11 July 2004. In an analysis of its first 25 grants in operation for one year, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has found that these grants have reached an average of 80% of their targets.. This is the conclusion of A Force for Change: The Global Fund at 30 Months, a report to assess progress since the Global Funds creation in early 2002, which was launched here today.. We hope this report is an indication that the innovative ways in which the Global Fund works are beginning to make the impact envisioned at its creation 30 months ago, said Richard Feachem, Executive Director of the Global Fund. The systems work and the Global Fund is ready to dramatically expand funding to countries fighting the three pandemics.. The self-analysis finds that the Global Funds strengths include flexibility to correct mistakes, adapt to local conditions and that its performance-based funding system works well. It points to the need to improve the functioning of Country Coordination ...

Yokohama, Japan, 25th August 2019] The Global Fund Advocates Network Asia-Pacific (GFAN AP) commends the European Union (EU) for their increased pledge of EUR 550 million for the Sixth Replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund). This renewed commitment of the EU represents a 16 percent increase from the Fifth Replenishment and was announced by the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk on 24th August 2019 at the G7 Summit in Biarritz, France.. The EU has pledged EUR 2,097,500,000 and invested in the Global Fund since 2002 and with this increased pledge, would have pledged over EUR 2.6 billion in the fight against the three diseases. The EU is the sixth-largest donor to the Global Fund and nearly half of all pledges to the Global Fund comes from contributions from the EU and its individual Member States.. The EU and its Member States continue to be the worlds leading provider of Official Development Assistance (ODA) and this renewed pledge ...
This Grants Impact Analysis focuses on analyzing and summarizing the spending and outcomes of all grants funded in WMF Fiscal Year 2013-14, for the Project and Event Grants (PEG) and the Individual Engagement Grants (IEG) programs. Given this analysis coincided with a consultation on re-structuring the WMF grants programs, the Analysis of Spending was expanded to encompass across all grants programs except the Annual Plan Grants Program (i.e. PEG, IEG, TPS and Wikimania Scholarships). This report differs from previous Grant Impact Analyses by focusing on all grants funded in Fiscal Year 2013-14, rather than grants for which a report was submitted in that fiscal year. While this does imply an overlap in grants analyzed, this report is not completely duplicative. ...
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was created in 2002 as a partnership between governments, philanthropies and civil society. At the time, these three diseases were completely out of control, killing millions of people each year and with no end in sight.. 17 years later, thanks in large part to the Global Fund, we can imagine the end of AIDS, TB and Malaria. Deaths from these three diseases have declined precipitously. Instances of infection have also declined-though not as sharply as mortality rates.. In all, some $32 million lives have been saved through the Global Fund, which is essentially a pool of money that is strategically disbursed in select countries to reduce instances and deaths from these diseases. The way this money is raised is from contributions from donors, the most significant of which are countries. And in late October in Lyon, France the Global Fund held a pledging conference in which it sought to raise a minimum of $14 billion to cover its operations ...

The need for gender-responsive programming that is designed to manoeuvre and transform the socio-structural dynamics that contribute to unequal access to health resources, has received a lot of academic attention in global health. However, there is comparatively lesser assessments of the scope, scale and ways these activities are implemented, tracked and financed particularly in LMIC settings, and by multilateral or private donor funding.. The objective of this project was to assess the gender responsiveness of UNDPs portfolio of Global Fund grants, and provide recommendations for future grants. Both the UNDP and the Global Fund emphasise the need for a gender-responsive approach in grant-making and health programming. Methodologically, this involved:. desk review and analysis of key documents from 30 grants, based on UNU-IIGHs 4I assessment framework (issues, intervention in included population, investments and implementation), ...

The Global Fund is a 21st-century partnership organization between governments, civil society, the private sector and people affected by the diseases, designed to accelerate the end of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria as epidemics.. The Global Fund is a financing institution, providing support to countries in the response to the three diseases; we do not implement programs on the ground. By challenging barriers and embracing innovative approaches, the Global Fund partnership strives for maximum impact. Working together, we have saved millions of lives and provided prevention, treatment and care services to hundreds of millions of people, helping to revitalize entire communities, strengthen local health systems and improve economies.. ...
On the eve of the Global Fund Replenishment Conference at a White House event celebrating World AIDS Day, President Obama pledged a continuing US leadership role to respond to the AIDS pandemic until all men and women can protect themselves from infection, everyone has access to treatment and no babies are born with HIV. He announced a $5 billion US pledge to the Global Fund over the next three years, encouraging other donors to pledge so we dont leave our money on the table and noted that the PEPFAR program had surpassed the treatment target he announced in 2011 by providing treatment for 6.7 million people.. Notably absent, however, was an announcement of new PEPFAR targets. Instead, the President noted that the White House would soon be announcing a replacement for Dr. Eric Goosby as Office for Global AIDS Coordinator with a first task of working with countries, civil society and the Global Fund to develop service targets for countries where PEPFAR and the Global Fund operate.. Grantsmanship is the art of acquiring peer-reviewed research funding.. The objective of these guidelines is to assist both new and veteran investigators to optimize their chances of successfully competing in a peer-reviewed grant application competition. It is a competition. With success rates falling to 50% or below, the difference between success and failure often results, not just from the quality of the science, but from the quality of the grant application. In all probability, the quality of science of the applications in the 10% below the cut-off for funding by an agency is not significantly different from that in the 10% just above the cut-off. Grantsmanship can make the difference.. The art of grantsmanship will not turn mediocre science into a fundable grant proposal. But poor grantsmanship will, and often does, turn very good science into an unfundable grant proposal. Good writing will not save bad ideas, but bad writing can kill good ones.. Why am I qualified to give advice ? ...
Friday, January 28, 2011. Microcredit lifted 10 million Bangladeshis out of poverty between 1990 and 2008, according to a report.. The work of Grameen Bank and others helped many families to raise their income above $1.25 a day, said the US-based Microcredit Summit Campaign.. The study follows recent criticism of microfinance, which works by providing small loans to people to invest in generating their own incomes.. Some experts argue the report may have missed the bigger picture.. They say the success stories are comparatively few compared to the overall number of borrowers.. Progress. The report drew on a survey of more than 4,000 households by the Economic Research Group in Dhaka.. Alex Counts of Grameen Bank said: This survey reminds us that even in difficult circumstances, major progress can be made.. Floods in 1998 and the food crisis of 2008 caused millions of families to fall below the $1.25 threshold.. However, even with these setbacks, nearly 10 million people rose above the ...

The Global Fund has achieved generally positive results against its key performance indicator (KPI) targets, according to a report on strategic performance prepared for the Board meeting on 15-16 May.. The number of lives saved in 2017 by the Global Fund partnership was 5.1 million, the report said. This puts the Fund on track to meet the target of 29 million lives saved for the six-year duration of the Global Fund Strategy 2017-2022.. The report said that there was strong performance on Strategic Objective 2 (Build Resilient and Sustainable Systems for Health) and Strategic Objective 4 (Mobilize Increased Resources); and that there has been recent progress but also continuing challenges on Strategic Objective 3 (Promote and Protect Human Rights and Gender Equality).. Significant improvement is needed on incidence reduction, the report said. At current funding levels, and in the absence of sufficient progress, there is a risk of not meeting the target: a reduction in new infections/cases of 38% ...

The NHMRC CEO, Professor Anne Kelso, has announced a review of the structure of NHMRCs grant program.. NHMRC awards grants worth around $800 million each year from the Medical Research Endowment Account (MREA). In recent years, rising application numbers to NHMRC schemes and rising costs of research have presented new challenges as we seek to support excellence across all research sectors - from knowledge creation to translation into better healthcare - and provide opportunities for researchers at different stages of their careers.. We have a vibrant, highly productive and internationally competitive research community. However, we are also aware that the increasing number of applications places a heavy burden on applicants and on the many members of the research community who peer-review applications, NHMRC CEO Professor Anne Kelso said. Concerns have also been raised that opportunities for early and mid-career researchers and for exploration of new areas of research are being ...

Yesterday I put together a paragraph-by-paragraph outline for our NIH proposal, using the usual sensible order: One-page Summary, Introduction and Background, Specific Aims, Preliminary Results, Research Methods. Today NIH released the new official Instructions (new because theyre reduced the page limit from 25 to 12, and streamlined the content). Heres the organization they want; Im going to have to do a lot of rethinking to figure out where I should put the information I would normally present, what I should leave out, and what new issues I need to emphasize. Luckily Im not the only person dealing with this change - everyone applying for the usual NIH RO1 grants has to now use this format ...
The poor make complex financial decisions and use the limited range of financial instruments available to them to address their varying needs. The available formal and informal tools, however, are often risky and expensive or lack necessary flexibilities (1). The quest to improve access to appropriate financial services for poor households has traditionally focused on providing credit via formal alternatives to informal moneylenders. The most relevant example is the growth of the Grameen microcredit model developed by Mohammed Yunus.. However, the limited participation and geographic reach of microcredit institutions, especially among the rural poor, have shifted efforts into expanding access to savings. A growing impact literature on microcredit and microsavings shows strong welfare impacts of the latter type of programs, suggesting that they might have more transformative impacts than credit programs as currently typically implemented (2, 3).. In parallel to the development of microcredit and ...

These grants are intended to support relatively inexpensive, well-powered studies that, if successful, will be submitted for publication and for presentation at the SPSP convention. The maximum that may be requested is $1,500, and up to $30,000 in grants will be distributed annually. The goal of the Small Research Grants program is primarily to support research for those post-Ph.D. who otherwise do not have the same amount of institutional resources (e.g., time free from teaching, access to graduate student support, internal funding mechanisms, grant writing resources) to support a sustained record of external funding. The Small Research Grant is especially intended to provide seed funding to help such individuals successfully apply for larger grants.. Awards may be used to compensate participants (on-line or in-person), purchase supplies, travel to research sites, or pay research assistants. Funds may not be used for salary or travel to conferences, and no indirect costs will be granted to the ...

Launch of 2016 replenishment of funds to fight three diseases comes close to goal, exceeds 2013 donations. The $12.9 billion in donations to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria at the launch of its fifth replenishment Saturday puts the international charity effectively within reach of its $13 billion goal and reflects increases in national and private donations, as well as first time donations from some implementing countries. It is nearly a billion dollars over the amount raised in the funds last replenishment cycle, which had fallen $3 billion short of its $15 billion goal.. Following a report at the 2016 International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa that showed the first decline in funding and resources to control the HIV pandemic and ameliorate its impacts since the international response began, the success of the event launching the 5th replenishment Global Fund opens an opportunity to change the narrative of global health financing, Chris Collins, president ...

Downloadable! Microcredit and microfinance emerged in the 1970s in Bangladesh and other developing countries and expanded rapidly worldwide as a business model financially sustainable and able to fight poverty and social exclusion. Empirical evidence confirms microcredit ability to mitigate poverty but its financial sustainability is controversial. Using 2006-2009 Portuguese micro-level data, we estimate the failure rate of Portuguese micro-credit projects as 20,6%/year that, to be financially sustainable, would require a real interest rate by 25%/year. Using a territorial variable on a discrete Cox proportional hazard model with censured data, we estimate that the failure rate of those micro-credit projects located in the worst-case NUTS II Portuguese regions (Alentejo and Centro) and promoted by lower schooling people is significantly higher than best-case.
Despite the initial promise of microcredit, randomized evaluations have found at best modest effects of microloans on poverty. Digitized payments from government cash transfer programs provide a unique opportunity to offer microcredit while addressing some of its shortcomings, potentially reducing interest rates, default risk, and repayment issues. Wednesday, December 12, 2012. The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, on Tuesday expressed delight at the level of care and treatment given to persons infected with HIV and tuberculosis in Nigeria.. Ms Colette Selman, Senior Fund Portfolio Manager, said this during a visit to Global Fund funded sites on HIV and Tuberculosis in Gwagwalada, FCT.. She said that with the level of care achieved at the sites, there had been a remarkable dedication to the fight against HIV and AIDS and Tuberculosis in the country.. Funds disbursed to date amount to 784 million dollars, Nigeria is the second largest country in Africa living with HIV and AIDS, with the burden of 3.1 million population infected with the virus.. Evidence showed that the epidemic is also highly concentrated among high-risk groups, but recently, progress is being made, she said.. ...
Re: Potential to put end to malaria needs big push (Michael Gerson column, 8-14).. A baby dies every 60 seconds from malaria is a startling statement. Thus the possibility of a malaria vaccine is good news indeed.. Gerson writes about the problem of getting the vaccine to the people who need it in the poorer parts of the world. Enter the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. It is the answer to dispensing this and other vaccines and medicines.. The Global Fund calls for and funds grants from local governments and nonprofits on the ground where treatment is needed, with little overhead. The fund follows up to make sure the money produces results or withdraws the grant.. So this fall, when the Global Fund has its three year pledge appeal, America needs to make a pledge that will inspire others. Normally for each dollar America gives, other donors provide two more. The Global Fund could get $30 billion in grants, according to Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, well-known economist and adviser to ...

We have helped the Village recover funds through the FEMA Public Assistance program and managed Phase I of a $40 million Hazard Mitigation Grant Program Village-wide drainage system improvements project, which will ultimately incorporate some of the engineering concepts developed by Walden in the early stages of our relationship with the Village, providing a range of alternatives to reduce flooding in the areas of highest risk to minimize damage and ensure rapid recovery in the wake of future severe weather events.. The following Village projects ...

If you move forward in the interview process, you will often need to perform a chalk talk. For this type of presentation you are asked to give a 1 to 2 hour presentation of your future plans. You should plan to present the rationale and specific aims of your first big grant proposal (e.g. your first R01 in the US), a quick overview of your second big grant proposal, and some ideas for future projects 4-5 years down the road. The objective here is to show that you can generate and develop ideas that are likely to be funded. You want to have a clear hypothesis that emerged from your postdoctoral research and experience and propose mechanistic experiments and specific aims that are going to move the field forward. Do not propose descriptive research and make sure that you have the expertise to perform the experiments that you are proposing. If you are asked to give a chalk talk, find out ahead of time if you are going to be allowed to use slides. If the answer is yes, keep them to a minimum. You ...
In its review of Ugandas TB/HIV funding request, the Technical Review Panel (TRP) praised the country for positioning the request as part of a more sustainable response, including a push to improve coordination with the private sector, and for scaling up interventions for key populations.. The TRP also responded favorably to the proposals alignment with the countrys national strategic plans for both diseases, though the TRP highlighted some concerns, particularly around a lack of clarity within TB programming.. The Global Fund Board approved two grants worth $278.4 million emanating from the funding request. Most of the funding is for HIV programs; fewer than 12% of the funds are dedicated to TB or joint TB/HIV programming. Uganda also requested an additional $263.6 million in its prioritized above-allocation request (PAAR). The TRP deemed all of this amount ...
Since its start in 2002, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has spent $19bn and saved 4.9 million lives. And you have not heard about them. Or at least I had not heard about them. And that was fine. Until now. That is because The Global Fund is in the process of organizing its next commitment round for another estimated $20bn. But what is interesting about this new campaign is that The Global Fund is not asking for your money. Or, at least, it is not asking for your money directly. And that is because, knowingly or unknowingly, you are already a contributor to this campaign, as a taxpayer wherever you live.. In these times of huge government deficits, however, it is important that your voice be heard. That you let your government know that you believe that saving lives around the world, that preventing the spread of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria is a worthwhile use of your tax money, that you are in favor of what The Global Fund is doing.. The Global Fund is starting a ...
