J. Castenmiller and C.E. West Jacqueline Castenmiller is Research Associate and Clive E. West is Associate Professor at Wageningen Agricultural University, Department of Human Nutrition, Wageningen, the Netherlands. Information on the composition of foods is essential for any nutrition programme, whether the diets concerned are for healthy individuals or for those suffering from illness. In addition, there is a growing demand for high-quality and compatible food composition data to meet the needs of research on the relationship between diet and disease, Because of the heightened interest in the nutritional quality of foods, exporting countries and the food industry find that data on the nutritional composition of foods are essential. Thus, food composition data must meet the needs of government agencies, nutrition scientists, health and agriculture professionals, policy-makers and planners, food producers, processors and retailers, and consumers. In developed countries considerable effort has ...

Adequate nutrition is one of the pillars of public health. Before developing and implementing effective intervention programmes to improve nutrition at the population level, it is important to know the nutritional situation of the target group. The estimation of nutrient intake from food consumption requires reliable data on food composition. These data are also the fundamentals of food-based dietary guidelines for healthy nutrition, containing the necessary information on food sources for different nutrients. Furthermore, food composition tables can provide information on chemical forms of nutrients and the presence and amounts of interacting components, and thus provide information on their bioavailability. For some nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin E and niacin, the concept of equivalence has been introduced to account for differences in the availability and biological activity of different chemical forms. Although most food composition tables focus on energy, macro- and micronutrients, interest
These data suggest that (1) glutamine content can be estimated from gene sequencing methods and (2) there is a reasonably wide variation in energy-adjusted glutamine intake, allowing for exploration of glutamine consumption and disease.
Food composition data are essential for calculating nutrient intake from consumption data in different European countries and age groups. The food composition database gives information on the amount of vitamins and minerals contained in different foods.

Inherited genetic material - deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA for short - is unique to every living thing and can therefore be utilised like a fingerprint for identification purposes. DNA analysis has thus become an indispensable tool within food safety, and in the real-time testing of both raw materials and finished products. The -established method for confirmation of specified target DNA in a sample is the polymerase chain reaction (PCR).In recent years, however, several more modern and simpler methods have started to appear, with serious potential to replace conventional PCR in certain fields while presenting at least an interesting alternative in many other areas of application. Isothermal- amplification of DNA has ushered in a new generation of tests that are not only considerably faster than traditional PCR but potentially offer the option of being deploy-able outside a laboratory environment. ...

A greater adherence to the traditional Mediterranean (MED) diet is associated with a reduced risk of developing chronic diseases. This dietary pattern is based on higher consumption of plant products that are rich in flavonoids. We compared the total flavonoid dietary intakes, their food sources and various lifestyle factors between MED and non-MED countries participating in the EPIC study. Flavonoid intakes and their food sources for 35 628 subjects, aged 35-74 years and recruited between 1992 and 2000, in twenty-six study centres were estimated using standardised 24 h dietary recall software (EPIC-Soft (R)). An ad hoc food composition database on flavonoids was compiled using analytical data from the United States Department of Agriculture and Phenol-Explorer databases. Moreover, it was expanded to include using recipes, estimations of missing values and flavonoid retention factors. No significant differences in total flavonoid mean intake between non-MED countries (373.7 mg/d) and MED ...
Iodine food composition data of Norwegian foods have been sparse and knowledge about different dietary iodine sources limited. We compiled a comprehensive iodine food composition database and estimated dietary iodine intake among adults in the latest Norwegian national dietary survey (Norkost 3). The iodine content of food and beverages were compiled using international guidelines and standards. Iodine content of 3259 food items were compiled, including analytical values, values from other food composition databases, estimated values, and values that were based on recipes. Estimated iodine intake in the Norkost 3 population ranged from 15 to 1462 µg/day. Men had significantly higher intake of iodine than women (p < 0.001). The proportion of men and women with estimated iodine intake below average requirement was 19% and 33%, respectively. In young women, 46% had estimated iodine intakes below average requirement and a high probability of inadequate iodine intake. Several dietary sources
In the last decade, there has been an increased interest in anthocyanin-based research with a growing need to accurately measure anthocyanin intake in population studies. Anthocyanin content in foods is known to vary across regions due to climate, soil content and harvesting practices. To accurately measure nutrient intake in population studies, food composition databases tailored to specific regions need to be developed. The aim of this study was to describe the first stage development of an Australian anthocyanin food composition database focusing on fruit and vegetables. A systematic literature search found analytical data on the anthocyanin content of five fruits and two vegetables (purple dragon carrot and red cabbage) out of the total plant-based food category (58 individual fruits and 62 vegetables). In addition, values were found for ten Australian native fruits, of which 9 are not included in the Australian database. Development of an anthocyanin food composition database relies on the

Most bottled salad dressings contain MSG, trans-fatty acids and/or contain lots of sugar, corn syrup or other refined sugars instead, none of which are good for your health.. MSG in Salad Dressings. Store bought salad dressings almost always contain MSG, which is a brain neurotoxin. MSG has not only been shown to cause neurological and other problems, and that is reason enough to stay away from it, but in addition, MSG seems to make you fat! In lab experiments, scientists actually induce obesity in lab animals by feeding them MSG! Almost all processed and packaged foods including salad dressings contain MSG, even if it is not clearly indicated on the label. In fact, salad dressings, soups and sauces often have rather high amounts of it. So check your labels for MSG and monosodium glutamate, as well as natural flavors, textured and hydrolyzed protein, and autolyzed yeast, which almost always contain MSG.. Trans-Fatty Acids in Salad Dressings. Salad dressings that are not fat-free often contain ...

Determination of the endogenous loss of fat (ELF) is used to adjust for the estimation of true total tract digestibility (TTTD) of fat in diets and ingredients. Any factor which affected ELF may further affect the digestibility of fat, including sources and concentrations of fat and fiber in the diet. There are some reports of determining the ELF using regression methods based on different levels of fat intake, while reports on effects of dietary fiber content and different fiber-rich ingredients in pig diets on ELF are very limited. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effects of dietary fiber content and different fiber-rich ingredients on endogenous losses of fat and fatty acids at the end of ileum and throughout the entire intestinal tract in growing pigs. In Exp. 1, the effect of fiber content on endogenous loss of fat was determined using six growing pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire; 27.6 ± 2.4 kg), fitted with a T-cannula at the end of ileum. The experimental design
The Optimised Uncertainty (OU) methodology has been developed to optimise multi-analyte situations. It has then been applied to a retail survey of infant food for trace elements, classifying the food as compliant or non-compliant with the regulatory thresholds or specification limits that are appropriate for each element. The large-scale survey of infant foods was successfully adapted to allow the estimation of uncertainties, from both primary sampling and chemical analysis, for elemental concentrations in infant formula (milk) and wet meals. The analytes included in this investigation comprised both contaminants (Pb and Cd) and elements essential for child development (Zn and Cu). Optimisation of the measurement process for a `single analyte¿ demonstrated the potential financial benefits of optimising future surveys for a false compliance scenario. Uncertainty estimates for the measurement of elemental concentrations in infant formula were dominated by uncertainty from the analytical method. ...

The reduction of free or added sugar intake (sugars added to food and drinks as a sweetener) is almost universally recommended to reduce the risk of obesity-related diseases and dental caries. The World Health Organisation recommends intakes of free sugars of less than 10% of energy intake. However, estimating and monitoring intakes at the population level is challenging because free sugars cannot be analytically distinguished from naturally occurring sugars and most national food composition databases do not include data on free or added sugars. We developed free and added sugar estimates for the New Zealand (NZ) food composition database (FOODfiles 2010) by adapting a method developed for Australia. We reanalyzed the 24 h recall dietary data collected for 4721 adults aged 15 years and over participating in the nationally representative 2008/09 New Zealand Adult Nutrition Survey to estimate free and added sugar intakes. The median estimated intake of free and added sugars was 57 and 49 g/day

In 1990, the widow and children of George Demoulas (including his son, Arthur S. Demoulas) sued Mike Demoulas, alleging that they had been defrauded out of their shares in the company. They claimed they had trusted Mike to take care of the family after Georges death and that he exploited this trust in order to have them sell all of Georges real estate and 84% of his shares in DeMoulas Super Markets to members of his own family for pennies on the dollar.[4] Mike Demoulas contended that his brothers heirs had willingly sold their shares in the company because they wanted money and their stock in DeMoulas did not pay dividends. According to Mike Demoulas, Georges widow, Evanthea, asked him to sell her shares so she could have money to raise her children, her son Evan sold his shares so he could begin an auto racing career in Europe, and her two daughters, Diana and Fotene, sold their shares after they saw how much money their brother received. However, once the company began paying dividends in ...

The PCTR method requires an analyte pure component spectrum and non-analyte spectra. As a food analysis example, synchronous fluorescence spectra of ...
Updated: 17 November 2008 The Microsoft Association algorithm is an association algorithm provided by Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services (SSAS) that is useful for recommendation engines. A recommendation engine recommends products to customers based on items they have already bought, or in which they have indicated an interest. The Microsoft Association algorithm is also useful for market basket analysis. For more information about market basket analysis, see Lesson 4: Building the Market Basket Scenario in the Data Mining Tutorial.. Association models are built on datasets that contain identifiers both for individual cases and for the items that the cases contain. A group of items in a case is called an itemset. An association model is made up of a series of itemsets and the rules that describe how those items are grouped together within the cases. The rules that the algorithm identifies can be used to predict a customers likely future purchases, based on the items that already exist ...

Weve known that being overweight and obese are important risk factors for type 2 diabetes, but, until recently, not much attention has been paid to the role of specific foods. I discuss this issue in my video, Why Is Meat a Risk Factor for Diabetes?. A 2013 meta-analysis of all the cohorts looking at the connection between meat and diabetes found a significantly higher risk associated with total meat consumption--especially consumption of processed meat, particularly poultry. But why? Theres a whole list of potential culprits in meat: saturated fat, animal fat, trans fats naturally found in meat, cholesterol, or animal protein. It could be the heme iron found in meat, which can lead to free radicals and iron-induced oxidative stress that may lead to chronic inflammation and type 2 diabetes, or advanced glycation end (AGE) products, which promote oxidative stress and inflammation. Food analyses show that the highest levels of these so-called glycotoxins are found in meat-particularly roasted, ...

Available:http:www.sciencedirect//doi:10.1016/j.snb.2007.10.046 Interpretive Summary: Tetracycline (TC) is a significant antibiotic extensively used in human and veterinary medicine. For clinical, environmental and food analyses, it is highly desirable to perform field analyses to obtain immediate results rather than merely to collect the samples and transport them to the laboratories. Europium-sensitized luminescence (ESL) is a highly sensitive and selective analytical technique for TC analysis. However, portable ESL instruments are not commercially available. An ultraviolet light emitting diode (UVLED) was used in this laboratory to develop a portable TC analyzer based on ESL. The optical, hardware and software design of this analyzer is discussed in detail in this manuscript. The instrument operation and data processing are controlled by a ...
The fields of application are manifold: biology, mineralogy, antiques, restoration, quality food analysis, checking bills. Theres a range of applications that could make red-hot the minds of those who have always dreamed of living an adventure as a forensic agent: this is the identification of organic liquids stains or traces. In dermatology this lamp is suitable to detect fungal infections or skin diseases such as vitiligo. In the foodindustry we can detect the occurrence of fungus that affect the quality of food. In microbiology the UV light makes fluorescent bacteria. In the field of paintings restoration Woods light is useful to find out the original colors that the age has deteriorated. We can also define if a painting has undergone previous restorations. Theres also a recreational use in clubs, amusement parks and tourist attractions in order to create fluorescence effects enhancing the white color of eyes, teeth and clothes (for Halloween if you wear a skeleton dressed the effect will ...

Immunodiagnostic tests are analytical methods that use antibodies as reagents whose results are used to aid diagnosis and are widely used in many scientific disciplines and in many different ways. Perhaps the most widespread and obvious use is in clinical applications, but immunodiagnostic tests are also used in other fields such as forensic science and environmental and food analysis. The different types of test range from simple manual methods to fully automated systems with sophisticated integrated detection. Immunodiagnostics: A Practical Approach starts off by explaining the principles and development of immunodiagnostic tests, specifically the use of radioisotopes as tracers. Chapter 2 explains the use of solid-phase supports to bind immunoreagents. Enzymes are widely used as labels in immunoassays and their use with colourimetric, fluorimetric, and chemiluminescent detection systems is described. The use of enzymes as labels reflects the move away from radioisotopes and one of the most ...

Fluorescence polarization (FP) is sensitive to changes in molecular size and, therefore, assays that make use of molecular interactions are particularly useful. FP immunoassays, which rely on antibody-antigen interactions are widely used for clinical analysis, food analysis, and environmental monitoring. Development of other FP techniques, such as receptor-ligand and peptide-ligand affinity assays, aptamer affinity assays, immobilized metal assays for phosphochemicals, assays for single nucleotide polymorphisms, and capillary electrophoresis laser-induced FP assays, have further extended the applications of FP techniques to drug discovery, protein-DNA interactions, disease diagnostics, and biochemical research. The use of microplate readers equipped with polarizing optics has led to the adoption of FP as a readout mode for high-throughput screening assays. This chapter briefly describes the basic principle of FP and summarizes some of the recent bioanalytical applications of FP. It also discusses the
2-Deoxycytidine, also known as dC, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as pyrimidine 2-deoxyribonucleosides. Pyrimidine 2-deoxyribonucleosides are compounds consisting of a pyrimidine linked to a ribose which lacks a hydroxyl group at position 2. 2-Deoxycytidine exists as a solid, possibly soluble (in water), and an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa) molecule. 2-Deoxycytidine exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans ...

The good news is, the fat you eat may be giving you more magnesium - even though it may not be a magnesium rich food itself.. At least sometimes.. This shouldnt be a surprise, despite the demonization of fat, it has been a staple part of the human diet dating back to dawn of hunting and fire. Indeed, insufficient fat was a much bigger concern throughout most of history. As always, abundance turns the world upside down, and fat got on the wrong side of many dieticians, not to mention dieters.. Well, heres a reason to make sure you have at least some fat in your diet. But, before you get too exited, evidence has shown that excess fat can actually block the absorption of magnesium.. So here goes - things that help you absorb more magnesium:. FAT. A study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Vol. 80, No. 2, 396-403, August 2004) looked at a small group of people to compare their absorption of carotenoids when eating salads with fat-free dressing as opposed to regular salad dressing with ...
