Objectives: Collision frequency during rugby league matches is associated with team success, greater and longer lasting fatigue and increased injury risk. This study researched the sensitivity and specificity of microtechnology to count collision events during rugby league matches. Design: Diagnostic accuracy study. Methods: While wearing a microtechnology device (Catapult, S5), eight professional rugby league players were subjected to a total of 380 collision events during matches. Video footage of each match was synchronised with microtechnology data. The occurrence of each collision event was coded in comparison with whether that event was or was not detected by microtechnology. Results: Microtechnology detected 371 true-positive collision events (sensitivity = 97.6. ±. 1.5%). When low-intensity (<1 PlayerLoad AU), short duration (<1. s) events were excluded from the analysis, specificity was 91.7. ±. 2.5%, accuracy was 92.7. ±. 1.3%, positive likelihood ratio was 11.4. ×/÷. 1.4 ...

This list of football teams in Bulgaria, contains football clubs that have recently been and/or still are members of the Bulgarian Football Union. The list consists of sports clubs that in recent years have been members of the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU). For a club to be a member of the BFU it has to endeavour in practising and/or developing football on the territory of Bulgaria. Thus, for a club to be a member of the BFU it is sufficient for it to have an active football youth academy, without sustaining any football team to participate in the tournaments organised by the BFU. Nevertheless, most members of the union do form a football team and almost all of them have a representative team for the mens football tournaments organised by the BFU. Some clubs in the list have undergone slight name changes for administrative or technical purposes but still have the same representative team. (For example Lokomotiv 1926 (Plovdiv) in the list throughout the years has been officially named NFC ...

Rhabdomyolysis is caused by severe injury to muscle cells. The condition is serious, and can lead to kidney failure if not properly treated. Basically, muscle cells break down and release byproducts in the bloodstream. One particular protein, myoglobin, is especially hard on the kidneys. Rhabdomyolysis usually occurs when your average couch-potato decides to head to the gym for the first time in months, pushes his-or herself to the brink of exhaustion, and doesnt drink enough water. So todays NYT story that said twenty-four athletes from McMinnville High School in Oregon were diagnosed at their local hospital with rhabdomyolysis caught my attention. The players began complaining about symptoms -- which typically include sore/swollen muscles and dark urine -- a few days after an intense preseason workout.
HealthDay News) -- Brain injuries among pro football players are in the headlines, but pro fighters often suffer damaging head injuries, too.. Now, research with boxers and mixed martial arts professionals suggests that combination MRI technology can help pinpoint which injuries might lead to brain damage.. In the boxing ring, as on the football field, recurring blows to the head can cause mild traumatic brain injury. Over time, this can lead to progressive brain disorders like chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and create problems with mood and movement.. A study published this week found that 110 of 111 brains of deceased National Football League players whose brains were autopsied showed signs of CTE.. Currently, the disease can only be diagnosed with an autopsy, but scientists are seeking to improve detection.. Previous studies have focused on the brain cells in gray matter or the fiber tracts in white matter, the researchers said.. For this new study, the researchers combined two MRI ...

By Lisa Rapaport(Reuters Health) - Brain scans may help identify athletes who suffer from brain damage after mild concussions, a small study of current and former professional football players suggests. Researchers examined results from whats known as positron emission tomography (PET) scans for four current and 10 former National Football League (NFL) players who had at least one previous concussion as well as for 16 similar men who werent athletes and had no history of concussions. They measured levels of a substance called translocator protein 18KDa (TSPO), which are thought to rise when the brain responds to traumatic injuries. Compared with men who werent in the NFL, the football players had higher levels of TSPO and greater changes in the brains white matter, the study found.
Aim: For junior-level Australian Rules Football there is a paucity of head injury and concussion surveillance data; thus, the primary aim was to document head injury and concussion incidence in participants aged 9-17 years with a secondary aim to identify the mechanism-of-injury.. Methods: A prospective cohort study in which a designated representative for each of the 41 teams recorded on a weekly basis the number of head injuries suspected of being a concussion, diagnosed concussions and the mechanism-of-injury during competition games over the course of a 12-game season. For analysis three groups were formed - number of Player-Seasons, Athlete-Exposures, head injury and concussion incidence per 1000 Athlete-Exposures - and were calculated. Narrative data was categorised.. Results: There was 13 reported head injuries resulting in seven concussions in the sample population (n = 976). The incidence rates for head injury and concussion were 1.1 (95% confidence interval: 0.5-1.7) and 0.59 (95% ...

On Sept. 25, 2005, a football match that few people will remember or even have heard of, took place in Amman, with hosts Jordan comfortably thrashing an overwhelmed Bahrain 9-0.. But the result mattered little. This was a football match with a difference for the beaten team; it was the first time that Bahrains national womens team - established in 2003 - had taken to a football field.. Womens football had taken its first, small step in the GCC. It was only a matter of time before Gulf nations would follow other more established football neighbors like Jordan and Egypt in developing the womens game.. But while Bahrain and UAE have followed in those footsteps, things havent exactly progressed elsewhere.. Fifteen years on, a revolution is taking place in womens football. But its a revolution that seems to be going under the radar in the majority of the GCC, Arab countries and the Middle East at large.. On June 25, 2020, the announcement that Australia and New Zealand will co-host the 2023 ...

Background Little is known about the short-term and long-term sequelae of concussion, and about when athletes who have sustained such injuries can safely return to play. Purpose To examine whether sports-related concussion increases the risk of subsequent injury in elite male football players. Study design Prospective cohort study. Methods Injuries were registered for 46 male elite football teams in 10 European countries in the 2001/ 2002-2011/ 2102 seasons. Two survival models were used to analyse whether concussion increased the subsequent risk of an injury in the first year. Results During the follow-up period, 66 players sustained concussions and 1599 players sustained other injuries. Compared with the risk following other injuries, concussion was associated with a progressively increased risk of a subsequent injury in the first year (0 to less than3 months, HR=1.56, 95% CI 1.09 to 2.23; 3 to less than6 months, HR=2.78, 95% CI 1.58 to 4.89; 6-12 months, HR=4.07, 95% CI 2.14 to 7.76). This study tested football players performance on the pitch against their performance on Twitter as explanations for Twitter popularity. Guided by network theory, social-identity theory, and basking in reflective glory and using data of all players of all teams in the Dutch premier league (Eredivisie), the multilevel models show that players with a Twitter account were more popular when they scored more goals, were non-Dutch, were on loan at another club, and were networkers actively following others on Twitter. The findings also show that context matters. Players under contract with a successful club receive an automatic bonus: Irrespective of their performance on the pitch or on Twitter, they automatically acquire more followers on Twitter. Players in general do not need to put a lot of effort into communicating on Twitter because sending tweets is unrelated to having more followers. Advertisers best options to reach larger and homogeneous audiences through football players are to choose ...
Blast exposure is associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI), neuropsychiatric symptoms, and long-term cognitive disability. We examined a case series of postmortem brains from U.S. military veterans exposed to blast and/or concussive injury. We found evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a tau protein-linked neurodegenerative disease, that was similar to the CTE neuropathology observed in young amateur American football players and a professional wrestler with histories of concussive injuries. We developed a blast neurotrauma mouse model that recapitulated CTE-linked neuropathology in wild-type C57BL/6 mice 2 weeks after exposure to a single blast. Blast-exposed mice demonstrated phosphorylated tauopathy, myelinated axonopathy, microvasculopathy, chronic neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration in the absence of macroscopic tissue damage or hemorrhage. Blast exposure induced persistent hippocampal-dependent learning and memory deficits that persisted for at least 1 month and ...

Its that time of year- the pigskins are flying, and weekends are spent eating delicious food and cheering on our favorite teams. The Boston Marathon bombings that shocked the world also shook communities that host entertainment venues, seeing firsthand as they did how easy it was to bring explosives into a crowd - and set them off. Since the April 15 attack, the National Football League has banned a number of carry-in items from all its arenas, including Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, offering up a new, strict policy that allows fans to bring belongings in small, clear plastic bags only. Managers of other performance and sports venues south of Boston are also taking a hard look at their policies, with some intent on making changes to improve security, and others saying their restrictions are already stringent.

Pennsylvania being a non-traditional hockey state has the drawback that hockey is not ingrained in the culture in such a way that people feel a social compulsion to attend games. That social compulsion exists for college football in Pennsylvania, but not for college hockey. It is much the opposite of New York, where people are drawn to the ten NCAA Division I programs in Upstate New York in droves, but college football is all but forgotten. The same is generally true of the Northeast. If UConn football plummets back into the abyss, I have little doubt that it will not have a following long after. Penn State football on the other hand, began the great tradition of the White Out during down times and continues to support a program valiantly even during these trying times for the University, program, and student-athletes. I do not want to disparage hockey fanbases in Pennsylvania, but I know that friends from Michigan, Minnesota, and New York quip often that the Penguins and Flyers would not have a ...
Professional football is one of the highest-satisfaction professions, as nine out of ten former athletes say they are glad they played the game. But fewer than half these men would want their children to participate in the sport, due to the frequency and severity of the injury. 90 percent of former players suffered at least one major injury during their careers, typically to their ankle, knee, hip, or foot.. To get back on the field faster, many injured football players wear orthotic braces over their injured joint. These devices are not the cumbersome braces they were just a few years ago. Instead, most braces are very lightweight yet also very strong. For example, ankle braces for running can fit snugly without inhibiting a runners motion, providing support and stabilization to the vulnerable joint, and helping to absorb the shock of the foots impact with the ground.. Researchers studying the link between football and chronic traumatic encephalopathy found that 99 percent of the brains donated by families of former NFL players showed signs of the neurodegenerative disease, according to a new study published Tuesday.

The objective of this study was to compare incidences and patterns of injury for female and male elite teams when playing football on artificial turf and grass. Twenty teams (15 male, 5 female) playing home matches on third-generation artificial turf were followed prospectively; their injury risk when playing on artificial turf pitches was compared with the risk when playing on grass. Individual exposure, injuries (time loss) and injury severity were recorded by the team medical staff. In total, 2105 injuries were recorded during 246 000 h of exposure to football. Seventy-one percent of the injuries were traumatic and 29% overuse injuries. There were no significant differences in the nature of overuse injuries recorded on artificial turf and grass for either men or women. The incidence (injuries/1000 player-hours) of acute (traumatic) injuries did not differ significantly between artificial turf and grass, for men (match 22.4 v 21.7; RR 1.0 (95% CI 0.9-1.2); training 3.5 v 3.5; RR 1.0 (0.8-1.2)) ...
We contrast the compensation ban on organ donation with the legal treatment of football, boxing, and other violent sports where both acute and chronic injuries to participants are common. Our claim is that there is a stronger case for compensating kidney donors than for compensating participants in violent sports. If this proposition is accepted, one implication is that there are only three logically consistent positions: allow compensation for both kidney donation and for violent sports; allow compensation for kidney donation but not for violent sports; or allow compensation for neither. Our current law and practice is perverse in endorsing a fourth regime, allowing compensation for violent sports but not kidney donation. We base our argument chiefly on the medical risk to participants, the consent process, social justice concerns, and social welfare considerations. The medical risks to a professional career in football, boxing, and other violent sports are much greater both in the near and long term
Harry Kellar, 52, of Cutler, Ohio, father of four, coach of his sons junior high football team, and machine maintenance planner at Kraton Polymers, felt fine. His older sons high school football team was hosting an ice cream social at the firehouse, and Kellar stopped by the blood pressure booth for a quick check.. A handful of doctors appointments and referrals later, Kellar found out that an artery in his heart was 100 percent blocked. He needed a coronary artery bypass. Kellar had watched his fathers long recovery from traditional bypass surgery, in which the breastbone is split and the ribcage separated in order to access the heart. He wanted to avoid that experience if at all possible.. Fortunately, just two hours away, the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute offers minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass. With the aid of a surgical robot, the entire procedure can be performed through a few small incisions between the ribs on the left side.. Most cardiac surgery is done through a ...
Well, the Washington Football Team got weird on Thanksgiving, dialing up the old Fumblerooski against the rival Dallas Cowboys and picking up a first down. The best part of the play is No. 41 J.D. The Washington Football Team dominated the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Before the game was a blowout, Washington tricked the Dallas defense with a fumblerooski. The play was inspired by a similar one depicted in the childrens film Little Giants, as head coach Ron Rivera revealed after the game. Visit Insiders homepage for more stories. During the second quarter Washington Offensive coordinator Scott Turner called a trick play that involved quarterback Alex Smith taking the snap, getting behind running back JD McKissic and then stealthily handing him the ball in what appeared to be a variation of the classic fumblerooski play made famous by Nebraska in the 80s. In American football, the fumblerooski is a trick play, famously used by the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers against the ...

Liz Cambage, a basketball person who plays for the Las Vegas Aces, has withdrawn from the Opals team for the Olympics, citing, inevitably, mental health reasons, after it was claimed she had misbehaved, by getting into a fight with a Nigerian basketball person during what is apparently known as a scrimmage, and that she had broken team quarantine rules.. There are rumours that Liz called the Nigerian player she had a punch on with a nigger. Or perhaps it was nigga, given that in the Australian way of speeching there is no difference in pronunciation between the two. Or perhaps she meant to say you bloody Nigerian! but it came out as Niggerian. Given her father is Nigerian it all sounds unlikely but certainly fun to speculate on. As for her breaking quarantine, it is rumoured that the purpose was for sexy romps with large male basketball persons.. Its not just women athletes, but big burly Australian Rules footballers also suffer from mental health issues rather a lot, and when a ...

I asked the coaching staff if it was a good idea. They said it would be really... ...

Justin Dube, RB Dover - After missing two games because of a concussion, Dube retuned to the Green Wave lineup against Exeter on Oct. 23, and also played yesterday vs. Keene. He answered any questions about his health by taking his first carry of the game against the Blue Hawks and running 65 yards from the Dover 20 to the Exeter 15 yard line. His return is also good news for the Dover basketball team, which he is a starting forward on. However, if Dube suffers one more concussion, he will not only be out for the rest of the football season, but he will miss the entire basketball season as well. Green Wave faithful, cross your fingers! Dover has now been eliminated from the D-II playoff picture, but it should be interesting to see if Dube plays in their Thanksgiving game against Portsmouth. Im sure he would like to play, and hopefully end his high school football career with a win, but I dont think I would play and risk getting another concussion and miss the entire basketball season ...
Iraq Fact of the Day In a stunning upset victory, the Iraq national football team defeated Saudi Arabia and earned a trip to the 2004 Olympic Summer games in Athens. The 3 to 1 victory marks the first time in Iraqs history that its football team will compete in the Olympics. This means Iraq is on the right path, said a tearful Hawar Mulla Mohammed moments after the game. He scored the teams go-ahead -- and eventually winning -- goal of the game. Our entire country deserves this incredible win, he said. This achievement means that Iraq will send about 30 athletes to the Summer games for a seven-fold increase from just four years ago.
