Routinely conducting case finding (also commonly referred to as screening) in patients with chronic illness for depression in primary care appears to have little impact. We explored the views and experiences of primary care nurses, doctors and managers to understand how the implementation of case finding/screening might impact on its effectiveness. Two complementary qualitative focus group studies of primary care professionals including nurses, doctors and managers, in five primary care practices and five Community Health Partnerships, were conducted in Scotland. We identified several features of the way case finding/screening was implemented that may lead to systematic under-detection of depression. These included obstacles to incorporating case finding/screening into a clinical review consultation; a perception of replacing individualised care with mechanistic assessment, and a disconnection for nurses between management of physical and mental health. Far from being a standardised process that

This study used a focus group methodology to examine the perceived motivators of and barriers to healthy eating behaviors among African American, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic White American children from families with low household incomes. The present study also examined if there were differences in perceived motivators of and barriers to healthy eating behaviors in association with gender and race/ethnicity. Specifically, the healthy eating behaviors assessed in this study include (a) eating foods and snacks that are lower in fat and calories; and (b) eating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Participants were 37 children between the ages of 9 and 12 years old who were from families with an annual household income of 40,000 dollars or less. These children participated in one of six gender- and race/ethnicity- concordant focus groups that were conducted at various community sites and led by trained focus group leaders of the same gender and race/ethnicity as the focus group?s participants. ...
We talked with 127 middle class participants across the twelve focus groups. Participants were required to 1) be a working-age adult (24-64 years old); 2) be middle-class (according to the middle 60% income range for their specific geographic location); 3) live in one of the five specific geographic areas; and 4) meet the race-gender specifications for the focus group in their area. Our final sample represented an income range of $22,900-$130,900 and encompassed a wide range of career fields including administrative assistance, health and social services, construction, teaching, service and hospitality, energy, technology, and law. The figures below present the breakdown of educational attainment, political views, and marital status of the focus group participants. ...
Background: While marketing for electronic cigarette refill liquids (e-liquids) is widespread on Instagram, little is known about the post elements that create appeal among young adult Instagram users. Further information is needed to help shape regulatory strategies appropriate for social media. Objective: This study examined young adult Instagram user perceptions of actual e-liquid marketing posts and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-mandated nicotine addiction warning statements on Instagram. Methods: A series of 12 focus groups (n=69) were held with non-tobacco users, vapers, smokers, and dual users in Wisconsin between September and December 2018. Participants discussed the elements of posts that they found appealing or unappealing, in addition to completing a survey about each post and e-liquid. Focus group transcripts were analyzed by smoking status using a framework analysis approach. Results: Although willingness to try e-liquids was highest among nicotine users, focus group discussions
TY - JOUR. T1 - The Bobath concept in stroke rehabilitation: a focus group study of the experienced physiotherapists perspective. AU - Lennon, Sheila. AU - Ashburn, A. PY - 2000/10. Y1 - 2000/10. N2 - Purpose : The Bobath concept, usually known as neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT) in America, is one of the major approaches used to rehabilitate patients following stroke; however since the last publication of Bobath (1990), the concept has been taught via an oral tradition on postgraduate courses. This study therefore aimed to explore with experienced therapists firstly how the Bobath concept had changed since 1990, and secondly what they considered its main theoretical assumptions to be using a focus group research design. Method: Eight peer-nominated expert physiotherapists agreed to participate in two focus groups organized according to specialist interest in either neurology (group A) or elderly care (group B). Therapists were asked to discuss six topics based on a review of published ...

Background: Access to health information is critical for good health. However, residents of rural communities may face more difficulties in accessing health information than residents in rural areas. Problems may be structural, socio‐economic and cultural.. Objectives: The study assessed sources and challenges concerning health information access and use among residents of five rural communities in Ibadan, Nigeria.. Methods: Descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were elicited from forty respondents through focus group discussions (FGD). Elicited data were thematically analyzed.. Results: Several informal and primary information sources were often used. Residents used the radio to access health information, and they also visited hospitals/health centres, asked doctors, participated in health sensitisation programmes and consulted traditional herbalists. However, the barriers included financial problems, infrastructure problems (bad road network, unreliable electricity supplies), ...
Focus groups bring together a group of respondents (normally 8 - 10) who are then encouraged to discuss and debate a specific topic. Often, stimuli are used to engender greater input or to gauge reactions to potential new products or proposals (i.e. advertisements). Focus groups are led by a moderator, who often utilises a topic guide to ensure that the discussion remains relevant. However, a good moderator is able to allow the group to flow down unexpected but potentially interesting paths.. Focus groups are often utilised at the start of a project to discuss the wider issues which may then inform a quantitative stage of research. Alternatively, if a robust set of quantitative research results are gained, groups might be used to understand the emotional drivers behind these findings.. Market research focus groups are one of the qualitative techniques offered by DJS Research Ltd.. ...
bstract Undernutrition remains a key public health burden in Nepal. This study aimed to measure knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about nutritious food amongst mothers of 3 - 5 year olds from rural and urban areas. A cross-sectional mixed-methods approach comprised a quantitative survey and qualitative focus groups. The community-based survey included 524 mothers of children who are no longer breastfed. Open-ended and structured questions investigated knowledge, beliefs and attitudes about nutritious food, child feeding patterns, and major barriers, food insecurity, and health seeking behaviours. Focus groups were held with key informants, a thematic analysis was applied to the qualitative data. Results: Major barriers to recommending nutritious foods included: lack of knowledge (19%); cost (21%); and culture/beliefs (7%). Nearly 55% children were given fruit once a week. Almost 37% of mothers never gave meat, fish and egg regularly to their children and 34% did not choose healthy food from ...
The principal objective is to study the integration of public health and medical care systems in one urban county, based on principles for integration set forth in the 2012 IOM report on integrating public health and primary care. In so doing, the study seeks to advance both science and practice related to the following question from the National Research Agenda for PHSSR: What conditions and strategies facilitate productive inter-organizational relationships and patterns of interaction among organizations that contribute to public health strategies at local, state, and national levels? To accomplish this, the proposed study will utilize a rigorous mixed method approach, combining quantitative survey methodology with qualitative focus groups and structured interview methodology. The study also seeks to leverage the established Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) approach to involving community stakeholders in driving a local research agenda related to integration. Project findings will assist ...
Twelve focus groups were conducted to determine how various at-risk groups would respond to Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) educational outreach approaches presented via print (posters and comic book), television, and radio media. Knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding HIV and AIDS were also investigated. Members of the Ulster County New York AIDS Consortium were trained as focus group facilitators and moderators to conduct these sessions. While there were certain outreach aspects that achieved consensus, these were all technical in nature. On all other points, preferences, judgments, personal history, gender, and other sensitivities shaped reactions, demonstrating the difficulty of creating a single approach that would effectively reach all audiences. (The report describes what each of the 12 focus groups favored and what they disliked. Reactions to these outreach efforts emphasize the need to do early message testing in developing
The public primary healthcare system in Greece has not been fully developed and is delivered by urban and rural health centers, outpatient departments in public hospitals and the recently established first-contact and decentralized local primary care units. The aim of this study was to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool for conducting periodic user experience evaluation surveys in public Primary HealthCare facilities in Greece such as outpatient clinics of public hospitals and health centers. A mixed methods approach was applied. In particular, the methodology of developing and validating the tools included three steps: (a) establishment of the theoretical background/literature review, (b) qualitative study: development of the tools items and establishment of the face validity and (c) quantitative study: pilot testing and establishment of the structural validity and estimation of the internal consistency of the tools. Two patient focus groups participated in qualitative study: one visiting
Key independent voters are uninterested in the details of the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, according to focus groups conducted by America First Policies (AFP).. AFP held 18 focus groups over the past two months in Charlotte, Columbus, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Des Moines, Orlando, Phoenix, and Miami with self-identified independent voters on the 2020 election and impeachment. The voters did not know they would be talking about politics when they were selected for the focus groups, a source close to AFP explained.. The voters did not mention Ukraine, an alleged quid pro quo, Rudy Giuliani, or any other key details about the House Democrats impeachment inquiry, according to videos of the focus groups reviewed by the Daily Caller. Instead, the focus groups expressed concerns about the largely closed-door process and the fact that the inquiry is a distraction from other issues that they care about.. I dont think the majority of the country cares. They want the problems ...
The rate of HIV infection among adolescents is increasing at an alarming rate. Adherence to antiretroviral therapy has been a major challenge in achieving and maintaining adequate control of the disease in this population. DOT has been shown effective in individuals with tuberculosis (TB), but DOT in HIV infected populations has not been thoroughly examined. This study will collect information from HIV infected adolescents in order to establish a DOT program that will increase successful adherence to HIV treatment and will benefit the public by preventing development of viral resistance and reducing the risk of transmission.. Adolescent participants in this study will be assigned to one of three 2-hour focus group sessions, each at a different site. The participants will complete a questionnaire and will give input about designing a DOT intervention model that will be accepted by adolescents. The model will then be used in a pilot study to determine the feasibility of implementing DOT programs ...

Volunteers provide essential services to community sport organizations; thus, it is important to understand the underlying factors in successful volunteer-organization relationships. Organizational identification, an integral component of relationship building for members in an organization, is a useful yet underutilized concept to understand how and why volunteers create lasting, deep relationships with sport organizations. This research utilizes a sequential mixed-method design to examine the evolution of organizational identification among volunteers in a community sport organization. The survey results indicate that new volunteers formed their organizational identification over the course of a single program season, such that, by the end of the season, they were similar to returners. Subsequent qualitative analysis of focus group data indicated that the content and evolution of organizational identities varied for newcomers and returners. These results provide important contributions related ...

Reductions in underage drinking will only come about from changes in the social and cultural environment. Despite decades of messages discouraging parental supply, parents perceive social norms supportive of allowing children to consume alcohol in safe environments. Twelve focus groups conducted in a regional community in NSW, Australia; four with parents of teenagers (n = 27; 70 % female) and eight with adolescents (n = 47; 55 % female). Participants were recruited using local media. Groups explored knowledge and attitudes and around alcohol consumption by, and parental supply of alcohol to, underage teenagers; and discussed materials from previous campaigns targeting adolescents and parents. Parents and adolescents perceived teen drinking to be a common behaviour within the community, but applied moral judgements to these behaviours. Younger adolescents expressed more negative views of teen drinkers and parents who supply alcohol than older adolescents. Adolescents and parents perceived those who
Drawing on community expertise. As part of the project development process, WSPS conducted two focus groups with employers who hire Spanish-speaking seasonal workers and others. To ensure we were building the right tools, we wanted to understand from them exactly what was needed and ensure that what we were developing was on the right track, says Miller.. WSPS Network News spoke with two focus group participants, Ryan Tregunno of Tregunno Fruit Farms (Niagara-on-the-Lake), and Jamie Warner of Warner Orchards (Beamsville) about the process and the tools.. Participating was a benefit to all of us, says Warner. Warner Orchards employs 25 Spanish-speaking workers every year; Tregunno Fruit Farms, about 20. Both operations also employ local English-speakers. Having the same material in the two languages will help ensure training and education is consistent in both languages, says Warner.. Our workers are very receptive to safety training, he continues. They pay attention, they absorb it, and ...

INTRODUCTION. In the last few years focus group interviewing has become a widely used technique for conducting qualitative research. However, some concern has been expressed about the potential misuse of this convenient interview form (Caruso 1976). This concern cakes on added significance in view of the fact that very little research has been reported on the use of this technique. Therefore, this paper will provide (1) a review of the focus group literature, (2) some contradictory empirical evidence from related disciplines, and (3) suggestions for future research in this area.. Ac the outset it should be recognized that the very definition of focus groups depends upon the moderators preferred methodology. Most methods of focus group interviewing are consistent with Davidsons (1975) definition: A focused group interview is a qualitative tool for collecting information in which a number of respondents simultaneously discuss a given topic under the guidance or a moderator. This definition ...
Self-monitoring of blood pressure is common but guidance on how it should be carried out varies and it is currently unclear how such guidance is viewed. To explore patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs) views and experiences of the use of different self-monitoring regimens to determine what is acceptable and feasible, and to inform future recommendations. Thirteen focus groups and four HCP interviews were held, with a total of 66 participants (41 patients and 25 HCPs) from primary and secondary care with and without experience of self-monitoring. Standard and shortened self-monitoring protocols were both considered. Focus groups and interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed using the constant comparative method. Patients generally supported structured schedules but with sufficient flexibility to allow adaptation to individual routine. They preferred a shorter (3-day) schedule to longer (7-day) regimens. Although HCPs could describe benefits for patients of using a ...
Description: Background Regular physical activity (PA) has many health benefits but declines with age. Community multi-activity groups offering volunteer-led socially-oriented activity programs could provide an opportunity for older people to maintain or increase PA levels and promote their health. The aim of this study was to examine the potential effect of becoming a member of an existing community activity group on PA levels, physical and mental health-related quality of life (HR QoL), comparing any impacts associated with participation in physical activity or social activity programs. Methods This mixed-methods case study, combining a longitudinal quantitative-survey with qualitative focus groups to contextualise the survey results, focused on an Australian community organisation called Life Activities Clubs (LACs). LACs provide various physical activities (e.g. walking, cycling, dancing) and social activities (e.g. book groups, dine-outs, craft). Data were collected using a self-report ...

A qualitative study in BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth investigated the reasons underlying womens dangerous choice of not using the primary health care facilities provided. Discussion through focus groups allowed the authors to identify some major themes behind this trend. Participants underlined the difficulty in reaching the health centers, as paved road are non-existent and it is risky to use the bad roads available. Difficulty in obtaining a mean of transportation and distance to the facilities were also identified as important barriers.. Furthermore, participants stated that those clinics are not open at all times and taking a trip there and finding them closed discouraged them from using the health care facilities on other occasions.. Strikingly, women also reveal that often the quality of care is not adequate; there is not medication to alleviate the pain, waiting times are long, the environment is not friendly and the healthcare professionals are not supportive or competent. This, in ...

Background: Social wellbeing factors such as loneliness and social support have a major impact on the health of older adults and can contribute to physical and mental wellbeing. However, with increasing age, social contacts and social support typically decrease and levels of loneliness increase. Group social engagement appears to have additional benefits for the health of older adults compared to socialising individually with friends and family, but further research is required to confirm whether group activities can be beneficial for the social wellbeing of older adults. Methods: This one-year longitudinal mixed methods study investigated the effect of joining a community group, offering a range of social and physical activities, on social wellbeing of adults with a mean age of 70. The study combined a quantitative survey assessing loneliness and social support (n = 28; three time-points, analysed using linear mixed models) and a qualitative focus group study (n = 11, analysed using thematic ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Quality of life in breast cancer survivors as identified by focus groups. AU - Ferrell, Betty R.. AU - Grant, Marcia M.. AU - Funk, Brandi. AU - Otis-Green, Shirley. AU - Garcia, Nellie. PY - 1997/5/21. Y1 - 1997/5/21. N2 - Currently, over 1,700,000 women are living with breast cancer in the United States. These long-term survivors of breast cancer are challenged to redirect their energy from issues of cancer treatment and early side effects toward quality of life issues related to long-term survivorship, such as menopause, infertility, fear of recurrence, family distress, and uncertainty. In an attempt to obtain patient perspectives on quality of life and health care issues faced by breast cancer survivors, focus group methodology was utilized in the first year of a 2 year study. The sample was stratified to represent three age groups: ,40 years, 40-60 years, and ,60, and was intended to represent different developmental levels believed to have varying experiences with quality ...
Non-communicable diseases (NCD) are the leading causes of death globally. In Pakistan, they are among the top ten causes of mortality, especially in the productive age group (30-69 years). Evidence suggests that health perceptions and beliefs strongly influence the health behavior of an individual. We performed focus group interviews to delineate the same so as to design the user interface of a non-invasive stroke risk monitoring device. It was a qualitative study, designed to explore how health perceptions and beliefs influence behavior for NCD prevention. Four focus group discussions (FGD) were conducted with 30 stable participants who had diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, blood pressure, and stroke. The data was collected using a semi-structured interview guide designed to explore participants perceptions of their illnesses, self-management behaviors and factors affecting them. The interviews were transcribed and content analysis was done using steps of content analysis by Morse and Niehaus
Focus group findings revealed both perceived barriers and benefits to consumer adoption of HIT including HIE, e-Rx, and PHRs. In general, participants were very positive about the potential benefits of these technologies. Improvements in patient care were expected as a result of physician access to consolidated information across providers as well as speed of sharing and availability of information in an emergency. In addition, participants were optimistic about patient empowerment in the form of convenient access to and control of personal health data. Participants were generally open to seeing HIE and related services as beneficial tools to reduce concern and effort in the tasks of organizing and monitoring medical information for oneself and ones family members.. A major barrier was the perceived risks of sharing confidential medical information via the Internet. Focus group participants concerns centered on general fear of technology, accidental inappropriate sharing of information, and ...
Focus groups are one of the key qualitative market research methods of garnering opinion amongst your prospective target market.. A focus group is generally a pre-defined group of people (usually referred to as respondents) brought together to provide insight into a particular subject, this can include but will not be limited to a company, person, brand, product, or service. Depending on the market research objectives any number of focus groups can be held in any location and venue, for any duration, at any time in the day or evening. For any particular project there can be single or multiple focus groups held. Generally, the more focus groups conducted the greater the insight gained.. The standard focus group is usually on average 1.5 hours in duration and held on the evening to make it accessible and convenient for the attendees/respondents.. For more information on the recruitment of respondents for focus groups please click here.. ...
OBJECTIVES: The role of parents in life-and-death decision-making for infants born at the border of viability is challenging. Some argue that parents should have the final say in decisions about life-sustaining treatment. Others disagree. In this article, we report views from health care personnel (HCP) on the appropriate parental role. METHODS: Focus group interviews with 5 different groups of HCP (neonatal nurses, midwifes, obstetricians, mother-fetal specialists, and neonatologists) dealing with life-and-death decisions throughout pregnancy and birth were performed at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and at St Olavs Hospital in Trondheim, Norway in 2014-2017. Interviews were taped and transcribed. Inductive analysis was performed for each group discussion for emergent ethical themes. A summary of the transcribed discussion was sent to the relevant focus group participants for comments. RESULTS: Our participants felt strongly that doctors, not parents, should have the final ...
Groundnut is among the most important crops for smallholder farmers in Tanzania, providing both food and income for households. Groundnut is a nutritious source of fats, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals for human consumption and parts of the crop can be used for livestock feed. This study identified factors which contribute to the stagnation of groundnut production among smallholder producers in Urambo district of Tabora region in Tanzania. Quantitative data were collected using a survey questionnaire administered to 400 smallholder farmers. Multistage, simple random and purposive sampling was used to select participants. Qualitative data were also collected through focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and personal observation. A multivariate regression technique was used to examine socio-economic factors influencing smallscale groundnut production in the district.. ...
Background. Student electives during the 5th year of the University of Cape Town (UCT) medical curriculum provide a 4-week work experience in the health system. The reflective reports of past students indicate that the electives may significantly shape their developing identities as health professionals and agents of change. Objective. To better understand how 5th-year medical elective students perceive themselves as agents of change to strengthen the elective programme in the Faculty of Health Sciences, UCT. The hypothesis was that the more choice that students are given over their learning, the greater is their sense of agency. Methods. Thirteen 5th-year student volunteers participated in four focus group discussions soon after completing their electives in district, regional or tertiary health facilities in the South African health system. Thematic analysis of the transcripts was performed independently by two of the authors. Results. Key themes were the importance of providing holistic patient
A valid measure of body image would be useful for AACTG studies. Such a measure might permit investigators to examine dissatisfaction with body image as a predictor variable in analyses of premature study drug discontinuation, loss to follow-up, and study drug non-adherence, and as a secondary outcome in antiretroviral and fat redistribution treatment trials.. Six focus group interviews, each lasting approximately 2 hours, are conducted at 4 AACTG sites. Separate groups are run for men and women, and male groups are segmented by sexual orientation. A moderator leads discussions about patients perceived changes in body habitus and body image. Group interviews are audio-taped and transcribed verbatim. Qualitative interview data are sent electronically to the Data Management Center, where they are thematically analyzed using qualitative data analysis (content analysis) techniques. Salient focus group findings are used to construct questionnaire items. ...

Objective: To investigate the extent to which people change their views about priority setting in health care as a result of discussion and deliberation. Design: A random sample of patients from two urban general practices was invited to attend two focus group meetings, a fortnight apart. Setting: North Yorkshire Health Authority. Subjects: 60 randomly chosen patients meeting in 10 ugroups of five to seven people. Main outcome measures: Differences between peoples views at the start of the first meeting and at the end of the second meeting, after they have had an opportunity for discussion and deliberation, measured by questionnaires at the start of the first meeting and the end of the second meeting. Results: Respondents became more reticent about the role that their views should play in determining priorities and more sympathetic to the role that healthcare managers play. About a half of respondents initially wanted to give lower priority to smokers, heavy drinkers, and illegal drug users, ...
The university environment reinforces positive alcohol-related expectations and motivations for drinking among undergraduate students. High levels of hazardous consumption in this population lead to significant negative alcohol-related consequences, for individuals and those around them. This study sought to explore the contexts in which those who engage in hazardous drinking consume alcohol, their perceptions of safety and harm, and receptivity to health messages. Undergraduate university students (n = 69; aged 17 - 24 of both genders [57% female]) were purposively recruited into one of seven focus groups after screening with the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) to select for hazardous drinking (score, >8) or moderate drinking. A focus group interview schedule was developed, which was informed by theory and tested for validity by a panel of experts. Qualitative analysis of the data revealed four thematic clusters: positive expectations; inescapable culture; defining
SEBONI, Naomi M. et al. Shaping the role of sub-Saharan African nurses and midwives: Stakeholders perceptions of the nurses and midwives tasks and roles. Health SA Gesondheid (Online) [online]. 2013, vol.18, n.1, pp.1-9. ISSN 2071-9736.. To explore the role expectations of different stakeholders in the health care system on the roles and tasks that nurses and midwives perform, in order to clarify and strengthen these roles and shape the future of nursing education and practice in sub-Saharan Africa. Qualitative focus group discussions were held with different stakeholders (nurses, health service managers, patients and their caregivers, community members and leaders and other health professionals) in eight African countries in order to establish their role expectations of nurses and midwives. Three questions about their role expectations and the interviews were taped, transcribed, and translated into English and analysed. There was consensus amongst the stakeholders regarding eight role ...
Vision related impacts on quality of life described by our focus group participants showed both similarities to and differences from those in other settings. In the United States, focus groups conducted for the development of the NEI-VFQ identified problems with mobility, reading, social relations and activities, and mood or mental health as the main impacts of their eye problem, while vision symptoms, especially blurred vision, were the most frequently mentioned group of problem statements.2 In-depth interviews with vision impaired patients in the United Kingdom elicited concerns over self esteem, self care, emotion, safety, domestic activities, financial aspects, as well as vision symptoms.12 A large number of studies in visually impaired individuals have concentrated on vision function using questionnaires developed predominantly from clinical judgment.3,6 These studies have variously reported problems with mobility (walking, using public transport, car driving), face recognition (near and ...
Scott Rhodes: In the vital records data we found that-compared to non-Latinos-Latinos did seek prenatal care later. They also had fewer prenatal care visits and were less likely to receive any prenatal care than non-Latinos. We decided to look at why Latinos are accessing public health services less, but with the knowledge that it didnt seem to be linked to this immigration policy. What we discovered through the focus groups is that immigration policies are not well understood by immigrant Latinos in North Carolina and what they do understand just compounds existing distrust of services. So Latinos already dont feel comfortable accessing services and the policies just reinforce those messages and create barriers to accessing and utilizing services. For example, focus group participants reported not having primary care providers and not having drivers licenses. They may drive to get to work because they have to make a living, but the risk of driving without a license was not worth seeking ...
The general aim of this study was to identify strategic and clinical quality indicators in surgical nursing care. The methods used were a literature review, focus group interviews and a survey with a questionnaire.. In the literature the most frequently found definition of a clinical indicator was a quantitative measure that can be used as a guide to monitor and evaluate the quality of important patient care and support activities. To uncover clinical nurses perceptions of important aspects of surgical nursing care, four focus group interviews were undertaken. A tentative model with two dimensions and fifteen categories emerged from the data analysis. This model was used as a base for designing items to be effective as strategic and clinical quality indicators in postoperative pain management. A questionnaire to 233 clinical nurses was compiled to establish the usefulness and relevance of the items designed. Generally, all the items had high scores as being essential, realistic to carry out, ...

The study recruited focus group participants from syringe exchange facilities in Philadelphia.
This project will provide insight into the demand for health care by non-urgent emergency department (ED) patients. This will be achieved by gathering ten years of ED data which will be analysed in order to identify factors which contribute to a patients decision-making process when presenting with non-urgent complaints. Further data will be gathered from patient focus groups, with both sets of data combined to provide a deeper understanding of this phenomenon. These findings will subsequently be presented as part of an interactive forum with key stakeholders and service users. Previous research (Unwin, 2015) identified that 31.4% of non-urgent ED patients would prefer to be managed by their general practitioner (GP). If these patients were able to be seen and treated outside the ED it is estimated that up to 8000 ED presentations could be directed to more suitable services if they were available at time of need ...
We invited nurses in leadership and direct-care roles to attend a four-hour focus group session. As we told participants, our goal would be to select an evidence-informed model consistent with the philosophy, vision, and mission of the organization and supported by our patient-care delivery model. Before the focus group, we assigned articles on evidence-informed practice and specific models to the participants. As an incentive, we offered continuing education credit for the session. During the session, we presented a variety of evidence-informed practice models that could serve as blueprints for moving from concept to action. Each model had a detailed diagram to help nurses better understand the process of identifying clinical and administrative problems, implementing solutions, and evaluating the solutions. The elements of the different models varied, but most included these stages: • establishing an answerable question based on some catalyst or ...

In analyses of 6,493 food purchase transactions over 65 weeks, the odds of buying foods on sale versus at full price were higher for grain-based snacks, sweet snacks, and sugar-sweetened beverages (odds ratios: 6.6, 5.9, and 2.6, respectively; all P < .001) but not for savory snacks. The odds of buying foods on sale versus full price were not higher for any of any of the LCF (P ≥ .07). Without controlling for quantities purchased, we found that spending increased as percentage saved from the full price increased for all HCF and for fruits and vegetables (P ≤ .002). Focus group participants emphasized the lure of sale items and took advantage of sales to stock up ...
In an effort to encourage men with experience of being subject to the criminal justice system to contribute to focus group discussions on the sensitive topic of mental health, while also doing our utmost to protect them from discomfort or risk of exploitation, we used a novel technique involving the creation of a fictional character, supplemented by an audio-recorded vignette. We studied the role played by this technique in achieving our stated aims of engaging without exposing. In this article, we report on the use of this technique in three focus groups, showing how in very different ways it shaped the interaction between participants and generated crucial insights into the lives and service needs of each group. We conclude that the technique may lend itself to being used in focus groups with other marginalized or seldom-heard populations.. ...
Syracuse, New York is home to 12,000 resettled refugees from 16 different countries, and this population continues to grow. The Onondaga Citizens League, a local civic group, released an influential report (The World at our Doorstep, 2012-13) on this population and recommended creation of a single location …for information and other resources to facilitate refugee resettlement. Our surveys and focus group sessions since 2013 with the Burmese Karen, who are part of the areas largest single refugee group, underline the value of a one-stop resources and services center. These refugee groups have limited English literacy, which would limit the value of a web-based portal. Computer access and digital literacy are low, as is textual literacy in their own language. Access to public transportation is a problem, so the appeal of a brick-and-mortar one-stop shop is limited. On the plus side, a technology that is nearly ubiquitous is the simple mobile phone. Using an open source interactive voice ...

The use of blended learning to develop the clinical knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals is increasing. This paper reports the qualitative findings from an evaluation of a blended learning course designed to equip registered nurses with the knowledge and skills required to practice competently in cardiac nursing. The aims of the study were to explore whether a cardiac care course could be successfully delivered mainly online and it had any impact on the students clinical practice. The sample consisted of course members and their mentors. Data were obtained through focus groups and interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. All students felt they had benefited from undertaking the course. Mentors identified higher levels of confidence and greater depth of knowledge and skills amongst their students. Areas identified for further development by both groups were firstly, the preparation of mentors for their role in supporting the students undertaking an online course and secondly, ...
This thesis is a qualitative study located within the context of contemporary New Zealand early childhood education. It investigates the impact and implications on pedagogy resulting from the gender discourses held by pre-service early childhood teachers, each of whom had just begun the final semester of the 3rd year of their Bachelor of teaching early childhood education. Specifically, using data generated through focus groups, it investigates the participants location and framing of gender, gender development and the participants understandings of gender diversity. The research, which extensively used post-structural feminism and Foucaults notion of discourse as a theoretical framework, identified the participants discourses around gender which were conflicting, uncontested and confused. A series of influential discourses regarding gender were identified as potentially shaping pre-service teachers developing teacher subjectivity. I claim that the shaping of teacher subject, who are ...
Cross-subsidies for improved sanitation in low income settlements: Assessing the willingness to pay of water utility customers in Kenyan cities.. Sanitation services are often inadequate for low-income populations in urban settings, and large financial investments are required to address this need. To generate public finance for urban sanitation, one potential approach is to include a sanitation surcharge within water utility bills. The Kenyan water regulator is exploring the potential of such a sanitation surcharge to cross-subsidize the recurrent costs of providing sanitation services in low-income areas of Kenyan cities. This research assessed utility customers support for a pro-poor sanitation surcharge. Working with two urban water utilities in Kenya, we conducted in-depth interviews, focus-group discussions, and customer surveys. On average, Kenyan utility customers were willing to pay USD 2.90 per month (8% of average water bills) for the sanitation surcharge; median WTP was USD 1.00 per ...
METHODS: In a cluster-randomized pilot trial eight breast cancer centers (two physicians per center) were randomized to either a complementary communication training program (9 h e-learning + 20 h on-site skills training) or to a control group without training. Each physician was asked to consult ten patients for whom he or she is not the physician in charge. We used mixed methods: Quantitative outcomes included physicians assessments (empathy, complexity of consultation, knowledge transfer) and patients assessments (satisfaction, empathy, knowledge transfer). For qualitative analyses, 15 (eight in the training and seven in the control group) videotaped consultations were analyzed based on grounded theory, and separate focus groups with the physicians of both groups were conducted ...
