There have been several attempts, across the world, to revise nursery rhymes (along with fairy tales and popular songs). Even in the late 18th century we can sometimes see how rhymes like "Little Robin Redbreast" were cleaned up for a young audience.[24] In the late 19th century the major concern seems to have been violence and crime, which led leading childrens publishers in the United States like Jacob Abbot and Samuel Goodrich to improve Mother Goose rhymes.[25] In the early and mid-20th centuries this was a form of bowdlerisation, concerned with some of the more violent elements of nursery rhymes and led to the formation of organisations like the British Society for Nursery Rhyme Reform.[26] Psychoanalysts such as Bruno Bettelheim strongly criticized this revisionism, on the grounds that it weakened their usefulness to both children and adults as ways of symbolically resolving issues and it has been argued that revised versions may not perform the functions of catharsis for children, or ...
It is well-documented that the term "folklore" was coined in 1846 by the Englishman William Thoms. He fabricated it for use in an article published in the August 22, 1846 issue of The Athenaeum.[21] Thoms consciously replaced the contemporary terminology of "popular antiquities" or "popular literature" with this new word. Folklore was to emphasize the study of a specific subset of the population: the rural, mostly illiterate peasantry.[22] In his published call for help in documenting antiquities, Thoms was echoing scholars from across the European continent to collect artifacts of older, mostly oral cultural traditions still flourishing among the rural populace. In Germany the Brothers Grimm had first published their "Kinder- und Hausmärchen" in 1812. They continued throughout their lives to collect German folk tales to include in their collection. In Scandinavia, intellectuals were also searching for their authentic Teutonic roots and had labeled their studies Folkeminde (Danish) or ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Ego Atrophy in Addiction Illustrated through American Cultural Music Folklore. AU - Fine, James. AU - Juni, Samuel. PY - 2000. Y1 - 2000. N2 - Popular music is an artifact of folklore that can provide a keen insight into societal complexity. As a window with minimal censorship, it allows access to a subgroup whose motifs are often obfuscated from within and without by defensive and self righteous distortions. Music is a primary source depicting the strivings and failings of a culture or its tributaries. An overview is offered of the American social historical context of substance abuse, as it informs the theory of ego atrophy to conceptualize addiction. In this study, it is appealed to as an aid in the elaboration of addictive behavior. Adjunctively, major themes in movie pictures are referenced as parallel, albeit less refined, indices of stereotype in the culture. Together with societal laws and mores, these markers point to a specific behavioral and value system that typifies ...
Behind ever art is a man, behind the man is the race and behind the race is the social and natural environment and these influences are sure to be reflected on folklore. There is an enormous amount of influence of folklore in our old and modern Bengali literature. In Bangladesh folklore activities were much accelerated when The Bangla Academy in Dhaka in 1955 to promote research work on Bengali language and literature and collected, preserved, and published folklore materials. Mohammad Sayeedur started his professional life in Bangla academy Folklore division at 1962 by the guideline of Jainul abedin, Jashim uddin and others, who builds up a lot of collection of tangible and intangible folk heritage by himself, those which are the valuable national properties of our country. But now a day, his huge collections are being destroyed for lack of authority, space and proper preservation. In this Mohammod Sayeedur Folk Heritage Museum and Research centre, where the scientists of different countries ...
Im a lover of folklore. As a child I loved reading or hearing about so-called real life monsters. Back then I truly believed that monsters were hiding behind every corner and in every bush. Now that Im grown, I take a more agnostic approach to such tales. I think its important to touch on the nature of folklore and how one should approach it. It would be a disservice unto folklore to approach it as having a 100% basis in reality. Instead, the proper way to approach folklore is to perceive it as if occurring in an alternative reality or parallel universe. Sure, these tales are magical and intruiging, but they also have a dark side, or should I say, people do. People who cant tell the difference between fantasy and reality have been inspired by folklore to harass, abuse, and even kill people. Just think of all the people who have been executed for being witches and werewolves. Did such women actually fly through the air to have sex with the devil and eat babies? Did men actually don a magic ...

Legends of vampires have existed for millennia; cultures such as the Mesopotamians, Hebrews, ancient Greeks, and Romans had tales of demonic entities and blood-drinking spirits which are considered precursors to modern vampires. Despite the occurrence of vampire-like creatures in these ancient civilizations, the folklore for the entity we know today as the vampire originates almost exclusively from early 18th-century Southeastern Europe, particularly Transylvania as verbal traditions of many ethnic groups of the region were recorded and published. In most cases, vampires are revenants of evil beings, suicide victims, or witches, but can also be created by a malevolent spirit possessing a corpse or by being bitten by a vampire itself. Belief in such legends became so rife that in some areas it caused mass hysteria and even public executions of people believed to be vampires. Tales of the undead consuming the blood or flesh of living beings have been found in nearly every culture around the world ...

Whipped them all soundly, and sent them to bed.. Enough said.. While I joke (slightly) about the messages in nursery rhymes, I am seriously concerned about the information that Abbi will be exposed to. I know that television, school, friends, and the internet are probably going to teach her things before we think shes ready. I hope that Em and I find a way to filter the material and yet still allow our little girl to learn and grow. Shes 5 weeks old and Im constantly thinking about this kind of stuff.. ...

In comparison with literature and history that are as if fixed memory of the people, various, wise and well constructed, the folklore (both poetic and musical) is in a greater degree eternal, not getting old feeling of boundless and unexhausted forces - equally in pleasures and in troubles. Even in complicated and refined, if to view in the aspect of subject, rhythm or musical - verbal character, folklore genres we are always captured and amazed by spontaneous perception of the world, natural emotions and opinions in their expression. Typical national features of each people, its way of thinking, specificity of mental and emotional models are shown in full extent in national songs, folk tunes and epic legends. As a specific phenomenon of the national culture it concentrates the poetic, musical, theatre and ethnographic traditions. Obvious evidence for that became the Second Open Folklore Festival "Boysun Bahori" in Boysun of Surkhandarya region, which was held on the date of the second ...
I began this project with an intent to explore and document ways folk knowledge and local culture could be tapped in order to build connections to young adult literature. I saw this as a teacher-research project that would explore an extension of traditional reader-response activities, beginning with a recognition of the need to meet readers where they are and building progressively more sophisticated aesthetic responses to literature. Folklore was simply another part of the readers prior knowledge to be tapped to foster response. I did not question the assumption that the purpose for all of this was the study of the novel (and whatever increased reading skill students might gain through the reading of the novel). Literature was primary; folklore was a tool to be used in its service.. By the time I finished the project, I was beginning to understand that the folklore was at least as important as the literature, not simply a tool to be used in service of the teaching of literature. That is to ...
From "Marine Sanitation: Fact vs. Folklore" by Peggie Hall, copyright 1997, reprinted with permission). ODOR CONTROL IN HOLDING TANKS It really IS possible to have a completely odor-free system!. Youve probably read or heard, over and over again, that the key to odor control is the "right" hose, that the "wrong" hose permeates with sewage and causes the system to stink. Thats folklore…a little truth coupled with a lot of misunderstanding. The real key to odor control is in knowing how to incorporate proven sewage management principles-the same ones used in composting and sewage treatment-into the installation of the entire system. What very few people in the marine industry have learned, and why there is so much folklore about odor, is the very nature of sewage itself and how it breaks down, what creates odor and what prevents odor from forming. Once we understood these principles and learned how to apply them to onboard systems, we were able to install systems that are completely odor-free ...
As I become more experienced and knowledgeable in the areas of gardening and raising children, I have observed that they have something in common - there is a lot of folklore and half-truths about each that has been passed down from one generation to the next. For both, the folklore may come in the form of problem diagnosis, treatment, or simple tips on growing (or child-rearing) techniques. Some of the gardening folklore actually has some factual or logical basis. One example has to do with members of the cucurbit family - squash, melons, pumpkins, and cucumbers.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death for Hispanics in the U.S. Hispanics are disproportionally affected by CVD and experience risk factors at higher rates than non-Hispanic whites. Moreover, the prevalence of obesity has increased for Hispanics in the last decades. Although CVD are among the most expensive and widespread health problems, they are among the most preventable. Evidence shows that diet plays an important role in the development of CVD; population-wide dietary changes are partially responsible for the increasing epidemic of chronic diseases and the consumption of a healthier dietary pattern can help prevent and control CVD morbidity and mortality.. The H.E.A.R.T. (Health Education Awareness Research Team) study was an 8-year NIH funded project that implemented risk-reduction strategies to improve heart health in Hispanics living in the U.S.-Mexico border. Baseline data from the H.E.A.R.T. study was used to evaluate dietary patterns among ...

Its come to my attention that I got a lot less traffic over on Wordpress than I do here at Blogger. Understanding as I do that sometimes people are reluctant to click links or just dont see them I thought I would write this post to introduce you to my fiction blog over at WP. Its a collection of posts from my collaborative fiction writing at Pan Historia. I am reposting writing from three stories at the moment: The Midnight People, Turnskin, and Tombstone. The Midnight People is an original concept in the fantasy genre that derives inspiration from Celtic folklore and Tolkien that I consider a modern fairy tale. It often has horror elements and is written with an adult audience in mind. Turnskin is another original concept in the horror genre, this time, and features werewolves. Again I hope to appeal to an adult audience. I kept some pretty strict rules about lycanthropy and preferred to use a blend of both Western and American Indian folklore for inspiration. The last genre Im reposting is ...

The rich oral literature and classical literature of the Malays contain a great number of portraits of the people, from the servant to the minister, from the judge to the Rajas, from the ancient to the very contemporary periods, which together form the amorphous identity of the Malays.[101]. Considering the softness and mellifluence of the Malay language, which lends itself easily to the requirements of rhyme and rhythm, the originality and beauty in Malay literature can be assessed in its poetical elements. Among the forms of poetry in Malay literature are - the Pantun, Syair and Gurindam. The earliest form of Malay literature was the oral literature and its central subjects are traditional folklore relating to nature, animals and people. The folklore were memorised and passed from one generation of storytellers to the next. Many of these tales were also written down by penglipur lara (storytellers) for example: Hikayat Malim Dewa, Hikayat Malim Deman, Hikayat Raja Donan, Hikayat Anggun Cik ...
The Open Graves, Open Minds Project unearthed depictions of the vampire and the undead in literature, art, and other media, before embracing shapeshifting creatures (most recently, the werewolf) and other supernatural beings and their worlds. It opens up questions concerning genre, gender, hybridity, cultural change, and other realms. It extends to all narratives of the fantastic, the folkloric, the fabulous, and the magical. Supernatural Cities encourages conversation between disciplines (e.g. history, cultural geography, folklore, social psychology, anthropology, sociology and literature). It explores the representation of urban heterotopias, otherness, haunting, estranging, the uncanny, enchantment, affective geographies, communal memory, and the urban fantastical.. The city theme ties in with OGOMs current research: Sam Georges work on the English Eerie and the urban myth of Old Stinker, the Hull werewolf; the Pied Pipers city of Hamelin and the geography and folklore of Transylvania; ...

With Voodoo (more properly spelled Voudou, actually, but the other spelling is better recognized) you have a lot of ancestor traditions, folklore, and probably spiritual figures who were gods and goddesses in the ancient traditions. They got changed when the slaves had to go somewhat underground with their beliefs, and nowadays, the Loa are kind of like Catholicisms saints-- the Voodoo practitioner will appeal to them for daily favors or help instead of bothering the "Big God" named Bondye. In Haiti, it used to be said that 100% of people are Catholic and 99% are Voodoo. So Hoodoo is more the version that sprang up in the Southern U.S., mixed with magic and folklore from the rural south, the Appalachians, the islands like Gullah in the Carolinas. Hoodoo usually doesnt really reference the Loa as much as the more formal Voudou, and thats why I decided to call the book and the magic in it Hoodoo, to try to avoid any religious disrespect in my own story. However, the Loa and the Voudou still ...
