Background: Dental records, fingerprint, and DNA comparisons are probably the most common techniques used for a persons identification, allowing fast and secure identification processes. However, sometimes it is necessary to apply different and less known techniques such as lip prints. The potential of lip prints to determine sex has been well exhibited and documented. However, very few studies have been conducted using lip prints for population identification. Objective: To determine the predominant lip print patterns in males and females in relation to Kerala and Manipuri population and also to compare the lip print patterns between these populations. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised of 60 subjects, which included 30 each from Kerala and Manipuri. Lipstick was applied evenly, and the lip print was obtained by dabbing a strip of cellophane. The classification scheme proposed by Tsuchihashi was used to classify the lip print patterns and the data were statistically analyzed using the ...
Wildlife forensic science - Wikipedia
Wildlife forensic science is forensic science applied to legal issues involving wildlife. With the initiative of the Society for Wildlife Forensic Science (SWFS), the Scientific Working Group for Wildlife Forensic Sciences (SWGWILD) was formed in 2011. While animals and plants are the victims in the crimes of illegal wildlife trade and animal abuse, society also pays a heavy price when those crimes are used to fund illegal drugs, weapons and terrorism. Links between human trafficking, public corruption and illegal fishing have also been reported. The continued development and integration of wildlife forensic science as a field will be critical for successful management of the many significant social and conservation issues related to the illegal wildlife trade and wildlife law enforcement. Background: Personal identification is an integral part of forensic investigations. For the same, DNA profiling and fingerprints are the most commonly used tools. But these evidences are not ubiquitous and may not necessarily be obtained from the crime scene. In such a scenario, other physical and trace evidences play a pivotal role and subsequently the branches employed are forensic osteology, odontology, biometrics, etc. A relatively recent field in the branch of forensic odontology is cheiloscopy or the study of lip prints. A comparison of lip prints from the crime scene and those obtained from the suspects may be useful in the identification or narrowing down the investigation. Aim: The purpose of the present study is to determine the gender and population variability in the morphological patterns of lip prints among brahmins, Jats, and scheduled castes of Delhi and Haryana, India. Settings and Design: Samples were collected from Jats, brahmins, and scheduled castes of Delhi and Haryana. The ...

Forensic identification - Wikipedia
Forensic DNA analysis can be a useful tool in aiding forensic identification because DNA is found in almost all cells of our bodies except red blood cells. Deoxyribonucleic acid is located in two different places of the cell, the nucleus; which is inherited from both parents, and the mitochondria; inherited maternally. Similar to fingerprints, an individuals DNA profile and characteristics are unique. Forensic identification using DNA can be useful in different cases such as determining suspects in violent crimes, solving paternity/maternity, and identifying human remains of victims from mass disasters or missing person cases. [13] It is also used to link suspects or victims to each other or to crime scenes. When a sample is located at a crime scene, it must be collected, processed, and transported, along with a chain of custody, to the laboratory for analysis, so that if a DNA profile is generated it can be accepted in court. Proper evidence collection and preservation is crucial to ensure ...

ASFO Dental Record Retention Position Paper | American Society of Forensic Odontology
Right now, in the United States, there is a problem that every dentist can help with. As of July 1, 2014 there were 8,118 unidentified people reported by medical examiners and coroners to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). Over eight thousand decedents are waiting to be identified, with countless more family members grieving for their loved ones.. There are several ways to identify someone who has died. Visually is one way, but it is not as accurate as other, scientific means. If there has been decomposition, burning, or trauma, very often visual identification may not be possible or could lead to misidentification. If these conditions are advanced, fingerprint identification may not be possible, either. DNA is a wonderful tool in forensics, but it is costly if done at a private lab, and if done in a federally funded lab, the wait time in 2011 was one year. For these reasons, dental record comparison is often the fastest, most cost effective, scientific method of ...

The DNA Science behind our DNA testing | AlphaBiolabs
STRs have become popular DNA markers because they are easily amplified by PCR without the problem of differential amplification; that is, the PCR products for STRs are similar in amount, making analysis easier.. Because of their smaller size, STR alleles can also be separated from other chromosomal locations more easily to ensure closely linked loci are not chosen. Closely linked loci do not follow the predictable pattern of random distribution in the population, making statistical analysis difficult. An individual inherits one copy of an STR from each parent, which may or may not have similar repeat sizes. The number of repeats in STR markers can be highly variable among individuals, which make these STRs effective for human identification purposes.. For human identification and relationship testing purposes, it is important to have DNA markers that exhibit the highest possible variation to discriminate between samples. Our PCR process specifically targets 24 STR markers within the genome (a ...

However, achieving the same accuracy level across multiple races such as Caucasian, African American, and Hispanic is still highly challenging because of the strong diversity of the growth process of each race. Furthermore, difficulty of gathering training samples uniformly over various races and age brackets makes the problem even more challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel age estimation method that can overcome the above problems. Our method combines a recently proposed machine learning technique called Least-Squares Probabilistic ...

On-line Guide to the positive identification of Members of the Cactus Family
With nearly 200 recognized species, the genus Mammillaria is one of the largest of the cactus family. For the most part, these species are globose or ball-shaped plants which grow either solitary or in clumps. Some clumps may reach over 3 feet (1m) with many stems. Few species grow much over around 6-8 inches in height by 4-6 inches in diameter. All have nipple-like tubercles with dimorphic areoles on the ends. Spines may be stiff and stout, few or many, bristle-like, hair-like, pectinate (comb-like), and come in a wide range of colors. In the axils, that is between the tubercles, there may be wool or bristles or both or neither. Flowers come from second-year growth in these axils and often form a ring around the stem. In many species the flowers are small and pink at less than half-an-inch in diameter. Some are small and yellow or white, while a few species have showy flowers which stand on long floral tubes above the plant. In many cases, the petals will feature a darker midstripe. The fruits ...

The government decreased protection efforts. Despite maintaining victim identification guidelines developed by the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans, and Youth Rehabilitation (MOSAVY) in early 2017, disparate victim identification, referral, and repatriation efforts remained underdeveloped and overlapping across government and law enforcement agencies. Authorities did not provide complete statistics on the number of victims they assisted or referred. During the reporting period, the government imposed a new regulation barring NGOs from representing individuals seeking formal recognition as trafficking victims. Under this new arrangement-which NGOs claimed severely intimidated victims and their families-victims were required to approach the Ministry of Interior for the formal identification needed to access protection services.. With assistance from an international organization, the government continued to operate two transit centers in the border city of Poipet, where it screened for ...

Statistical Analysis in Forensic Science: Evidential Value of Multivariate Physicochemical Data | Wiley
A practical guide for determining the evidential value of physicochemical data Microtraces of various materials (e.g. glass, paint, fibres, and petroleum products) are routinely subjected to physicochemical examination by forensic experts, whose role is to evaluate such physicochemical data in the context of the prosecution and defence propositions. Such examinations return various kinds of information, including quantitative data. From the forensic point of view, the most suitable way to evaluate evidence is the likelihood ratio. This book provides a collection of recent approaches to the determination of likelihood ratios and describes suitable software, with documentation and examples of their use in practice. The statistical computing and graphics software environment R, pre-computed Bayesian networks using Hugin Researcher and a new package, calcuLatoR, for the computation of likelihood ratios are all explored. Statistical Analysis in Forensic Science will provide an invaluable

A study on the lip print pattern of Naga tribes - World News of Natural Sciences - Volume 30, Issue 2 (2020) - PSJD - Yadda
Cheiloscopy is a forensic investigation technique that deals with the identification based on lip traces. Based upon the research, it was established that the arrangement of lines on the red part of human lips is unique for each human being. The present study is an attempt to determine the pattern of lip prints and evaluate its uniqueness in a sample of Naga population and also their association with print in the four quadrants of the lip. A total of 100 (15-40) years individuals were randomly selected. With the help of brush a layer of lipstick was applied on the lips of the subject. Following the basis of Tsuchihashis classification the lip prints collected were studied. It was found that Type I pattern was predominant among the studied subjects followed by Type I and Type III pattern while Type V pattern was the least frequent Lip pattern distribution in (all four quadrants) in both males and females of Nagas. It is found that no two or more persons had similar features of lip grooves. The ...

The government decreased victim identification and protection efforts. The government did not report comprehensive data on victim identification efforts during the reporting period. Media indicated the government and NGOs, at times in partnership, identified at least 1,172 trafficking victims during the reporting period, including men, women, and children exploited in forced labor and sex trafficking. The Railway Protection Force intercepted 244 children from dangerous situations, including potential trafficking. Between January and November 2018, the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana police identified 858 trafficking victims; it was unclear how much overlap existed between this data and cases reported by media. Through the 2016 Crime in India Report, the government reported identifying 22,955 victims the previous reporting period. A 2009 MHA non-binding directive advised state officials to use SOPs for proactive victim identification and referral to services. Not all 29 states employed SOPs, ...

Sex estimation using anthropometry of feet and footprints in a Western Australian population<...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Sex estimation using anthropometry of feet and footprints in a Western Australian population. AU - Hemy, N.. AU - Flavel, Ambika. AU - Ishak, N.I.. AU - Franklin, Daniel. PY - 2013. Y1 - 2013. N2 - An important component of forensic investigation is the identification of deceased (and increasingly living) individuals, which is often the role of the forensic anthropologist. One of the most valuable steps towards identification is via a biological profile, developed through the application of population specific standards. In disaster victim identification scenarios, fleshed feet are often recovered in footwear; footprints are another potential source of trace evidence found at crime scenes. In medico-legal investigations, feet and footprints can be useful for extrapolating living height, it is thus expedient to determine whether sex can be estimated from the same anthropometric data. The aim of the present study is to develop accurate sex estimation standards for a contemporary ...
Presidents Message - September 2015 - Academy News
Source: Victor W. Weedn, MD, JD, 2015-16 President. The Laura and John Arnold Foundation (LJAF) has awarded $1.5M to the Academy to establish a Standards Development Organization (SDO). I believe that this is strategic for our organizations future and critical to our forensic science community now.. Although forensic medicine and toxicology have origins from many centuries ago, many would date the rise of forensic science to the 1893 treatise of Hans Gross. Forensic science became a widely-recognized profession in the 20th century and the forensic science community generally organized over the latter half of the century. It is no coincidence that the Academy was formed in 1948. The beginnings of national and international forensic standards began development only in the last quarter century (e.g., TWGDAM formed in 1988).. The 2009 National Research Council (NRC) Report, Strengthening Forensic Science: A Path Forward was critical of the forensic science community and emphasized the need for ...

Forensic odontostomatology
Teeth are the most durable and enduring structures of human anatomy, surviving fragmentation, partial incineration and severe decomposition. The role of teeth in identification is manifested as significant specifiers of deceased or living individuals. The characteristics of dentalmorphology are genetically-inherited and ascribable to racial or familial ancestry. Dental age identification is attributable to young individuals. The chemical composition of teeth identifies diets during life, as attritional wear patterns do. Bite marks transiently relate to the perpetrator of attacks. Dental restorations and prostheses are evidence of economic, cultural and social status of deceased individuals. Palatal rugae patterns are unique to individuals. The DNA identification of postmortem dental pulp tissue relating to a deceased individual or a living relative is the ultimate criterion of positive association of forensic recognition, as other means of identification become less effective, forensic dental

A Primer on Forensic Science Crime Magazine
Aug. 13, 2012Skulls on the beach of Punuk Island Alaska by Liz Porter The science Many experts start their forensic science timeline in 1810, when a German scientist did a chemical test for a particular ink dye on a document. Three years later, Spaniard Mathieu Orfila published his Toxicologie Générale, as a result of which he is usually regarded as the father of modern toxicology. In 1835, Londoner Henry Goddard, a member of the Bow Street Runners, the unofficial police force set up by the writer and magistrate Henry Fielding, initiated the use of bullet comparison when investigating a burglary. He spotted a flaw in a bullet lodged in a beds backboard, matching it both to other bullets in the suspects gun and to the mould from which the bullets had been made. This enabled him to solve the crime. The butler did it, then invented a story about a masked intruder to cover up his own
