One potential solution to reduce the risk associated with commercial fishing operations is to design commercial fishing gear that is more selective in terms of interactions between Atlantic sturgeon and commercial fisheries. Given this conservation and management need, the overarching goal was to reduce Atlantic sturgeon fishery interactions and maintain southern flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma) catch in North Carolina. The present study was undertaken to elicit the temporal sequence of changes in cardiovascular and respiratory function during aestivation. Twelve lungfish (2-6 kg) equipped with ECG electrodes, arterial and buccal cannulae, were studied while aestivating in mud or in artificial cloth-bag nests. The periods of observation ranged from 0.5 to 9.5 months. The mean arterial blood pressure gradually decreased from control values of 20-28 mm Hg to a range of 14-18 mmHg during the first 30 days of aestivation, whereas the heart rate dropped more gradually (22-30 beats/min to 11-16 beats/min in 6o days). Three demersal species in the northern hemisphere are; Artediellus atlanticus, Myoxocephalus scorpius and Leptagonus decagonus. Accumulation of some heavy metals (copper, iron, manganese, nickel and zinc) and its effect on the hematological indices on the freshwater fish (Oreochromis niloticus) were studied. Fish Samples were collected from the River Nile near El- Kanater El-Khyria and contaminated water from Iron and Steel Basin in El-Safe Village near Helwan, south of Cairo. Results of this study showed that there was a significant difference between the water qualities indices among the two different locations. Meanwhile, fish samples that collected from polluted location showed high values for the hematological indices namely hemoglobin (Hb), red blood count (RBC), hematocrit (Hct), white blood cell count (WBC) and erythrocyte. The pattern of nasopharyngeal carcinoma incidence in China reflects the pattern of consumption of salted fish. Eight case-control studies consistently demonstrate that consumption of Chinese-style salted fish is strongly related to risk for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The effect remained in studies that controlled for other risk factors. A significant dose-response relationship is seen between frequency of intake and risk for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and the association is especially strong for intake of salted fish during childhood. Investigating the macroevolutionary processes that may have contributed to the radiation of notothenioid fishes requires a well-resolved phylogenetic hypothesis. To date published molecular and morphological hypotheses of notothenioids are largely congruent, however, there are some areas of significant disagreement regarding higher-level relationships. Also, there are critical areas of the notothenioid phylogeny that are unresolved in both molecular and morphological phylogenetic analyses. Sturgeon first appear in the fossil record in the Triassic Period just over 200 million years ago and are among the most primitive of the bony fishes. Despite their large size and historic presence along the East Coast, Atlantic sturgeon were not targeted for their meat and caviar as a commercial fishery until 1880. By 1905 they had declined to less than one percent of their pre-fishing abundance but the fishery continued. Prior to 1980, there had been very little research on Atlantic sturgeon, primarily limited to documenting landing location and poundage, maximum longevity, or weight of eggs per fish. By 1990 most research into Atlantic sturgeon population dynamics had been focused on fisheries, and specifically, on when, where, and in what condition they were available for capture. Coastal exposure may affect the structure of littoral fish assemblages. To evaluate its effects, fish assemblages associated with shallow (0-3m depth) rocky reefs were investigated by visual census at the Asinara Island National Park (northwestern Sardinia, Italy, Mediterranean Sea) during autumn 2003. Distribution patterns of ichthyofauna in sheltered and exposed rocky reefs were assessed over the spatial scales of locations (i.e. kilometres) and sites (i.e. hundreds of metres). Overall, 38 fish taxa belonging to 17 families were recorded, with Labridae, Sparidae and Serranidae being the families with the most species. Univariate analyses showed that the average density of Labridae and Serranidae was significantly greater at sheltered locations, while particulate organic matter feeders (i.e. Mugilidae) were more abundant at the exposed ones. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) have been severely overexploited and are currently at historic population lows, having declined 90% in the North Sea and 99% off northeast Newfoundland in recent decades. Slow rates of recovery and continuing declines may be attributable to depensation, defined as a reduction in per capita growth rate concomitant with reduced population size. Several potential causes of depensation relate to low mating success and consequent reduced production of offspring. We explore the empirical basis of one of these in Atlantic cod using egg fertilization and male abundance data obtained from 21 experimental populations generated by three independent research programmes. We find support for the hypotheses that (a) fertilization rate declines with abundance and (b) variance in fertilization rate increases as population size declines. In this study, the concentration of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) were determined in fish samples, Labeo umbratus and Carp, collected from the Vaal River in South Africa. Ultrasonic-assisted extraction technique was used to extract the organic contaminants from fish samples, and the resulting extract was purified by sulphuric acid lipid removal followed by Strata X-cartridge SPE clean-up. The APEs and BFRs were derivatized using heptafluorobutyric anhydride before analysis with GC-MS. In both types of fish samples, lower oligomers of APEs were more abundant than the higher oligomers, while HBCD, BDE99 and PBB101 were the dominant BFRs. The concentrations of these pollutants ranged from 1.061 ng/g lipids (t-BP) in Labeo umbratus to 11.860 ng/g lipids (HBCD) in Carp.
