Since Rugby Football Union became professional in 1995 and female rugby has become a growing sport, the demand of greater knowledge about the requirements of the game and the characteristics of the players has increased (Duthie et al., 2003). The aim of the present study is to establish whether there is a significant difference in somatotype between elite and non-elite female Rugby Union players. Ten anthropometric variables of thirty female rugby union players, elite (n=15) and non-elite (n=15) playing standards, were recorded and assessed according to the Heath-Carter method of somatotyping (1990). Descriptive statistics were presented on general characteristics of female rugby union players, and an independent t-test was used to determine whether there were any statistically significant differences (p,0.05) between somatotype as a whole and separate components (endomorph, mesomorph and ectomorph) between elite and non-elite female rugby union players. The mean somatotype for the elite ...

N2 - Background: Novel research surrounding anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is necessary because ACL injury rates have remained unchanged for several decades. An area of ACL risk mitigation which has not been well researched relates to vertical stiffness. The relationship between increased vertical stiffness and increased ground reaction force suggests that vertical stiffness may be related to ACL injury risk. However, given that increased dynamic knee joint stability has been shown to be associated with vertical stiffness, it is possible that modification of vertical stiffness could help to protect against injury. We aimed to determine whether vertical stiffness is related to measures known to load, or ...
Football ranks as one of the most popular sports in the United States, and the National Football League (NFL) stands out as the premier stage for elite players and coaches. Consisting of 32 franchises in major cities throughout the country, the NFL brings in massive revenue with its hard hitting and highly skilled brand of football. Of course, a significant amount of that revenue goes to paying the players on each team. Salaries vary greatly for rookies starting their first year in the league, with some stars collecting huge sums while other new players pull in much more modest earnings.. Dan Feeney has tried to follow Slauson example. A third round rookie, Feeney is one of several Chargers linemen fighting to fit into an open position up front. After fellow rookie Forrest Lamp tore his ACL in camp, leaving right guard up for grabs, Feeney has cycled back and forth from that spot to second team center. So far, he kept his head down. In his first training camp, he knows he can force his way into ...
A new study has found that many high school football players are not concerned about the long-term effects of concussions and dont report their own concussion symptoms.
Im flipping between four different games on college footballs biggest weekend, and instead of basking in the intensity of some of sports most intense rivalries, Im sad. No, Im not sad because the Biting Irish are ranked number one. I know that will last only until some SEC team gives Touchdown Jesus a good, swift redneck kick in the balls in the National Championship Game. Im sad because Im reminded that my favorite aspect of college sports is going to end in 2014. Thats the year when the four-team college football playoff format goes into effect, thereby ending what I love most about college football: all the pissing and moaning about the season-ending rankings by too-old-to-care-this-much assbags who take their college football way too seriously.. Nothing in sports gives me more pleasure - or boosts my self-esteem more - than listening to grown ass adults scream about the epic unfairness of a ranking system that keeps their favorite college football team from its rightful place in the ...
The pre- teens less than age 12 playing American football leads to symptoms of cognitive, behavioral and mood disorders.. The Researchers study at the Boston University School of Medicine talks on the schools website examined brain injuries for pre-teens playing American football, which includes chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). 246 American football players deceased. out of which, 211 were diagnosed with CTE after death.. "When they start to play football in early age, the earlier the symptoms began," says Michael Alosco, an assistant professor of neurology, Boston University School of Medicine and lead author on the study. This is published on Monday in the Annals of Neurology.. Pre-teens starting to play American football at 12 or even earlier than 12 mostly shows the signs of brain injury issues for 13 years on an average before those who start playing the sport after age 12.. Downloadable! This paper provides an empirical examination of the economic impact of spectator sports on local economies. Confirming the results of other ex post analyses of sports in general, this paper finds no statistically significant evidence that college football games in particular contribute positively to a hosts economy. Our analysis from 1970-2004 of 63 metropolitan areas that play host to big-time college football programs finds that neither the number of home games played, the winning percentage of the local team, nor winning a national championship has a discernable impact on either employment or personal income in the cities where the teams play. While successful college football teams may bring fame to their alma mater, fortune appears to be a bit more elusive.

Subjects with dark eye colour are thought to perform better on reactive tasks in comparison to light-eyed subjects, whereas light-eyed subjects show enhanced performance over dark-eyed subjects on self-paced activities. This study examined reaction time using unrestricted and peripheral vision and success at the self-paced activity of goal kicking in 59 elite male Rugby League players. Subjects with dark eye colour did not react significantly faster than the light-eyed subjects when tested using unrestricted vision or peripheral vision. Examination of the self-paced activity of goal kicking showed that the percentage success rate was not significantly higher in the light-eyed group than the dark-eyed group. In conclusion, there was no significant difference in reaction time to a visual stimulus or success in goal kicking between dark- and light-eyed Rugby League players.

Scribed by Evan Harms. American Footballs first album, American Football, has become the epitome of midwestern indie rock over the last 10 to 15 years. The widely-revered record combines layers of suspended guitar with jazz-tinted trumpet melodies against a backdrop of forlorn wistfulness and post-adolescent emotivity.. After the bands brief and relatively small existence centered in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, frontman Mike Kinsella began making music as Owen, starting musically and thematically where American Football left off. Though it lacks some of the musical intricacies of American Football, the Owen catalog could easily pass as the former. Which is why its so weird that people are exploding with enjoyment at the fact that the new American Football is the bands first new material since 1999. Many of these fans would have likely enjoyed Owen material a great deal, had they actually chosen to majorly invest themselves in related music.. This means that American Football has great power ...
The Rugby Injury and Performance Project (RIPP) is a prospective cohort study by a multidisciplinary research group. Rugby injuries constitute an important area for research because rugby union is New Zealands national sport and because of the considerable cost of all sports injury acknowledged by the Accident Rehabilitation and Compensation Insurance Corporation (ACC). The initial phase of data collection in the RIPP involved a pre-season questionnaire which, among other things, sought to establish variables relating to the past injury experience of players. The influence of previous injury, the use of safety equipment and the availability and significance of medical advice were among the variables identified by individual questionnaires. This paper analyses the responses to pre-season questions about injury experience in the previous 12 months. In so doing, it identifies baseline data which will be used to address a possible relationship between past injury experience and the prediction of ...

Rugby football originated at the English school of Rugby in the 19th century. There are two main varieties: rugby union and rugby league. The two varieties have different rules and different numbers of players; rugby union has 15 players a side (with a 7-a-side variant), and rugby league has 13 players a side (with 7-a-side and 9-a-side variants).. According to legend, a boy named William Webb Ellis at the Rugby School decided to pick the ball up and run with it during a football match in 1823, thus creating the rugby-style of football, though most historians doubt the authenticity of the story and consider it to be an origin myth. In any case, by 1870, the sport would gain enough popularity to lead the various clubs and schools to form the Rugby Football Union (RFU) (hence the name rugby union) to serve as the governing body and standardise the set of rules for the sport. The RFU required all players to be amateurs, which meant that for the most part, only the aristocracy could afford the time ...

LFP FF RFP LFF CHF RFF LW Ru RW C RR Ro LBF CHB RBF LBP FB RBP In the sport of Australian rules football, each of the eighteen players in a team is assigned to a particular named position on the field of play. These positions describe both the players main role and by implication their location on the ground. As the game has evolved, tactics and team formations have changed, and the names of the positions and the duties involved have evolved too. In total there are 18 positions in Australian rules football, not including 4 (sometimes 6 - 8) interchange players who may come onto the ground at any time during play to replace another player. The fluid nature of the modern game means the positions in football are not as formally defined as in sports such as rugby or American football. Even so, most players will play in a limited range of positions throughout their career, as each position requires a particular set of skills. Footballers who are able to play comfortably in numerous positions are ...

Sports-related MTBI is a significant public health problem in USA. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1.6-3.8 million MTBI occur in sports and recreational activities annually. There are ,800 000 outpatient visits and 1.2 million emergency department visits for MTBI. The annual incidence of MTBI is as high as 600/100 000 in USA including unreported cases.12. In a study of 5-23-year-old American football players, the major source of MTBI were football practices. Among all age groups, falls are the leading cause of MTBI (35.2%) with 50.2% in children ≤14 years, compared with 60.7% among adults aged ≥65 years.13 Headache predicts abnormal computerised tomography results. Among paediatric patients with MTBI, 56% clinically improved and were discharged the following day.14. Even at the level of the American National Football League (NFL) players, only 9.3% of the NFL players experienced LOC as a result of severe head impacts. Headaches were observed in 55% of NFL ...
by Steven H. Miles, MD and Shailendra Prasad, MD, MPH. This is a special pre-print posting of an editorial scheduled for the January 2016 issue of the American Journal of Bioethics. Health professionals should call for ending public school tackle football programs. We disagree with the perspective and the argument of a recent report by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that supports the current organization of reforms of youth tackle football.. About 1.1 million students play on junior and high school football teams. Another three million play in non-school programs. Youth football is slowly dying. The number of players on junior and high school football teams has fallen 2.4% over the last 5 years. Pop Warner Football, the largest non-school based program has seen its number of student athletes fall 9.5% (23,612 athletes) from 2010 to 2012. Data is not available for other youth leagues.. We agree with the AAP that the rare deaths (seven through October 2015) or catastrophic neck injuries ...

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) may be more prevalent among football players than feared, according to a new study published in JAMA.. Researchers examined the brains of 202 deceased football players who donated their brains for research. Overall, CTE was diagnosed in 177 players - or 87 percent of those studied. That percentage increased significantly, however, among National Football League players: 110 of the 111 NFL players had CTE, or 99 percent of the donated brains studied.. CTE is a progressive neurodegenerative syndrome associated with repetitive head trauma. It was discovered in 2002 by forensic pathologist Bennet Omalu, MD. While working in the county coroners office in Pittsburgh, Omalu performed an autopsy of "Iron Mike" Webster, the legendary Pittsburgh Steelers lineman who died at age 50. A Hall-of-Famer, Webster was known for his durability, never missing a game during a stretch between 1975 and 1986. He spent the last decades of his life struggling with dementia, ...
The death of a high school football quarterback in New Jersey has been attributed to a lacerated spleen he suffered during a game Friday night.
This past week there was discussion of the number of high school football players that die annually while playing football (at least 5). But the bigger risk - because it involves so many players - is the damage to brains that occurs from concussions and from just being hit in football. The response from football enthusiasts is that there are safeguards now - that football players dont play after a concussion until they "heal" (show no obvious symptoms). But do they really heal? And much of the damage is from repeated hits, without having a concussion (sub-concussive blows or hits), what about the damage from that?. This study found that repeated head hits in football can cause changes in brain chemistry and metabolism, even in high school players not diagnosed with concussions. And even after the lengthy off-season (somewhere between two and five months after the season has ended)-the majority of players are still showing that they had not fully recovered. The researchers also made it clear ...

Vitamin D insufficiency is common in athletes and may lower physical performance. Many cross-sectional studies associate vitamin D status with physical performance in athletes; however, there have been few prospective randomized controlled trials with adequate statistical power to test this relationship, and none in the southern hemisphere. Thus, a prospective double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled intervention trial was conducted involving 57 professional rugby union players in New Zealand. Participants were randomized to receive 50,000 IU of cholecalciferol (equivalent to 3,570 IU/day) or placebo once every two weeks over 11-12 weeks. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations and physical performance were measured at baseline, weeks 5-6, and weeks 11-12. Mean (SD) serum 25(OH)D concentrations for all participants at baseline was 94 (18) nmol/L, with all players above 50 nmol/L. Vitamin D supplementation significantly increased serum 25(OH)D concentrations compared to placebo, with a 32 nmol/L ...

Description: Previous research has examined factors that predispose collegiate football players to injury (e.g., Petrie, 1993a, 1993b) as well as factors that influence athletes psychological adjustment to being injured (e.g., Brewer, 1993; Leddy, Lambert, & Ogles, 1994). Despite the reports of the NCAA Injury Surveillance System that the greatest number of football injuries occur during the spring preseason (NCAA, 1997), studies have only examined injury during the regular season. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the antecedents and consequences of injury in collegiate football players during the spring preseason and across the regular competitive season. Specifically, life stress, social support, competitive trait anxiety, athletic identity, coping style, and preinjury mood state was measured to determine their relationship with the occurrence of injury and with postinjury emotional responses in athletes who sustain an injury at some point during either the spring preseason ...

This is not your fathers high school football game.. Its been a tumultuous several years as the climate surrounding this areas most popular sport is enduring potentially damaging winds.. Last winters death of former San Diego Chargers All-Pro linebacker Junior Seau and subsequent belief that concussions played a part in leading him to suicide horrifies parents of young football players.. A crashing economy is forcing school districts to tighten belts and squeeze everything they can into shrinking budgets, putting the cost of extra-curricular activities on life support. And a social media network that is growing faster than the speed of light, it seems, is putting coaches, many of whom are very guarded against bulletin board material, on high alert as players banter on Facebook and Twitter. All are new issues and concerns for coaches, players and school administrators. The impact reaches as far down the chain to the youth levels.. This summer, I took a purely unscientific look at the state of ...
Recent studies show former football athletes, especially football linemen, to be at increased cardiovascular disease risk. However, the lipid profiles of American NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players in response to sport participation are currently unknown. PURPOSE: To quantify the effects of participation in fall preseason football training camp on the blood lipid profiles in NCAA FBS athletes. METHODS: Seated venous blood samples were drawn in the morning after an overnight fast from 51 football players (age = 20 ± 2 yr, weight = 232.8 ± 40.8 lb, height = 73.9 ± 2.6 in) and analyzed for total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), HDL-cholesterol (HLD-C), and triglyceride (TG). Samples were obtained on two separate occasions corresponding to the beginning of fall preseason football camp, and again 16 days later near the end. Data were analyzed by paired t-test. RESULTS: See table, values are means ± SD, * = p ≤ 0.001. Measurement Time Lipid and Lipoprotein Concentrations

Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania In 1987, National Football League players went on strike. As a response, NFL teams scrambled to fill their rosters with "replacement players," individuals who had some experience with college or professional football, but who werent part of NFL rosters that year. The replacement players themselves became a footnote in sports history. It turns out these players may actually play a critical role in football today - by helping us understand how playing in the NFL affects long-term health. In our recent study, published in JAMA, we compared the life expectancies of professional NFL players who debuted between 1982 and 1992 to the life expectancies of replacement players from the 1987 strike. ...
In many ways, the Mid-American Conference has little in common with Power Five leagues that first come to mind when fans think of major college football.. There are no 75,000-seat stadiums in the MAC. Million-dollar per year coaches are rare. In a typical season, NFL scouts might find one or two potential first-round draft picks playing at the 12 MAC schools that dot the Midwest. The MACs biggest games - #MACtion, if you will - are often played on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Its television deal with ESPN pays per year only a few million more than the $9 million Clemson pays coach Dabo Swinney.. Still, the MAC is one of 10 conferences that competes in the NCAAs highest level of football, and Saturday it became the first of those to surrender to the coronavirus pandemic and cancel the fall sports season.. So is the MAC an anomaly, done in by its small budgets or is this a dire sign of things to come in college football?. "I wont try to judge what other folks are doing," MAC Commissioner Jon ...

Football is a rough, full-contact sport. The nature of the sport leaves the whole body at risk for injury. Despite the advancements in the equipment used (helmets, pads, braces, supports) and the combination of the size of the players, the speed of play, and the physical nature of the game, injuries are a quite common part of the game.. Sprains and strains are the most common types of football injuries. Quick and proper diagnosis of these injuries leads to early treatment which is best accomplished by the "R.I.C.E." method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).. Fractures are another common football injury accounting for one quarter of all serious football injuries (i.e. injuries that require hospital care), and commonly include the fingers, wrists, and legs.. Concussions are a prevalent injury in football due to the full contact nature of the sport. Any unusual symptoms that arise following a hit should be examined by a medical professional as soon as possible.. ...

The body size of American football players has changed over time. The known health implications of overweight and obesity make it important for football players to understand how to increase size without increasing body fat. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of an increased emphasis on training and nutrition on the body composition of college football players. The sample included 68 football players. Paired t-tests were performed to compare percent fat and body mass index (BMI) at three points in time, all of which were during the off-season. A significant decrease in percent fat and BMI was found from January of 2013 to May of 2013 and a non-significant increase in percent fat and BMI was found from May of 2013 to August of 2013. A significant decrease in percent fat and BMI was found for the duration of the data collection period, or between January of 2013 and August of 2013. Results suggest that increasing the emphasis on training and nutrition among college football players leads

For the first time, UCLA researchers have used a brain-imaging tool to identify the abnormal tau proteins associated with sports concussion in five retired National Football League players who are still living. Previously, confirmation of the presence of this protein could only be established by an autopsy. Follow-up studies will help determine the impact and usefulness of identifying these proteins early.
Whenever someone asks me the name of my football team, I feel a surge of pride and mild apprehension as I foresee the expression of surprise and confusion on their face.. Its not a pun, really. Snatch doesnt even rhyme with Spurs. It also doesnt roll off the tongue like the second contender (West Hampurse) does. I think the unapologetic lewdness of this makes the name even better.. Yes, my football team is called Tottenham Hotsnatch, but thats not even the best thing about it. Tottenham Hotsnatch was formed in winter 2014 during a brainstorm to find more reasons to drink alcohol. Someone suggested starting a football team and, despite the fact that literally none of us had ever played football before, we were all on board.. At the beginning there were 11 snatches. Our friend Theo heroically volunteered to manage our first training session, and on a cold Monday night in Shadwell, the first Tottenham Hotsnatch training session began.. It was chaos. We were all absolute shit. Our hand-eye ...
There have been more and more cases confirming that repeated hits to the head have lifelong consequences for professional football players, but a new study by Orlando Health in collaboration with the Concussion Neuroimaging Consortium finds evidence of lasting effects from head injuries at a much younger age than expected. The study tested biomarkers in the blood called microRNAs and found that the college football players had elevated levels of these biomarkers that indicate concussions before the season even started.

Colleges and high schools may face the prospect of no - or very expensive - insurance coverage for football-related concussion risks, which could endanger all but the wealthiest programs, experts say.. Expected policy exclusions could leave college and high school teams without critical coverage if former players claim long-lasting injuries from concussions suffered while they were players, according to experts.. In addition, given the issues long-tail nature, insurers may have to worry about policies they have written in the past, even if they provide exclusions in their policies going forward.. On the professional level, the National Football League reached a major settlement in 2015 with former players who sued the league after experiencing head trauma during their football careers that resulted in brain injuries. Meanwhile, coverage litigation stemming from a putative class action lawsuit filed by a former college football player who says he suffers from memory loss and other symptoms could ...

By Paul LaDuke, ATC. August in the United States is a hallowed month to many Americans as it brings the beginning of another football season. Having played football at my high school in Colorado and during my (very small) college career in Wisconsin, I have always loved the start of football season because soon follow crisp autumn evenings, leaves changing color (at least in northern climates), marching bands adding atmosphere and tradition, communities bonding over their teams and high school athletes learning about real life outside the traditional classroom. There is nothing more American than football. Visit most rural towns on a fall, Friday night and the community is likely to be at the local high school game. Personally, I love it!. We all know football is a collision sport with a high risk of pain and injury. I look back at my own time playing football and the injuries I suffered and wonder if it was worth it. My opinion is yes, it was worth it because life is a collision sport too. Life ...

On September 12, 2007, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) was notified of three players on a Brooklyn high school football team with culture-confirmed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs). During August 19--24, the team had attended a preseason football training camp, where all 59 players on the team lived together in the school gymnasium. An investigation by DOHMH revealed four culture-confirmed and two suspected cases of MRSA among 51 players interviewed (11.8% attack rate). Of the six cases, three involved abscesses that required incision and drainage. The risk for MRSA infection was higher among those who shared towels during the training camp than among those who did not (relative risk [RR] = 8.2). In addition, the six players with MRSA infections had a mean body mass index (BMI) that was significantly higher than the mean for those who were not infected. Multivariable logistic modeling determined that ...

... is a contact team sport that originated in England and is now played in over 100 countries, including Australia. Amateur rugby can be played from a junior level (primary school age). In Australia, elite rugby has three tiers including: International Rugby (Wallabies), Super Rugby and the National Rugby Championship (NRC).. A match consists two 40-minute halves with a 10-minute half time break.. A rugby union team consists of 15 players, with 8 forwards and 7 backs. Forwards are involved in lineouts, mauls, rucks and scrums and are typically larger in stature, depending on greater body mass, height, strength and power. Backs are involved in more running relying on agility, speed and acceleration and as such are typically smaller, leaner and lighter than forwards. Although backs tend to run further distances than forwards, forwards have more ...

What is the optimal level of vitamin D? Doctors from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, said that the medical community increasingly agrees that the optimal level for vitamin D is at least 30 to 32 nanograms per milliliter of blood (ng/mL). Using that measure, three in four U.S. adults are likely low, and to reach the correct level, should take at least 1,000 IU of vitamin D3-the most beneficial form-per day.. Researchers in one study measured vitamin D levels in 89 National Football League players during training camp and found 81 percent were abnormally low. Twenty-seven were deficient, with levels less than 20 ng/mL; and 45 were low, with 20 to 31.9 ng/mL. Only 17 players had at least 32 ng/mL of vitamin D.. Players with muscle injuries who had missed at least one practice or game in the prior season had much lower levels of vitamin D than non-injured players. This was the only significant difference between them, doctors said. While low levels of vitamin D may not have caused the ...

Head impact exposure in practice can be reduced by implementing rules, modifying practice structure, and educating coaches and leagues on methods to reduce concussion risk, but our understanding of HIE within specific practice drills and activities has so far been limited.5,9,11,14,19,31,32,39 The physiological thresholds for adverse effects from repetitive and/or concussive head impacts are not well understood; however, by quantifying HIE in football practice drills, this study is an important step in an evidence-based approach to modifying rules and practice structure to reduce HIE and head injury risk. In addition, because of the increasing numbers of concussions being evaluated by clinicians and the growing concern over the harmful effects of subconcussive impacts, clinicians must become better informed regarding the potential effects of sport-related activity (e.g., practice drills) on their patients health. Results from this study demonstrate significant variability in HIE among youth ...

These findings suggest that drafting strategy could be improved by focusing more on measures that are predictive of NFL performance. We explore the potential to improve drafting strategy further by also factoring the salary cost of drafted players into our prediction models.. Our cost analysis suggests that a primarily college performance measures (especially college receptions and the BCS college indicator) with a couple combine measures (especially Broad Jump) are the best predictors of high value tight ends. We also find that current NFL draft strategies are efficiently utilize size measures (BMI, Height, Weight), as these measures were predictive of NFL draft order and NFL performance, but were not selected as predictive of NFL performance per cost This shows that while size is beneficial, NFL teams are aware of this and draft larger tight ends earlier, as is appropriate. We also examined an alternative outcome variable, "Approximate Value (AV)", and found similar results with this outcome ...
