The roles of different dietary proteins in the aetiology of type 2 diabetes (T2D) remain unclear. We investigated the associations of dietary proteins with the risk of incident T2D in Finnish men from the prospective Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study. The study included 2332 men aged 42-60 years at the baseline examinations in 1984-1989. Protein intakes were calculated from 4-d dietary records. Incident T2D was determined by self-administered questionnaires, fasting blood glucose measurements, 2-h oral glucose tolerance tests, and with national registers. The multivariable-adjusted risk of T2D on the basis of protein intakes was compared by the Cox proportional hazard ratios (HR). During the mean follow-up of 19·3 years, 432 incident T2D cases were identified. Total, animal, meat or dairy product protein intakes were not associated with risk of T2D when the potential confounders were accounted for. Plant (multivariable-adjusted extreme-quartile HR 0·65; 95 % CI 0·42, 1·00; P ...

BACKGROUND:. Considerable interest and controversy exist concerning the role of psychosocial factors in the pathogenesis of ischemic heart disease. Studies of the prevalence, incidence, and mortality from ischemic heart disease have implicated socioeconomic status, job strain, Type A behavior, hostility, social support, and other variables.. The study used baseline data previously collected as part of the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study conducted in eastern Finland by the Research Institute of Public Health and the Research Institute of Exercise Medicine, both in Kuopio, and the Finnish National Public Health Institute in Helsinki. The area of eastern Finland lies within the area of greatest morbidity and mortality from ischemic heart disease in Finland, was part of the reference area for the evaluation of the North Karelia Project, and is part of the World Health Organization MONICA project.. DESIGN NARRATIVE:. The study was longitudinal in design. Physical examinations were ...
The Kuopio ischaemic heart disease risk factor study is a population study designed to investigate risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis, and related outcomes in men from eastern Finland.18 The baseline examinations were carried out between March 1984 and December 1989. The study sample included 3235 eligible men aged 42, 48, 54, or 60 at the baseline examination; 2682 (82.9%) participated. Men with symptomatic coronary heart disease (n = 92) or ischaemia on maximal exercise testing (n = 359),19 or both (n = 585), were excluded from the current analyses. Of the remaining 1646 men, 1605 had data on plasma ascorbate concentration at baseline.. The examination protocol and measurements have been described.10 11 12 13 Plasma ascorbate concentrations were determined by a chromatographic method in deep frozen samples, which were stabilised in 5% metaphosphoric acid immediately after sampling.20 The coefficient of variation between 12 batches was 7.2%.20. Plasma ascorbate ...
Noncommunicable diseases (NCD), also known as chronic diseases, disease groups such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, and age-related cognitive decline. They are the major cause of all deaths globally, increasing rapidly in many middle- and low income countries. They also carry an enormous economic burden worldwide. The Institute of Public Health and Clinical Nutrition at the University of Eastern Finland is internationally well known for its top quality cardiovascular research dating back to 1970s. The world famous North Karelia Project was launched here in 1972. More recently, our flagship international public health research has been the KIHD Study (Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study), which, despite its name, does not focus only on cardiovascular diseases. With the use of vast KIHD data and linkages to comprehensive national health registries, we are able to examine a wide range of potential risk factors and complex paths of various ...
The sources of these fatty acids are fish and fish oils.. Type 2 diabetes is becoming increasingly widespread throughout the world, including Finland. Overweight is the most significant risk factor, which means that diet and other lifestyle factors play important roles in the development of type 2 diabetes. Earlier research has established that weight management, exercise and high serum linoleic acid concentrations, among other things, are associated with reduced risk of diabetes. However, findings on how fish consumption or long-chain omega-3 fatty acids affect the risk of diabetes have been highly contradictory. A protective link has mainly been observed in Asian populations, whereas a similar link has not been observed in European or US studies - and some studies have even linked a high consumption of fish to increased diabetes risk.. Ongoing at the University of Eastern Finland, the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study (KIHD) determined the serum omega-3 fatty acid concentrations ...

We ascertained incident cases of diabetes from the National Hospital Discharge Register and the National Social Insurance Institutions Drug Register (17, 18, 23, 24, 25). These register data were linked to the risk factor survey data with the unique personal identification numbers assigned to every resident of Finland. Antidiabetic drugs prescribed by a physician are free of charge in Finland, subject to approval of the application to the Social Insurance Institution with a case history prepared by the treating physician attached. The diagnosis of diabetes is confirmed on the basis of the World Health Organization criteria: one or more classical symptom plus a fasting plasma glucose level of 7.0 mmol/liter or more, or the oral glucose tolerance test of 11.1 mmol/liter or more; at least one increased plasma glucose concentration and a fasting plasma glucose level of 7.0 mmol/liter or more, or the oral glucose tolerance test of 11.1 mmol/liter or more in the absence of symptoms; or treatment with ...
The Haveri Au-Cu deposit is located in southern Finland about 175 km north of Helsinki. It occurs on the northern edge of the continental island arc-type, volcano-sedimentary Tampere Schist Belt (TSB) within the Palaeoproterozoic Svecofennian Domain (2.0 - 1.75 Ga) of the Fennoscandian Shield. The 1.99 Ga Haveri Formation forms the base of the supracrustal stratigraphy consisting of metavolcanic pillow lavas and breccias passing upwards into intercalated metatuffs and metatuffites. There is a continuous gradation upwards from the predominantly volcaniclastic Haveri Formation into the overlying epiclastic meta-greywackes of the Osara Formation. The Haveri deposit is hosted in this contact zone. This supracrustal sequence has been intruded concordantly by quartz-feldspar porphyries.. Approximately 1.89 Ga ago, high crustal heat flow led to the generation and emplacement of voluminous synkinematic, I-type, magnetite-series granitoids of the Central Finland Granitoid Complex (CFGC), resulting in ...

This study is the first to analyze a comprehensive range of maternal, birth, and childhood measures in relation to adult BP from a large well-characterized general population-based cohort studied since early pregnancy. Our main findings were that (1) the association between birth weight and SBP was inverse-linear, particularly for males, with or without adjustment for current BMI; (2) the association for DBP was inverse but weaker than for SBP; (3) other birth variables (gestational age, birth length, ponderal index, BW-GA) showed a similar pattern with BP, although less consistent than birth weight; (4) among females, the inverse association between gestational age and BP was stronger than that for birth weight; (5) infant change-up growth associated positively with BP; and (6) association of some early life factors (gestational age, ponderal index) with BP seems to be stronger in leaner adults.. A meta-analysis by Huxley et al22 of 82 studies with data on birth weight and BP concluded that ...

In 2010, Finlands greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 74.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2 eq.). They rose by a total of 8.5 million carbon dioxide tonnes from the year before, exceeding the commitment level of the Kyoto Protocol by around five per cent. The data are based on the preliminary estimate to be submitted by Statistics Finland to the European Commission on 15 January 2012 concerning emissions in 2010.. In the energy sector, emissions increased by 15 per cent from the previous year. Emissions from industrial processes rose by eight per cent. Emissions from agriculture and use of solvents and other products also increased slightly. Emissions in the waste sector remained unchanged. Net sinks in the Land use, Land-use Change and Forestry sector (LULUCF) dropped by 40 per cent mainly because of increased fellings.. Development of greenhouse gas emissions by sector in Finland 1990-2010. ...

BACKGROUND: Early life risk factors are associated with cardiometabolic disease, but have not been fully studied in atrial fibrillation (AF). There are discordant results from existing studies of birth weight and AF, and the impact of maternal body size, gestational age, placental size, and birth length is unknown.. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Helsinki Birth Cohort Study includes 13 345 people born as singletons in Helsinki in the years 1934-1944. Follow-up was through national registries, and ended on December 31, 2013, with 907 incident cases. Cox regression analyses stratified on year of birth were constructed for perinatal variables and incident AF, adjusting for offspring sex, gestational age, and socioeconomic status at birth. There was a significant U-shaped association between birth weight and AF (P for quadratic term=0.01). The lowest risk of AF was found among those with a birth weight of 3.4 kg (3.8 kg for women [85th percentile] and 3.0 kg for men [17th percentile]). High maternal body ...

Many countries of the world can be divided into distinct geographic regions, in each of which some physical characteristic is dominant, almost to the exclusion of others. In Finland, the same physical characteristics are common to each of the four geographic regions into which the country is divided. Regional differences in Finland lie, therefore, in subtle combinations of physical qualities. In archipelago Finland, rock and water are dominant. Coastal Finland consists of broad clay plains where agriculture plays a leading role. The interior Finnish lake district supports extensive forests. Upland Finland is covered by Arctic scrub. Finland lacks true arctic tundra but has alpine tundra on top of fells.. Archipelago Finland, consisting of thousands of islands and skerries, extends from the southwestern coast out into the Baltic Sea. It includes the strategically significant Åland Islands, positioned at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia. After World War I, both Finland and Sweden laid claim to ...

Aro compared population information provided by Statistics Finland concerning the countrys 20 largest cities in 2000-2006.. "They all gain population through immigration. The starting level is low", he says.. The growth has also been noted by Pekka Myrskylä, head of development at Statistics Finland, who says that immigration is numerically greater now than ever before. Immigration now counts for nearly half of population growth. The other half is from births.. Demographers speak about net immigration. This refers to the difference between immigration and emigration.. In the 21st century so far, net immigration has tripled in Finland.. However, the figure also includes Finns who return home after spending time abroad. They account for 40 per cent of those moving back to Finland.. "Immigration is very significant in old industrial cities and provincial cities which have suffered from net emigration, and where, in some cases, the birthrate has turned negative", Aro says.. Such cities include ...

The aims of this thesis were to describe the overall study design of the Finnish Prenatal Study of Bipolar Disorders (FIPS-B) and demographic characteristics of the sample. Furthermore, it was aimed to examine the association of parental age, parental age difference, perinatal complications and maternal smoking during pregnancy with BPD. This thesis is based on FIPS-B, a nested case-control study using several nationwide registers. The cases included all people born in Finland between January 1st 1983 and December 31st 1998 and diagnosed with BPD according to the Finnish Hospital Discharge Register (FHDR) before December 31st 2008. Controls for this study were people who were without BPD, schizophrenia or diagnoses related to these disorders, identified from the Population Register Centre (PRC), and matched two-fold to the cases on sex, date of birth (+/- 30 days), and residence in Finland on the first day of diagnosis of the matched case. Conditional logistic regression models were used to ...

Summary: The incidence of hip fracture was estimated in 6,370 women born in Helsinki between 1934 and 1944. Women in the lowest quarter of adiposity gain had an 8.2-fold increase in hip fracture risk compared with those in the highest quarter (p | 0.001). These data point to a relationship between childhood growth and fracture risk during later life. Introduction: Previous findings show that discordance between childhood increase in height and weight is associated with an increased risk of osteoporotic fractures during later life. Methods: We studied 6,370 women born in Helsinki between 1934 and 1944. Each womans birth weight and length at birth was recorded, as well as her height and weight through childhood. We identified the occurrence of hip fracture through the National Finnish Hospital discharge register. Results: There were 49 hip fractures in the 6,370 women over 187,238 person-years of follow-up. Hip fracture was associated with increasing Z-scores for height between 1 and 12 years, not

Cerebral cavernous malformation of the occipital lobe Cavernomas in the occipital lobe are relatively rare. Because of the proximity to the visual cortex and incoming subcortical tracts, microsurgical removal of occipital cavernomas may be associated with a risk of visual field defects. Of 390 consecutive patients with cavernomas who were treated at Helsinki University Central Hospital between 1980 and 2011, 19 (5%) had occipital cavernomas. Sixteen patients (4%) were surgically treated and a…

Finland has a history of more effective public health interventions than most countries have been able to achieve. The total annual alcohol consumption has risen from 7.6 litres (in 1985) to 10.0 litres of 100% alcohol equivalent per capita in 2010. There has been a small reduction in alcohol consumption in the recent years. Alcohol use is highest in the Northern Finland with 10,9 liters and lowest at the Åland Islands with 5,7 liters per person. Although the consumption is average to other western countries, binge drinking with especially teenagers and becoming intoxicated has remained as a characteristic of Finnish drinking habits. Finland has a national alcohol programme to reduce the long-term effects of alcohol. The World Health Organization has published a list of countries by alcohol consumption. Smoking among adults has shown a marked decline over the past thirty years in most OECD countries. Much of this decline also in Finland can be attributed to policies aimed at reducing tobacco ...
Intestinal Microbiota-Generated Metabolite Trimethylamine-N-Oxide and 5-Year Mortality Risk in Stable Coronary Artery Disease: The Contributory Role of Intestinal Microbiota in a COURAGE-Like Patient Cohort.. Previous studies suggest that high circulating levels of trimethylamine N-oxide(TMAO) increase the risk of heart disease. In some people, TMAO levels increase after the consumption of foods that are rich in choline.. This observational study showed that elevated TMAO levels were associated with a higher risk of death among patients with heart disease (stable coronary artery disease).. Dietary Quality Indices in Relation to Cardiometabolic Risk among Finnish Children Aged 6-8 Years - the PANIC study.. This observational study examined the association of heart disease risk with the results of 4 dietary quality indices in Finnish children. Reaching the goal will require reinforcing peoples positive attitudes to a smoke-free lifestyle; prevent young people from starting to smoke and strengthening the implementation of the Tobacco Act.. Finlands determination to curb smoking made David Timberlake pay attention. He is Professor of Health Sciences at the University of California in the United States.. "Finland is a very interesting country in this respect. It is one of the four countries in the world to have such an ambitious goal. However, Finland is the first country to take practical measures. On paper, Finlands approach appears to be effective in reducing smoking rates, but rather conventional. Some researchers have questioned whether conventional approaches will be able to drive smoking rates down to the single digits," says ...
The Swedish Party (1870-1906), a parliamentary elite party based on members in the Diet of Finland, is the historical predecessor of the Swedish Peoples Party of Finland. It was a part of the Svecoman movement and its main policy was opposition of the Fennoman movement.. Unlike Fennomans who were largely liberal on other matters than the language question, the Svecoman were conservative. Axel Lille and Axel Olof Freudenthal are often considered as some of the main "founding fathers" of the movement. Most members of the Liberal Party joined the Swedish Party in the 1880s, after the Liberals ceased to exist as a distinct party. The Swedish Peoples Party of Finland was founded in the 1906 party congress of the Swedish Party, making it one of the oldest parties in Finland. The first leader of Swedish Peoples Party was Axel Lille.. The current leader of the party is Anna-Maja Henriksson.[12] In the Parliament of Finland the representative for Åland is usually included in SFPs parliamentary ...

Background: A reform to Dental Care legislation in 2002 abolished age limits restricting adults use of public dental services in Finland. In the Public Dental Service (PDS) unit of Espoo, the proportion of adult patients rose from 36% to 57%. The aim of this study was to investigate heavy use of dental services by adults and its determinants. Methods: A longitudinal cohort study was undertaken based on a PDS patient register. Of all adults who attended the PDS in Espoo in 2004, those who had six or more visits (n=3,173) were assigned to the heavy user group and a comparison group of low users (n=22,820) had three or fewer dental visits. A sample of 320 patients was randomly selected from each group. Baseline information (year 2004) on age, sex, number and type of visit, oral health status and treatment provided was collected from treatment records. Each group was followed-up for five years and information on the number and types of visit was recorded for each year from 2005 to 2009. Results: ...

The origins of the Finnish people are still a matter of conjecture, although many scholars argue that their original home was in what is now west-central Siberia. The Finns arrived in their present territory thousands of years ago, pushing the indigenous Lapps into the more remote northern regions. Finnish and Lappish--the language of Finlands small Lapp minority--both are Finno-Ugric languages and are in the Uralic rather than the Indo-European family. Finlands nearly 700-year association with the Kingdom of Sweden began in 1154 with the introduction of Christianity by Swedens King Eric. During the ensuing centuries, Finland played an important role in the political life of the Swedish-Finnish realm, and Finnish soldiers often predominated in Swedish armies. Finns also formed a significant proportion of the first "Swedish" settlers in 17th-century America. Following Finlands incorporation into Sweden in the 12th century, Swedish became the dominant language, although Finnish recovered its ...
In the research, fine, atomic-scale needles were pushed onto crystal surfaces. The sudden movement of the needle has traditionally been understood in terms of the movement of dislocations in the crystal structure. The results achieved in the project, however, suggest that it may in semiconductors be a question of a crystalline-to-crystalline phase transition. The discovery may in the future enable controlled structure transformation.. The results of the molecular dynamic simulations by Dr Dariusz Chrobak and Professor Roman Nowak from the Nordic Hysitron Laboratory of Helsinki University of Technology, together with Professor Kai Nordlund from the Helsinki University Accelerator Laboratory were published in Physical Review Letters on 26 January 2007. The Nordic Hysitron Laboratory (NHL) international research group is part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Helsinki University of Technology. The main target of NHL is mechanical characterisation of advanced materials and ...

Neil has posted here several times about the Northern Lights, and each time he does, I am reminded of the fact that I have never seen them. This bothers me. Seeing the Northern Lights, in fact photographing them, has long been a life list goal of mine, and the fact Ive never seen anything other than pictures bothers me. Well, pictures is what I have, so for now I have to stick to them. As you probably know, to see the Northern Lights, you have to go North. Easy enough, right. But where? Well, Canada is a good start. But another place, where you can get not just a wonderful full of the lights, but also have a wonderful travel experience, is Finland. Finland has long long been on my list of MUST-VISIT countries. No question about it. Ive wanted to walk the cobblestone roads of Helsinki and sip aquavit there (not to mention check out the lovely Finnish women) for much of my life. And as I say, now I have another reason to go. Here, see what I mean. Check out this series of amazing photos of the ...

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Leave it to the Finns to put a chill on things.. As euro-zone finance ministers gathered in Poland Friday to discuss how best to salvage the continents shaky monetary coalition, Finland wants guarantees. Read about the meeting in Wroclaw, Poland.. Before another hard-earned euro goes toward bailing out profligate spenders down south, Finland insists the loans be backed by hard assets.. In the world of European finance, especially when dealing with something as delicate as sovereign debt, this is downright rude behavior. But its also refreshing to hear a voice outside the French-German monetary debate society stand up and say, "Enough, already!", even if it raises a major stumbling block in the effort to keep Greece from defaulting on its debt.. The message Finlands Finance Minister Jutta Urpilainen brought to the meeting is aimed not just at Greece, but at all of the PIIGS - Portugal, Italy, Ireland Greece and Spain. And because Finlands economy bears a far ...

Photo submitted by Pekka Tahkola, "Im happy to live in the worlds best winter cycling city, Oulu, Finland. Of all trips 22% are made by bicycle (yearly average) and people cycle even through harshest winter with their regular bicycles, such as mine here which is a Swedish-made Svalan, from about 1959. An intensive network of about 800km of separated bicycle paths makes it possible to maintain bike routes in excellent condition. The maintenance of main routes is prioritized over driveways, and they have to be cleaned before 7am and 3pm in case of snowfall. Located 200km south of the arctic circle, Oulu enjoys rather cold weather, for example the average temperature in February is -14°C (~7F).". BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Diet during pregnancy and lactation may have a role in the development of allergic diseases. There are few human studies on the topic, especially focusing on food allergies. We sought to study the associations between maternal diet during pregnancy and lactation and cows milk allergy (CMA) in offspring. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A population-based birth cohort with human leukocyte antigen-conferred susceptibility to type 1 diabetes was recruited in Finland between 1997 and 2004 (n=6288). Maternal diet during pregnancy and lactation was assessed by a validated, 181-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Register-based information on diagnosed CMA was obtained from the Social Insurance Institution and completed with parental reports. The associations between maternal food consumption and CMA were assessed using logistic regression, comparing the highest and the lowest quarters to the middle half of consumption. RESULTS: Consumption of milk products in the highest ...

Renal transplant recipients have a markedly increased risk of premature cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared with the general population, although considerably lower than that of patients receiving maintenance haemodialysis. CVD in transplant recipients is poorly characterised and differs from the nonrenal population, with a much higher proportion of fatal to nonfatal cardiac events. In addition to traditional ischaemic heart disease risk factors such as age, gender, diabetes and smoking, there are additional factors to consider in this population such as the importance of hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy and uraemic cardiomyopathy. There are factors specific to transplantation such immunosuppressive therapies and graft dysfunction which contribute to this altered risk profile. However, understanding and treatment is limited by the absence of large randomised intervention trials addressing risk factor modification, with the exception of the ALERT study. The approach to managing these ...

The age of students completing vocational secondary education varies a lot among the OECD countries. In Finland the proportion of those who graduate at a more mature age is remarkably high. While the average age of graduation is 22 years in OECD countries, in Finland the studies are completed at the age of 28. For example, in Israel and Korea all graduates are under 20. In general, at the upper secondary level there is much greater variation in vocational programmes than in general education as far as the age of graduates is concerned. ...

Ferries to Stockholm go from Helsinki and Turku. The latter is considerably cheaper. Both ferries also stop in Maarianhamina (Ahvenanmaa), or Mariehamn (Åland), as its Swedish-speaking population calls it. The two companies which run ferries between Finland and Sweden are Viking Line and Silja Line. Both of the companies are focused on bringing the customers a cruise-experience, and are bound to be tacky. Viking Line sells cheaper tickets without a cabin, too, which would be rather useless on the daytime trips between Turku and Stockholm anyway. As of August 2009, a morning ferry from Stockholm to Turku costs 15 euros, and Stockholm-Helsinki - 55 euros (both without a cabin, although prices vary according to season. Silja Line is the posher of the two, and thus more expensive. Its still tacky, though. The Viking Line cruise ships have free tourist maps of Turku at their information desks on board. Be aware, though, that if you take a daytime cruise (which is about half the price), you will ...

This project being run by Professor Kuikka is one of the four projects coordinated by Finland in the BONUS research programme. In total, 16 multidisciplinary international research projects are being funded in the programme. Research funding organisations from the nine Baltic Sea countries are behind this new Baltic Sea Research Programme. Total project funding will be approximately 60 million euros between 2010 and 2016. The EU Commission is also taking part in the funding. The Finnish funding organisation is the Academy of Finland.. The environmental decision model for the Gulf of Finland gathers together available scientific information using probability calculation. It combines the risks stemming from different fields: fishing, eutrophication, oils spills, dioxins and climate change.. According to Kuikka, this research project will enable more effective scientific learning by producing tools by which old and new information can be combined. This approach is based on probability models ...

When reading the article by Tuuminen and Rinne, including two case reports on serious health seque-lae due to mold exposure in two Finnish cohorts, we find serious flaws in the application of statistical and epidemiological methods, as well as the respective causal interpretations. Observations of mucosal irritation, respiratory, neurological, skin and other symptoms, in the first case report, which portrays a family, add to the current evidence, that dampness and mold in the indoor environment are a serious health risk, emphasizing the need for exposure cessation and prompt reme-diation (1). Unnecessarily and unfortunately for the family it took four years to find this most obvious cause. Observations in the family case report are in accordance to international accepted consensus 1.) that Asthma is clearly associated with mold and dampness, 2.) that for other illnesses there is sufficient evidence for an association, and 3.) that the mechanisms causing dampness-related illness are still un-known (2)
