with police about moving supervised visits to Powells home, such discussions can be "beneficial" in a case such as this in which the parent whos involved is also the subject of "an open criminal investigation." Police could provide information "that might affect decisions" about the length and location of visits and the need for supervision, the committee stated. Detectives involved in the criminal investigation of Powell told the committee that they werent aware that supervised visits had moved to his home. If the detectives had known, they would have had "concerns," although they believe decisions about visitation are up to Childrens Administration and courts, the committee reported ...

The enzymatic degradation of cocaine in blood samples, even during transport to a forensic laboratory, is a common problem in toxicological analysis. This can be avoided by the use of blood-sampling devices such as gray-top Vacutainers containing the cholinesterase inhibitor sodium fluoride. In the present study, which included 147 authentic cases, blood samples were collected into two different tubes, one containing fluoride/oxalate and one without stabilizing agents. In all cases, both samples were analyzed for drugs of abuse using Abbott FPIA immunoassays after precipitation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for quantitative analysis. The cannabinoid immunoassay showed markedly lower values in the fluoride-containing samples; this was investigated further and could be explained by hemolysis of these samples. In addition, the concentrations of 11-nor-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid (THCCOOH) were lower in these samples. A stability study with the THCCOOH acyl ...

piperacillin-tazobactam. In addition, this O104 strain posses an ability to produce special enzymes that give it what might be called "bacteria superpowers" known technically as ESBLs:. "Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBLs) are enzymes that can be produced by bacteria making them resistant to cephalosporins e.g. cefuroxime, cefotaxime and ceftazidime - which are the most widely used antibiotics in many hospitals," explains the Health Protection Agency in the UK (http://www.hpa.org.uk/Topics/Infect…).. On top of that, this O104 strain possesses two genes - TEM-1 and CTX-M-15 - that "have been making doctors shudder since the 1990s," reports The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentis…). And why do they make doctors shudder? Because theyre so deadly that many people infected with such bacteria experience critical organ failure and simply die.. Bioengineering a deadly superbug. So how, exactly, does a bacterial strain come into existence thats resistant to over a dozen antibiotics ...
