800 times higher than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period),3 its discharge into the environment is restricted by the Kyoto Protocol. As a consequence, fluoroform needs to be destroyed or, alternatively, captured and used as a feedstock for manufacturing. The latter option, though vastly preferable, is difficult to realize due to the extraordinarily low reactivity of fluoroform. Only very recently have the first synthetically relevant transformations involving fluoroform started to emerge.4 Most relevant for the present work is a series of seminal publications from the laboratories of Mikami.5-7 Mikami and co-workers have shown that fluoroform can be utilized for the direct difluoromethylation of a variety of substrates utilizing strong lithium bases (lithium diisopropylamide (LDA) or lithium hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS)).5-7 In addition to Mikamis work, the difluoromethylation reactions of alkynes with CHF3 and tBuOK,8 as well as the difluoromethylation of phenols and malonates with aqueous ...
SMOLIK, Marek y SIEPIETOWSKI, Lukasz. Some factors influencing distribution coefficients of trace amounts of M2+ ions during the crystallization of Mn(CH3COO)2•4H2O. S.Afr.j.chem. (Online) [online]. 2011, vol.64, pp.34-37. ISSN 1996-840X.. Distribution coefficients, D2/1 (Henderson - Kracek, Khlopin) of trace amounts of Ni2+,Mg2+,Cu2+,Co2+,Zn2+,Cd2+,Ca2+, and Sr2+ have been determined during the crystallization of Mn(CH3COO)2∙4H2O. Their dependencies on several properties of co-crystallizing acetate hydrates M(CH3COO)2∙nH2O as well as co-crystallizing M2+ ions have been analyzed. The D2/1 values fall in the range from 0.011 (DCu) to 0.28 (DCo) and indicate the possibility of effective removal of trace amounts of most investigated ions during the crystallization of Mn(CH3COO)2∙4H2O at 25 °C. They generally do not depend directly on most investigated factors, but those of Mg2+,Ni2+ and Co2+ ions, which form acetate tetrahydrates like Mn(CH3COO)2∙4H2O, closely depend on electronegativity ...

The topographic map of cell position in the avian retina is inverted in its projection to the optic tectum. Dorsal retinal ganglion cell axons project to ventral tectum, and ventral retinal ganglion cells project to dorsal tectum. Topographic gradients of toponymic (TOP) cell surface molecules along the dorsoventral axes of retina and tectum also are inverted. TOP molecules are most abundant in dorsal retina and ventral tectum and least abundant in ventral retina and dorsal tectum during the period of initial retinal-tectal interaction. Thus, TOP molecules may be involved in orienting the retinotectal map. ...
Fluoroaromatic compounds are used as agrochemicals and released into environment as pollutants. Glycosylation of 2-, 3-, and 4-fluorophenols using plant cell cultures of Nicotiana tabacum was investigated to elucidate their potential to metabolize these compounds. Cultured N. tabacum cells converted 2-fluorophenol into its β-glucoside (60%) and β-gentiobioside (10%). 4-Fluorophenol was also glycosylated to its β-glucoside (32%) and β-gentiobioside (6%) by N. tabacum cells. On the other hand, N. tabacum glycosylated 3-fluorophenol to β-glucoside (17%).

Description: The energy states of C₃ᵥ symmetric top polyatomic molecules were studied. Both classical and quantum mechanical methods have been used to introduce the energy states of polyatomic molecules. Also, it is shown that the vibration-rotation spectra of polyatomic molecules in the ground and excited vibrational states can be predicted by group theory. A comprehensive model for predicting rotational frequency components in various v₁₀ vibrational levels of propyne was developed by using perturbation theory and those results were compared with other formulas for C₃ᵥ symmetric top molecules. The v₁₀=1,2,3 and ground rotational spectra of propyne in the frequency range 17-70 GHz have been reassigned by using the derived comprehensive model. The v₁₀=3 and v₁₀=4 rotational spectra of propyne have been investigated in the 70 GHz, and 17 to 52 GHz regions, respectively, and these spectral components assigned using the comprehensive model. Molecular constants for these ...
The major challenge in membrane filtration is fouling which reduces the membrane performance. Fouling is mainly due to the adhesion of foulants on the membrane surfaces. In this work, we studied the fouling behaviour of polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) isoporous membrane and the mussel inspired polydopamine/L-cysteine isoporous zwitterionic membrane. Polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) isoporous membranes were fabricated via self-assembly and non-solvent induced phase separation method. Subsequently, the isoporous membrane was modified by a mild mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) coating; the isoporous surface structure and the water flux was retained. Zwitterionic L-cysteine was further anchored on the PDA coated membranes via Michael addition reaction at pH 7 and 50 °C to alleviate their antifouling ability with foulants solution. The membranes were thoroughly characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic ...
The retention of a solute in a chromatographic system is determined firstly, by the magnitude of the distribution coefficient of the solute between the two phases and secondly, by the amount of stationary phase available to the solute for interaction. This is fully discussed in Plate Theory and Extensions of this series. In addition, the mechanism of distribution has been considered exclusively on the basis of molecular interactions in The Mechanism of Chromatographic Retention . However, the distribution coefficient in chromatography is an equilibrium constant and, consequently, it can be treated rationally by conventional thermodynamics. It follows, that the distribution coefficient can be expressed in terms of the standard energy of solute exchange between the phases employing the traditional and well established Arrhenious relationship, RT ln (K) = -DGo (1). ...

Phenol derivatives constitute a family of neuroactive compounds. The aim of our study was to identify structural features that determine their modulatory effects at glycine receptors. We investigated the effects of four methylated phenol derivatives and two halogenated analogues on chloride inward currents via rat α1and α1β glycine receptors, heterologously expressed in HEK 293. All compounds potentiated the effect of a submaximal glycine concentration in both α1homomeric and α1β glycine receptors. While the degree of maximum potentiation of the glycine 10 μM effect in α1β receptors was not different between the compounds, the halogenated compounds achieved half-maximum potentiating effects in the low μM range - at more than 20-fold lower concentrations compared with their nonhalogenated analogues (P | 0.0001). The coactivating effect was over-ridden by inhibitory effects at concentrations | 300 μM in the halogenated compounds. Neither the number nor the position of the methyl groups

Distribution coefficients, Kbi00d and KtiSSues (or biophase), from the gas phase to blood and gas phase to tissues (plasma, brain, fat, heart, liver, lung, kidney, muscle, urine, saline and olive oil) have been collected for large number of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For these datasets of VOCs, linear free energy relationships (LFERs) have been established and Abraham equations have successfully been constructed to predict these distributions. It has also been shown that human and rat data for the air to blood and air to tissue distribution of VOCs can be combined. The differences in the two data sets, for the common compounds are smaller than the estimated inter-laboratory experimental error. The combination of the log KtiSSue values with values for air to blood yields distribution coefficients from blood to tissue, as log PtiSSue-Equations have successfully been constructed to predict these distributions. From a large amount of collected data on the distribution of drugs from blood, ...
Throughout our projects, site-specific data will be collected and models will be used to assess the fate and transport of metal contaminants. We propose to incorporate a new environmental chemistry module in our general chemistry class (CHEM 111, typical enrollment of 90). This unit will introduce students to fate and transport modeling by measuring the distribution coefficient, Kd, which is a common parameter used to estimate the concentration and movement of metal pollutants in ground water. Kd is a measure of the extent of interactions between a pollutant and the soil matrix and is one of the keys to the understanding of the mobility and persistence of metals in the environment. A distribution coefficient for copper has previously been measured in a standardized soil material (Dunnivant, 2002), and the procedure can be adapted to soils collected from our study sites. The module will be conducted over two laboratory periods. The first week will consist of a spectroscopy lab, where the students ...

Researchers from Carnegie Melon University and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have recently published an article in Journal of the Royal Society titled Staying Sticky: Contact Self-Cleaning of Gecko-Inspired Adhesives that presents the first gecko-inspired adhesive that matches both the attachment and self-cleaning properties of geckos foot on a smooth surface.. Using glass microspheres to simulate contamination the scientists created a synthetic gecko adhesive that could self-clean and recover lost adhesion. Real world applications of self-cleaning adhesives are reusable adhesive tapes, clothing, medical adhesives (bandages) and pick-and-place robots, among others.. Everyday challenge with traditional adhesives is that they loose their stickiness once contaminated. Geckos have been intriguing researchers for decades because of their unique and striking capability to maintain the stickiness of their toes through contact self-cleaning. They can travel up the walls and ceilings in a wide ...

My extract for our theme is from von Fischers comprehensive textbook Paint and Varnish Technology published in 1948 by the Reinhold Publishing Company. I have chosen to reproduce the first part of Chapter 5 as it comprehensively contrasts and compares all white opacifying pigments used in the coatings industry at a point in time when Titanium Dioxide was just coming to dominate this field. A coatings text, therefore, had to compare TiO2 with the existing technologies that the coatings technologists at the time would have been familiar with. This textbook was also published prior to the introduction of surface treated grades of TiO2 and at a time when anatase TiO2 was considered the appropriate choice for exterior white house paints because of the self-cleaning properties brought about by its free-chalking characteristics. ...

North Attleboro, 1 @ Attleboro, 3 - Final - Attleboro erased a one-run deficit and took a lead all in one play in the fifth inning and that was enough for the Bombardiers to keep the Blue-Red Cup. In the bottom of the fifth, Kayla Goldrick and Lindsey Perry both reached after being hit by a pitch and freshman Rylie Camacho connected for a base hit to right field to bring Goldrick home to tie the game. Perry came around to score on an errant throw, which allowed Camacho to reach third. Camacho then came home after an another throw got away, putting the hosts ahead 3-1. Perry tossed a complete game for the Bombardiers, retiring the last 12 batters she faced. She also had four strikeouts with five hits allowed. The structure of the hydrogen bonded complex formed between $NH_{3}$ and HF has been determined by molecular beam electric resonance spectroscopy. The complex exhibits a rotational spectrum that is characteristic of a symmetric top, implying an effectively linear hydrogen bond. The rotational, centrifugal distortion, and nuclear quadrupole coupling constants have been precisely determined with values as follows: \[B = 7366.11(2)\ MHz, D_{J} = 28.3(20)\ KHz, (eQq)_{a} = -3.283(70)\ MHz.\] The electric dipole moment of the complex has also been determined, $\mu = 4.448(1)$ D, from measurements of the Stark effect. Assuming that the structure of ammonia is unchanged upon complex formation the N-F distance (2.660{\AA}) is found to be much shorter than has been predicted by recent \emph{ab initio} calculations ...

The high reactivity of CBMG stands out - one would expect tBuOCl to be actually a lot stronger source of Cl(+) than NCS or CBMG simply based on electronegativity (and the fact that CBMG is made from tBuOCl), and also NCS ought to be a slightly more powerful Cl(+) source than CBMG because succinimide anion is a better leaving group than guanidinide dicarbamate ester anion... Something else must going on and your kinetic effect study suggests that facile H(+) abstraction is the key difference. The definitive guide to creating fluorine-based compounds-and the materials of tomorrow. Discovered as an element by the French chemist Henri Moissan in 1886, through electrolysis of potassium fluoride in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride-le fluor, or fluorine, began its chemical history as a substance both elusive and dangerous. With a slight pale yellow hue, fluorine is at room temperature a poisonous diatomic gas. Resembling a spirit from a chemical netherworld, fluorine is highly reactive, difficult to handle, yet very versatile as a reagent-with the power to form compounds with almost any other element.. Comprising 20% of pharmaceutical products and 30% of agrochemical compounds, as well as playing a key role in electric cars, electronic devices, and space technology, compounds containing fluorine have grown in importance across the globe. Learning how to safely handle fluorine in the preparation of innovative new materials-with valuable new properties-is of critical importance to chemists ...

The stoichiometric use of CO enables the possibility for accessing 13C-isotopically labeled TFMK by switching to the use of 13COgen. ...
The chief chemical sign of fluorosis in severely affected cattle is lameness, which is frequently associated with marked skeletal abnormalities such as an increase in diameter of bones and well defined exostoses. Enlargement and gross exostoses in bovine limb bones (left) compared with normal bones -(right).Uncontaminated animal foodstuffs lie between 1 and 10 p.p.m. on a dry matter basis. Excessively high values up to 2000 p.p.m. have been reported (Green 1946) on herbage near sources of emission of fluorine compounds. Herbage and soil samples provide useful corroboration, but are not suitable alone for assessing degree and extent of contamination, since results will depend on climatic conditions around the time of sampling, on the direction of the prevailing winds, and on the topography of the surrounding terrain. It is difficult to suggest a minimum fluorine value for contaminated pastures at which clinical cases of fluorosis will occur, because of the variable factors first mentioned, and ...

The coatings are made by mixing some large polystyrene particles into Teflon, and then heating it - which removes the polystyrene and leaves behind large holes, both at the surface and deeper inside the coating.. Dr Steiner said: This surface porosity is what gives the coating its self-cleaning properties.. As well as easy clean surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom, we can foresee applications in the bio-medical field.. Imagine a bottle of very precious medicine. If its inside is covered by a super-hydrophobic surface, all its content can be reliably drained.. Dr Claudio Della Volpe, an applied physical chemistry researcher at the University of Trento Italy, said the uses of the coatings could be even more widespread.. Dr Della Volpe said: Only imagination limits the possible applications.. with thanks to Sarah Corcoran for the original article ...

We study the behaviour and ecology of diurnal and nocturnal bees and wasps, with the goal to understand how spatial and temporal resolution, colour vision and the absolute sensitivity are adapted to their diurnal and nocturnal lifestyles ...
Inducible and sell-specific gene KO with shRNA. For further reading:. http://cre.jax.org/introduction.html. http://link.springer.com/protocol/10.1385/1-59259-065-9:477#page-1. Update. I re-read OP question and, as commented to it, feel some confusion. So I would like to mention as well way to express mutated gene in specific tissue that, when expressed constitutively (all the time, everywhere), is lethal. Imagine some very strong oncogene. Or something like cell-toxic protein, e.g. chemically-activatable nitroreductase or light-activatable Killer-red. Or it might be mutated version of your favourite synaptic protein that, when expressed in all neurons, causes severe lethal phenotype.. What you do, is create transgenic animal with transgene-GFP fusion (nitroreductase, KillerRed, etc) that has floxed stop-codons in front, and cross that animal with transgenic with tissue-specific CreER (for example). What you get is animal that, when injected with tamoxifen, start to express mutated gene/toxic ...
AbstractGlycogen phosphorylase (GlyP) was the first allosteric enzyme to be described. Yet, the precise dynamic changes in solution phase structure and stability that underpin functional regulation have remained elusive. We have developed a new fully-automated and highly flexible implementation of hydrogen/deuterium-exchange mass spectrometry, operating in the millisecond regime. This enabled measurements of the solution phase local structural dynamics involved in allosteric regulation of GlyP. Here, we quantify GlyP structural dynamics in solution, describing correlated changes in structure in the activated (pSer14) and inhibited (glucose-6-phosphate bound) forms of the enzyme. The sensitivity of these measurements discerned that the 250s loop is natively disordered in the apo T-state, adopting a more ordered conformation in the active state. The quantitative change in stability of the 280s loop is identified, providing the first direct evidence of the entropic switch that sterically regulates ...

A new study published in Disease Models and Mechanisms, reports new tools for generating specifically targeted genetic mutations in bacteria, mammalian cells and mice. The new recombinase, Dre, is similar to its predecessor, Cre, but targets unique sites within DNA for recombination. It may be used in combination with currently available methods to produce more complex mouse models to understand disease.
The report provides a unique tool for evaluating the market, highlighting opportunities, and supporting strategic and tactical decision-making. This r
This thesis covers different aspects of the spectroscopy of molecules andmolecular clusters embedded in helium droplets. The interaction between the trappedmolecules and the host He clusters as well as the use of helium as a media for novelmatrix isolation spectroscopy experiments will be discussed.; The rovibrational spectroscopy of spherical top molecules in helium droplets shows the matrix effect on the free rotation. The effect of the both intrinsic moment of inertia as well as increase of the anisotropy of the helium-molecule interaction potential is discussed.; Large enhancement of the intramolecular coupling in silane molecules trapped inside He cluster was observed. The deperturbation analysis shows increase of the interaction coefficient between ν1 and ν3 vibrational modes by a factor of 100 in liquid helium as compared to the gas phase.; Study of HCl clusters in helium droplets shows the formation of the cyclic structures up to the hexamers. These results indicate a non-planar ...
This list of minerals containing Fluorine is built from the mindat.org locality database. This is based on the number of localities entered for mineral species and is therefore slanted towards minerals interesting to collectors with less coverage of common rock-forming-minerals so it does not give an undistorted distribution of Fluorine mineral species. It is more useful when comparing rare species rather than common species ...
