Taken together our results suggest that supraorbital neurostimulation using the Cefaly® device decreases arousal and induces fatigue. This cannot be considered at this stage as a hypnotic effect in the sense of inducing sleep and decreasing sleep latency but rather as a sedative effect in terms of a reduction of alertness and vigilance. Interestingly, this is only the case with high (120 Hz-HFN) and not with low frequency (2.5 Hz-LFN) stimulation. LFN even has an opposite effect in one psychophysical test, the critical flicker fusion frequency. Below we will examine these results in more detail and speculate on possible mechanisms.. In fact, the Ferry-Porter function is not physically realizable as a linear model. So we had another eventful doctor appointment today. And all I can say is that Brian + Lindsey = nothing simple. I had my 8 week ultrasound at my REs office and we were hoping for a definite answer of 1 or 2 babies. Well we DO have one very healthy little one. The baby is measuring 12.7mm (up from 6.3mm just 6 days ago) and with a strong heartbeat of 167. And my RE said (after telling us that the baby was 12.7mm) that we have a good size baby for my gestational age...at least he/she is healthy so far!!! BUT the other baby is still growing too and for a moment my RE thought he saw a flicker (meaning heartbeat). At that my heart started beating in overdrive and according to the hubby...his stopped. Good thing he is a man of many lives because his heart has stopped too many times to count over the last few weeks. One of the motivations for studying rate-dependent neural responses is to define and localize neural substrates of psychophysical performance. Temporal sensitivity for visual stimuli has been intensively investigated behaviorally. Its inverted U-shape usually peaks around 10 Hz and reaches up to 30 to 50 Hz for strong low-level stimuli (Hart, 1987). Performance involving grouping or categorization on more complex stimuli in rapid serial visual presentation becomes virtually impossible once rates exceed 10 Hz (Holcombe, 2009). In our paradigm, perception at higher frequencies no longer preserves a sensation of alternating semantic content but instead fuses the face and house image and unties this percept from that of a persistent scene flicker. This effect that we deliberately sought to create motivated the use of a single picture in each category (Fig. 1). Four subjects participated in an MOL-like nutrition study using freeze-dehydrated, bite-sized Apollo food. The two experimental subjects were confined in a small (300 cu. ft.) altitude chamber operated at 27,000 feet with an atmosphere of 70% oxygen and 30% helium. Psychomotor testing was conducted in 4-hour sessions three times a day, every other day, alternating with two control subjects. No major psychomotor changes were observed, except on the short-term memory task, which appeared to reflect motivational factors. Correlations between the first half hour and the remainder of the testing session ranged from -.21 to +.96 and were scattered across that range. It was concluded that a daily half-hour psychomotor test of space crews is probably not sufficiently stable to meet biomedical monitoring requirements. (Author)(*PSYCHOMOTOR TESTS

Additional notes on the closed bore (cylindrical) configuration. The design of cylindrical magnets is not quite as simple as pictured above. A single continuous solenoidal winding will only produce a completely homogenous central field if infinite in length. For coils truncated to the 2-3 meter range, a single solenoid would not provide a sufficiently uniform field for MR imaging. The homogeneity problem is solved by breaking up the main coil into 6-10 separate windings with gaps in between as shown below. This configuration maintains symmetry of the field along the z-axis (Bo direction), minimizes fringe fields at the ends of the scanner, and improves homogeneity centrally. Samples of lyophilized ovalbumin were irradiated, under vacuum in a high energy, uniform field of γ-rays, to absorb dosages of 30, 60 and 100 electron volts/molecule (6.5, 13.0 and 21.7 × 106 rads). Solutions of the γ-irradiated ovalbumins were fractionated by promptly precipitating the radiation-denatured molecules at the isoelectric point of native ovalbumin, and by heating the neutral systems at 50°, 60° and 68°C and by precipitating the thermolabile constituents at the isoelectric point. Quantitative serologic tests on the solutions revealed that the irradiated ovalbumins had a dose-related loss of correspondence to native protein. Removal of the radiation-denatured and thermolabile constituents improved the correspondence of the supernatants to the native solutions. Supernatants from native and irradiated preparations, heated at 68°C, showed thermal damage serologically. From the top here, the flicker-chip surface is clearly visible, as are the three gold wire bonds.. One curious thing: it looks like there are additional unbonded pads on the chip. Its not obvious what those are for, but heres a guess: This little "candle flicker" chip has other functions as well, which could be selected by hooking up a wire bond to one of those other pads. Perhaps this chip is also used (for example) in simple "self blinking" LEDs that flash at a steady rate. There is an interesting consequence of the way that the flicker chip works. There are only two leads, and when the LED is turned on or off, the total current through the legs of the LED is switched as well. This means that- even ignoring the yellow light coming out -we have an unusual electronic component that produces a seemingly-random sequence of currents when voltage is applied.
