Applying fluoride varnish to the teeth is one of the easiest ways to prevent tooth decay and keep small cavities from getting bigger. Fluoride varnish is painted on the teeth and hardens as soon as saliva touches it. It can be applied as soon as babies get their first teeth. Learn more about fluoride varnish by viewing this fact sheet. Many babies and young children get fluoride varnish at the doctors office during routine check-ups. Doctors and some nurses can be trained to check the oral health of their patients and apply fluoride varnish. Smiles for Life, developed by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, is a Web-base self study oral health curriculum designed for primary care clinicians. One of its seven modules covers the use of fluoride varnish. Continuing education credits are available.. Purpose: The United States (U.S.) has a persistent problem of dental caries in primary teeth with a greater prevalence of dental caries found in minority and poor children. The majority of children in the U.S. experience dental caries in their primary teeth by age eight. This problem could be addressed by primary care providers applying fluoride varnish (FV) to childrens teeth starting at the age of primary tooth eruption. The causes of dental caries in childrens primary teeth are multifactorial and therefore require multiple interventions. Around the world providers are utilizing FV as an effective and easily administered strategy. This author implemented a quality improvement project of a FV application program in a Vermont pediatric practice, based on a United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guideline. Methods: After thorough preparation a staff training in FV application was done for providers and staff along with the pre-project questionnaire. The DNP student consulted with

A review of evidence-based literature indicates incomplete evidence for the efficacy of most measures currently used for caries prevention, with the exception of fluoride varnishes and the use of fluoride-based interventions for patients with hyposalivation. Not all fluoride agents and treatments are equal. Different fluoride compounds, different vehicles, and vastly different concentrations have been used with different frequencies and durations of application. These variables can influence the clinical outcome with respect to caries prevention and management. The efficacy of topical fluoride in caries prevention depends on a) the concentration of fluoride used, b) the frequency and duration of application, and to a certain extent, c) the specific fluoride compound used. The more concentrated the fluoride and the greater the frequency of application, the greater the caries reduction. Factors besides efficacy, such as practicality, cost, and compliance, influence the clinicians choice of preventive
The SEAL Dental Program is a school-based program that provides screenings, education, dental sealants and fluoride, as well as referrals to a dentist when necessary for students in 13 communities, in schools with a large share of low-income students.. The SEAL ("Seal, Educate, Advocate for Learning") program was begun in 2008 and provides dental sealants and topical fluoride to children. The program focuses on schools with high numbers of children who are eligible for the school lunch program and schools in communities with substantial numbers of children who are enrolled in MassHealth (the states Medicaid program). However, all children are eligible to receive services. Services are provided by dental hygienists and oral health specialists who work under the supervision of a dentist. The hygienists assess each childs oral health, apply a fluoride varnish on teeth, and, if warranted, place sealants (a thin plastic coating) to the back teeth. Topical fluoride and sealants both offer strong ...
The varnish is painted directly onto the teeth with a small brush, much like a nail polish application. It is much easier for young children to tolerate than fluoride trays. The fluoride varnish remains on the tooth surfaces for four to six hours. This facilitates maximal fluoride uptake and strengthens the tooths surface making it more resistant to the decay process. Fluoride varnish also minimizes the risk of inadvertent fluoride ingestion. The ADA considers fluoride varnish to be safe and efficacious as part of a caries prevention program that includes caries diagnosis, risk assessment, and regular dental care. Studies show that toddlers who have fluoride varnish applied to their teeth by a dentist twice a year are four times less likely to get cavities in their baby teeth and adolescents in orthodontic treatment can reduce areas of weakened enamel during treatment by up to 76% with more frequent varnish applications. Remember, Fluoride alone will not prevent tooth decay! It is important to ...

Enamel demineralization is frequently encountered in dental practice. Histologically, hypomineralization is the common feature and several etiologies stand behind their clinical appearance. Recently, resin infiltration technique was introduced to mask these enamel lesions.
Within the limitations of the study, it can be concluded that all the three remineralizing agents used in the study could effectively remineralize artificial enamel caries and showed improvement in color change and fluoresence as compared to the baseline. Therefore they can be effectively used for t …

Gastric distress - including nausea, pain, and vomiting - is one the most common side effects from professional application of "fluoride gels" at the dentist. Patients receiving fluoride gels can swallow more than 20 mg of fluoride from a single treatment - doses that far exceed the doses that can form toxic concentrations of hydrofluoric acid in the stomach. While the dentists now use measures to reduce the amount of fluoride that is swallowed, it is estimated that children still swallow an average of 7.7 mg per treatment, while adults swallow an average of 10.3 mg. (Johnston 1994). Such doses still exceed the doses that cause damage to the gastric mucosa. Indeed, as the data in the table below shows, a single dose of just 3 mg (the lowest dose tested) can cause widespread erosion of the gastric lining. (Spak 1990).. Gastric Symptoms following application of Fluoride Gel:. "[T]he most likely symptoms to manifest in patients from professionally applied topical fluorides are nausea and possibly ...

Fluoride is the most effective agent available to help prevent tooth decay. It is a mineral that is naturally present in varying amounts in almost all foods and water supplies. The benefits of fluoride have been well known for over 50 years and are supported by many health and professional organizations.. Fluoride works in two ways:. Topical fluoride strengthens the teeth once they have erupted by seeping into the outer surface of the tooth enamel, making the teeth more resistant to decay. We gain topical fluoride by using fluoride containing dental products such as toothpaste, mouth rinses, and gels. Dentists and dental hygienists generally recommend that children have a professional application of fluoride twice a year during dental check-ups.. Systemic fluoride strengthens the teeth that have erupted as well as those that are developing under the gums. We gain systemic fluoride from most foods and our community water supplies. It is also available as a supplement in drop or gel form and can ...

The most notable findings to date, however, were published in 2002 and 2006 by a team of Polish researchers. The researchers reported that exposing ram semen to just 0.38 parts per million (20 umol/L) of fluoride for five hours was sufficient to "cause a statistically significant decrease in the motility of spermatoza and the number of intact acrosomes." (Zakrzewska 2002). The authors noted that these changes "undoubtedly affect the physiological function of the sperm.". The Polish teams findings are of particular importance when considering that from the 1960s to the 1990s, the use of high-concentration topical fluoride gels produced blood concentrations in boys and men that far exceeded 0.38 ppm. In tests on both children and adults, the use of topical fluoride gels at the dental office has been found to produce blood fluoride concentrations as high as 1.2 ppm, or four times higher than the concentration found to damage sperm. (Ekstrand 1980, 1981). The studies have also found that the blood ...

He laughs) Of course, we have developed numerous new formulations that, apart from the amine fluoride, also protect teeth better against acid attacks and the gums better against inflammation. We test new raw materials such as improved cleaning agents or flavors that give a fresher breath. We also attach importance to more sustainable sourcing. And when there are changes in legislation or in the production process, we are in demand to adapt formulations. We work closely with Knowledge Management and Scientific Affairs to provide scientific evidence of the advertised product features. And there are numerous interesting research projects, which we run together with universities or test institutes, for instance, to better understand the de- and remineralization process that constantly takes place in tooth enamel. Today we can prevent demineralization or even reverse white spot lesions. But thats it. Beyond this point, its still only drill & fill. So, obviously, we dream of a product that can ...

There is no question that we live in an amazing world as it relates to dental technology, dental materials, and our ability to treat our patients. Adhesive resin materials and techniques have been a significant accomplishment, allowing us to practice minimal-intervention dentistry and conserve tooth structure. The minimally invasive approach to dentistry is certainly here, and we practice it every day in our offices. How do we take this approach to the next step and go beyond bonding? It has always been my dream to be able to treat diseased tooth structure without having to use invasive techniques. If you perform an invasive procedure into these white spot lesions, and the tooth is a virgin tooth, you will have to restore it, knowing that the future of this tooth will include repeating this restoration a number of times over the patient s lifetime. The restoration will get bigger and bigger, someday possibly involving the pulp. If you do nothing, chances are the lesion will cavitate anyway, but ...
